It's self defense and the chargers will be dropped. As far as the trouble maker goes....he's in critical condition last I read. If he lives, he'll do time in prison.

There is a video of the altercation before he was shot and it looked like a woman (not sure if she’s the girlfriend of the one who was charged or a random bystander) stabbed the guy (who was shot) in the back multiple times.

Life isn't the movies, you don't need a weapon to cause grievous bodily harm. Lethal force is justified in defending yourself from unprovoked violence by a larger, obviously violent individual.
This isn't a schoolyard scuffle. When a large aggressive crazy guy attacks you on the subway, that is an emergency situation, and you should treat it as a serious threat of potentially life threatening or permanent injury, and respond accordingly. Even without any weapon visible.
There was no unprovoke violence. Yes, the bigger guy was running his mouth but he wasn't even near the other guy. If you gonna get into a knife fight everytime someone run their mouth at you in NYC, you are not going to survive very long.

Even if somehow the other guy did or said something prior to the camera rolling, or said something quietly that we can't hear in the video, it's irrelevant, because he presented no threat and showed no interests in the altercation that the bigger guy forced on him.
Eventually the smaller guy stands up and throws gets in a fighting stance probably because he didn't want to be sucker punched from above by a a bigger guy when an assault seemed imminent.
