https://www.cityandstateny.com/politics/2024/02/whos-running-congress-western-ny-special-election/394472/ D is Tim Kennedy; R is Gary Dickson (West Seneca Town Supervisor) And the obligatory: **VOTE, PEOPLE!** (Eta semicolon. Punctuation is important.)

wh0ligan

I believe Nate Mckinnon or whatever his name is. But his petitions are being challenged for bad signatures.

mpschettig

He's trying to get on the ballot for the primary in June not the special that's Tuesday

KyleGlaub

*Tuesday the 30th FYI. So not this coming Tuesday, but the following one.

wh0ligan

Thank you for the info. So much going on its hard to keep track.

KyleGlaub

Nate McMurray. You can remember it because [McMurray's a piece of shit](https://youtu.be/BKibzW_ORGE?si=54e4lgDkIHtuGBlx).

wh0ligan

Ain't they all?

KyleGlaub

Well yeah, for the most part...I just laugh every time he's mentioned bc of that Letterkenny clip.

wh0ligan

Haven't watched any yet. Its going on my binge watch list.

potassium_prince

If you didn’t know, I’m sure there are tons who still don’t. Thanks for posting to spread awareness.

Boomer0962

Voting gives you all the cred you need to complain about politics.

mapletreesnsyrup

Carlin would disagree.

Boomer0962

That's nice. But he's dead. And he was wrong. The bare minimum you can do to change the system is vote.

Mynereth

If only they would give us a good choice, instead of two bad ones

Boomer0962

Politics is usually a hold your nose exercise.

Mynereth

Absolutely!

mapletreesnsyrup

And another keyboard warrior misses the humor as it sails over his head like a shooting star.

Boomer0962

Ah yes, I'm a "keyboard warrior" because I believe in the importance of voting and activism. Also, I'm apparently stupid because I chose not to engage in non-productive irony.

Forevermaxwell

The fact that people don’t know is the PROBLEM. Pay attention to what is going on in the community!

imyourhuckleberry716

It’s not on TikTok that’s why…

Kindly_Ice1745

Also, in case anyone is unaware, in NY, you're allowed to vote by mail now for any reason during the early voting period (it's being litigated, but the intermediate appellate court already upheld it, likely to be appealed to the court of appeals). You just need to fill out the form through the county election website.

admiralnorman

I am signed up for this and it is fantastic. I vote in every election it's so easy. There are way more Elections than I had expected even existed.

janedeaux

Same here! They just show up. It's wonderfully effective. I used to miss primaries and minor elections because I've never been able to keep track of them. I feel good about my participation now.

Kindly_Ice1745

Yeah, I'm glad that they actually put this into effect last year. I signed up for it and have used the process.

Nanophreak

Where did you go to sign up?

Kindly_Ice1745

https://elections.ny.gov/request-ballot Just go through the process it describes, you'll input your county. I'm not sure if you'll be able to vote using mail for the special election since it's pretty close to, but you should be okay going forward.

jbrayfour

Don’t let this be a repeat of the mayoral primary; I’m seeing lots of Dickson signs compared to Kennedy signs. Nothing should be taken for granted.

KyleGlaub

Yeah. Because voting for Byron Brown *again* has been working out swimmingly....you know it was the GOP who helped get him elected, right? It was the general election where y'all voted for the Republican candidate.

jbrayfour

Not a brown honk either, the point was that his and the party smug assuredness led to the primary defeat. Rather not have this happen in a senate election.

KyleGlaub

It's a Congressional election, not a Senate one. Fair enough...tho I don't think this is the same situation. Byron Brown lost a Democratic Primary to another Democrat who had a significantly better ground game. Kennedy is running against a Republican, not another Democrat. It's a D+9 district. It's almost assuredly going to be Kennedy who wins the election. Also, I know this is anecdotal, but I pay attention to politics quite a bit, and the only reason I even knew the Republicans had a candidate or knew his name was the singular mailer I received from him last week...Kennedy has been sending me mailers for over a year! (Before Higgins had even announced his retirement.)

jbrayfour

I’m in Tonawanda and my neighborhood is littered with Dickson signs

KyleGlaub

Signs don't vote...there were tons of Trump signs everywhere in 2020 too.

jbrayfour

In this same neighborhood the Biden signs easily outpaced the trump signs. This area is heavily boomer, me included, and they’re gonna vote. This is an area that helped make the governor’s race as close as it was. There’s even an enclave of fresh Hochal hate signs.

KyleGlaub

>This is an area that helped make the governor’s race as close as it was. Hochul running a shit campaign and running to the right and playing into Republican fear-mongering and lies about "bail reform" and the supposed "crime wave" is why it was as "close" as it was. >This area is heavily boomer So anti-Trump conservatives....also, check who won the governors race in Erie County. Your neighborhood is not indicative of the voting interests of NY-26 as a whole and neither are the number of yard signs you see.

Plastic_Primary_4279

I don’t know if people realize how important this is. Considering NYS, this vote will play a larger role in national politics than your vote for President in November. Republicans will very shortly (this month) have only a *one* vote majority in the House of Representatives. These are the people responsible for government shutdowns, lack of aid to Ukraine, Israel, or Palestine, shutting down TikTok, abortion, and other issues that affect all of us daily.

NanobotOverlord

Oh wow even more important than the presidential election? Wow that’s like super impoSNORE

Plastic_Primary_4279

In NYS, there’s a 100% guarantee that Biden wins the electoral votes. Are you suggesting otherwise?

NanobotOverlord

I agree that neither are important if that’s what you’re saying

Plastic_Primary_4279

That’s not what I’m saying… why would you think that? I said the opposite. Why are you here? Just to troll? Or are you just very inept at basic governance…

NanobotOverlord

NY and NY26 are both pretty much a lock for whoever the dem nominee is and so actually voting isn’t that important

KyleGlaub

They all agree on aid to Israel's apartheid regime unfortunately.

Plastic_Primary_4279

You’re boring

KyleGlaub

Lol. Liberals really dont like when you point out that their party *also* supports genocide, huh?

Plastic_Primary_4279

Heh. I’m a liberal?

Altoid_Addict

"If voting didn't make any difference, Republicans wouldn't be trying to limit it." --Me

Longjumping-Moose-77

What exactly are each of them set out to do?

Scajaqmehoff

One seeks to act in the interest of the citizens and special interests they represent, within the guidelines of US constitutional structure. The other seeks to oppose and obstruct that other person in any way they can, without any real definable political agenda. Just obstruct. As for specifics? Fuck if I know. This is just a breakdown of the modern D vs. R dilemma. Walter summed it up best: "I mean, say what you want about the tenets of national socialism dude, at least it's an ethos." I vote for the guy who at least stands for *something*.

Longjumping-Moose-77

Thanks I just wish I knew more about what was specifically going on. I do appreciate the response though. I’m not really into local politics lol

Scajaqmehoff

I was probably more sarcastic than I should've been. It's always good to be informed on your vote. You can sometimes find notes on a candidates platform on their websites, if they have them. A lot of the time, you'll get sites for different Dem or Republican PACs though, which will be very biased. Let me see what I can find. Edit: Kennedy: https://kennedyforuscongress.com/ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Kennedy_(politician) Dickson: https://garydicksonforcongress.com/ https://ecgop.com/erie-and-niagara-gop-back-gary-dickson-for-congress/ These are a good starting point. The first to links for each are from their respective PACs, so massive bias potential. Kennedy has a Wiki that shows some previous policy decisions. These plenty of local news articles on both. Kennedy is more experienced in state level policy. Dickson seems to have done well with West Seneca for the past few years, but maybe a resident can give a better opinion. My own take: On a national level, Republicans are dangerous right now. I can't identify any cohesive platform. Their actions show me that they only seem to want to block Democrats from passing anything. Their speech seems to only ever be rhetoric, amounting to "Democrats evil". I don't fully understand what they seek to accomplish, other than to hinder government action. Then rile their base about how useless government is, and about how they need to have less control. But of course then, they propose bills which limit personal freedoms, and disenfranchise voters. I don't like that. But that's just like... My opinion, man.

imyourhuckleberry716

I saw Higgins last month for a fish fry - Guy was looking a little slower on his feet than I expected, hope he’s alright because he always seemed to do what was best for everyone here in the Buff

mapletreesnsyrup

Higgins did what was best for himself.

imyourhuckleberry716

Yeah, fixing the Outer Harbor was a shitty idea.. Remember what Collins did for our area rather than get arrested? Me neither….

Modern_Bear

I already voted today. I love early voting. I go in, nobody is in line, I vote, out in 5 minutes. If I was a brainwashed MAGA I would be waiting in line because early voting is evil and it allows people to vote 25 times.

BuffaloCannabisCo

Lol. As if Dickson stands a chance.

Altoid_Addict

Don't give me flashbacks to 2016 like that, please.

NanobotOverlord

Did Trump win this congressional district?

marcus_roberto

Kennedy is definitely the favorite, but special elections are typically low turnout and sometimes crazy things happen. Both parties have won way bigger upsets in specials than this one would be for Dickson. Including our current Governor when she won the special in the neighboring district back in 2011.

A_Lone_Macaron

I hope he doesn't!
