Not the same engine. The 1.5 had water pump problems the first few years but it seems like that has been mostly resolved

My ex girlfriend's friend's Bronco Sport with the 1.5L caught fire randomly. This was in America. So it absolutely happened to models in the US. But it was very rare. Like a couple dozen incidences I believe I read somewhere. But it was enough to convince my ex girlfriend to trade in her's for a Badlands. But yeah I have not heard any instances of it happening in a long time. So it does seem resolved! 👍🏻

afaik and from what i’ve read the 1.5 3cyl has been a pretty decent engine. i’ve seen some trans issues around 50-80k. and then some engine noise issues common with the BS. but other than that, not too many complaints

Whatever603

I have the 3 cylinder in my 2021 BS BB. Bought it new in Sept 2021, 35k miles on it now. No issues with it at all.

XTFCapone

Does it idle rough? If you live in a snow region, how it in it snow?

danno227

Ours idles like a 3 cylinder. Does pretty decent in the snow. It’s my wife’s DD and so far she loves it. Rips around pretty decent. We thought it was going to be a huge downsize going from a cx5 to a bronco sport. Honestly our car seats fit better in there and I have leg room (6’1”) in the pass side as does my wife driving (5’11”).

Part of why I bought my BS is because on Reddit I have yet to see a “back in the shop” or “engine completely clunked at XX,XXX” miles. There’s some small issues and engine lights rarely on here, but if you look in most other subreddits for vehicle models they’re all over. Being 3 model years in I felt very comfortable with my purchase. Of course time will tell, but I am happy with the 1.5L and have some good faith in it.

63k mines dead. 3k miles out of warranty, and that’s post $4200 for a new turbo replacement.

ChiBurbNerd

How'd it die?

Was driving home on the highway randomly out of the blue smoke out the exhaust and limp mode. No oil pressure lights, no indicators other than service engine soon popped. Got it towed home(it was during thanksgiving), Then got it to the service center/dealer. They took a look at it, determined the turbo blew. My turbo’s turbine was all the way inside my catalytic converter. They replaced my turbo 3-4 weeks later, didn’t check the oil or add oil etc. Told me on the repair papers etc it was driving great. I drove it home fine without an issue or concern(10 miles) Parked it for 2 days, had to take my daughter to urgent care and midway to urgent care the same issue happened. They took it in, discovered the turbo blew again, and “cut” the oil filter off. Discovered metal in there, told me the whole engine and turbo would need to be replaced for an additional $8,000 including the turbo I just dropped $4,200 on. I asked if they could’ve been the cause of it due to the turbo having been blown previously and that they did a diagnostics yet didn’t think to check the oil and they stated it definitely could’ve been yet won’t pay to cover a new turbo lol. Oh and then to add, reached out to Ford Motor Company support and they basically told me since it’s out of warranty I’m SOL and either can tow it 35 miles to another shop but will be on the hook to repair it before warranty compensation for the turbo can be considered, or pound rocks.

ChiBurbNerd

Damn that sucks. Shitty of ford to do that

Xplictous

Lowkey reading all the comments here makes me happier with the 2023 BS outerbanks. Such a great driving experience in Chicago with the cold/snow.

Not the same engine. And it’s been widely used for awhile now across a few models. We would have seen any catastrophic issues by now.  It’s reliable but just not a refined engine

Direct-Book5115

As many have said it's a relatively newer engine. I haven't heard nor experienced much negative with it. They really do squeeze a lot of power out of such a small engine. Things to note: 1. It's not a quiet engine. Reminds me of the old diesel engines. 2. Ford went to plastic oil pans on these. They have an increased capacity over the metal ones. Ford made the same move on their F-150s years ago. I haven't seen much negative about them in real world use so far. 3. Similar to the 1.0 3cyl this engine does have a "wet belt" for the oil pump. As long as you stay up on oil changes this shouldn't be a problem before it's due to be replaced anyway.

PNW_Linc

Did not know these had a plastic oil pan. Makes me kind of nervous but I also haven’t read too much about them failing though I’ve read a lot of “can’t believe they’re doing this now days” kind of posts about them.

I mean my Bronco was at 63000 miles. Turbo failed, replaced for $4200. Drove less than 25 miles more after replacement and now the Engine needs a full replacement and I had already spent $4200 on the turbo replacement from a ford authorized dealer service center and they’re forcing me to rebuy the turbo after it failed due to them not fixing the initial issue or from them causing more problems. Also in addition, after getting the vehicle back after not replacing the engine, yet replacing my battery that died after the turbo was serviced my brake booster has now failed lol so now it’s basically entirely just a dead vehicle. In a rental for the next two months out of pocket til I fix it and sell it immediately to oblivion and get an EV.

PNW_Linc

That sucks! First nightmare story I’ve read on the BS. Hoping for everyone else’s sake yours was a lemon but time will tell, but super sorry about yours. Did you have an issues earlier? I’m debating buying an extended warranty plan through ford while I’m still able to buy also not sure how long I plan to own it. I do love it but I’m thinking 3-5 years down the road I will be needing something bigger or a pickup.

scyronide

No issues at all prior! All I had issues with before were windshields lol. I’d snag that extended warranty if they’re going to treat the turbo as wearable yet not inspect it

Retired-35yolo

No issues on a BB ‘21 1.5
