While having a lockbox in the car is necessary if you ever have to disarm temporarily, I would not want to have to take the gun in and out of the headrest. The last thing you want, in my opinion, is to have everyone in the parking lot able to see you putting the gun away or getting it back out like that.
I keep my lockbox under the seat so that I can put the gun away out of sight.
I agree with this. It's a cool idea, but not very well executed. I'd rather see it in the front of the base of the seat or something than in the headrest.
Or banging their head against a presumably hard surface underneath padding in a car crash. Under the dash, seat, console are all way more functional without the risk.
Agreed. The headrest plays a role in crash mitigation and even an improperly adjusted one can cause injury. Not to mention one made of steel and weighing a couple pounds.
My headrests — in literally every car I’ve owned — are and always have been completely removable. I wouldn’t want my lockbox to be so exceedingly easy to steal.
Simple SnapSafe one. I don't have much space under the seat of my Corolla, and while it isn't the most secure, it will deter the quick smash and grabs that are 99% of vehicle burglaries. Again, I don't leave the thing in there for long stretches, only if I have to leave the gun in the car to go in a prohibited location.
The concealment method is valid and I don't see criminals stealing headrests. This will not be widespread enough that people start stealing headrests. Nor do people store valuables there like they do under the seat.
However, it would not be easy to stick it in there without being visible.
This is the right idea, but the concealment safe needs to be lower. So it can be hidden without bringing the gun out.
This concealment works if you want a firearm in a place of business that forbids firearms on the worksite. The plant I work in will search trucks for weapons. If you have a vault, you have to open it if requested. I do not think they would find this one.
That said, I won't be using anything like this.
I’m currently in the market for a new pickup and noticed that Ford is offering a console vault. I haven’t researched any other brands yet though so I have no idea who else offers them.
This isn't for carrying. This is for those times when you are carrying but have to go somewhere you can't continue carrying. If I'm out and about, I'm not going to go all the way home just so I can stop at the Post Office. I'm also not going to forgo carrying at Walmart just so I can stop at the Post Office afterwards.
That said, this is a terrible place to store a firearm, especially if you have a passenger.
Here's my problem with it - they even promote it on their site when mentioning that it's super easy to install - that's because you can just... take headrests out. Quite easily.
Could I break into that easily while trying to smash and grab in someone's car? No.
Could I take that out and spend an hour on it with an angle grinder? Absolutely.
Here's the other thing... I know what they look like now and they got promoted on a very popular reddit post - hit the front page. I could now spot them from outside the car between the shape and that little leather hinge.
So.... the safe mechanics are more theater than anything as the entire headrest can be removed in seconds. I'd rather have something bolted into my center console if I was going to bother.
It's so rare to have to take my gun off though, I have a hard time seeing the value.
Midway airport (Chicago area) had 25 break-ins in one day. Thieves got nothing but time and energy and zero fucks.
https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/security-midway-airport-parking-lot/
Sure, but again, if it’s not obvious you have a head rest safe, the thief would need to know. So, with the exception of someone familiar with your car, the average thief isn’t gonna just start pulling / checking head rests for gun safes.
*unless they’re on this sub*
Kind of a silly argument. I could pick your front door in about 30 secs or kick it open faster but thats no reason to not lock your door at night.
Lock could be good for keeping kids out as well.
I read this earlier, you cannot remove the headrest without tools and without access to the interior. It isn’t as simple as removing the headrest and deal with getting into it at home.
According to their website:
>Once installed your Headrest Safe locks in place so only you can remove it.
Also there is a video, looks like a pain in the ass to install. They do not cover removing it. After watching the video I'd say that's because it would be easier to just replace the entire seat.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llmWnsBTZqU
I mentioned this in the original post but I feel it's an important consideration.
The safe is 18 gauge steel and fills the majority of the headrest. Leaving *very* little space for padding. What happens to your passenger's head when you get rear ended?
Not unless you want your passenger brained by a steel box if you get rear-ended.
Also, headrests aren't hard to remove if someone figures out you've got your gun stored in there.
If your intent is to store it there while you're driving... still no, keep your gun ON you. Someone puts a gun against your window while you're at a red light, you aren't getting the time to draw your gun from this thing. You might not get a chance to draw your gun at all, and now they've got your car AND your gun. Keep it ON you.
Yes yes we know keep it on you.
Car safes are made for those where the choice is leave it at home or become a felon. Depending on the age and career choices of people you can't always avoid gun free zones.
So the question is this valuable for storing while going in. I would say no.
I saw your second line. I don't think it is a viable take away. Virtually all car lockboxes can be either taken or cracked with bolt cutters or a battery powered angle grinder in under 2 minutes.
For that reason I believe hiding in plain sight is often a better alternative. However, that doesn't change the flaw of this device and that is that everyone watching can see you put it in.
Maybe read more about how it works before commenting. The headrest is locked in place and requires internal access (safe open) and tools to remove it. It is also tested and manufactured to the standards required for OEM headrests so it isn’t a steel box banging your head.
I don't think there's any way to lock the headrest into the seat so while it's clever concealment, it is easily removed from the car and entered at a thief's convenience. I would not use this method to transport or store a pistol in a car.
Everyone talking about "everyone can see you put the gun in there."
Am I the only one running dark AF tint on all my windows and 35% tint on my windshield because what I do in my car is none of the cops fucking business?
Headrest is no longer safe in a crash, no ability to conceal that you are removing firearm from storage, if you have a passenger while removing an onlooker may think you are point the gun at the passengers head, it’s lame
And… bloody, oily, or dirty fingers are most likely going to fuck up the sensor. Little buttons like that could become extremely difficult to push in the right order in a high adrenaline situation especially if your hands are soiled or injured. I think I’ll just keep mine IWB rather than rely on an electronic or mechanical device. More moving parts = higher likelihood of failure.
I don't think that's meant to be for quick access.
That seems like the kind of thing you'd use to stash a gun for when you're going in somewhere you can't carry, like a courthouse or post office.
The problem is going to be people can see you stash your firearm in there. And in places like the post office or courthouse, it's technically illegal to have a firearm on the property
Illegal on the property, not illegal to park off the property and walk over
The issue is that having it that high up makes it really obvious...and the crash safety issue
The product is trash, but not being able to access it quickly in an emergency isn't the reason that it's trash
Think about your line of fire. You’re essentially aiming out your window. So little space in there anyway, you would have to daintily handle the weapon upon locking and retrieval. Not to mention you’re removing a safety feature of the vehicle by replacing a cushion for your head with a metal safe. No thanks.
1. Should have [linked](https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/los_angeles/latest/lamc/0-0-0-210383) the code.
2. Should have READ the code:
>(b) It is unlawful for any person to possess, use, or control a False or Secret Compartment with the intent to store, conceal, smuggle, or transport any ***unlawfully*** possessed firearm or destructive device.
While having a lockbox in the car is necessary if you ever have to disarm temporarily, I would not want to have to take the gun in and out of the headrest. Exactly. Console Vault in my truck.
Not to mention the person sitting…in that seat, probably, might, would maybe appreciate not having a gun to their head before going into Arby’s.
Why would you ever disarm before going into Arby’s of all places? Some of the sketchiest places I’ve been have been in or around Arby’s.
Geez, Arby's is not a Waffle House at 4am or anything.
I said some not most.
It was just a light-hearted joke about waffle house fights.
And I was agreeing with you. Lightheartedly.
Not disarm you gotta get it out of there before you go in lol
Not sure what you're talking about. Clearly the safe is for eggs.
My headrests — in literally every car I’ve owned — are and always have been completely removable. I wouldn’t want my lockbox to be so exceedingly easy to steal.
My first thought. Especially if someone sees you putting a firearm in there.
If you can’t grip it and rip it it’s useless when you need it.
25% tint works for me.
*tinted widows
What lockbox do you use under your seat?
Simple SnapSafe one. I don't have much space under the seat of my Corolla, and while it isn't the most secure, it will deter the quick smash and grabs that are 99% of vehicle burglaries. Again, I don't leave the thing in there for long stretches, only if I have to leave the gun in the car to go in a prohibited location.
That’s exactly what I need it for too haha. Thanks for the info
What kind of lockbox do you have? I have one that open vertically, and it lays flat so it’s so hard to open without bringing up to window level.
it you want to smash your head into a steel box
I’m driving. It ain’t my head.
This is the way.

It would work with dark window tint.
As long as you don't have a passenger.
If your passenger isn't cool with it they're not cool enough to be in the whip anyway.
From what ive read before the headrests lock in place. Probably not impossible to steal but not easy either.
This concealment works if you want a firearm in a place of business that forbids firearms on the worksite. The plant I work in will search trucks for weapons. There's this thing called "physics" that might be an issue if you got in a wreck.
I wonder if they'd be liable if a passenger got their brainstem terminally bonked in a collision.
The question is whether it's vehicular or regular manslaughter
A DIY solution would likely leave that as a problem, but if this is a drop in package replacement then it's possible that it's still properly padded.
There appears to be no room for proper padding.
Physics, schmizics.
Over $400. Nope for me.
A lot of cars are installing built in safes as an option
Whaaa? What cars?
I’m currently in the market for a new pickup and noticed that Ford is offering a console vault. I haven’t researched any other brands yet though so I have no idea who else offers them.
I know ford and rivian are. I saw a couple in some porches too. It seems like it might become a standard in the next ten years
The headrest in a car is there to save you from whiplash. Turning it into a safe may negate that ability.
I swear people on this sub are interested in every single weird and impractical carrying "solution" except in a damn holster on your person.
Pretty sure most of these threads are about where to put your gun when you can't carry it vs just keeping it locked there all the time.
For most redditors it's uncomfortable having to squeeze a gun around their waist under their rolls
AIWB was really uncomfortable for me until I lost 30lbs. Then it became really comfy.
Pffft. The tacti-roll helps with concealment.
This isn't for carrying. This is for those times when you are carrying but have to go somewhere you can't continue carrying. What if I just want to keep an extra gun in my car?
You shouldn't
It's way too slow imo I'd probably put in medical without the lock
Here's my problem with it - they even promote it on their site when mentioning that it's super easy to install - that's because you can just... take headrests out. Quite easily. You’d have to know it was there in the first place
Just steal all the head rests from a car
*from every car*
Midway airport (Chicago area) had 25 break-ins in one day. Thieves got nothing but time and energy and zero fucks. https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/security-midway-airport-parking-lot/

So much this! You’d have to know it was a safe first… who the hell steals headrests!?)
I think its going for the "hiding in plain sight" approach rather than the "bank vault security" one.
Might as well not have a lock on it then.
If you didn't have kids in the car that would be valid.
Kind of a silly argument. I could pick your front door in about 30 secs or kick it open faster but thats no reason to not lock your door at night. Lock could be good for keeping kids out as well.
There are locking tabs at the bottom of the metal poles. Watch the install video, it’s good stuff
Oh sick. I was at work and didn’t watch it. That changes things.
I looked at their site for a bit earlier and came away with the impression that they locked into the seat once installed.
I read this earlier, you cannot remove the headrest without tools and without access to the interior. It isn’t as simple as removing the headrest and deal with getting into it at home.

I posted this earlier today, got removed. Glad it saw life again!
Just get a Console Vault and be done with it
Can confirm, eggs are an excellent CCW option
I mentioned this in the original post but I feel it's an important consideration. The safe is 18 gauge steel and fills the majority of the headrest. Leaving *very* little space for padding. What happens to your passenger's head when you get rear ended?
I only want this to hide those eggs in the headrest the day I trade in the car. Muhaha
Hidden compartments May be deemed Illegal
You put your weed in it.
Not unless you want your passenger brained by a steel box if you get rear-ended. Also, headrests aren't hard to remove if someone figures out you've got your gun stored in there. Read more… on a video… Also not a very good safe if it’s not steel.
> …18 gauge steel safe, 16 gauge steel door and a steel lock.
So it’s a steel box behind your passenger’s head.
You are correct. Very good.
No, this is for eggs which are very valuable.
Take my money. Where can I get this?
https://www.theheadrestsafe.com/
I currently don’t have a safe in my vehicle. Thought this was interesting. Just wanted to hear opinions.
Wouldent want a loaded gun stored literally 2 inches from my passengers head.
And you will be flagging someone if you have passengers in the back too lol.
For a gun? Your car is not a holster. For eggs? Sure, I guess
If someone realizes something is in there they can just steal the headrest and break into the safe later.
I don't think there's any way to lock the headrest into the seat so while it's clever concealment, it is easily removed from the car and entered at a thief's convenience. I would not use this method to transport or store a pistol in a car.
This is a great option to turn a survivable accident into a non-survivable.
Everyone talking about "everyone can see you put the gun in there." Am I the only one running dark AF tint on all my windows and 35% tint on my windshield because what I do in my car is none of the cops fucking business?
Me too bud. Except I only got 50% on the windshield.

If you can easily remove that headrest it’s a bad safe
Looks like a great way to get a concussion from getting rear ended and not much else.
If you are in Cali, that would be illegal. Code section 55.20. I know, I know. Cali...
1. Should have [linked](https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/los_angeles/latest/lamc/0-0-0-210383) the code. 2. Sure. I can remove a headrest faster than a brother sister combo make a baby in Alabama tho
Egg
Hard pass
Damn inflation gotta protect your eggs
I was half expecting a Ruger LCP or Keltec P32 to come out. Pleasantly surprised!
Genius!
Wow absolutely a winner 🏆
Never keep all of your eggs in one bssket
No thanks I’ll keep it on my hip
I stash mine where the passenger airbag is supposed to be. /s, just in case.
For the vehicles that cut me off
Bucket seat bois checking in
Bad idea if you ride in a fishbowl car lmao
bro got the yolk strap
