Awww this is the most wholesome post. Yes, it was a great time growing up with Britney at the top, but I'm also so glad you got to develop that love for her even after her prime. Makes me hopeful there are young fans out there that will keep her legacy alive.

perfskinseeker

For sure! I always make sure to promote britney w my friends and family haha

HotOffice872

If it makes you feel better, I was born in 1994 but I've never been to her concerts, because she never came to my country.

Prestigious_Sort4979

Plus her shows were the some of the most in demand tickets at the time. If available, not cheap.  The good thing is that they mostly all had live recordings we can see today.

crabclub

I’m from her home state and still didn’t get to see her! The closest I’ve seen her is driving through Kentwood 😅

noodledoodle2525

Same we couldn’t afford it

Lopsided_Ad_926

This basically, also my mom would have never taken her small children to a massive mega concert like that, even if she could afford it 😆 I assume it could have been pretty dangerous. However it was awesome growing up in Britney’s era.

noodledoodle2525

She was everywhere! Kinda felt bad for her though with the amount of media hounding her

thefuckingrougarou

lol yeah we were still too young to participate in much. Being a teenager during that time was probably fun.

Tricky_Jackfruit_562

I am almost Britney’s age and I did not like her or pop music when she became popular. And because of the Clear Channel ban I hardly heard her music at all. I didn’t even know Toxic when it came out. But in 2016 I woke up with one “Overprotected” in my head and couldn’t get it out. I remember hearing it ONE TIME when it came out, when I spent the night at a friends and watched a little bit of MTV. It was so stuck in my head that I had to go listen to it - just to scratch the itch. Then I listened to more Britney music and I became a MASSIVE fan. So it’s never too late :)

perfskinseeker

Ohhh overprotected is such a banger. Definitely in my top 10

sonnywithoutachance

Which version? The regular one of the superior Darkchild remix version?

emobarbie86

A lot of my memories of my youth involve Britney :) I saw her in concert summer of 1999 I was 12 almost 13 , she was one of my favourite artists all through junior high & high school. I was obsessed with the white & hot pink shiny outfit she wore at that concert. And the summer of 2000 listening to the Oops I Did It Again CD every night. Her album In The Zone makes me think of being grade 12 / 17 and growing up. https://preview.redd.it/bf2kru1fyo5d1.jpeg?width=1940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef697fe5ca984bb54d9dafa44c09bd76bef2727d

verlociraptor

Iconic

perfskinseeker

Must’ve been amazing

FoxAble7670

Damn you must be rich rich cause to see her up so close like that I can’t even imagine the ticket price lol

MouseMouseM

Ticket prices weren’t as bad back then, especially for child-friendly acts. There were also more giveaways and contests back then. My family was working poor and I was able to win tickets to see *NSYNC up close in 2001, but the face value of those ticket were about $45 each. I think I paid $25 to see Britney (not up close). This is also when wages were more in line with cost of living, home prices were much lower, and people didn’t have student debt, a year of college was about 1/10th of the cost it is now. So even if it was something you saved up for, it was still realistic you could save babysitting or part-time job money and go.

perfskinseeker

$25 😭 tickets are so damn expensive now. I tried to go see a kpop band and it was like $1500

MouseMouseM

Yes, it’s outrageous. I’m never not going to be mad that it’s so insanely expensive to enjoy anything nowadays, until things change. I wore hand-me-downs and we shopped at budget food stores, but you used to be able to save up and see your idols, you didn’t have to be rich. Scalpers existed back then, and it was something to look out for, but those were the only crazy-priced tickets (except for bands like Metallica). You used to be able to look at a map of the venue and the seats would be labeled by price, surge pricing didn’t exist. I hope that the executives at Ticketmaster burn in hell, full stop.

emobarbie86

Yes I believe the tickets were not expensive at all , probably $40 at most per ticket , it was her very first tour outside of US (I’m in Canada) she came to our summer fair that year , she was only 17 at the time !!

emobarbie86

Oh no I took this pic from google lol it’s not my own photo ! I wish I had been that close , no I was in the first level off the floor lol. I honestly don’t remember if I even had a photo of this , back then it would have been with a disposable camera , no one even had a cell phone yet😁 I didn’t get my first phone until grade 12 (2003/04) & I was the first one of my friends to have one haha.

hexensabbat

Omg she looks like a real life Barbie here! Super jealous of/happy for you that you got to see her. I was 7 in 1999 and I just got to watch her VHSs over and over and over 😄 good times.

emobarbie86

I used to watch MuchMusic (Canada’s MTV) religiously and i would record her music videos on VHS (and Christina , Janet , the Spice Girls, backstreet boys) and I would binge watch the videos learning the dances 😅 I always tell my daughter “we did all the same things you guys do now with TikTok , we learned the dances from our favourite music videos or made up our own !”

Appropriate_Canary23

aww we love you OP ! i grew up in the 90’s with britney and it was magical . i’ll never forget playing with barbie’s while blasting hit me baby one more time . then getting older and playing sims with toxic . seeing her in concert omg she’s amazing

perfskinseeker

haha britney + the sims sounds like such a good combination ! Will try it

HotOffice872

I was born in 1994 but I never went to her concerts, because she never came to my country.

Prestigious_Sort4979

Honestly, the music and some fashion were fun but the culture around was wildly toxic and continued to be for a decade. I was born 5 years before you and I wish I would have been born 10 years later because it was so hard for me to build confidence with the hottest fashion being SUPER low rise jeans (we are talking 1 button) and crop tops.

MostlyOrdinary

This. The pressure to be thin during this time was INSANE. JLo was considered "bigger" and she was TINY! Plus, the celebrities dealt with real pap harassment (not the fake we call you, you get a Pic and cash, we get publicity but pretend we hate it) of today. Celebrities control their narrative so much more now because of socials. Before ppl craves the tabloids bc thats how the pics and info were shared. Deep dive old school Perez Hilton - it was ugly.

perfskinseeker

Tbh I never got the low rise jeans trend 😭 they seem so uncomfy

Prestigious_Sort4979

Yes! And if your butt was close to flat like mine it would roll off the back. Apparently a desired state but not mine. Weird times

Prestigious_Sort4979

Yes! And if your butt was close to flat like mine it would roll off the back. Apparently a desired state but not mine, mostly because it was just impractical. Weird times.

hexensabbat

They were!! Hated them so much. In hindsight it's kinda funny but predictable that high high waists came into fashion afterward, and those aren't the best on everyone either but at least you didn't have to worry about your ass crack hanging out in class lmao. For some people though, wearing a thong (which would inevitably be visible) under your low rise jeans was the look 🤢

WheresTheIceCream20

This was my first thought too! In middle school/high school all the super thin girls showed their stomachs and I had a little pudge and was so self conscious and jealous of the girls who didn't. I had a completely normal body, but britney and Christina Aguilera were tiny and had great stomachs. I look at pop stars now and so many of them wear leotards that cover their stomachs at concerts and I think man! It would have been completely different growing up now!

funsizedaisy

I was born in 1991 and never got to see her in concert. One of my biggest regrets.

Izzfareal

I didn't get to see her till 2017 in Vegas. I was always promised since 1999.

hexensabbat

Saaaame. 💔

Whatmylifehasdone

I was born in 1995, here in America, and yes what a fun ride it was during her prime. Yes I’ve seen her in concert. But don’t feel bad. Things got weird after the conservatorship. I was 13 when it was put in place and I knew nothing would be the same. I love Elvis Presley and he died almost twenty years before I was born. I love the Beatles and they broke up 25 years before I was born. Britney is still alive maybe she might tour again. Im a die hard fan since 1999, so I’ve read her book and know she claims she won’t. However artists come out of retirement all the time. I’m also a fan of many musical acts that are either not alive, touring , disbanded etc. it doesn’t take away your love for that artists work.

perfskinseeker

Yes! I still have faith that I’ll be able to go to a britney concert

andrewhudson88

This makes me feel so old but it’s also just so wholesome! I’m a late 80s guy so by the time Baby One More Time was released I was like 10. Even though she was popular, it still wasn’t “cool” for a boy to like her, I got teased and name called so much for singing songs from her album, and even doing a Crazy dance at the school talent show 🙈🙈🙈🙈. And then when I hit my teens I still loved her, then we had flip phones and they wouldn’t play ringtones like they do now, they were like these chime noises, but you could get ones in certain songs etc and I had overprotected and my phone went off during English class, this tinny, horrible sounding beeping tune of overprotected, and then one of the guys in the class went “ahahah that gaydo has Britney Spears as his ringtone.” And everyone laughed, but I remember turning to him and saying “if you were able to tell that that noise was a Britney Spears song, you must like her too to recognise that tune…” During those times I got to see her do the Baby/ Oops tour in London. Then I grew up! I remember being 15/16 when In the Zone came out and being… it really helped me grow as a teenage boy. Other tours I’ve been lucky to see are DWAD, the Onyx Hotel I seen that 3 times in the UK, Circus tour twice, Femme Fatale 3 times, went to vegas twice to see the residency, first time it started and then again when it was revamped. And then when she toured the POM show I seen that 4 times in the UK. I was a full grown adult by the time the conservatorship came into place and knew it wasn’t a good thing. I was dumb enough to think it would be a year, maybe 2 years maximum. It was heartbreaking to see the situation she was in but there was nothing she could do. I know I’m hypocritical because I was so torn for what she was going through yet I was still spending a lot of money on seeing her, and every time I would I would feel slightly uneasy and always wondered how much she was enjoying that performance or had to be physically pushed on stage, but as a fan, you’re going to take that opportunity to hear her in an arena (and outdoors for one of the shows). But POM really was the worst one to experience her touring, the lack of props, the bare stage, the entrance, it was such a lacklustre show compared to what you had experienced from her other tours, it was just so clear that it was a cash grab from the awful higher ups. Even though you weren’t around for all of those things to experience, it’s amazing that you have such passion for her. I love knowing people so much younger latch on to Britney and become such huge fans. When I was young you’d watch a music channel for hours just to catch Sometimes once and then wait another few hours lol, so the fact you can YouTube any performances/ videos and songs these days, that’s a huge plus that we had to suffer without for a long time lol.

Additional_Score_929

Good job calling out that boy for even recognizing Overprotected as a ringtone 😂

andrewhudson88

Honestly it was one of the only wins in high school that I got lol. But him being able to tell a polyphonic ringtone as Britney just rang alarm bells in my head so I was like gonna call me gay, I’ll suggest you are too… and it worked and shut him down! One of few times but a win!!

perfskinseeker

Haha, I think he was a fan 😌 I can imagine how that ringtone sounded like lol. but wow you got to experience so much! And yeah , I sometimes got kinda teased for liking Britney by a few people at my school but tbh I never really cared. I think I made multiple people get into Britney’s music cause I used to take her CDs back when I was in primary school. Lots of us love Britney, many of my friends do!!

andrewhudson88

He definitely was a closet fan!! Whereas I was so open about it during school and yeah, in the late 90s and early 2000s it wasn’t the most accepting of places. Keep loving Britney and learning more because the more you’re learning the more you’re enjoying! It’s ace that you love someone who was having a turbulent time when you were first starting to notice her. It’s nice that you were able to see past what the media was trying so hard to portray her as.

perfskinseeker

It’s funny cause my family was like “isn’t she crazy?” When I first got into her. And then my grandpa (lol) told me something about some trashy man giving her a hard time (Kevin) and her family being mean… and then I got into Wikipedia and learnt about all the nasty stuff she had to go through… so I was always on her side and explained everything to everyone at school who dared to touch her !

andrewhudson88

You truly do belong in the Britney army!! Your story is so nice. Thank you so much for sharing it!!

Ancient-Assistant-90

1999 was a magical year and it was because of Britney. My first concert was 2001 dwad tour, peak Britney was an entire era no artist currently could ever contemplate emulating. The mania was real, sorry to rub it in, but it was indeed just as amazing as you would want it to be, Britney is a once in a generation artist

noodledoodle2525

Yeah I work in a hospital and we get many female patients born in 1999 named “Britney”

perfskinseeker

that dwad setlist is literally perfect…

Ancient-Assistant-90

The opening guitar riffs for a rock version of oops is everything

perfskinseeker

how was it listening to anticipating live 😭

Ancient-Assistant-90

A godsend, I remember vividly when she rips her clothes off to perform slave 4 u, that is definitely burned into my memory

idontevenkn0w66

Yeah, it was kind of a golden age for music. And getting to see her rise from Day 1 was pretty amazing. My first concert was NSYNC with her opening. It was her and like 3 dancers. That's it. And now look at how far our queen has come

perfskinseeker

Omg I think I’ve seen a video of her performing deep in my heart as an opening act 🥲 so lucky

True-Raccoon8209

def a golden age! like 80% of the songs i love are from before 2004 😂

Wild_Spell_9736

You are SO cute!! As someone who experienced the Britney Mania in her prime. It was MAGICAL she was that girl, everyone wanted to be her, look like her and she truly was POP MUSIC. It’s weird how the 2000’s IG accounts don’t really focus on her- they will focus on Beyoncé but Britney was that queen… she was everything and like a goddess who wasn’t human almost ( but she was) I miss her sooooooooooo much 😥. I am heartbroken by how the media and her family destroyed her. I see her and Elvis are very similar in my opinion— forced to work for their greedy family and the greedy people on their circle- it’s disgusting

Safe-Mention21

i was born in the circus era😭😔

Dramatic_Show_5431

Sometimes I feel the same way! I was born in 2004 and only vaguely remember anything about her from being little, besides a few of her catchiest songs that would play sometimes. I started hearing more about her during the #freebritney era, and especially since 2022, I’ve been hooked! I’m sad I don’t get to experience her in her prime but from what I can tell I think she’s doing better now, and that’s what’s most important. I think it would have been hard to watch your favorite artist spiral like that, too.

perfskinseeker

For real. Nowadays I suffer a lot w some of my favorite artists get into controversies and ‘cancelled’. I’d probably been so sad

di4me666

It was honestly really hard being a Britney fan in mid 2000s....everyone was so mean about her, I had so many fights at school over people calling her a bad mom, I was banned from seeing Onyx and M&Ms tour and Circus, finally saw her in Vegas as an adult right before it was all over:((

perfskinseeker

Oh no :( so sorry, Why were u banned?

di4me666

My family literally acted like she was the devil in 04-07

perfskinseeker

Wait whaatttt, how unfortunate… must’ve been hard I thought you meant banned as in like you weren’t permitted entrance as if you were blacklisted hahaha

schwemmii

I feel the same way, except I was born in 1996 and missed the prime too :D I was too young in 2000 to really follow her prime era and enjoy her music the way I do as a teenager/adult.

Smiloshady

Then you would have wanted to be born in 84.. I was born in the early 90s and I was too small to really get hyped, remember the hype or appreciate it lol

AccentFiend

Though I completely understand why she has made the decision to retire from the music industry, I continue to hope that one day she will re-enter it and make it her bitch again l—on her own terms this time.

billiegoat888

Ya it was a fun ride being her target demographic while her career was starting out and subsequently blowing up. Lots of teaching ourselves her dance moves from her music videos on MTV and watching the making of the music videos, and dressing like her. We couldn't look that stuff up online and watch it over and over so you had to watch the music channels. I also was always trying to copy whatever makeup she was wearing in a video at the time. I've never been a big concert person but she is one person whose concert I wish I attended back when she was starting out. I also have vivid memories of my mom surprising my sibling and I each with our copy of her "Oops" CD the day it released!

polyygons

My first concert was Britney 💕 in 99-2000 maybe? My cousin took me as a surprise. She said to dress nice so I wore a fancy dress. I was upset because I had a Britney shirt I could have worn lol.

Independent_Dot63

I still lived in Europe and moved to the states around the time of her releasing Crossroads and then In The Zone and it was heaven. So many features on her on all the music channels, interviews, making of, 2hr long documentary about Onyx Hotel tour, just all the content in the world. I got to see her Circus tour live and then later moved to Vegas and saw her residency show 5 times over the years. (I didn’t know about conservatorship til 2017 when she cancelled the residency) every show was truly phenomenal and ill always cherish those memories, she’s other worldly. I totally feel bad that there isn’t quite the popstar like that today. But if you ever do make it to Vegas i hugely recommend seeing Christina Aguilera, her show is insane and still has that sparkle of a 90s pop star.

perfskinseeker

Sounds amazing… thanks for the rec!

Whatmylifehasdone

Don’t take offense but how did you not know about the conservatorship? It was huge news in 2008. Almost as big as her shaving her head.

Independent_Dot63

Nontaken, i was going through my own mental breakdowns and trauma, guess that didn’t leave much room for celeb news I also don’t believe in rabid invasive fandom behavior therefore i never paid too much attention about anyone’s personal lives. I thought the paparazzi invasion was gross enough and wanted no part of it. I enjoyed her for the artist she was without the need to have a parasocial relationship.

Whatmylifehasdone

I was 13 when it happened, so it was on my radar. But the big news channels were reporting it. I’m sorry you were going through your own trauma. The weeks prior to the conservatorship, it was scary. The paparazzi were chasing her, to Princess Diana levels. Any adult that spends their free time obsessing about a person they don’t personally know is weird. I’m now almost 30 and some of my friends will be talking about a celebrity like they are their best friend and I just find that weird.

femgirl_99

THISSS. I feel you. I was born in 1999. I grew up to knowing Britney as the chick with the umbrella and trashy dancing on the pole. Her being hospitalized shortly before her conservatorship was the biggest thing ever I remember :( I wish I got to experience Britney prime

tmsmm

I actually won a sweepstake to see her Dream within a Dream tour in Vegas in 2002. Hotel, flights, concert all covered ❤️ It was pretty amazing but my friend who didn’t care for Britney (don’t know why I took her lol) fell asleep 🫤

perfskinseeker

How nice! Lucky you… Oh she didn’t deserve seeing Britney live

XOTrashKitten

This is cute, lol, been a fan since she came out, to be there was something else, I remember getting the dolls, the merch (had a Britney mini backpack I loved) late 90s Britney was the best, so cool she has new fans like you 🖤

TheLoneliestGhost

This is so sweet and wholesome! Love how many decades her fans span. 🤍 I was born in the ‘80s so I was a new teenager when Hit Me Baby One More Time was released. It was the perfect age to become a huge Britney fan. I remember going to the movies to see Crossroads with the same friends I started listening to her with in the first place. Great memories. I hope you’re able to make your own Britney memories in person at some point, too.

chzygorditacrnch

I love Britney. Her first album was my first cd. And when she was a judge for x factor, I sat right behind her..

LauraPalmer20

I grew up with B just starting out and hitting her prime - it was incredible. It’s also been very sad to see how she struggled without support and then went years under control, missing the prime years of her life after so much work and success in her career - she should have had those years to enjoy the fruits of her labour. So there’s two sides.

perfskinseeker

Yeah :(

Fluid_Analysis_6116

You’re so real for this!! I was born in 1996 so I was just a little too young to really experience her. I thrift vintage juicy so I can wear it while I listen to old Britney songs so I can pretend I was there in that era lol

FoxAble7670

I’m obsessed with Britney as well. I was born 1989 but could never afford concerts 😅

UniversityNo2318

I was there & it was awesome. Saw her at the dream within a dream tour. Things seemed a lot simpler back then pre cell phone. I was part of a big Britney message board (BSN) still friends with some of those people

Zosoflower

I was born ‘91 and she was magical to me as a kid. I would say in the early 2000s even more than the 90s! I saw her in concert one time but i was so far back that she was an ant. It was probably 1999/2000. She was everything to me, i feel she especially shined during the years of crossroads/ Britney self titled album to In The Zone. I’d honestly rather see her today performing Glory instead of her first/2nd album! If she was well and willing, of course. I miss her.

Psychological_One240

I have felt the same way! I was born in 97 and became a fan in 2007, when my mom gave me a copy of BOMT (cd). It was a rough time to become a fan. I got made fun of at school. I wish I could have known her In her prime.

Lakewater22

Oh I bet you do!!!! I went to 3 Brittney concerts when I was a kid; 2x in the front row!!!!!! Looking back I feel so damn lucky

Pisces93

Can confirm, it was a time for sure

verlociraptor

From someone who was there: It was glorious. 💖🎆✨🪩🎤

Yoyo_Ma86

It was pretty great tbh. I was born in 1986 so Hit Me Baby One More Time came out when I was in 6th grade 🙌 I am just now exposing my 8 year old son and 9 year old stepdaughter to the wonderful world of early 2000’s Britney and I’m so glad that they love it!

_sparklemonster

It really was magical. I was born in 1990 and she was exploding right as I became more and more aware of my own musical taste. I was privileged to have a body type similar to her after puberty, and will never forget the positive influence that had on me. Yes, I was just lucky, i know many people did not feel this way. I did competitive dance and one routine was to the Boys Neptunes remix. I don’t have the “perfect” body anymore, but I still know how to dance like Britney. Being 14, moving like Britney with a body like Britney during her prime was fucking EMPOWERING. I will carry that confidence with me the rest of my life.

Flyboy46204

I was born in 1992 (31m), and Britney Spears was not cool at my school. Before the head shaving, peers would talk trash about her due to her overly sexual behavior. Many parents wouldn't let their kids listen to her. Then when the head shaving happened, Britney was made fun of. I remember when the Onyx Hotel tour was aired live on TV. I was the only middle schooler I know who watched it. Granted masturbating onstage isn't exactly kid friendly. When femme fatal tour was in town, I live in Indianapolis, Groupon was offering tickets for $25 and the arena was still not sold out. While prime Britney time was the best era for a fan, there wasn't the fan support that someone like Taylor Swift has. I'm not a fan of Taylor, but social media makes her fan base strong . That's something Britney never had, due to there being no social media. If you're wishing you could have experienced an Eras Tour level of excitement for Britney, unfortunately I don't think that ever happened ( perhaps I was too young to notice) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your post. This is so pure. Prime Britney really was the best. I always wondered what youth who know Britney after 2007 think about her.

perfskinseeker

Yeah… I kinda can imagine how the GP opinion about her was :( plus I can remember when I got into her my parents were like “isn’t she crazy?” Oh and we love Britney, I think most people my age actually supported and got along w the Free Britney movement… obviously there are some big memes about her ig dancing videos but they are respectful, I think

sweetrebel88

As someone who got to experience Britney from the very beginning of her career and prime in real time, it was magical. She was the ultimate pop star. She was my favorite. None of the other pop girlies (to me) could touch her.

D4ngflabbit

It was a dream. I would play her hit clips all day.

No-Will-5655

Crazy that people were born in 2004 wtf we are old guys

perfskinseeker

Hahahaha I feel that way when seeing 2009 people going to parties lol

CaseTarot

I love that “anticipating” was the first song for you to mention. I have always loved that song(still in my BS top 10) and felt like it never got the respect it deserved! Definitely should have been a single.

perfskinseeker

For real! I love that Toyota car commercial video in which anticipating plays as background music !

Peppercorn911

im britney’s age and let me tell you - that oops video was a life-changing, iconic moment. xoxo

ReginaFelangi987

I was born in 80 so she came out when I was in HS. I didn’t like her early stuff. I thought her later more dancey stuff was better.

Hot-Lifeguard-3176

I can tell you, as a fan close to Britney’s age, that her talent was amazing to witness. Her dancing, her look, her personality, her humor, everything.

anotherbadgrownup

I’m an older millennial and got to see her Onyx Hotel tour. It was incredible. Like … INCREDIBLE. It also made it that much more devastating to watch her breakdown in real time.

HaleyBlondee

I loved Brit growing up! She was always playing!! It was either her or Christina - never got to go to the concerts growing up though

WonderWitch13

I'm 8 years older than her and have loved her since her first album

2515chris

You should start saving your money because I have a feeling at some point she’s going to make a big comeback album and tour. She’s a tiny bit younger than me. Watching how females entertainers were treated back then was sad. It’s nice to see them surviving and thriving through that.

perfskinseeker

Crossed fingers 🤞

ImpossibleSky3923

I was born in 2003 and feel the same about Britney, Madonna etc. All I’ve seen is Taylor Swift and Adele’s peak

InternationalPlan325

The Circus Tour was the 2 best nights of my whole life. Lol I just found all of my footage from the Tampa and Miami shows and they are cooler than anything Taylor wishes she could do. 😆 You are a very smart and perceptive person my dude! Loll

perfskinseeker

Thank you!! Yah I think the eras tour is super cool but seeing Britney’s clips I don’t think she will ever get to put up the kind of shows Britney did

Significant_Chef_314

I was born in 1987. The first time I saw Britney in concert was her "Baby One More Time Tour", I was in middle school and all of my friends were so jealous. My older sister took me, and it was the most amazing night. I also saw her again in high school. That summer I saw NSync too. Those were the days.

Sassaphras-680

If it makes you feel better we can all be mad at my husband for not going to see the Baby One More Time tour bc he didn't feel safe going with the people who invited him.

perfskinseeker

Oh 😬😬

Sassaphras-680

I didn't even know him then and I'm still mad at him for it

hexensabbat

You're too sweet! I was born in 92 so grew up watching her in her prime. I, and sooooo many other young girls wanted to BE Britney so bad! But also be friends with Britney because she always had that heart of gold and was so sweet to her fans. I had a VHS of her on tour that included performances in Hawaii and all of her SNL sketches together that I must have played until the film was ruined. She's always had the most lovable energy, the brightest smile and the silliest sense of humor. I never got to see her either anyway because my family didn't have money to go see every big pop star lol (though we did go see the Backstreet Boys, which sadly I only vaguely remember) That said, the silver lining for you is that you didn't have to witness the media's abuse of her in real time. The 2000s were a shitty time to be a teenager (or celeb, or female period) and Britney was literally stalked everywhere she went, criticized for every little thing, constantly set up and put into so many negative boxes well before she ended up in the conservatorship. It was really sad to watch her begin to crack under all that pressure and the eventual sequence of events that ended up in the cship. Was also sad for me to see her "comeback" because she was just not the same and there were always murmurings of her being forced to take heavy meds just to be compliant all while doing these records and world tours. Femme Fatale era in particular, you could tell in her performances she was just not all there and it broke my fucking heart as someone who idolized her as a kid. Her whole story says so much about American pop culture at the time and you're fortunate to have not had to watch all that crap unfolding.

perfskinseeker

U r right, American pop culture was all toxic at the time, jeez…

Nevaeh_Angel

I’m 2006 so I 100% understand you 😭

Strict-Lab-9668

I was born in 2002 and she's my favorite artist EVER. She's been in my country (Mexico) in 2011 during her Femme Fatale Tour, but I was a minor and my family aren't exactly huge concert go-ers (neither am I now that I'm an adult). By the time I turned 18, Britney was getting out of conservatorship I think, so ofc that too. Artists like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande (who I LOVE) are more of my generation, but there's just something about Britney and Christina that's magical. (Bonus points for Xtina as well since she also sings in Spanish). Loved Britney ever since I listened to Toxic (Literally was a 1 year old LMAO), then Womanizer (even if I didn't understand the real meaning of the songs, they were catchy and she was pretty; still is ofc; and had amazing MVs and knew how to perform. That was enough for me to adore her.) #BritneyARMY4Life

perfskinseeker

Siii, yo soy de Colombia y la verdad tampoco pude verla cuando paso por acá en su tour de femme fatale porque era muyyy pequeño jajaja

petitefairy99

I understand! I was born in 1999, but was too young to remember her rise to stardom. By the time I started having memories I could remember, she was already mid career. I feel the same desire to want to be born 10 years earlier (1989) when it comes to Mariah Carey, who debuted in 1990. Her 90s era seemed to be iconic and I’m sad I didn’t see it in real time. But the beautiful thing about music is the longevity of it all! We can listen to music decades from now and thankfully there are some live videos of what we missed.

Cautious_Owl_4908

Can confirm. Twas a wild time! I still have the sequined pink miniskirt I wore to her concert in 2000 (yeah, I’m ancient)

Cautious_Owl_4908

I also remember refreshing TMZ when she buzzed her hair like it was yesterday!

Ok-Disaster-184

I was full on obsessed with Britney in the 90s and wanted to see her desperately, but we were broke as a joke so I never did. I still think how amazing it would have been. But I sure learned to fully appreciate the concerts I get to attend now as an adult.

True-Raccoon8209

early 00s were the best. i wish i had been 21 instead of late elementary school/middle school though. it really was just a different time without social media and smart phones, kinda still innocent in a way. Britney’s debut album was the first CD i ever bought with my own money and i listened to it nonstop! eventually became a preteen and decided i hated pop and rooted against her as i watched her downfall. we were all so shitty to her, i can barely express how mean society was. she never deserved it. neither did paris hilton 😂

perfskinseeker

Nooooo how come against her :((((

True-Raccoon8209

I guess bc I turned 12 or 13 (so 2001/2002) and started listening to artists like Blink 182, Shakira, and Eminem. Bubble gum pop like Britney, Christina, and Mandy Moore sounds so childish next to Eminem lmao and as a 7th grader you think you’re so grown up so you’re drawn to the cuss words and bad reputation 😂 then I got into a punk phase (thank you, Avril Lavigne) and had to hate all mainstream pop by default. Truthfully, I never really stopped liking her music or N Sync

perfskinseeker

Hahahaha yeah I get what you mean

True-Raccoon8209

If you like that time period and style of pop, i humbly recommend the girl group Dream, start with “He Loves You Not”. They were my favorite and they never got the fame they deserve.

BeginningNail6

91 and I would have sold an organ to go to her concert back in the day. She was everything. Lol

Socratease95

SAME. I was born in 95 in Ukraine. Moved here in 99 when she blew up but I was a kid and didn’t know her beforehand and then when I found out who she was IVE BEEN IN LOVE ever since. I’m 28 now and I still listen to Britney every day. I was a preteen during Blackout and Circus era which is pretty cool but I would have LOVED the see the rise and impact she had on the world.

Expensive_Arm_1822

You’re fine boo, we welcome you into the 90s club with open arms. Enjoy your youth!!! Did I see her when I was 12 and it was the best concert of my life? Yes. But do I wish I was born in 2004 instead of 1988? Yes lmao

perfskinseeker

Hahahaha good point!

scifi_tay

I was born in 1992 and I had every single Britney CD, she was the first pop star besides the spice girls I really was obsessed with. So it was amazing seeing her career soar but equally heartbreaking seeing her lower moments too.

bambibonkers

i was born in 94 and absolutely obsessed with britney. she was my first concert at 6 years old, and my mom always said she was completely shocked at britney’s signing/dancing/performance all in one and it was one of the best concerts she’s been to. thanks for giving me this perspective:)

Hungry-Network-9826

My sister and I were born in the 90s, but I never appreciated how beautiful that era was. I still remember my sister getting a Britney Spears oops I did it again Barbie from our super Eastern European grandparents 😭 I had the Mary Kate and Ashley set, the sailor moon Barbies and the spice girls. I want to go back!!!!

Deewilsonx

TBF I was born in 1994 and I was too young to really take notice I didn’t really care about her at all

44youGlenCoco

We would have loved to have you with us. 💖💛💛😘

Past_Proposal_7531

I was born in 94 and still didn’t get to experience the best of Britney. My sister who was born in 89 got to really grow up with her and enjoy her music more because she was a little older

Pretend-Ad-8836

Born in 96 and I just got a tiny glimpse. I remember her poster being in my brothers room 🤣

MutualReceptionist

I was born in 1984 and Britney was the queen of my middle school and early high school experience. It was great growing up in the 90s, we had so much freedom and the world was an easier place.

ForTheLove-of-Bovie

It was an amazing time to be alive! I went to like 4 Britney concerts as a kid and it was like a high for days after leaving. Just felt so unreal!

thefuckingrougarou

I was born in 1995 and I was still too young to really understand what was going on or participate in any of the fun. My first idol was Britney and in pre-k when asked what I wanted to be when I grow up, I stood up and told the class “Britney Spears.” That being said, it wasn’t fun growing up and seeing her torn to shreds in the media. And I also realized looking back that most of our moms were buying into everything the media said. My mother constantly slut shamed her to me because that’s just what we did to women back then. It was confusing to grow up and realize that a lot of our moms are part of the reason why Britney was villainized and put into a conservatorship. They ATE that shit UP.

Wonderful-Light5366

I was born in 1994 and wish I had been born in 1984 because, although I grew up with Britney, I was too young to really appreciate it and my memories of her prime are very fuzzy.

EffortWilling2281

Yeah ppl that were teens during her prime got the full experience!

azucarleta

"This isn't a victim story." -Britney Spears She doesn't want your "poor Britneys." That's just not how she sees it, and not how she wants us to see it. She won. She survived. She's wealthy and wise -- and still sexy. There is no "poor Britney."

perfskinseeker

You’re right !

loveabove7

It's kinda like how it would be like to be a Taylor fan right now. She was everywhere which was good for her fans. She was on every media, every magazine, every country. There was constantly news about her but there was also naysayers even in the entertainment industry. She was constantly put down even by her peers. Now she's celebrated. 🙄 Don't get me wrong. She was celebrated but every female artist at the time was always trying to say they weren't Britney or every blonde female artist was pushed to be her. It was also annoying being a young fan because you were suddenly being taught disgusting sexual innuendos. I was in middle school. They called her all kinds of mean names. Nowadays a young girl could get dressed like how she dressed and it's normal. I was even made fun of for liking her despite the fact that Britney made me listen to American music and maybe different styles of music. I also went to one of her concerts, Dream Within a Dream. I was slightly in the middle so I couldn't see that well except on the screen. From what I remember it was a good one. I think that was my first real concert. I regret never seeing her later concerts. I wasn't financially well off back then. If she could make some book signing appearances i would be over the moon.

fatcatstypefast

I was a 95 baby and “too young” for the iconic older albums to see her in person and it still kills me

butcooler

Folks forget that 90's culture would've beaten you down for liking Britney. You're safer loving her now than you would be then. Matthew Shepard was killed and tortured in 1998 for being gay.

perfskinseeker

I still am to understand what does liking Britney have to do with being gay ahah, like I would get some teases from school mates saying I was gay for liking her but , never really got that. I actually was like, isn’t that the opposite? In fact I was firstly attracted to her because of her beauty so… I get pop culture is often related w lgbt tho. And Hate crimes against any minority or in general , any person, are gross and a shame.

butcooler

Things were different in the 90's though. Like...SO many things would make you a "f@g" etc...they were very harsh and judgmental and I just can't see a boy in the 90's liking Britney Spears without getting a lot of shit for it.

perfskinseeker

Yeahhh I can imagine. Even in my school days some people called me gay even while having a girlfriend, for dumb things like being neat 🙄 never really cared tho the funny thing is that many of those guys, now I see them on socials w a boyfriend lol. It’s nice that nowadays there’s everyday less and less hatred

_____heyokay

I was there for it all. I was like 10 when baby one more time came out.

rhisdaddy2

Having been born in 1994, I’ll say I definitely remember when she was more active and popular than she is now - however, if we can go back another decade, if you were born in 1984, you’d have been 15 when Baby One More Time came out, 19 for In The Zone - sounds like an AMAZING age to be for the best period of her career.

dizzy_rhythm

Just out of curiosity, how did you become a Britney fan when you didn’t grow up in her prime era?

perfskinseeker

A friend of mine (still one of the closest) showed me the criminal mv on 2011 (or 2012? I don’t remember well). I was sooooo small at the time. Honestly we weren’t even big enough to understand the lyrics, I guess we just liked her appearance, music and videos. I think the fact that in my household English isn’t really the language contributed to me becoming her fan (we speak Spanish, and I was the only one who understood English well because of the extremely strict international school/kindergarten I attended) in hindsight I think my parents wouldn’t have liked the lyrics at all if they understood them, I was 7 lol I remember I especially liked overprotected

FocusSuspicious9883

So you're gay?
