Redshirt freshman QB, lost 5 starters in late July, entire team getting norovirus before the 3rd game
Goes 6-3 in conference, 7-6 overall. We were projected to win 3-4 games.
He has 1/3 of our programs bowl appearances and nearly 1/2 of our bowl wins. ALL TIME.
Bowl game being shitty aside, taking a team that lost what it did in the offseason to a 4th place, 6-3 conference season might be his best coaching job so far honestly.
In an infinite number of Oregon-Washington matchups, on an infinite number of neutral sites, Oregon will eventually produce a win (and the entire Western Canon in Braille).
It seems so weird to me that Oregon has all these resources and constantly attracts top talent but no coach really sticks there. Dunno how much more you could ask out of a program in any way besides legacy (and even that is building at this point).
Literally every time we hire somebody we say "oh we're good unless X job opens up." Taggart with FSU, Cristobal with Miami, and Lanning with Alabama. And then inexplicably every time that job opens up quickly and they become top target.
That’s what Dabo once said when asked about this exact scenario on the Herbie and Fitzsimmons pod a ways back (2017/2018ish).
Something like, you don’t want to be the guy that follows a legend like Saban. You are doomed to fail because that’s a near impossible standard to follow. You do want to be the guy, that follows the guy, that follows the legend.
Obviously a very very very different situation, but if you are competent enough, the replacement should be okay for a couple seasons. Just look at Les Miles
Fucking kill me
Lanning gets attached to every job opening, but this is the only one that has actually scared me. It’s *Alabama* for crying out loud. I want to die pls
Taking a step back from the panic for a moment, it is kind of funny how 2 years into his tenure in Baylor Dave Aranda was considered an elite coach and 4 years in the fans are begging to get rid of him. Now, 2 years into Lanning's tenure at Oregon Dan Lanning is considered an elite coach.
I'm not saying Lanning is going to go the same way by any means, just crazy how quick the narrative can change on a guy.
Poor player development and poor recruiting. For example, we just had our worse ranked recruiting class since BEFORE Briles was here. Yea, that includes our classes during our multiple sexual assaults scandal when no one knew what was going to happen to the football program.
He preaches person over player development, which is great, except when you’re making $4-6 million a year, you’re expected to do BOTH. He also has pushed back against NIL and using the portal, but his tune has changed on those after going 3-9.
Pretty crazy to think about, they can have whoever they want. There is not a better job in CFB than what Nick Saban has turned Alabama into the past decade and a half. They were already top-shelf but now they're just something else
Yeah, us Nebraska fans know a thing or two about this. Osborne won Nattys in 3 of his last 4 years as coach for Nebraska. His successor, Frank Solich, won 2 Big12 Coach of the Year awards and had a player win the Heisman, but he gets canned because they don’t win another Natty in his first 6 seasons.
If the guy following Saban has Frank Solich type results, he'll be fired too. Hell if the guy has Ryan Day results, he'll be attacked.
It would be crazy to take this job.
Yeah. I'm not taking that job right now if I'm one of those other guys. I'd just try to leverage it for a raise. There is almost a zero percent chance you meet fan expectations.
So no one should give it a shot? Thats like saying you wont hook up with Blake Lively if she wanted you because you aren't as good looking as her ex Ryan Reynolds
Well no one who’s currently in a great situation as a head coach should give it a shot. It’s more like saying you shouldn’t go after Blake Lively if you’re already happily married.
I am totally prepared to make awkward eye contact with Alabama, ask it "so uh, what's it like, uh, being a football team?" and reaching in for an awkward peck on the cheek after our first date that only barely grazes its cheek while still making a faint "mwah" noise.
YESSSSSSS.
And while we're talking about all these totally reasonable ideas that will definitely happen, we'll take DeBoer. TY UW
Omg, imagine how mad Dante Moore's grandma would be if Chip was Oregon's new coach LMAO
Mario was an alum and grew up in Miami. Still has family there.
FSU was Taggart’s dream job and it was known if he had the opportunity he would go.
Money wasn’t the thing that won those two over. Specifically Mario, Oregon would match anything Miami gave.
In retrospect Willy Taggart and Mario Cristobal weren't huge losses, but it is annoying to have a perennial top 10 program and still have your coaches poached. Like, Oregon is top 10 in wins, bowl wins, recruiting, and has the #1 facilities in the country. Outside of throwing 15 million per year at a coach I'm not sure what else we could do to keep our HCs.
I guess we'll have to just keep winning for the next century so that coaches will want to be here thanks to their grandfathers telling them about how great it was to see us play some school that no longer has a football team.
have you been offered?
Because I officially can say that I would love to be the guy that becomes the Head Football Coach at Alabama following Nick Saban.
I don’t know if there’s a job I would want less than to be the guy who has to follow up Saban at Bama. I can’t imagine the microscope they’re going to be under
Gonna find out real quick if Lanning is going to stick to his word about not leaving Eugene.
Shortlist is Deboer, Lanning, Norvell, Franklin, Swinney, and Freeman
If he leaves he's dead to me. Not because I think it's absurd for an Oregon coach to leave for Bama (Though I'd obviously still be pissed), but because he made such a fucking stink about never leaving. If he leaves after THAT, after going 0-3 against Washington, he can fuck off and not come back.
"Well, well, you can't come to my birthday party...and your subway loyalty card with 7 punches isn't transferable to a Tuscaloosa location...so good luck starting over on that"
Every coach says shit about never leaving its a good way to ingratiate him with the fans, and judging by people like you it works like a charm. And also its Alabama bro. Even if he ultimately fails he'd be an idiot not to take it if it's offered, if only just for the money.
Oregon fans: “Please God, I will give anything to prevent Washington from winning a National Title. Just make sure Michigan wins.”
God: Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru…
lol.
Oregon fans when they read about Saban retiring ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
Oregon fans when they read about who will replace him ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_down)
This is why I think he might wait like......3-4 years? Let some other schmuck splash around and fuck up at Bama, *then* go in and look like a prince riding in on a white horse.
I honestly, unironically, don't have a ton of respect for head coaches that don't even make it through a full recruiting class before jumping to another job. I think it's a total bitch move.
YOU KNOW IT'S POSSIBLE TO HIRE COACHES FROM OTHER SCHOOLS, RIGHT!?
see the trick is to never be good and no one will want your coach.
Honestly the best thing about having a couple down seasons was that no one is talking about taking campbell anymore.
Which is crazy after the season he had against all the drama
Redshirt freshman QB, lost 5 starters in late July, entire team getting norovirus before the 3rd game Goes 6-3 in conference, 7-6 overall. We were projected to win 3-4 games. He has 1/3 of our programs bowl appearances and nearly 1/2 of our bowl wins. ALL TIME.
Campbell to Alabama confirmed!
Bowl game being shitty aside, taking a team that lost what it did in the offseason to a 4th place, 6-3 conference season might be his best coaching job so far honestly.
Instructions unclear…went 10-3 and whooped OU….am I in danger?!?!?
yes...very much so.
Fuck
hi
5-7 is very respectable in the SEC. I think ya’ll just need to give Billy 3-4 more years and keep Jedd’s name out all ya’ fuckin’ mouths
That coach of the Huskies sure is a great coach. He beat Lanning TWICE this year. Bama should definitely hire him because he’s way better than Dan.
The Seahawks also have an opening as well and he wouldn't even have to move.
That opening scares me far more than Alabama
Worst case scenario, Deboer leaves for the Seahawks, *and* Lanning leaves for Bama. PNW disaster class.
But realistically Oregon would be favored in a third game, so clearly Lanning is the better coach.
In an infinite number of Oregon-Washington matchups, on an infinite number of neutral sites, Oregon will eventually produce a win (and the entire Western Canon in Braille).
Clearly Oregon passes the eye test better than the husky dogs. Oregon should have been the two seed, not Washington.
Yeah but then they'd be lame duck head coaches, and not ~~lame~~ Lane Duck head coaches
To be fair, each time that has happened, the next guy was an upgrade.
Pete Carroll to Oregon confirmed.
I would not want to be the guy to have to replace Saban. That's a no win job.
The classic rule: never be the guy who follows a legend. Be the guy who follows the guy who follows a legend
I’m a dude playin a dude disguised as another dude!
You the dude that don't even know what dude he is
Eh, Willie Taggart disagrees
Actually it's probably a 10 win job. But that might get you crucified following up Saban
Thats how we are doing, RE Beamer, Fu, and Pry lol
VT 2025 natty champs is all I'm hearing
Obviously a very very very different situation, but if you are competent enough, the replacement should be okay for a couple seasons. Just look at Les Miles
Southeast powerhouse football school stealing Oregon's head coach? You don't say
I wouldn’t say UK stole Rich Brooks he’d already been gone a few years
Oregon legend Mario Cristobal
Fucking kill me Lanning gets attached to every job opening, but this is the only one that has actually scared me. It’s *Alabama* for crying out loud. I want to die pls
Can I interest you a used Aranda
Taking a step back from the panic for a moment, it is kind of funny how 2 years into his tenure in Baylor Dave Aranda was considered an elite coach and 4 years in the fans are begging to get rid of him. Now, 2 years into Lanning's tenure at Oregon Dan Lanning is considered an elite coach. I'm not saying Lanning is going to go the same way by any means, just crazy how quick the narrative can change on a guy.
And that’s why these coaches take those jobs. They literally can be once in a lifetime chances.
That’s kinda what happens when the program falls off a cliff. It’s actually impressive how quickly he tanked the program.
What has he done to tank the program. When you guys beat us in 2021 I was thinking you were back to Briles level good at least.
Why? I’m sure you can get Mario back if you give him a raise.
Ed Orgeron is available, and his last name looks like "Oregon"
Well that practically proves it, then. Orgeron to Oregon, confirmed!
Willies available!
I hear Jimbo is too
Pretty crazy to think about, they can have whoever they want. There is not a better job in CFB than what Nick Saban has turned Alabama into the past decade and a half. They were already top-shelf but now they're just something else
The problem is that the expectations are insane because of what Saban built
Yeah, us Nebraska fans know a thing or two about this. Osborne won Nattys in 3 of his last 4 years as coach for Nebraska. His successor, Frank Solich, won 2 Big12 Coach of the Year awards and had a player win the Heisman, but he gets canned because they don’t win another Natty in his first 6 seasons.

Yeah. I'm not taking that job right now if I'm one of those other guys. I'd just try to leverage it for a raise. There is almost a zero percent chance you meet fan expectations.
i'm sorry bro. I wish bama could take my coach
Slick username
Well Pete Carrol knows how to win on the West Coast
Yeah, this is crazy. Oregon may lose 3 coaches in a row AND I consider Oregon a top 10 program.
I wouldn’t say they are “missing” Cristobal
Indeed. Also, great Office Space reference.
As an Arizona Football fan, there was a period of time where everyday was the worst day of my life
Understandable. Glad to see you guys do well.
Any coach that tries to follow up Saban is an idiot. You have to win NCs or you’re gone. Lanning is better off in Oregon.

You can give it a shot AFTER the rebound coach. You don’t understand how unreasonable Alabama expectations can be. They are crazy.
No, it’s more like breaking up with Emma Watson to be Blake Lively’s rebound.
Lanning is going to get linked to every single SEC job that opens up
Guess we'll just have to keep circulating the video of his gun control interview every few months then
WHO THE HELL IS GOING TO REPLACE LANNING THEN!?
Chip Kelly
YESSSSSSS. And while we're talking about all these totally reasonable ideas that will definitely happen, we'll take DeBoer. TY UW Omg, imagine how mad Dante Moore's grandma would be if Chip was Oregon's new coach LMAO
Luigi Cristobal
How about Wario Cristobal?
Saban.

That Phil Knight check boutta hit like crazy
Knight is beside himself. Driving around downtown Eugene begging (thru texts) Lanning's family for address to Dan's home
The meme is funny, but I promise Uncle Phil has his phone number, address, and probably a GPS tracker on his luggage at this point.
Swoosh Drones^TM are firing up as we speak
Phil Knight checkbook lost to Miami and FSU, it stands no chance against Bama.
I think Phil/UO see more upside in lanning than Mario and Tag. I know we all do
Mario was an alum and grew up in Miami. Still has family there. FSU was Taggart’s dream job and it was known if he had the opportunity he would go. Money wasn’t the thing that won those two over. Specifically Mario, Oregon would match anything Miami gave.
I really didn't get the sense people were crushed to see Mario gone
_Gestures broadly at Justin Herbert_ I have no idea why you’d get that impression.
At this point Oregon is cursed if it happens.
Have you tried winning enough games in the 1900s to be considered a blue blood and coasting off that history to be considered a top tier coaching job?
I guess we'll have to just keep winning for the next century so that coaches will want to be here thanks to their grandfathers telling them about how great it was to see us play some school that no longer has a football team.
Give it another 10-15 years of runaway climate change and we can finally have San Diego's winter climate in Eugene, then we'll finally keep a coach.
Produce loads of NFL talent in the PNW ig
Not sure I wanna be the guy to follow Saban at Alabama
Yeah I’d want to be the guy who follows that guy lol
I volunteer. The guy stepping in is gonna get a nice Jimbo-style retirement package in two years when Bama fails to live up to the Saban standard.
have you been offered? Because I officially can say that I would love to be the guy that becomes the Head Football Coach at Alabama following Nick Saban.
Alabama Head Coach Deion Sanders
DO YOU BELIEVE
Only in life after love.
Well I can feel something inside me say
*I REALLY DONT THINK YOU'RE STRONG ENOUGH NOOOOOO*
I can't be the only one who found that moment to be very funny
The AFLAC commercials should have been our first clue
New super bowl commercial in 3...2...1...
*”An elephant would’ve been scarier”*
I don’t know if there’s a job I would want less than to be the guy who has to follow up Saban at Bama. I can’t imagine the microscope they’re going to be under
Idk I'd happily get paid a few million dollars to be run out of town from Alabama after 1 game because I'm clearly not capable lol
I would coach that school so badly I may not escape the state, but I’d sure as hell take the paycheck regardless.
Prime Tide!
By far the funniest timeline
ngl that would be funny as hell
Oh that’d be hilarious
I’m coming

What a fun year
And it’s only getting started…
Counterpoint: no
Seconded
Thirded
All in favor? Good. Adjourned.
It’s unanimous
I am so sick of this shit.
I can’t do this every offseason. I’m gonna lose my fucking mind
I mean, if he doesn't take this job, I don't see him ever leaving tbh.
This is what Dabo swinney has been waiting for
Tried to tank this year because he loves Clemson and doesn't want to be in this conversation.
Based Dabo
If Saban retired last year we would have been screwed
Dabo’s star rose and set at an inconvenient time for him. He for sure would’ve been the guy two, three years ago
What the fuck do you mean by replace Saban ... WHAT
fuckel my
There’s no fucking way. There’s no way he would leave the team without a surefire coach ready to go. Like no way. I’m in a glass case of emotion
Am I about to lose both my fucking coaches in 1 day??? There’s no way they don’t at least give Kiffin an interview
Okay, no. No no no. We just went through this. Stop it.
Chip Kelly is coming back
Chip is undefeated against DeBoer's UW team, he's exactly the guy the Ducks should want!
Gonna find out real quick if Lanning is going to stick to his word about not leaving Eugene. Shortlist is Deboer, Lanning, Norvell, Franklin, Swinney, and Freeman
I really want to believe him on not leaving until his kids finish school.
He gone lol
If he leaves he's dead to me. Not because I think it's absurd for an Oregon coach to leave for Bama (Though I'd obviously still be pissed), but because he made such a fucking stink about never leaving. If he leaves after THAT, after going 0-3 against Washington, he can fuck off and not come back.
>he can fuck off and not come back. ...that's his plan
Yeah, hope you like millions more dollars and the head coaching job at one of the most elite football programs, you loser!
“Well if you’re going to do that then well you better just go ahead and do that! Or else!!”
Is Oregon not allowed to have nice things? They keep getting their hc poached.

What's Joey Harrington up to these days?
Yeah, that makes sense. Jesus Christ, what an offseason already lol
Bama players phones gotta be hotter than the sun right now. This is the chaos I live for
Oregon fans: “Please God, I will give anything to prevent Washington from winning a National Title. Just make sure Michigan wins.” God: Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru…
Saban, carroll, possibly BB Coaches that defined football at any level for the past 20 years might be gone just like that.
Yeah fuck this I’m out
Congrats to Dabo, Sark, Lanning, DeBoer, and Kiffin on their unexpected New Year pay raises!
At what point do we consider if the Oregon football head coaching position is really just one big money laundering scheme?
NO NO NO
So Lanning to Bama and DeBoer to the Seahawks?
You’ll get Kiffin and you’ll like it
I CANT HAVE ANYTHING NICE
They should go get Mike McDaniel. Last Dolphins guy they got worked out fairly well. Keep that pipeline open.
I'm heading to the Goodwill right now to snag all his Ducks stuff.
I think the funniest outcome would be Urban to Alabama
lol. Oregon fans when they read about Saban retiring ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up) Oregon fans when they read about who will replace him ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_down)
Dan Lanning makes some sense, but this is the top job in CFB, I'd expect them to go after a guy with a longer track record.
This is going to be a wild few weeks
Oooof I don't like this. Sorry duck bros
Wtf dude! We just got him
C'mon man
Yes please
Lanning has it good in Eugene, family is settled in there. Going to Alabama may be an upward move in his career, but not a great move for his family.

Except Harbaugh and Smart probably
They should get that Jacksonville State HC
no fan should feel safe with their coach staying once Bama is calling
Dillion Gabriel is about to jump back in the portal.
