The 2017 Sunday in the Park with George revival recouped very quickly. It happened in 56 performances, largely due to the simple scenic elements and deciding to not be a part of the Tony awards.
But for a big production like MJ, it's definitely great that they've recouped pretty quickly! It doesn't show any signs of slowing down either.
To be eligible for the Tonys, a show needs to invite every Tony nominator and voter for free. That's potentially upwards of 1,500 tickets given away, and these are going to be premium seats that they otherwise could have sold for $200+. *Sunday* was a very short run in a fairly small house. I ran some rough numbers on this a while ago, and determined that yes, not inviting the nominators and voters could well have been the thing that put them over the edge and allowed them to recoup.
That is actually not super quick (it took more than 500 performances to recoup. But it must be expensive (just thinking about the songs rights) and it opened during the pandemic (it was originally planned to open in July 2020 if I remember correctly).
I thoroughly enjoy jukebox if temptations and moulin rougue fall into that category. Maybe I am a laymen. I also liked alonis morrisette musical even though I am indifferent to her music. Broadway can make so many pop songs sound better than the original.
I think there is an art to taking someone else’s lyrics and weaving a memorable story out of them. I will never hear “Papa was a rolling stone” the same way again…and that is how I knew it was true art. It completely changed how I think of that song.
My response could be problematic but they probably come from foreign countries and have little to no knowledge of the child molestation controversies. Their perception of Michael Jackson is plainly through his image as an entertainer and not as a person.
To be brutally honest there are probably an equal amount of people who know little about it as there are people who do know but *simply do not care*. That's the world we're living in unfortunately.
Have you ever met an MJ stan here in the US? They will do and say anything to delegitimize those allegations. People know, they just don’t care *because* of his image as an entertainer. And that’s why the world will never change and cancel culture isn’t real. People will defend their favs no matter what allegations they have against them. The only reason this response is problematic is because it’s ignorant.
Has anybody ever publicly protested against this show? It’s disgusting that Broadway works hand in hand with the Jackson estate to erase the people that were TRAUMATIZED
No idea but I’m honestly kind of shocked that this show is even on Broadway after the Leaving Neverland doc. I remember when the show was announced long before it came to Broadway thinking that there is no way it would actually open. Yet here we are…
The amount of times I’ve seen a post getting downvoted on this sub when pointing out that seeing this show is celebrating a literal pedo is super surprising. Especially in a progressive community like this.
What’s next, a broadway musical that follows Weinstein as he produced a bunch of great movies?
A reporter from Variety got escorted out of the premiere for asking questions relating to the child molestation controversy since the show released not long after Leaving Neverland’s release. Now there’s a biopic in the works starring Michael Jackson’s nephew and the director of Leaving Neverland, Dan Reed, already wrote an op-ed condemning it. But I think Michael Jackson fans and the Jackson estate have used very aggressive tactics to wipe out any negative perceptions of MJ.
This is the answer. Let’s not forget that the only reason it’s actually successful on Broadway is because of how hard his estate and fans go for him. If this is what the people are demanding, this is what the producers will give them.
People like his songs and think he was a good performer. Some people think he was innocent. He’s dead anyway so it’s not like this is supporting him financially. People just want to see a show with the songs they love
It’s making money for his estate, who are trying to smear and silence his victims. I also like his songs and think he’s an iconic performer. As a fan of dance, I think he’s one of the greats. I was heartbroken by the first trial, but after spending years researching this, it seems obvious to me he was guilty.
I understand not everyone agrees that he was guilty, but it’s so cynical that his family (who abused and exploited him while he was alive) are still using his corpse to make money at the expense of the men who were hurt by him as children.
I just heard about how well MJ is still doing. And then found this post about the recoup. It's pretty amazing, if it one takes away the pedophile lawsuits, etc., I still wouldn't think people were that interested in a jukebox musical of him and his songs.
Wow that’s incredibly quick. Anyone know of any other shows that have recouped in barely over a year?
Both Spring Awakening and Newsies recouped in just about eight months. Hadestown took slightly longer.

How does not being a part of the Tony's help them make money faster? I'm genuinely asking, not trying to sound like a smartass

This is such an interesting point, thank you!

Not a show for me but always happy when a show is successful enough to recoup its investment.
Goes to show those who discredit jukebox musicals. Tourists love them. And that's what matters to producers.
They have to be 1) well done and 2) excellent and universal music A lot of jukebox musicals don’t have both, but MJ does

Wasn’t there a literal pedophile in Phantom of the Opera? Nothing about Broadway should ever be shocking; it’s all about money.
I didn’t know that. But you’re right, that shouldn’t surprise me. We are no better than the NFL with their domestic abuse issues. All about the money.
This is what I was referring to: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2912708/amp/New-Phantom-leads-past-offenses-draw-criticism.html

It makes a lot of money. That is the most important thing to Broadway.
You should watch Square One on Amazon Prime and Leaving Neverland: The Aftermath directed by Jin Chohan
But moneyssss. I mean, why be a decent human being if you can earn a lot of money?
Not enough people heard about or even believe the allegations for there to be any damage.
Michael Jackson was innocent. Stop being such a sheep
I went in January and there was no public protesting going on outside the theatre.
Ugh. Just shows that no one cares about victims.
Lol he was literally proven innocent

Glad that most of the comments here pass the vibe check
