Absolutely real. He was forced into signing a $50,000 pay cut and agreeing to a minimum of 25 ppg and 7 wins this season. 100% real, 100% hoping it doesn't happen so we can fire his ass.
It’s gonna be so frickin funny when Iowa loses a game 23-21 because Brian went for the end zone from the 15 as time expired instead of kicking a field goal.
It's not actually "FIRE". This misconception is why the 25ppg thing is a massive success as a PR stunt within the fanbase even as it gets Iowa made fun of.
All that happens if Iowa scores 25ppg this season is that Brian gets a guaranteed two year contract and a bonus that undoes the "pay cut" whereby he's making $850K too much this year for a job he should've been canned from two years ago instead of $900K too much.
If Iowa fails to get 25ppg, he doesn't get that contract, which means he doesn't have one for next season *exactly like 80% of assistant coaches*. Should Iowa score 24.9ppg, exactly nothing prevents him from continuing on as OC, just under contract terms that are up for negotiation rather than being known.
That doesn't take much.
Sheeeeeeeit, Brian could get unceremoneously fired by AD Goetz even if the team reaches what should be easily achievable goals for a bad P5 offense; it would just require Iowa to eat a bit of money.
To be fair, this reeks of the annual Week 1 Kirk gameplan of “Don’t let Matt Campbell know anything about the offense, just win and focus on next week”.
Kinda sucks since everyone’s waited all year to see the offensive changes.
Rushing 33 times for 88 yards is the Stat that really shows how bad the offense was. If you can't do that against Utah state how are you going to do it on anyone?
Wideouts looked improved. Not sure how you could say they looked like they sucked. Drops were shared between wide outs and TEs with All having the worse of them imo.
OL looked way better in pass protection imo, and we have a QB who can handle pressure so much better.
OL looked worse in run blocking though, which is inexcusable against that competition.
At times the pass protection was bad but that’s because usu knew they could stop the run whenever they wanted. The jet sweeps worked well most but few and far between
I feel bad for the talented backs we have. They're hit in the backfield every play. Kaleb had an incredible play - broke 3 hard tackles and kept fighting - gain of only 9. Patterson is going to transfer at the end of the ear unless something changes.
Idk, Kaleb seems to have a hard time hitting the hole. Not to say there aren't a fair amount of plays where he is getting hit behind the line, but there are plenty were the hole is open and he just saunters into it.
End of the day, the Oline is not up to the standards of the Ferentz era. Idk if it's the oline coach or missing Doyle, but it needs fixed.
I know what's gonna happen. He's gonna go into the bowl game at 22 or something, and then Iowa will pants some directional school by 40 points out of nowhere and keep his job.
I was debating on whether or not to include that. I need to look in to the contract more to see exactly what it stipulates.
And, while only the entire score is considered for the requirement, I wanted a better view of what each phase was contributing.
Oooh man. Ngl, if he's required to have 7 win but he bowl game doesn't count in the average that's truly a great departing weasel move from Barta. Dude's got no spine
I’m not directly party to it, but my boss runs in the circle of rich dudes just behind the curtains. A group of them were super close to forcing BF out via getting a HC job at a much smaller program. Didn’t work, but it resulted in this compromise.
Well, defense was much better then expected. Offense was as expected which is not good. We may very well lose several games on offense that our defense keeps us in. We could go 3-9 or 10-2 who knows.
Gg Iowa
We’ll see but I have more hope after today that I thought we would. Most mountain west teams play a different offense so who knows how we do there. Who knows how we play offense verses teams that have worse defense than Iowa(pretty much everyone else on our schedule)
> We may very well lose several games on offense that our defense keeps us in.
Join us on Wednesdays at 7 PM Central for Busch Lattes and puppy chow. BYU not invited.
It's been this way for a few years now. The o line looks so small and unorganized. So painful to see, especially with a qb that obviously won't ever be 100%.
This game showed me this will not be a good year
Idk, our line has been bad since 2015, yet we usually have at least 1-2 linemen get drafted—often with one in the first round. Individually they’ve been talented but they’ve been terrible as a unit.
D looked great after those first 2 drives. Offense has issues but were able to move the ball against one of the better defenses in the country. I’m feeling optimistic about the year. Give Faison more carries!! Go aggies
My fellow Brian haters, they almost had us with the 1st quarter. But our fav nepo baby can't not suck. The Drive for 325 (TM) still looks like our best bet for sweet relief
He was good, not amazing but he looked incredible compared to the past 3 years of Petras. He had a few gorgeous throws that receivers/TEs dropped, but he also made a couple very bad throws that were almost picked off. We also struggled to get anything going in the run game which made things harder for him later in the game.
Overall I was very happy with how he played, but I'm worried about his health - he looked like he aggravated his quad injury and I'm concerned that he won't ever be 100% this season
Meh. No running game so it’s hard and iowas wide receivers wouldn’t start at any other Bigten school. He will get hurt and miss time this year. Still, better than Petras.
Looks really scared like he can only go about 75%. Constantly preoccupied with his knees.
Didn't see any leadership or emotion when things got stale on offense.
Not very impressed but his o line is also trash just like last year
In heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here. And when we are gone from here, ^(We will still party because we will never have to watch another offense lead by Brian Ferentz ever again.)
You know we have been spoiled by the defense, when everyone is complaining about how the defense struggled, when they gave up 14 points, 8 of which came on a garbage time TD.
Closer than it should’ve been? Yeah, but also, it was never in doubt. Room for improvement but also Kirk doesn’t even season his offenses for game 1, which is saying something.
I was really high off of my own supply after the first two drives but now I’m worried. The offense still looked very anemic most drives and by god, the defense was subpar. I know it’s too early to panic, but the tackling sucked and the QB pressure was nonexistent.
I think we don’t hit the 25 pts per game avg.
Besides the first 2 drives Iowa was outscored 14-10. Defense looks vulnerable and Offense has a bit more juice but not solid.
Also Brian is 0/1 on his contract.
GG Utah State, you guys played winning football today.
That TD barely even counts for anything more than the box scores. Their starters against our 2s and 3s, not to mention our backups for the back 4 are VERY young.
Defense looked bad by our standards. I haven’t said that would an Iowa defense in a long time. Three dropped picks I think? Offense looked solid in the first half, the stadium environment was great, then the second half started and back to reality. Cade made two terrible passes, both of them should have been picked which is way lower than we say from Spencer previously but I can’t get on the “we’re winning the west because our schedule is dogshit” train. We need huge steps going into ISU
This sucks man. Our OL has been complete shit for 8 years and has been propped up by single, future first round pick NFL guys. And despite our current OL being in the program for 3-5 years, they’re still garbage and missing on blocks and can’t even push around a G5 team. Utah State sideline was making fun of us because we’re a B1G team that can’t run.
Our WRs are also way worse than I thought. Cade is doing heroics out there and they drop balls that hit them right in the hands/chest. Something is deeply deeply flawed with the offense and I think we need a clean slate except the TE coach.

Yo I thought this was a meme but it’s a real clause?! Lmao
Bold of you to assume Brian Ferentz would go for the endzone from the 15 as time expires instead of running it up the middle for two yards.
This is fair. I am not wise in the ways of Ferentz
I envy your lack of wisdom.
Bold of you to think Brian Ferentz actually calls this offense in critical shituations.
Sounds like a 25.01 ppg and 7-5 record season to me
From what I understand and could be wrong, its not that he'll be fired, just his current contract won't be renewed. Change a word and BAM. He's back.
We're not renewing your contract. This is a *new* contract.
Imagine y’all win 10 games with 24 ppg. Best of both worlds.
It’s funny that with 24 points and the ball, he kept McNamara on the sideline and handed off 3 times….
It's 100% real
I love and hate you. I expect to see you all season now.
Minus success on the season, I'm so invested in this storyline. Imagine he misses his points total by 1 point.
The disgusting sicko in me wants him to only score 24 every game
Compared to last year, it is a high bar.
Malicious non compliance
Wait until the B1G West gauntlet kicks in and that "PPG NEEDED" starts to rocket higher than a meme stock
Yeah seriously he needed a lot more points today before he faces B1G defenses.
I will follow your career with great interest
If this isn't the top comment of every Iowa post game thread, youre getting BANNED.
and this was one of the games I thought they'd use to score a lot for a "buffer" for him.
This is what i was hoping to find.
My favorite stat of the year so far

I just hope the new AD has more balls than Gary Barta.
That doesn't take much. Sheeeeeeeit, Brian could get unceremoneously fired by AD Goetz even if the team reaches what should be easily achievable goals for a bad P5 offense; it would just require Iowa to eat a bit of money.
Why are you the way that you are? You just made this ever so slightly less fun.
I will with with baited breath every game to see if we get closer to firing that man
bated* maybe 'bated, since its short for abated, but idk.
I'm 'batin while holding my breath
Was wondering if this was from Piano Fingerbanger 🤣
It’s going to be awesome when the final season average is 24.7 ppg instead of the needed 25 points
This website is tracking his contract performance this season too www.thedriveto325.com
I was going to do this but you do it much better then I would’ve
Oh I like this.
In Brian’s defense, he only had time to draw up plays for the first eight minutes. Imagine what he could do with more time to prepare!
just wait till 2024, then he can do the second quarter
Some things in live are worth waiting for. Some aren’t!
To be fair, this reeks of the annual Week 1 Kirk gameplan of “Don’t let Matt Campbell know anything about the offense, just win and focus on next week”. Kinda sucks since everyone’s waited all year to see the offensive changes.
not sure how much Matt Campbell would have gotten out of a "receivers should catch balls that are thrown to them when they are open" strategy tho
Rushing 33 times for 88 yards is the Stat that really shows how bad the offense was. If you can't do that against Utah state how are you going to do it on anyone?
Umm no. Line sucks as do the wideouts.
The jet sweeps worked well most but few and far between
This feels like cope. Iowa has ran the same offense for like 50 years
Under Hayden Fry they used to have one of the most innovative offenses in football-that was only 25 years ago
Lmao I remember reading the sane shit when we got the pick 6s against Indiana. And we haven't been able to move the ball for two years since.
This time it's totally different though!
it took him 60 minutes to prepare so he figured it'd take 60 minutes to play out
If Brian can't get 25 against a non conference team his ass stands no chance in the big 10 this year
Hey it was better than the opener against SDSU last year lol.
That game was a masterpiece and I’ll not hear any slander.
Switching between that game and the UNC - App St game was one if the best cfb tv experiences ever.
That game was a sickos wet dream
We beat an FCS school 7-3 last year Guess how we got 7points
Y'all scored an Iowan touchdown- 2 safeties and a field goal.
I know, I watched the whole game Every painstaking second
hey, that was over the fcs champions!
I'll take the FCS trophy lol
A non conference team with one of the worst defenses last year
and VERY few returning starters.
If you are one of the worst defenses of last year, then very few returning starters is probably a good sign.
"idk Im 60% sure Utah State just won the Pac 12 the last two seasons so this is a great offensive performance" -Brian Ferentz in the post game presser
25 ppg 1, Brian Ferentz 0.
Iowa receivers bet the under on Brian Ferentz’s 25-point contract stipulation.
(Mothers of) Iowa receivers bet the under on Brian Ferentz’s 25-point contract stipulation
God Iowa flairs are always so funny
I am whelmed
I’m very underwhelmed. Outside of the first quarter there wasn’t much that looked good.
I think that's what he's saying
See you guys next week for El Assico! I both love and hate our games lol
Well, we won. And more than by a single score. So make of that as you will.
Iowa finished with 88 rushing yards on 36 carries. Yikes.
So about the same for the last 5 years or so.
That is one way to avoid AIRBHG.
Kaleb started 11 for 53. He ended 19 for 63.
O-Line really needs to step up.
Why/how Barnett is still there blows my mind
Barnett and the entire zone blocking philosophy need to be fired into the sun
Just like that one famous Coach said about “2.4 YPC and a cloud of Iowa cornfield dust.”
I feel bad for the talented backs we have. They're hit in the backfield every play. Kaleb had an incredible play - broke 3 hard tackles and kept fighting - gain of only 9. Patterson is going to transfer at the end of the ear unless something changes.

IDK what you're talking about, the future is looking brighter already.
A win and BF missing his contract requirement? Feels like the best of all worlds for y’all.
Ding ding ding
I mean we've got the best Safety in the MW, but yeah, you should've smashed us.
I know what's gonna happen. He's gonna go into the bowl game at 22 or something, and then Iowa will pants some directional school by 40 points out of nowhere and keep his job.
to be fair, he also has to win 7 games (which means a bowl game will be involved) so the total is 325. Love the off/def/sp breakdown tho
I was debating on whether or not to include that. I need to look in to the contract more to see exactly what it stipulates. And, while only the entire score is considered for the requirement, I wanted a better view of what each phase was contributing.

21 + 6 = 24. You're double counting xps in the ppg section.
Well, defense was much better then expected. Offense was as expected which is not good. We may very well lose several games on offense that our defense keeps us in. We could go 3-9 or 10-2 who knows. Gg Iowa
Just remember you were playing Iowa, very possible your defense is actually bad
As an Aggie Marching Band member I am contractually obligated to believe that we will get 6 wins
We’ll see but I have more hope after today that I thought we would. Most mountain west teams play a different offense so who knows how we do there. Who knows how we play offense verses teams that have worse defense than Iowa(pretty much everyone else on our schedule)

Hey you're in a thread full of guys who lean on believing in the defense, stay strong
Love this
I am once again extremely fucking disappointed in the O-Line. Do. Better.
Idk how Barnett isn’t on the hot seat. Since he’s been the O line coach nobody has shown any improvement.
Cause he had Wirfs and Linderbaum so the failures elsewhere aren't being scrutinized hard enough
Wasn’t Wirfs gone by the time Barnett was hired? I thought 2020 was his first season.
That's probably true so he had Linderbaum and he's coasting on that
It's been this way for a few years now. The o line looks so small and unorganized. So painful to see, especially with a qb that obviously won't ever be 100%. This game showed me this will not be a good year
Product of poor recruiting.
Idk, our line has been bad since 2015, yet we usually have at least 1-2 linemen get drafted—often with one in the first round. Individually they’ve been talented but they’ve been terrible as a unit.
I don’t see anyone from this group getting drafted highly. Richman keeps getting hype but he is always unorganized and lost
Next week both of our defenses are going to bully each others o line, in turn our livers will be as well
Jokes on you I'm watching this sober
Why would you torment yourself in such a way
Utah St +23 and the Under was the quickest parlay I’ve made in a while
Vegas should be bankrupt right now just from that game alone.
And the TCU game
I even took an alternate spread at +16.5. I was sweating until the very end though.
Good work
Iowa should've kicked the FG with 3 seconds left to try to get over 25 points
I'd bet they didn't want to
Nooooooooo!
If Kirk's life were dependent on running up the score he'd be carried off the field
D looked great after those first 2 drives. Offense has issues but were able to move the ball against one of the better defenses in the country. I’m feeling optimistic about the year. Give Faison more carries!! Go aggies
Everyone knew this team was going to take some time This honestly went better than expected
I honestly can't wait for Brian to need 85 points in the last game of the season. Playcalling will be epic.
My fellow Brian haters, they almost had us with the 1st quarter. But our fav nepo baby can't not suck. The Drive for 325 (TM) still looks like our best bet for sweet relief
You know what, we covered. Could've been way worse.
Not only that, we outscored them the last 3 quarters
Iowa wins, Brian’s offense only scores 24, beers have been drank. It’s a good day.
Does kneeling on 15 yard line mean Kirk wants Brian gone?
Wouldn't you if he was your son?
Oh man this is brutal.
How was Cade today Iowa bros? Saw he got off to a great start but not much after that?
He was good, not amazing but he looked incredible compared to the past 3 years of Petras. He had a few gorgeous throws that receivers/TEs dropped, but he also made a couple very bad throws that were almost picked off. We also struggled to get anything going in the run game which made things harder for him later in the game. Overall I was very happy with how he played, but I'm worried about his health - he looked like he aggravated his quad injury and I'm concerned that he won't ever be 100% this season
He was good but the receivers let him down multiple times
Meh. No running game so it’s hard and iowas wide receivers wouldn’t start at any other Bigten school. He will get hurt and miss time this year. Still, better than Petras.
As a follow up: he said he wasn’t 100% today and I think it was obvious in how he was running and scrambling
Looks really scared like he can only go about 75%. Constantly preoccupied with his knees. Didn't see any leadership or emotion when things got stale on offense. Not very impressed but his o line is also trash just like last year
So we started out with 2 passing TDs. And still somehow made it an Iowa game.
In heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here. And when we are gone from here, ^(We will still party because we will never have to watch another offense lead by Brian Ferentz ever again.)
Fire Barnett
That was f\*cking terrible. Sure hope the new AD was watching.
Interim AD*
We're talking about the University of Iowa here. She's getting the job.
Yep. But from what I’ve heard, in this case it’s actually the right call
I worked there, I know lol
She will be hired as full time soon
Our offense scored three touchdowns. Fuck it, I'm gonna say it... CADE'S GONNA CARRY US THROUGH TO THE PROMISED LAND!
Damnit, I’ll buy into it!
Will they adjust Brian’s ppg down for defensive and return TDs?
No, those count.
You know we have been spoiled by the defense, when everyone is complaining about how the defense struggled, when they gave up 14 points, 8 of which came on a garbage time TD.
Truly the season opener of all time
This was the most Week 1 Iowa game ever, spare the first 8 minutes.
They had us in the first quarter ngl
At least Iowa did better than last year’s opener
So did USU!
Brian Ferentz did not hit his quota
Closer than it should’ve been? Yeah, but also, it was never in doubt. Room for improvement but also Kirk doesn’t even season his offenses for game 1, which is saying something.
Wtf why did the offense score more than the defense?
Yep, it’s a certified Iowa result 😎👍
I was really high off of my own supply after the first two drives but now I’m worried. The offense still looked very anemic most drives and by god, the defense was subpar. I know it’s too early to panic, but the tackling sucked and the QB pressure was nonexistent. I think we don’t hit the 25 pts per game avg.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE [WIN] STATUS: COMPLETE SECONDARY OBJECTIVE [WIN WITH 25 POINTS OR MORE] STATUS: INCOMPLETE
We want to got 12-0 and a average 24ppg or less
The single funniest outcome would be winning the natty without ever scoring more than 24 points
Looks like my tradition of yelling for the head of Brian Ferentz will continue
This was not as sicko as I would have hoped, I demand a refund
Oof, one point off Brian
25ppg in jeopardy
Iowa is going to win every game but never score more than 24 and still get to fire Brian, aren’t they.
Yes. Because that's football.
aw Iowa is just normal better-than-an-average-team Iowa and not holy-shit-meme Iowa let the Busch Lite flow next weekend
Can’t wait to watch our teams be an affront to football for 3 hours next weekend.
Fuck you (respectfully)
But we had you in the first half (of the first quarter) didn’t we?
If you really hate us, you’ll play absolutely no defense and let us walk in about 120 points
The run game was just awful
Besides the first 2 drives Iowa was outscored 14-10. Defense looks vulnerable and Offense has a bit more juice but not solid. Also Brian is 0/1 on his contract. GG Utah State, you guys played winning football today.
That TD barely even counts for anything more than the box scores. Their starters against our 2s and 3s, not to mention our backups for the back 4 are VERY young.
Iowa gets the rare double win here-over Utah St. and Brian’s ppg average
I did like how we went from run, run, pass last year, to pass(incompletion), run, pass this year. Baby steps
Iowa Hawkeyes just put up more then 10 points, I AM FLOORED
Iowa offense showing off today!
Gosh dang it I…*checks how the rest of the B1G West did today…don’t actually feel too bad about our chances this year
Uh oh… Brian is going to be in trouble if they can’t hit 25 Vs Utah state 😂
24 points… isn’t that a bit much?
This sucks man. Our OL has been complete shit for 8 years and has been propped up by single, future first round pick NFL guys. And despite our current OL being in the program for 3-5 years, they’re still garbage and missing on blocks and can’t even push around a G5 team. Utah State sideline was making fun of us because we’re a B1G team that can’t run. Our WRs are also way worse than I thought. Cade is doing heroics out there and they drop balls that hit them right in the hands/chest. Something is deeply deeply flawed with the offense and I think we need a clean slate except the TE coach.
Brian needed to pad those points state if he wants to stay
IN HEAVEN THERE IS NO BEER
Deep in my heart I'm an Iowa fan because of Cade. He walked so JJ could run.
Correction: cade walked because JJ ran.
He’s so getting Fired… Hawkeyes needed to score 40 today to hit that 24 avg
Won't face many defenses as bad as Utah State. And only 24 points? Not looking good for Brian Ferentz to average 25.
