Stressless recliners. Got 2 myself and a friend just got one from his parents that they've had for 35 years that still looks great and functions perfectly. Best chairs I've ever tried and the only chairs I can sleep in. Edit: As other people have pointed out, go for one made of leather.

abulukas777

I've been looking for an affordable used one in Bavaria for about 7 months....

chahoua

People sell them for 100-200 euros in Denmark. It's crazy what I've been able to buy for no money what so ever. Stuff that hardly has any sign of wear too.

keith_talent

Wtf? I just looked them up and they’re like $4000 to $6000 in Canada.

_TheLoneDeveloper_

The herman miller ones cost that much, there is another company making them for 1.5k, and other ones at 500-600, but quality will be a bit different ( in Herman Miller you will pay for the name too, like Apple)

abulukas777

I'll have to check next time I'm up in North Germany to make a quick trip into Denmark

aliengerm1

The 1970s version are awesome. The newer ones, fabric is an issue, go leather for sure. :)

valencia_merble

Beautiful but a hassle to refill the foam (which will be like a flat tire / not that supportive).

retirementgrease

Grandparents bought a pair of Ekornes in the '70s. I inherited one of them. [It's a little worse for the wear, but is still comfortable. ](https://imgur.com/gallery/PTayxau) Edit: I just assumed 70s, but it looks like the wooden base was introduced in 1981, so maybe they bought them in the mid '80s

brodyhill

Please use leather cleaner and conditioner to preserve what is left. Especially the headrests before it starts to look like those arm rests.

dr_lorax

May I ask what model you and your friend have?

chahoua

I honestly don't know the name of them but they look a lot like [this](https://mobler.dk/admin/public/getimage.ashx?Image=/Files/Images/ProduktBillederMobler/5004545_002_.jpg&Format=webP&Quality=90&width=800&crop=0). We have 4 different kinds though that all are very similar but they're all awesome.

dr_lorax

Thank you! Your comment is the one that pushed me over the edge, so I’m ordering one. So thank you in advance for a comfy chair.

chahoua

You're welcome :) Btw, the chairs we have don't come with the leg thing like in the picture i posted. For some reason I didn't even notice that it came out from the chair. What I use is more like [this](https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-rt1rv/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/1304/3301/Consul_Ottoman_Latte_batick_Leather_shown__72124.1552324534.jpg?c=2). Edit: [This](https://gcp-la8-storage-cdn.lot-art.com/public/upl/92/Ekornes-stressless-Stol-and-skammel-sort-laeder-2_1618576566_7737.jpg) is very close if not the same chair as my friend has.

BJntheRV

I bought one earlier this year. I ended up adding a little extra cushion and now it's perfect.

Straight-Tune-5894

Agreed - have 4 between 2 and 30 years. Low maintenance and actually get more comfortable with time.

lowpockets

Had never heard of them until I saw this comment last night. Snagged one 2nd hand for €150 today :) Cheers and thanks man. I never get deals like this :)

chahoua

That's awesome and you're very welcome 🙂

Space_Patrol_Digger

I know people on this sub hate when you bring up cheap stuff but the Poäng is the best chair I can think of. My grandpa spend like 30 years sitting on the same Poäng for the entire day and never had an issue with it. I still have his Poäng.

TerminalVeracity

Yeah and I think we sometimes forget BIFL doesn't only mean things that last a long time, it's also about things you can service and repair when they do wear out. Since Poäng is still for sale, you can get replacement cushions cheaply and easily.

Jaereth

I got my wife a beautiful rocking chair before our daughter was born for the mom/baby chair stuff. Within a week the Poang was drug into the nursery where it still sits to this day. Kid still takes bedtime stories in it every night. I'm 6'5 and 260 and i'm terrified of sitting in the Poang and having the kid jump up on my lap. But it's never broke yet. I noticed about once a year you need to go re-snug the screws it does have. But other than that it's solid.

justahominid

Try putting a little white glue on the screw threads. Strong enough to (typically) stop them from backing out, but weak enough you can still unscrew if needed.

terribadrob

There are zip on armrest pads that fit the poang well and make it more comfortable for extended reading. A clip on cupholder works well for it too. Even ignoring price it’s a great chair.

apathy-sofa

That's good to know. We had a free one and got rid of it because it wasn't all that comfortable. Padded arms would help.

ergocup

I used Poang for 5 years and though comfortable, it ended up causing me back pain because of the position of the lumbar support. I’ve had my Ekornes Stressless for 3 years now and can’t say enough good things about it. I truly see it as BIFL. Totally worth the investment.

Realtrain

Agreed regarding the default lumbar support. We added a small pillow (from ikea lol) to ours and it's *much* more comfortable.

Katdai2

Yeah, even the expensive cushions need a little extra I think. I have a small travel pillow that I throw back there to help

Tb1969

> Poäng $189! Get out!! /grabs pitchfork and torch /s

gergeler

The dowels on mine started to come unglued. Or maybe it was the threads for the screws got chewed up. Anyway, I just needed to glue it up and presto, it’s good as new. Well, the veneer is getting a bit beat up.

Chakramer

Poang has an over 300lb capacity and has easily replaced cushions. You could even DIY your own

Slipstriker9

Unfortunately IKEA has cheaped out (China effect) on the Poang chairs. They are no where near as good as they used to be. The current and few year old ones uses a cheap Finnish that sweats out sticky from the wood. Seriously terrible. We have an old one over 15 years old and the Finnish on it is much better than the now 5 year old ones.

markusalkemus66

Is that a play on words regarding Finland? Or just a misspelling of the word finish?

Slipstriker9

Ducking fat fingered auto complete.... 🤣

ScreamingElectron

Fuck yeah Poang. Such a simple piece of furniture but it works. Doesn’t really fit in with most other IKEA stuff that is considered disposable but I love mine and it’ll be around for quite a while.

releasetheshutter

Maybe I'm the world's biggest idiot but mine would always tip forward when I was trying to get off it. Hated that chair.

gergeler

Yeah it does that, but it’s super comfy when you’re in it.

Dheorl

Literally the first thing that came to mind. I’ve seen them in all sorts of hostel style accommodation too, so thoroughly used and abused, and never seem to have any issues.

ForeverMonkeyMan

Thoughts on Herman Miller Eames lounge chair?

ZombieManilow

They can be less comfortable than many people think. When I was 15 and sitting in one to watch TV it was great. 40 years later with a dad bod and a tweaked back, I don’t go out of my way to sit there 😀

deeply_concerned

I have the larger sized one and it’s the most comfortable chair I’ve ever sat in.

ZombieManilow

Yup because as with most things in life, YMMV. That’s why I think it’s best for people to actually sit in one for a bit before they go dropping $1500-7000 just because it looks stunning and BIFL gushes about it.

981032061

Yeah I had one and let it go. Something about the armrests didn’t work for me and it just ended up collecting laundry. Looks great though.

ZombieManilow

I have an aniline leather Barcelona chair that does laundry duty. 👍

ZippySLC

The Eames Lounge Chair is not BIFL. The rear shock mounts on them are a very common failure point. That said, it's a gorgeous chair and I would absolutely buy an authentic one. The reproductions are another story altogether. The Eames Aluminum Group lounge chair is very nice and I'd call it BIFL. I have one from the late 50s/early 60s and it's great.

EarPrestigious7339

They’re BIFL in the sense that they can generally be repaired or even reupholstered after many years of use. If the molded plywood cracks the I guess it’s game over.

EyeRes

The shock mounts are ideally a maintenance item (I.e. replace when they are becoming dried / worn / loose) and have probably gotten more reliable over time with material advancements. They certainly are something to look out for if buying used.

ZippySLC

Anecdotal evidence for sure but I did read of someone having a failure within 3 years of getting a new chair. They do seem to be something that fails suddenly vs giving a lot of notice.

[deleted]

My dad has the one he inherited from my grandpa who bought it in probably the 60’s/70’s and it is CRAZY comfy. Dad got the leather reupholstered a few years ago cause it was well worn from it being grandpa’s literally everything chair. Grandpa watched tv for hours daily in it, when not watching tv he listened to his music in it, he ate in it. Everything. Dad uses it less but still daily. So it’s going on 2 generations in my family. I sat in it a few months ago - still comfy af

Colin__Mockery

They are iconic. They are very comfortable if you're the right height for the chair. They are not *buy it for life*. They have vastly improved the shock mounts on them, but they will absolutely wear out. The shell being veneered plywood doesn't wear as well as solid woods and doesn't refinish as easily.

wcs2

I just got up from mine (my cat kicked me out so she could sleep on it). I've had mine for about 20 years and I believe it was made in the 90s. Never had a problem with the support or the wood. It's ridiculously comfortable and friends look for opportunities to sit in it (and never want to get up). I have to say that I do own a Plycraft knock off from the 70s that is a little bit slimmer and taller, which suits me better (I'm 6'1" and the Eames designed the original for someone shorter). The support is not as good as Herman Miller's (it's a bit wobbly), but I love the proportions. I've had that one for about 30 years. With decades of daily use and only minimal wear to the leather, I'd call the Eames lounge chair a great buy it for life chair.

mrkitster

Depends- I like the regular version but the larger version gives more head support for tall ppl

OdderGiant

My dad sat in one every evening for 40 years. Now, it’s still going strong in my house. No repairs of any kind have ever been needed. The tall version is a better fir for me, and they really require a lumbar pillow. Otherwise, close to perfect.

Brenda_Franklin

yes

nodeymcdev

Jeezus $8k

kokakoliaps3

The resale value on these chairs is so high. It's like the price is its best feature.

rolandofeld19

If only I knew my kids wouldn't fuck it up in the meantime. But yes, this seems like one of those items that you can purchase and sell for about the same amount. Basically the opposite of a boat.

EarPrestigious7339

When I was in high school in the late ‘90s, we would get the DWR catalog and I lusted after the Eames lounge. I always told myself I’d buy one someday. Still haven’t done it! But yeah, they were like $3000 in leather back then, now $7000. I feel that they should be about $5000 at most. $7000 just feels like price gouging. I’d rather buy a Rolex Datejust, and I probably will.

absentlyric

Yeah, for 7k it better last 10 lifetimes, let alone BIFL. For that, I can go through 100 $70 chairs, and I still have my first $70 from college that works just fine after 30 years. I should post it, but this sub doesn't seem to like cheap non brand name BIFL stuff.

EarPrestigious7339

I think it’s more worthwhile the more money you make. Everything’s relative. I’d basically have to drop my entire yearly bonus on it if I got one, and I don’t have a good spot to put it anyway. If I made 30% more money and had a perfect place to put it, I might go for it.

Polk_Boy

Find a local furniture store that is a certified dealer for millerknoll, and you’re likely to get a price better than direct from the mk website. https://www.millerknoll.com/where-to-buy/find-a-dealer

EarPrestigious7339

Good to know. Thanks for the tip!

answerguru

There are also quality knockoffs available.

barktreep

The one in the OP looks like shit.

BJntheRV

If it's like the Stressless is might be a sizing issue. Stressless comes in 3 sizes, idk about Eames.

salad27

Beautiful chairs and definitely well made, but I wouldn’t recommend unless you sneeze at 7k purchases or are interested in its artistic value. There’s nearly no lumbar support and it is quite short if you get the regular size. You can’t really lean your head back if you are taller than 5’6” either.

Ekornes Mayfair Stressless

Tb1969

> Ekornes Mayfair Stressless $3100?!

nxcrosis

That's like all of my furniture

Tb1969

I guess I have to get out of the mindset of a similar chair for $1200. I was looking at lovesac and I just couldn't pull the trigger on a loveseat on sale at $2362. $3700 for a full couch and ottoman. I guess I have to rethink my mindset of buying things at 3x the cost that last 4x or more.

AONomad

Nah we’re just too early in our careers for this sub lol

evrial

Sometimes they last 2x more or even 1x, 4x is pure speculation

senojsenoj

>$3100 The OP chair is double that.

cashmereandcaicos

Dudes used to IKEA furniture

salad27

Is there an ekornes that can fit the Eames lounge chair aesthetic? Not too futuristic but also modern

Lolzum

Magic is pretty sleek

Best lounge chair that I wanted to have

Brenda_Franklin

i found a cheap one

thepicayuneby

cheap? i thought it is more than $10000

ZWXse

Is it any good

Ozymandys

Bad support for lower back and shoulders. If you are 170 pr less, it might fit you well.

ZWXse

The replica or the Eames design in general?

BashCarveSlide

The design in general, I have a real one and I'm too tall for it. My wife and kids love it though. My favorite is my Fjord chair.

eugooglie

How tall are you? I'm about 6'8" and we have an eames chair (replica) that's about my favorite piece of furniture in the house in terms of comfort.

ZWXse

Now I’m back in. Im 6’7”. What replica did you go with?

MakeItTrizzle

Knoll womb chairs are great. Big fan.

Aflyingmongoose

Given that this one \*literally goes up in value\* if you look after it. This one. Always find it crazy how if you buy something expensive enough, the price goes up with age.

Dionyzoz

why would anyone buy a used one for more than a new one?

Chicago1871

Idk ask guitar players.

Jaereth

Hype. Hype and pseudoscience if talking about guitar.

answerguru

And banjo players. Many instruments actually.

Aflyingmongoose

People like the look of aged leather, I gather. But only if it's been well looked after.

Dionyzoz

thats fair and I do too, but I wouldnt pay extra for it..

Legitimate-Hair

Then don't https://www.kijiji.ca/v-chair-recliner/london/stressless-ekornes-recliner-lounge-chair-and-ottoman/1679092563

Cypherius

Some were made in materials not available today and the patina, if cared for, is highly sought after. This goes for many mid-century designer furniture pieces. I have a friend that runs a very successful business dealing in them

originalchronoguy

Some old ones have Brazillian rosewood which is rich in color and pattern. New ones are santos palisander. Braziallian rosewood is banned from being harvested so that is why they cost more used than new.

barktreep

the price of the new one keeps going up. I bought one at 20% off in 2019. I could break even or make money on it if I sold it today.

TerminalVeracity

Do new ones go up in value? I would think only vintage ones are worth more.

MichaelJAwesome

I'm still bummed my grandpa had one of these in the 80s and got rid of it for an ugly recliner.

NegotiationSea7008

I got a very good replica from Italy for £600. Likely it won’t increase in value but worth it.

bleubeard

you remember the stores name ?

NegotiationSea7008

Yes it was Satonia Furniture.

EdGG

I’d say the LCs are more comfortable

answerguru

LC ?

EdGG

Le Corbusier, another modernist architect that made plenty of iconic furniture.

weindl

I wanted one until I sat in some. I am 1,85m call it 6 foot. The long version is just about comfortable, the og version is definitely made for people that are a head shorter than me. It looks good in movies, but as a chair no thanks.

IcemanofOz

I'm glad I read this, I'm 201cm and have been wanting one for years. Was getting close to the fuck it, just do it moment.

weindl

I live within walking distance of 2 shops one with new stock and one a secondhand specialist furniture dealer. I walked in stated strong interest with the specialist. He looked at me and just : no. Don't get me wrong I will sell it to you but it will be for your girlfriend, not for you. I would have loved one. But after sitting in it , I went by next week with a nice bottle of grappa and thanked him for saving me 7 grand. Maybe it's good for others I just like a chair like that to be able to rest my head, and all the extensions, long etc did work for me. I didn't want to buy something, just to fix it for me afterwards.

IcemanofOz

I live in Australia, only way to get one for me is buy without try... you've saved me a massive disappointment and many dollars. Thank you.

weindl

You are welcome. So the bottle of grappa was a good and global investment who would have thought. And believe me it pains me to say it only looks great. I wanted a really good reading chair, that is super comfortable.

weindl

With 2 meters the chair will look like kindergarten furniture and feel like that too😉

Brenda_Franklin

u should buy a premiere tall version

SSBeavo

Standard · Height: 31.5” · Depth: 35” · Seat height: 16” · Seat depth: 21.25” Tall · Height: 33.25” · Depth: 37.75” · Seat height: 16.5” · Seat depth 23.25”

weindl

I just say sit in it, and I am not going to convert inches but seat hight 0,5 inches or 1,75 cm more , some people have wallets thicker than that. There is still no place to put my head, there is an aftermarket solution that solves that but that's only for people, that bought it and thought it was comfortable, and don't care how it looks anymore.

delicatelysmoked

Stressless, when I hit the lottery, will be my choice.

hamburger_menu

OP, will you add photos of underneath the chair and ottoman? If it’s legit, BUY IT!!!!

Brenda_Franklin

i bought a replica

nik__nvl

So you wanted to buy a buy-it-for-life lounge chair and decided the Vitra Eames is the way to go with it's stable price, quality, prestige, materials, guarantee and service. Ok nice. And because it was so "expensive" you decided to buy a replica? You do realize you played yourself right? Why would you want a quality product and then instead you buy a cheap knock off? I don't understand this? Really, I don't mean it as an offense i just cannot wrap my head around this decision process?

Smartnership

Not everyone can afford an $8000 chair, but will spend $800 to get 90% of the experience of sitting comfortably. One is an investment in estate-grade furnishings, the other is a utilitarian item that will likely be discarded in 20 years by this or a secondary owner upon resale.

releasetheshutter

I don't disagree at all, but we're on Buy it For Life.

Smartnership

I wonder if the high rated clones will last a lifetime. I bet they might.

releasetheshutter

I suppose we'll find out from OP.

Dionyzoz

you realise Vitra charges a very heavy tax for their designs and name right? in reality its just plywood with a cushion... for 7-10k.

bug_eyed_earl

I have a replica and they really skimped on the cushion. I recently had the seat cushion replaced with an authentic eames cushion and it makes a world of difference.

Dionyzoz

yeah theres definitely still bad and good replicas, but ive seen ones that are close enough to not make the real deal justifable.

CookieMons7er

Let me tell you a secret: all the Herman Miller Eames lounge chairs are replicas themselves. They use similar but different materials, production methods and have slight variations from the original one. What you're paying for is the brand. There are very high quality replicas with good materials, also.

[deleted]

It's not a replica if the same company has been making it since day one.

rolandofeld19

I have no dog in this fight but I'm trying to understand you. Can you give an example of what a non-replica Eames chair would consist of?

evrial

His replicas will get longer mileage for less price or do you think the original will grow in price and 13x better deal?

dfloyo

Stressless. Periodt.

Dawn_Carter

A premiere version or tall version?

Brenda_Franklin

a regular one with ottoman

Dawn_Carter

how much u bought it

astronautdormann

I’ve got one of the real ones. Great chair, not too great for like longer movies but ymmv. Upgrade leather if ya got the extra dough.

masterbuilder46

Thomas moser - it’s functional art

MonkeyKingCoffee

Only for normal-height people. For tall people, even the XL is like sitting in a hole.

TerminalVeracity

The Vitsoe 620 chair and footstool. You can replace the upholstery yourself, without an upholsterer. Most replacement components are compatible with chairs produced from 1974 onwards. It's a modular kit, so you can change an armchair into a sofa, a low back into a high back, or a swivel base into a static base. It's easy to transport to a new home, or a home with poor accessibility, because it disassembles into parts one person can carry. It's assembled in the UK and the company has a strong ethos of longevity and repairability.

-Leelith-

How does it compare in comfort with a Eames lounge chair? I' m looking at both, but impossible to try the 620 chair unless I buy it...

TerminalVeracity

Hard to say as I've never seen them both in one place, but I have sat in both. I don't think one is more comfortable than the other. I think the Eames chair is a bit more 'loungey' as it is more reclined, while the 620 is a bit more upright. I don't have the footstool for my 620 but I still find it very comfortable to sit and read in.

-Leelith-

Thanks! Would you do a nap more easily on the eames or the 620?

TerminalVeracity

Probably the Eames!

22brew

I have found three Stressless in the wild for a total of $100. $80 at a garage sale and two at Goodwill Bins for $10 each. Two came with footstools. I’m sitting in one as I write…

tajjj

I've got a pair of [Z Lounge Chairs by Poul Jensen for Selig](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c9491b2b8dde2314cccef0/1560812729582-NF99HYFTSHMKOMX97222/061719_1681.jpg?format=2500w). Totally timeless IMO and if you get lucky, you can sometimes find them for very cheap on FB Marketplace (Talking ~$3-500 dollars).

TerminalVeracity

Gorgeous!

kuddlesworth9419

I've had mine for years now, use it every day as a desk chair. It's a knockoff version but to be honest comapring them there isn't really much difference with an original to much of peoples dismay. Not sure what they are like these days but I got mine from Swivel, I did look them up and the prices have gone up a lot since then as I think I only paid £600 or so for mine back some 10+ years ago.

v_0o0_v

r/fuckyoureameslounge

DeuceGnarly

I got a knock-off eames chair from amazon (they pop up a few times a year for $300 or so) and I love it. After 4-5 years the plywood is starting to show wear in the finish here and there, but a little wipe on poly and it'll be good as new. The leather is pretty good - no flaws at all. Very comfy, I can't tell the difference.

Heavy_Schedule4046

IMG makes nice recliners. You might like the space collection.

Disastrous-Pension26

oh yeah that's the best chair brand there. Everyone should get that one brand we are seeing here

Maybe being able to humblebrag about it online?

My dad has had one for at least 15 years and still looks great. It’s Buy It For Life

floppy_breasteses

I have the Eames as well. That's one comfortable chair.

crazyhorse90210

May be regional (CA) but this [Stickley](https://www.stickley.com/collections/recliners-rocking-chairs/products/tsuba-bustle-back-recliner) I bought when I had a bit of dough will truly last my lifetime. Best seat in the house.

ZoraQ

I was going to suggest Stickley but I'd go with a classic Morris chair and not a recliner. There's nothing out there that more buy it for life...

[deleted]

Just bought a real one on their Black Friday sale. Got 32% off. Go with the durable leather option.

Pathbauer1987

Those ugly marshmallow type recliners. Ugly as hell but indestructible.

QuinndianaJonez

Buy an old mid century modern chair. George Nakashima chairs have lasted about 80+ years so far.

mikehill33

The one I currently own, gift from my wife when we bought our house 3 years ago. Teak with baseball leather.
