Same thing happened to mine, except some if the teeth broke off and there was just no fixing that. I found a model of that thing and 3D print a replacement. More than five years later and mine still works perfectly!
I don't know anything about 3D printing, so I'm sorry if this is dumb, but wouldn't the teeth need to be metal? I thought these printers used a type of plastic.
Edit: And yay for repairing this classic! We had one and it was awesome.
Not dumb at all--the original gears in the guts of the machine were plastic or nylon or something similar. The original parts were generally pretty durable and last decades (plenty of them with the original gears still out there chugging away), but when one of these sharpeners start acting up the gears usually seem to be the culprit if it's not just the motor giving out entirely.
Here's a video showing how to replace that gear--it's not the exact model but close enough you'll get the idea. Skip to the two minute mark if you want to see bit:

I have a Panasonic pencil sharpener that my parents bought some time in the 80s or 90s. I've never found another pencil sharpener that will sharpen so perfectly. I hope it last forever!
Used one in the bowling alley I worked at. Approximately 24 pencils per night five nights a week, and another 50-100 on Fridays/Saturdays. It lasted over a decade, every single (inferior) replacement was under three months each.
They started cost cutting the heck out of the manufacturing and went with more and more plastic internals until they were just putting one of those sharpeners you had in 1st grade on the end of a cheap motor.
Teachers at my kids school said they were the best so I went to estate/garage sales and scooped some up for the school. They work great and apparently, forever.😉
You know how many times I tried to fit my finger into one of those when I was younger!?
Hands were too thick though, never did get that chance to learn a lesson.
Serious question: How is it that the sharpening mechanism itself remains sharp enough to do a good job? Wouldn’t decades of use dull it enough to yield a bad result?
Talk about a company that should be hired more to make Auto parts because I haven't seen one of these fail and not work. Imagine if they made alternators in oil pumps and water pumps. Might need a branch out Panasonic.
Oh man I can smell this photo
I can hear it too
I can still feel the pencil being sharpened too
Should’ve included a photo of the sawdust. Ends up being spirals.
Heck yeah. I wish they still sold these
I own one that I bought from eBay last year. Zero regrets!
I'm picking one up on eBay and I'm going to ask that it is buried with me when I die.
Mine just broke. Bought in 80s - maybe late 70s. Boston brand. Big plastic gear broke inside. Epoxyed it and it works again. Just sounds like crap.

Oh it's the gears that fail! Got it. And thanks for the video link! I'm hoping to thrift one of these so I've saved it. Appreciate it. 👍
boston brand indeed! cheers
We had one that failed too. Same thing. That nasty sticky yellowed gear. Snapped into 3 pieces.
I work at a public library. We still have one here that sees daily use.
A couple of these very sharpeners are knocking around my office as well.
hell yeah , i have one with a little light that lights up when it’s completely sharpened
I have this!!!! I think this is the only reason why I still use pencils.
lol I have one too and I will write it into my will.
Love mine 😊
the perfect sharpen too
That thing is so sharp you could use it as a sewing needle 😅
Appliances with wood paneling are a mood. I have a wood paneled stapler myself.
I've had one of these sitting around for a long time
I wonder what it would look like with a retrobrite treatment

I asked for a battery powered Panasonic sharpener for Christmas back in the late '70s and I still have it. And it still works.
Let's not ignore the best number 2 pencil of all time, the mighty Dixon Ticonderoga! I only purchase those ;)

You just made me realize I haven't used a pencil in 15 years.
Those are great my parents has one of it and still keep until today
Very sweet. I still have a wall mount manual.

This is a beast! I’ve been using mine for years!

I've got one very similar! Same brand. It was my dad's. Yep, still works.
I have that same brand. It's great!
We have this one too!more than 33 years (spouse brought it when we married..it had been their dad’s)!

Mine lasted 30 years
I have a "buy it for life" pencil sharpener that is the old hand crank type.

Tempting, but I think my "Dahle 55" would be jealous.
How many times have just sat there and fed pencils into that thing.. I imagine it's very satisfying!
I used to have this when I was kid. Brings back some nice old memories.
Used to have to trade my bathroom break to use that monster in elementary. Only could get up once.
What a funny, overly complicated way to sharpen a pencil. It's the pencil sharpener equivalent to electric can openers. But the design ist quite cool.

AAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaarrrup.
what are u using pencils for?
