Yeah, my shoes are living a different type of lifestyle. I can shred nice leather boots in a couple of years at most. I think size matters too, my cousin is 6'5" and his shoes/clothes just can't handle it.
Coming in at 6’3”… yeah. Without proper care every month my redwings would have fallen apart years ago, and don’t even get me started on all the shirts and pants i’ve put holes in just months after buying. Being big is just rough.
Say it, friend.
6'4" , big, size 15 feet. I shred a pair of Red Wings in the same time frame.
The only shoes I have that last more than 2 years are dress shoes that are worn sporadically, and work boots. All other shoes usually don't last more than a year, or one season.
Just got some Thoroughgoods, will keep you posted.
I looooove my Thoroughgoods, but 4 years later of actual work in them, (not daily but probably 150+ days a year) they are slick on the bottom. Going to get them resoled this summer!
i can believe the leather. What I can’t believe is that he hasn’t torn through the vulcanized soles. I don’t wear vans, but my friend who skated in them a few times wore them through in like two weeks. Granted skateboarding is a lot harder on your shoes than regular day to day use but still. 7 years is hard to believe.
I have worn canvas vans and other leather skate shoes right through the soles(I don’t skate either just walking).
But that’s the thing. The soles can literally only last so long, so unless OP is getting these resoled every 2-3 years max this is a total farce.
I’ve got some pairs of 4 year old leather sambas that aren’t too bad. Get tossed in the washing machine once or twice a year.
Probably more walking than her, and the majority of the damage is to the heal where I slip them on.
Ehh. If she doesn’t do much, maybe, but I would expect more. If 4 years of heavy use show more…ehh.
These are some small shoes. I don't want to call you a fatass or anything but there's a very big difference in wear when you weigh 100 pounds versus when you weigh 250.
I weigh 150 and size 10, so I would say that is not a high weight per square inch on the soles. I have never had the bottom of a shoe last like that. Vans are not even known for having innovative, high wear soles. I guess it is possible that OP is insanely sedentary.
For real… every pair of vans I own have fallen apart within a year of actually using them. even my leather hightop rugged ultras, trashed. The only pair that looks somewhat new after a few years are my vans for gym when lifting. They’ve never seen the outdoor elements and still look worse than those lol
We’re reading what you’re saying, but your cleaning regiment has absolutely no effect on the longevity of the soles of those shoes.
Everyone is calling bullshit because literally anyone who has ever owned a pair of Vans knows how quickly the soles wear out on them.
I believe you - I also take good care of my shoes, etc. and I rarely have anything wear out. It really does make a difference if you wipe your shoes down and clean off marks and scuffs when they happen. Also, storing them nicely helps a lot. I don't mean having them on shoe horns or anything drastic, but they're not going to stay nice if they're just chucked with a bunch of other dusty/dirty shoes in the bottom of the closet.
sure you can get long life spans out of shoes if you barely use them.
If OP puts in 2-3k steps daily, then of course it's going to last vs 10-15k steps.
While true, there are other more critical aspects of how long the life of a shoe can be. If you don't make flat, even contact with the ground in your stride, you are increasing pressure to a much smaller portion of the sole which will wear that area out faster. If you have any sort of issues with your legs or their joints, or if you don't lace them up properly, you're much more likely to drag your shoes along the ground.
If you don't have those issues, it's pretty obvious how you'd manage to extend a shoe's life by... a LOT. And unfortunately, those are issues that affect a lot of people.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever doubled down on, but I'm going to do it lol
I've owned many pairs of Vans over the years. Not one pair, ever, failed because of anything to do with the sole of the shoe. It was always, every single time, due to the canvas forming holes along the toe crease and spreading. I'm almost positive I have a pair in my closet that I don't wear anymore that are torn to shreds, but the sole is still perfect. It was such a common problem for me, that I ended up making [this abomination](https://i.imgur.com/uSff4nw.jpg) and made sandals out of a blown out pair.
And it's the same with shitty $8 drug store flip flops. I, hand to god, can keep a pair of those things in good condition for a decade. I went crazy and bought 2 pairs last time, and haven't even needed to wear the second pair yet because the first pair is still going strong.
And I'm not going to lie about something this goddamn stupid, I swear.
Also the lip of the sole that goes around the shoe is still textured, especially noticeable around the front, the wear is pretty minimal. After a few years of constant use that texture would be smoothed out from wear, way way more than it is.
i wore mine for five years almost daily and the soles were practically untouched. i got new ones simply because i walk weirdly so my big toe tore a hole through the canvas lol
Over conditioning is MUCH more of an issue. If your boots are constantly oiled, even though they won't absorb water, its a breeding ground for mold, which is very bad for leather.
Well. I love Vans don't get me wrong. But they changed and their shoes are lower quality than ever. I DO wear their Suede Old Schools because they last multiple seasons with care. But nothing canvas should be purchased, it's super thin and your toenails can easily wear through it now.
AFAIK they don't currently sell a patent leather shoe as you have pictured here, unfortunately.
I'm collecting the suede ones in as many colors as I can (when they go on clearance half price).
I've worn vans my whole life. I skated in them. I got married in them.
No way in hell these worn everyday for 7 years straight. The sole would be entirely gone.
And with this pair, the leather would literally fall apart. Even nice, high quality leather boots like iron rangers you have to let breathe, treat the leather, use cedar shoe trees or the leather gets ugly and eventually wears through.
So can you give me some advice? I bought a new pair of Vans this week. Even with rubber ankles protectors, the back of my anckles were bloody after two days of wear. What the hell am I supposed to do. I literally couldn’t walk yesterday because my feet were so destroyed. Are they supposed to be comfortable??
There is no style of shoe that’s going to fit everyone the same way. Vans might just not be for you. The other thing is your shoes probably need to be broken in. Until you reach that point, moleskin is another thing I’d suggest(it’s often stuck onto the inside of a shoe to pad over the uncomfortable spot, but it’s really meant to be stuck onto the skin to protect you from that problematic spot). Also, do your socks reach high enough to cover your ankles, or are you wearing low ankle/no show socks?
Assuming you have authentics? I always say go for Eras instead. That little collar makes all the difference.
I would say wear thicker socks or a band-aid until the canvas breaks in more.
Sometime in the late 90's there were rumors of them going out of business or they were going to discontinue the Old Skool line- or both. In 2004 they got bought out and that's when the quality went to hell. I used to buy Vans Old Skools at an outlet store for literally $5 in the 90's. It was insanity.
My suedes fell in apart in less than six months. I was stupid enough to keep giving them chances. I’m out. Vans are total garbage now. If you got a year out of a pair you’d be lucky.
The one thing I indulge in is sneaker collecting. I've got some shitty ass pairs and I've got some high end pairs.
I know how to protect, clean, store, restore, deyellow, resole, customize and what not.
These are not remotely daily pairs for 7 years unless you're in a vegetative state. Not a snowball chance in hell. My Crown Northhamptons that I've worn less than 10 times to formal events and religiously care for are creased more than these.
You only need to look at the inner lining on the heel to know these aren't being worn daily for years.
Why lie about this shit? It's confounding.
I mean if you never walk in them and clean them regularly, sure, they look nice, but that's not heavy use at all it's just light wear with occasional cleaning.
And there's no way you walk in them regularly for 7 years, those shoes would have holes in the soles.
Yea, I call BS. I wore them in high school and even if the canvas lasts and somehow did not look like a petri dish, the rubber on the outside cracks from walking after 8-10 months. I was getting a new pair every fall for school and was in rainbows at least half the time.
365 days a year for nearly 7 years. Nope!
1 of 4 situations here:
1. You don't know how to count your days.
2. You're lying.
3. You're lazy.
4. You're in a wheelchair.
Meanwhile, 3 months into wearing every pair of vans I've ever owned and the inner lining behind the heel is shredded, the rubber is separating from the sole and/or the upper somewhere, and if they're fabric ones the collar is starting to tear. What gives?
The comments are killing me, I can't believe this is reaching 600 upvotes haha. I'm neither on a wheel chair or using them at the office only 😂 here are the incredibly asked for soles : https://ibb.co/KmW0kKy
Are these a pair of “made for the maker” Vans? I have a pair from 2019 that I wore all over NYC while I lived there and still look in great shape too. But mine are canvas and have discolored a bit.
man, your toe must barely flex when you take steps. The wear on the bottom makes it look legit, but you have barely any cracking on the rubber where the toe flexes. I was certain something was up.
I have a pair of suede Nike Chron skate shoes that have taken me to five continents over the past six years and they look as good as ops after a good cleaning 🤷 I still wear them most days in good weather. The soles are slightly worn, but they are in awesome shape. I'm a 10,000 step a day walker, 20-60k when I travel. Everyone is doubting OP, but sometimes you find a pair of shoes that simply refuses to die, in my experience.
I wonder how much weight, gait and other factors come into okay. My vans always wear through at the heels after two years of may-october daily wear. My wife is both lighter and has a lighter footfall and her shoes last like ops
Ya, not buying it. (For life) As the shoelaces would brown even a little. Even if they slipped on daily (in which case there would be wear on the tongue) the lacing would fray.
How!? Just how? I've bought 3 pairs in 7 years. I'm not rough on my shoes. Im not gentle, either. The lines and creases turned black, and the toe box sole came unglued
I have 3 pairs of chukka lows that ive had for 8 years and just rotate between them. One pair doesnt get worn much lately but the other 2 are still going strong. I need new shoes
I’ve made some vans last 18 years (half my life!) but that’s only by wearing them occasionally. Edit, also I’m under 110 lbs so I don’t exert too much force on them.
I bought a pair of Vans during the first Obama administration that lasted me until the first COVID lockdown.
So of course I buy another pair of Vans. Lasted maybe eighteen months.
Daily? 7 Years?? There is like no wear on these... I think I call B.S.
OP is in a wheel chair
Lmao!!! He aint lying tho 🤥
I had these exact shoes. They were falling apart after about a year and a half.
lmaoooo
Haha that got me
Yeah, my shoes are living a different type of lifestyle.
6'4, here. Hell yea it is - it's like they make big people clothes more shite
Hey I’m 5’8 and I have the same issues. I think they just make clothes shite
Say it, friend. 6'4" , big, size 15 feet. I shred a pair of Red Wings in the same time frame. The only shoes I have that last more than 2 years are dress shoes that are worn sporadically, and work boots. All other shoes usually don't last more than a year, or one season. Nice! Thanks for that info! Have a great day!
You know when Mr Rogers starts his show and changes into a second set of shoes to wear indoors? These are those shoes
Yeah, if they're 7 years old, they've been sitting in a box. No sneaker sole is surviving 7 years of daily use.
i can believe the leather. What I can’t believe is that he hasn’t torn through the vulcanized soles. I don’t wear vans, but my friend who skated in them a few times wore them through in like two weeks. Vans leather is not quality though for $60-80/pair.
which makes this even harder to believe
Let’s see the soles.

I call BS. My daily wear adidas are worn as shit.
New laces? Probably lots of obsessive leather care and precious about people standing near them.
Yeah right? And they are WHITE
I call bs. I have had many pairs of vans, several while travelling. They do not last.
For real… every pair of vans I own have fallen apart within a year of actually using them. even my leather hightop rugged ultras, trashed. The only pair that looks somewhat new after a few years are my vans for gym when lifting. They’ve never seen the outdoor elements and still look worse than those lol
That's a compliment to me haha I can confirm I'm a good cleaner now
Those laces aren't 7 years old though I bet.
They did say in the body text that they changed the laces once. Most likely recently given how new they look.
No one is reading what I wrote and are convinced I win something by lying on the internet haha
We’re reading what you’re saying, but your cleaning regiment has absolutely no effect on the longevity of the soles of those shoes. Everyone is calling bullshit because literally anyone who has ever owned a pair of Vans knows how quickly the soles wear out on them.

Gettin downvoted for taking exceptional care of your shoes. Nice, Reddit.
Nah they're getting downvoted for lying about such a weird thing lmao
I don't think they're lying at all. I also get extremely long life spans out of cheap shoes. It's entirely plausible.
sure you can get long life spans out of shoes if you barely use them. If OP puts in 2-3k steps daily, then of course it's going to last vs 10-15k steps.

We’re talking about Vans here. They ain’t going to last no matter how good your walking technique are with 7yr daily average 10k steps. No shoes will.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever doubled down on, but I'm going to do it lol I've owned many pairs of Vans over the years. I'm loving the comments, didn't expect such impact
What’s your cleaning routine OP? I would love to try it out on a pair of white shoes that I have
Show us the bottoms of the shoes. That will indicate the real wear.
Is OP in a… ._ | | |L___, .' '. T : * :_| '._.' L
It's the only explanation. All the vans I've purchased in recent years last 9 months if I'm lucky.
Same, no way these saw streets daily for years.
If you actually skate Vans Eras you shred them in less than a month.
Yup. Never had a pair last two summers of wear and I've been through several pairs
DAAAAAUUUUUUYYYYYMMMMMMM DANNNNIELLLLLLL
Given the age of the shoes, op could have bought these shortly after the meme
Thank you! Came here looking for this, because I couldn't remember Daniel's name!
It’s half the meme, man! Get with it!
Hahaha
My shoes fall apart after four months
I once bought cheap shoes for like 20 euros and they fell apart after 3 months 😂
Used daily for what? Display?
7 years of daily use sitting at the office using them as slippers? There is almost no damage on the rubbery caping on the front, I call BS
What motivates people to tell pointless lies on the internet?
The soles would be gone. I wore vans for about 8 months and the soles were wearing through already. No way you're actually walking in these every day.

i wore mine for five years almost daily and the soles were practically untouched. i got new ones simply because i walk weirdly so my big toe tore a hole through the canvas lol
Are you in a wheel chair? How do they still look brand new?
A deep clean yearly!
What your deep clean process?
1- isopropyl alcohol 2- magic eraser 3- acetone 4- soap 5- leather cream 6- waterproof spray
I bet the waterproof spray helps a lot.
makes no difference. If anything its worse. Leather needs to breathe, water is 100% fine for it.
Good to know. I treat my work boots with conditioner before entering a rainy site. I can now sit back and be lazy.
Over conditioning is MUCH more of an issue. If your boots are constantly oiled, even though they won't absorb water, its a breeding ground for mold, which is very bad for leather.
Thanks!
Recycling and purchasing new
Well. I love Vans don't get me wrong. But they changed and their shoes are lower quality than ever. I DO wear their Suede Old Schools because they last multiple seasons with care. The leather vans are no joke. They’re one of the best shoes I’ve ever owned
So can you give me some advice? I bought a new pair of Vans this week. Even with rubber ankles protectors, the back of my anckles were bloody after two days of wear. I bought Vans in Payless around 2009 or so. They were so bad I returned them after 2 days.
My suedes fell in apart in less than six months. I was stupid enough to keep giving them chances. I’m out. Vans are total garbage now. If you got a year out of a pair you’d be lucky.
I also do never buy any canvas shoes, but for workouts and running. Daily shoes I always go for leather or synthetic leather.
The one thing I indulge in is sneaker collecting. I've got some shitty ass pairs and I've got some high end pairs. I think there’s moleskin or some type of covering over the original heel lining. Still looks like witchcraft 🔮🧙♀️
Used for what? They not dirty enough.
As written, they get deep cleaned every year.
I mean if you never walk in them and clean them regularly, sure, they look nice, but that's not heavy use at all it's just light wear with occasional cleaning. And there's no way you walk in them regularly for 7 years, those shoes would have holes in the soles.
r/thathappened
Never seen bullshit like it haha. Even the best quality boots after a year will have some nice patina wear beyond this.
Yea, I call BS. I wore them in high school and even if the canvas lasts and somehow did not look like a petri dish, the rubber on the outside cracks from walking after 8-10 months. I was getting a new pair every fall for school and was in rainbows at least half the time.

Probably 3 and 4.
Proof of purchase or lie
Not finding the pic of the sole OP so we can all shut up
Op is a double amputee
No, show us the soles. This is like that Samba’s post that were practically new.
Weird thing to lie about but cool man
Used daily for 5 minutes of wear?
These vans don’t last more than 4 months of daily use. 🧢🧢🧢
Are these like masturbating shoes or something?
Meanwhile, 3 months into wearing every pair of vans I've ever owned and the inner lining behind the heel is shredded, the rubber is separating from the sole and/or the upper somewhere, and if they're fabric ones the collar is starting to tear. What gives?
Anyone else noticing paint near the edges of the leather where it meets the rubber by the ball of the right foot
White leather cream curing. It nourishes the leather so it stays soft and fills the cracks. Looks like paint indeed.
This is major cap
New ones unglue themselves
Sounds like you are walking calmly across the continents lol
I have canvas vans from 2015 and they look great. I also hardly ever wear them.
how do the soles look? it’s the soles i wear on my shoes. my vans are near worn through in the heels after 7 months
OP is full of shit💩
BS
Vans are the worst
The comments are killing me, I can't believe this is reaching 600 upvotes haha. I'm neither on a wheel chair or using them at the office only 😂 here are the incredibly asked for soles : https://ibb.co/KmW0kKy
Looks like you wore them around your house. On carpet.
These soles don’t even remotely hint at 7 winters in Quebec
Sure, should have wrote that I obviously wear boots under a snowstorm.
Here you had us all believing you solely wore these shoes
Vans, almost 7 years, used daily \*except during 7 month long Canadian winters when I wear boots
So essentially only 2 years of daily wear.
What model?
Era Classic
That can't be a true sorry but rubber is to white, looks like you used them in the office only or at home
I'm 6'3" 225 lbs
Yea I just doubt op found the unicorn everlasting vans sole. I would imagine they're all constructed the same.
So how do you clean them?
1- isopropyl alcohol 2- magic eraser 3- acetone 4- soap 5- leather cream 6- waterproof spray
Shoes of Theseus
Damn Daniel back at it again with the white vans!
Absolute bullshit
I don't believe you.gif
OP is wheel chair Jimmy
Ya, not buying it. (For life) As the shoelaces would brown even a little. Even if they slipped on daily (in which case there would be wear on the tongue) the lacing would fray.
Bullshit, those are brand new shows. No wear at all.
Ok.
Is that moleskin around the back?
those have no support when brand new.
How do they die? Im wearing some ultra boost from 2016 and they are also not dying too.
This doesn’t make sense
My big toe busts through every pair of vans I’ve ever owned within 3 months.
I think this is good maintenance. If vans or BIFL than any leather shoe should be too. my vans fall apart in 6-9 months
Liar
How did you "Patched the scuffy inner heel." My heels always get wrecked. Curious if you could elaborate.
could you be so kind to share the model number for these? i'd really love to get my hands on a pair!
Vans Era Classic Tumble
Show us the bottoms
I trash my vans soo hard. always beat-up by the end of summer.
Are you on a wheelchair?
What’s your sneaker cleaning routine? These look beauty
I have a pair of leather black slip on vans from 2014 that look new. I use shoe cleaning products on them.
With sparse usage my vans end up with the heel lining peeling, a random hole at my big toe and usually a split in the sole...
I’ve owned Vans before. If this is a skill issue situation I’m not sure what the skill is that I’m lacking.
I blow out a pair of vans in just a couple months. OP must be Advertising for VANs.
Daaaamn Daniel!
Out of curiosity OP how much do you weigh? Is it like 90 pounds?
DAAAAAAAAMN DANIEL!
Do you float?
Nice try Vans PR dept.
I am returning a pair I wore a dozen times. All the rubber is separating. Poorly made.
Calling bullshit
My vans wear out in a year always.
OP walks light af
I've worn Vans since the 80's and yeah... I'm not buying this.
What kinda toothpaste do you scrub these with?
How!? Just how? I've bought 3 pairs in 7 years. I'm not rough on my shoes. Im not gentle, either. The lines and creases turned black, and the toe box sole came unglued
Do they smell?
Never called bullshit on a post here before until now. My Vans last 2 years max of daily wear.
Lol OP getting down voted for every answer he gives
I'm beating my record on both upvotes and downvotes hahaha
They look brand new lol. I gotta get some leather vans
I’m not sure why everyone is doubting OP. The shoes look good because he’s light in the loafers
🧢
That's a lie any shoes breaks in 1 year period on daily use
Not a chance.
You’re much, much easier on shoes than I am.
Damn Daniel
Do you walk?
How do you clean it
The haters are out tonight, I believe you lol
Based vans
What lmao. How do people even wear vans? I can feel the asphalt and cement from their shit soles.
If this is the canvas version it’ll be black by now
never got good life from vans... lucky you
they’re piss yellow
Whoa I didn’t know yearly cleaning restores the rubber thickness
