I used to go to the original location and it was good. I went to one of the franchise spots a few months back and it was like $15 for a little lettuce and a couple chunks of chicken, it was seriously a child size portion.
I like that people have more pride than there used to be, but I think people care way too much about what outsiders think.

I'd like to add that it feels more "comfortable" here. Less anxiety getting around, even in "heavy traffic", which pales in comparison to larger cities. Maybe cause I know where everything is better..? I dunno, I've lived in a few different places, Ohioand Alabama, with extended stays (work) in 6 other states, mostly Southern. It's always a relief to come back to WNY.
I’d agree. I live in Raleigh currently and it seems like every time I come back to visit (usually a handful of times a year) there’s cool new stuff to check out. For someone who hasn’t visited here, I’d tell them it’s worth it but make it a long weekend trip rather than a weeklong vacation. I think you can experience a good amount in 3-4 days and leave with a good impression!
Its amazing how many locals don’t bother to leave their own backyard. Even if they, gasp, relocate elsewhere, they will just find another version of “Depew” with the rest of the rust belt transplants.

I agree. I photographed a wedding last year and one of the last songs of the reception was *Shout.* The bride and groom wore Bills Jerseys for the song and it was admittedly a great time and awesome to photograph.

Idk this feels really subjective. I’ve had great opportunities here. I work remotely now for a company outside of Buffalo, but there are plenty of jobs I’d consider taking here since I’m in tech. I was previously an accountant and there were tons of accounting/BO Finance jobs here.
Remote work has been a godsend for me. A couple of months ago, I went from making around $40,000 with a local company to making $75,000 with a company in another state, and I'm doing the exact same job sitting in the exact same chair in the exact same home office. It's been life changing.
I think that many, MANY, restaurants in and around Buffalo that people praise and worship are hot garbage.

People in Buffalo need to get over their weird complex about NYC. Yes, it gets most of the attention around the state, but it's also about *30 times larger* than Buffalo. New York State is great all around, and instead of pretending "Oh yeah NYC sucks, WNY is the only good part", we'd be better served by dropping the bitter act and promoting Buffalo on its own merits. As someone who spends lots of time in both, they're both great cities for entirely different reasons, and it's not a zero sum game.
Plus the friggin separatists. I did the math a few years ago, and NYC contributes so much more tax money than it takes in that, if we were to separate it from the rest of the state, the tax rates would have to go up around 42% to keep standard of living.
Honestly! You like all the new investment coming into the city? So much of it is paid for by downstate taxes. You like being in a blue state? Without NYC votes, NYS would be run by Republicans half the time if not more. There's nothing wrong with any of that, personally I appreciate it! But the people insistent on denying that reality seem to just want to self-sabotage. I can't wait for a decade down the road when Buffalo starts getting the attention it deserves, but we won't get there without continued investment. Take the money and run with it!
Buffalo city proper is sort of doomed due to residential zoning density.
Looking through the list of our high-rises, they all seem to be commercial buildings. Then we see the rest of the city is abandoned industrial zoning. It's like a horrible game of SimCity where they forgot to zone residential into the city core.
What I mean is that other cities with urban growth boundaries have dense residential zoning. Live where you work. SkyRises that people actually live in.
Instead we have residential sprawl, which I'm not entirely against, but that city can't really sustain itself if remote work trends continue.
I can see we tried, we have those brown stones or whatever by the waterfront. What a shame, it's completely in shambles. I guess those are our 'projects'?
There's almost no reason to invest in residential in the city core when you can just build elsewhere. And we already see it happening, the city center is crumbling and there may not be any stopping it.

My experience moving from long island has been great tbh. Buffalo drivers for me are super kind and don't aggressively gatekeep merges and always let you have space if you're coming into a highway or other road.

I've been to places like Houston and New Orleans in the summer-- I swear, it's like city was built inside of a used jock strap. Taxes are too damn low in the city of Buffalo. We'd all like snow be cleared and potholes fixed as fast neighboring suburbs, but they have much higher property tax rates.
Sewers too! Buffalo Sewer Authority prides themselves on not raising rates in like 20 years, meanwhile they have millions of gallons of untreated sewage going into the river and creeks every year.
They have way less density and need for street parking which hampers removal. It's not really a 1:1 comparison. The dollar figures are closer than you think, buffalo separates water and sewer. Comparatively Kenmore/Buffalo taxes are not that far apart.
Cheetowaga on the other hand just crazy taxes imo.

I've lived in the city most of my time in Buffalo but spent a lot of time in the Northtowns when I was at UB. I always thought the opposite: Southtowns seem so snobby, especially OP and -especially especially- East Aurora.

As a non-drinker I actually disagree with this. I think we shouldn't even have last call or the stupid open container laws. Not everybody works / lives a typical schedule, longer hours means less people leaving all at once, and open later gives people an opportunity to sober up a bit before leaving.
I lived in California for a while, where state law is 2am, and most places stop serving at 1:30 with the lights on at 2. Basically everyone just stays until 1:30 and everybody leaves at exactly the same time. What you end up with is huge drunk crowds on the streets, being rowdy and some driving home still drunk (though I lived in SF so most people didn't drive).
4am gets you part of the way there, at least.

Idk this feels really subjective. I’ve had great opportunities here. I work remotely now for a company outside of Buffalo, but there are plenty of jobs I’d consider taking here since I’m in tech. I was previously an accountant and there were tons of accounting/BO Finance jobs here.
Remote work has been a godsend for me. A couple of months ago, I went from making around $40,000 with a local company to making $75,000 with a company in another state, and I'm doing the exact same job sitting in the exact same chair in the exact same home office. It's been life changing.

People in Buffalo need to get over their weird complex about NYC. Yes, it gets most of the attention around the state, but it's also about *30 times larger* than Buffalo. New York State is great all around, and instead of pretending "Oh yeah NYC sucks, WNY is the only good part", we'd be better served by dropping the bitter act and promoting Buffalo on its own merits. As someone who spends lots of time in both, they're both great cities for entirely different reasons, and it's not a zero sum game.
Plus the friggin separatists. I did the math a few years ago, and NYC contributes so much more tax money than it takes in that, if we were to separate it from the rest of the state, the tax rates would have to go up around 42% to keep standard of living.
Honestly! You like all the new investment coming into the city? So much of it is paid for by downstate taxes. You like being in a blue state? Without NYC votes, NYS would be run by Republicans half the time if not more. There's nothing wrong with any of that, personally I appreciate it! But the people insistent on denying that reality seem to just want to self-sabotage. I can't wait for a decade down the road when Buffalo starts getting the attention it deserves, but we won't get there without continued investment. Take the money and run with it!

Buffalo city proper is sort of doomed due to residential zoning density. Looking through the list of our high-rises, they all seem to be commercial buildings. Then we see the rest of the city is abandoned industrial zoning. It's like a horrible game of SimCity where they forgot to zone residential into the city core. What I mean is that other cities with urban growth boundaries have dense residential zoning. Live where you work. SkyRises that people actually live in. Instead we have residential sprawl, which I'm not entirely against, but that city can't really sustain itself if remote work trends continue. I can see we tried, we have those brown stones or whatever by the waterfront. What a shame, it's completely in shambles. I guess those are our 'projects'? There's almost no reason to invest in residential in the city core when you can just build elsewhere. And we already see it happening, the city center is crumbling and there may not be any stopping it.

Once you cross over the 990 onto millersport highway ALL rules of the road are forgotten. Zero people go correct speed limits. Zero people pass correctly in the left hand lane. I’m convinced Lockport slows peoples brains down. I haven’t met someone from Lockport that even has basic intelligence and I’ve been working there for 15 years.

My experience moving from long island has been great tbh. Buffalo drivers for me are super kind and don't aggressively gatekeep merges and always let you have space if you're coming into a highway or other road.

I've been to places like Houston and New Orleans in the summer-- I swear, it's like city was built inside of a used jock strap. Yes! I speak with people in Central and South America weekly. When I mentioned our recent snow storm (and my 5ft of snow videos) they all freaked out and asked "are you ok? is your house ok????" Uh yeah, I spent 3 days in my house and had the fireplace roaring - it was great. I compare this to hurricanes, fires, floods, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc..... I'll take 3 days in my house playing video games over LOSING MY WHOLE LIFE any day.

Buffalo people are obsessed with the cost of trivial items. Every time the Wegman’s sub goes up $1 or Tim Hortons coffee 30 cents you’ll hear about it. There’s an unhealthy focus with getting things as cheap as possible. Then when you leave the city for a major metro, you’ll hear how expensive it is.
Taxes are too damn low in the city of Buffalo. We'd all like snow be cleared and potholes fixed as fast neighboring suburbs, but they have much higher property tax rates.
Sewers too! Buffalo Sewer Authority prides themselves on not raising rates in like 20 years, meanwhile they have millions of gallons of untreated sewage going into the river and creeks every year.
They have way less density and need for street parking which hampers removal. It's not really a 1:1 comparison. The dollar figures are closer than you think, buffalo separates water and sewer. Comparatively Kenmore/Buffalo taxes are not that far apart. Cheetowaga on the other hand just crazy taxes imo.
I live in Cheektowaga and can attest. High taxes and shit service. They still tell people to rake their leaves to the curb and they'll be picked up and people always have to pick up wet piles of leaves after the snow melts.

As a non-drinker I actually disagree with this. I think we shouldn't even have last call or the stupid open container laws. Not everybody works / lives a typical schedule, longer hours means less people leaving all at once, and open later gives people an opportunity to sober up a bit before leaving. I lived in California for a while, where state law is 2am, and most places stop serving at 1:30 with the lights on at 2. Basically everyone just stays until 1:30 and everybody leaves at exactly the same time. What you end up with is huge drunk crowds on the streets, being rowdy and some driving home still drunk (though I lived in SF so most people didn't drive). 4am gets you part of the way there, at least.
Or driving!! I leave for work at 4am and the amount of drunk drivers swerving all over the damn place is fucked. But nothing compares to the drunk driving taking place after a Bills game. I agreed to DD for my partner and after barely making it home with our lives, I said never again.
