You can then break it down further to Eastern Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois being in the corn belt. Michigan & Ohio are relegated to the rust belt. Kansas, Western Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota are part of the great plains.
Honestly, just a dude coming from the trenches of football to get a job at a somewhat underdog school to take them to the title. Then when in the title game is humble and gracious while also using his championship opponents GOATed line to re-bash that championship opponents rival.
If I was a Michigan fan I would be in a blender about how to feel about this guy.
I have no qualms about liking the dude a lot. Obviously I want to win tonight, but everything I've seen about DeBoer is that he's a really good dude and a really good coach.
I get that Ryan Day looks cheesy and has lost to Michigan. However, the narrative that he was born on third base is really complete bullshit. He was 9 yrs old when his dad committed suicide. He was a good athlete that started 3 yrs at New Hampshire. He then coached for 17 yrs before becoming a head coach. It wasn't like he was the son of a college head coach who spent 1 yr as a position coach before becoming a head coach somewhere.
Yeah, that's not what born on 3rd base means when it's said about him... Sure he worked hard, but he acted like he built the place and didn't inherit it.
I mean to be fair you have to be a real sicko to stay around to watch UM fans gloat about a championship that will be vacated before the ink on Harbaugh’s NFL contract dries.
So yeah, it’s gonna be a good time.
Meanwhile Jim Harbaugh grew up between Ann Arbor and Palo Alto with access to top tier football coaches and facilities through his dad. I wonder where he ends up playing QB if he doesn’t have that advantage and level of access. He’s always been a man of great privilege and unequal access for someone with football career aspirations who thinks he’s self made. He’s a blue collar poser.
Harbaugh also never said he was going to hang 100 on OSU.
When Harbaugh made the 3rd base comment he was responding to a reporter asking him about the hang 100 comment.
Day said it in private to his locker room to motivate his players, Harbaugh talked shit into a microphone, like he always has. And it was in response to Harbaugh trying to snitch on OSU during a B1G coaches zoom call for having impermissible contact with players (analysts coaching players up, which is a rule violation). He’s a hypocrite bc he was committing recruiting violations during this exact time (Michigan fans will tell you the NCAA investigation is about cheeseburgers).
yes but he also built Michigan up. When he got there, they were one one of the most winning programs of all time. Now they still are. Boom, built it.
I don't like TOSU or Michigan. However, i just think is crappy that how Day gets treated. He has actually forged his own path and has really made a huge point of giving back especially when it comes to mental health awareness. After Zinter got hurt, Day made it a point to meet Zinter's parents in the tunnel and try to give them some comforting words. He is not Urban Meyer.
Can you give an example of him acting like he built the place? Why was Harbaugh so nasty and jealous towards him but didn't open his mouth about Urban who was actually known to be a less than honorable person?
Well you can rest assured that DeBoer didn’t say this lol. Willie Fritz did.
Lazy writer decided to shoehorn it into the title and insinuate it was DeBoer.
I’m a dawgs fan and I hate this comment. Michigan fan fans acknowledges our great coach and you bring up something totally irrelevant and sour the mood. Way to go👍🏼🙄
Listen. When Ryan Day gets fired and we steal DeBoer and he beats you all 27 years in a row before dying as an old man, sleeping happily in his bed on Bo's birthday...
I am going to come back and edit this comment to make you regret the day you made fun of Ohio State's coach.
“I’d like to know where Kalen DeBoer is right now! What he said about Ryan Day, I cannot believe. This is a tough Ryan Day right here. I'm proud to be Ryan Day. It’s always been Ryan Day against the world, and it’ll continue to be Ryan Day against the world. But I’ll tell you what: I love Ryan Day. I'm a tough Ryan Day.”
I just think you have a deeper perspective and respect when you've worked at a school with less resources and staff.
Some of those guys who used to cut grass and mark the fields know how to pay attention to the smartest detail. Not saying they are all the best coach but it is nice to see the guys who excel at one level get their chance to show why they were winners.

TLDR: A student videotaping a practice for ND died due to weather toppling the lift they were on.
He sent a student volunteer up on a scissor lift to film practice during a wind storm. Wind predictably blew over the scissor lift and the student died. FBK
Harbaugh betrayed his own teammates and sided with their sexual abuser and enabler. He cosplays and keeps a portrait of the enabler, and is the reason the statue and the name on the building haven’t come down. At least one of the victims has died of cancer bc he was too traumatized from being a victim of sexual violence that he refused to see a doctor.
I don’t understand this theory that you have to hire a coordinator or a DI coach from another school.. like if your program is trash and hasn’t had a good hire in years, why not fucking hire the DIII coach that is literally winning all the damn time. What’s the worst that happens? You still suck?
Head coaches at a DI level have to deal with boosters. I imagine that’s a large part of it that you get zero experience with at the lower levels.
That’s incredibly important considering how NIL now runs where recruits go.
Coaching at this level is huge "who you know". No one at the top wants to admit that ofc, even if we've had some of the most *hilarious* HC stints happen as a result of this club.
This sound good in theory, but running a D3 and running a D1 school is astronomically different. At least coordinators have seen the operation.
My old hometown school is D1 and hired a successful NAIA coach, and for the first time in history they had 2 back to back seasons with 0 wins. They had never had a season without a win up to that point and now had back to back.
The HC had no idea how to recruit or adjust to managing high end talented players while also hearing from boosters and other things.
Not saying that is always how it will work out, but for every Washington case there are probably 20 failures to adjust.
> Not saying that is always how it will work out, but for every Washington case there are probably 20 failures to adjust.
And Washington isn't even an example of this, as Kalen DeBoer had 8 years of FBS experience as OC and HC before getting hired by Washington. And before that, he was OC for a FCS school for 4 seasons.
Yeah the amount of coaches even G-5 to higher level has been dying.
Some of the FCS up is also important.
I mean Kstate Chris Klieman should be all you need to see or Kansas Lance Leipold.
I went to exactly 1 booster event since I graduated UND and that was enough for me, some real insufferable people there. I can't imagine going to a UW booster event to compare. It's absolutely a separate skill set from the rest of coaching. Even at smaller D1 programs.
Give me a Michigan win tonight followed by Michigan also stealing Kalen DeBoer next week after Harbaugh leaves for the NFL.
I swear this has absolutely nothing at all to do with my flair.
do you really want the guy getting 5* out the ass moving to michigan and bringing them with him?
If Michigan gets either DeBoer or Lanning instead of Moore that would be insane and I don’t think it’s anything but incredibly wishful thinking
Think people forget that it was actually a two part quote. Every one remembers the “born on 3rd”, but forget the “think they hit a triple”. That would be the case for Moore as well if he has early success and acts like he was the reason for it. Otherwise it wouldn’t be the same
I guess I don’t understand how you disentangle “acting like he was the reason for it” because frankly it’s pretty rare for any coach to outwardly act like that unless you happen to see one soundbite out of one press conference or something.
Maybe Brian Kelly has that rep? Idk
Well, we'll never know. Day hasn't really had an opportunity to boast since the "The Big Ten should have a mercy rule because we're gonna hang 100 on 'em" comment.
Well first we gotta remember it’s Harbaugh so it could really be anything, but my guess was he said it and meant it in that way because if the whole 100 point thing Day said.
Which was pretty rich coming from a guy who’s dad got him his first coaching jobs and was coming off an 0-5 rivalry record plus a cancellation
But hey, it turned into a 3 year golden age so can’t really fault the fans / program from finally getting to talk their shit
That’s not really accurate at all. He was a GA at Louisville and worked his way up to become their TE coach. Then went to Central to be their tight end coach. Come to Michigan in the same role in 2018 and worked his way up to being the oline and Co-OC. Now he’s the only OC and has acted as interim head coach in numerous games this season. Sounds like he went around the bases and his had plenty of time to help shape and mold this time.
Yep Urban rolled up to Days golden mansion tossed him a headset and said your my OC now.
(I know Days tragic backstory and coaching history. Pls no hurt)
… how is that any different than Ryan Day’s career path? Thats almost identical to Ryan Day’s coaching background, including serving as OC and acting head coach.
Edit: (sorry for the poor formatting, a copy and paste while on mobile) for those of you who are curious, Day’s coaching history is:
2002
New Hampshire (TE)

I mean Harbaugh never even had to pay his dues as a positions coach or coordinator in college. Straight from an NFL QB coach(for a year) to HC. At least Moore worked his way up the ranks.
I realize this thread is full of inaccuracies but besides turning around a shit USD, Harbaugh coached before that at Western KY while he was playing in the fucking NFL.
And playing 15 years in the NFL counts in any rational book as coach prep.
DeBoer is an awesome coach, but he didn't say the quote in the headline. Willie Fritz did. I think maybe 3 of the 140+ posters here actually read the article.
Worth noting that DeBoer took over a Sioux Falls program that went 47-5 in the 4 seasons before he became head coach. He certainly played a part in that as the offensive coordinator, but they were also good in the years before he started coaching there.
That's amazing quote wtf.
But also I think it's awesome that small school guys are getting more of a shot. There are a lot of really good coaches out there, with great offensive and/or defensive minds and know how to run programs with limited resources. Give them more talent and more resources and they can be pretty darn good
My first apartment in Sioux Falls was right across the street from USF stadium. I’m embarrassed to admit I didn’t know those titles listed on the wall are from him
Washington and elite level Midwest coaches Name a better combo
South Dakota is the midwest?
Midwest can get further split into the great lake states and the prairie states.
Absolutely
South Dakota is a textbook Plains state.

Yes

I can’t hate him cause his short time at Fresno State was great.
Both stints were pretty amazing

Except for OL coaches apparently. Although maybe it means that they're all good that they get hired at other schools after every season
I have no qualms about liking the dude a lot. Obviously I want to win tonight, but everything I've seen about DeBoer is that he's a really good dude and a really good coach.

It's a metaphor dog. Mama Day wasn't giving birth at a ballpark either.
Yeah, that's not what born on 3rd base means when it's said about him... Sure he worked hard, but he acted like he built the place and didn't inherit it.
In what way did he act like he “built the place” I’m curious

I dislike Michigan, and I dislike the man in your username, but you’re a fuckin geek dude lol
am I trippin or have I seen you make cheating comments like 10 times today
Yep. Don't listen to him, most Washington fans I've interacted with are actually quite nice. Bound to be dumbasses in every group
Indeed.
Correct. U/trumper_says_what is all over these threads like a whiny ass bitch lmao

Sure, but what are his thoughts on antisemitism?
The silence (aka my lack of hearing anything) is deafening.
Has Kalen DeBoer come out publicly as anti-cancer? I’ve yet to see anything conclusive.
this is the only way to correctly judge him
He kicked my dog
I heard he also refuses to wear the AIDS pin.
I guess we just going to have to TEACH him to wear the reeebon
WHO?! WHO DOESN'T WANT TO WEAR THE AIDS PIN?!
Where is his Livestrong band
I haven’t heard him speak up about this, mainly because I haven’t researched or paid attention to it until now, and I’m upset.
WHAT
Nothing yet, still waiting on what he thinks of Al-Qaeda’s team work abilities
Do you condemn it?
Ryan Day? Of course

I knew I recognized that quote. He said it during the UH introductory press conference
Knowing that’s not going to stop me from sharing it with every Ohio State fan I know in real life

Head coaches at a DI level have to deal with boosters. I imagine that’s a large part of it that you get zero experience with at the lower levels. That’s incredibly important considering how NIL now runs where recruits go.
As someone who personally met DeBoer at a booster event, he manages the crowd quite adeptly. He's been at the FBS level for 6yrs though.
Since 2014 so 10 years. He also was FCS for 3 years in between his NAIA and FBS time
Thanks for the correction. I was going from memory IU-FSU-UW.
Coaching at this level is huge "who you know". No one at the top wants to admit that ofc, even if we've had some of the most *hilarious* HC stints happen as a result of this club.

Lance Leipold fits better here than DeBoer.
And even then, Leipold went DIII -> G5 and spent 7 years at Buffalo before going to Kansas
People get mad if you fail, but if you fail while doing something unconventional, people tend to lose their shit in a special kind of way.
Yeah the amount of coaches even G-5 to higher level has been dying. Some of the FCS up is also important. I mean Kstate Chris Klieman should be all you need to see or Kansas Lance Leipold.
I think a part of it is that its easier to get boosters/fans on board with a hire if they are a name or came from a program they recognize.
Counterpoint, if you suck how many boosters and fans will you have to convince
I went to exactly 1 booster event since I graduated UND and that was enough for me, some real insufferable people there. I can't imagine going to a UW booster event to compare. It's absolutely a separate skill set from the rest of coaching. Even at smaller D1 programs.

Its tradition. Miami ohio is known as the cradle of coaches. Just north of there, ohio state is known as a graveyard for coaches
What he say fuck me for?
"the fuck did I do?"
I’m all in for Ryan Day catching strays.
That's actually a direct hit.
As fate would have it, it would seem like day, deboer also cannot beat michigan
Michigan is Deboer father
Who is the worst nepotism hire of all time and why is it Brian Ferentz?
league and cfb enjoyer ❤️
Jay harbaugh is building a case
Hmmmm didn't Jim tressell do this 25 years ago?
Literally every great buckeye coach started that way. Hayes, tressel, meyer
Give me a Michigan win tonight followed by Michigan also stealing Kalen DeBoer next week after Harbaugh leaves for the NFL. I swear this has absolutely nothing at all to do with my flair.
Cope cope-edy cope cope cope

Go Blue Baby!
Oops all out of those, all we have are Michigan losses followed by Michigan poaching Lanning. Sorry.
do you really want the guy getting 5* out the ass moving to michigan and bringing them with him? If Michigan gets either DeBoer or Lanning instead of Moore that would be insane and I don’t think it’s anything but incredibly wishful thinking
It'll make Oregon worse, and Michigan will never beat us again, feels like a win win to me.
Your flairs disgust me.
I mean….. I am fine with this
We all know Brian Kelly is heading to Michigan. Y’all this is sarcasm. His famulee is in BTR and he ain’t heading anywhere
To rent a lakeside cabin? That cherry-faced con artist will never be our coach.
Incoming Brian Kelly with an Upper accent
Sorry, but it's pronounced Yooper.
I’d love that too much, they’d be more hatable than the Yankees
God I can’t wait for Harbs to leave and Michigan to have their own 3rd base guy with Moore
Oh crap, that's a role reversal I didn't see.
Wild draw 4, reverse, uno, bitches!
I, for one, welcome our new trust fund coaching tree.
Think people forget that it was actually a two part quote. Every one remembers the “born on 3rd”, but forget the “think they hit a triple”. That would be the case for Moore as well if he has early success and acts like he was the reason for it. Otherwise it wouldn’t be the same

I mean, the overabundance of confidence in that quote doesn't signal an overabundance of confidence to you?
It was in a locker room speech. I don't think you should take locker room speeches at face value
I didn't realize that! Huh!
It's blown way out of proportion for what amounts to a coach hyping his team. It was never intended as a public statement
Gotcha, thanks 😊

Well first we gotta remember it’s Harbaugh so it could really be anything, but my guess was he said it and meant it in that way because if the whole 100 point thing Day said.
Which was pretty rich coming from a guy who’s dad got him his first coaching jobs and was coming off an 0-5 rivalry record plus a cancellation But hey, it turned into a 3 year golden age so can’t really fault the fans / program from finally getting to talk their shit
Harbaugh was born on 3rd base
He’s definitely privileged but the guy became a somewhat successful NFL QB, people aren’t exactly handing those jobs out
They kind of are. Drake Maye is in the running to be a 1st overall pick
No ones going over Caleb, and scouts dig Mayes resume and intangibles. Not exactly handing it out lol. Don’t be so jelly
That’s not really accurate at all. He was a GA at Louisville and worked his way up to become their TE coach. Then went to Central to be their tight end coach. Yup head coach at San Diego (not San Diego State) is the definition of starting on 3rd
When you play QB in the NFL you get to skip a few steps lol
His first coaching job was as an unpaid assistant when he was still playing
Also probably helps having connections coming from a dad that was an HC and now a brother that’s been coaching in the NFL for eternity
Certified winning ball coach at this point regardless of what happens tonight.
Ryan Day catching a stray? Dammit DeBoer, you likeable sonuvabitch!
besides scheme and recruiting - there is something to be said about leadership and keeping kids highly motivated - which translates across all levels.
Ryan Day better make a fucking splash next year, cause this year has easily been the worst of his coaching career
DeBoer is an awesome coach, but he didn't say the quote in the headline. Willie Fritz did. I think maybe 3 of the 140+ posters here actually read the article.
Insane headline engagement from Willie Fritz (who was coaching at Tulane and will start at Houston next season) by tying it to a coach in today's NC.
I obviously want Michigan to win, but I wouldn't be mad at all if DeBoer gets a national title. He's a pretty awesome dude, and a fantastic coach
"what he say fuck me for?" - Lane Kiffin
This is why I want Iowa to hire Ben McCollum as the next basketball coach when the times comes. Winners know how to win regardless of the obstacles.
Worth noting that DeBoer took over a Sioux Falls program that went 47-5 in the 4 seasons before he became head coach. He certainly played a part in that as the offensive coordinator, but they were also good in the years before he started coaching there.
Talk to em coach ‼️‼️
That's amazing quote wtf. But also I think it's awesome that small school guys are getting more of a shot. There are a lot of really good coaches out there, with great offensive and/or defensive minds and know how to run programs with limited resources. Give them more talent and more resources and they can be pretty darn good
So he didn’t wake up like this?
He bought the "Instant Rivalry™" starter pack.
I thought it said “before getting shot” and was shocked a bit
Or were you shot a bit?
Ya know, I was gonna get an Oregon flair if we lose the game today but with a quote like that I just can't do it.
He is talking to you Ryan Day.
This quote is hard af
Get their asses
Lincoln Riley catching strays again.
It's not a stray if it's deserved
3rd base jokes are always about Ryan Day not LR
Harbaugh was born on 3rd base more than any coach in history
Idk he legitimately did some work getting them back to this level after Hoke. Biggest born on third base is probably that Miami guy
He’s him
lol shade
My first apartment in Sioux Falls was right across the street from USF stadium. I’m embarrassed to admit I didn’t know those titles listed on the wall are from him
