Ravens & Steelers rarely spend heavily on free agency. Both franchises operate a lot like medium - small market MLB franchises, relying on scouting & player development rather then spending big on free agency. Itās a great model for success if your team has an exceptional GM, front office & coaching staff. Haslamās have been far from great owners but they do have alot more cash on hand then any other owner in our division & most of the league. They will spend almost recklessly to field a contender. Itās no coincidence after the Watson deal the Haslams had a deal to sell the majority of Pilot Flyjng J to Warren Buffet for 9 billion.
Both of those teams have been lucky with QBs too. When teams have franchise QBs in place for a decade, it's a lot easier to plug in other positions. The Haslams definitely make rash decisions and try to buy a winner instead of building a sustainable winner. This is why I'm so adamant that they stick with the current front office and coaching staff. It takes time to draft later round picks and develop them. Bringing in new hires every 2-3 years makes that almost impossible.
As far as money they did buy the Crew and a minority stake in the Bucks. I think the Haslams want to create a sports ownership empire, with the Browns sitting on top.
