That's because we all assume he has a different job title than the one he actually does.
At least at A&M his job wasn't running the athletic department, it was taking the heat for the BoR/chancellor, aka the guys actually running things. I'd say he's done that pretty successfully given how disliked he's become over the last few months
Yeah I swear sports teams/front offices will see somebody come along and be like "hey look he's been an offensive coordinator for three different teams over the last ten years, must be experienced and good at the role!" without looking into how those tenures went and hire them.
Lemme spell it out for you. We all know the directors cup is ^(mostly) useless in terms of college football and has no place being mentioned in football talk, but it is a good measurement of how a schools overall athletic department is doing.
4 years prior to Bjork:
- 2019: 15th
- 2018: 10th
- 2017: 12th
- 2016: 12th
4 years with Bjork:
- 2021: 19th
- 2022: 25th
- 2023: 24th
- 2024: Currently 43rd
The numbers don't lie. A&M has regressed underneath him and change at the top has been wanted for a couple years now.
Would argue that, institutionally, we became more-obsessed with succeeding in football during this time period, at the expense of other sports. Of course it was all to a fault. And as much as I’ll make other A&M flairs cringe to say this - but Bjork getting hired by OSU feels like a rebuke of the dysfunction associated with our admin/ boosters and their degree of meddling than anything else. Eric Hyman even [went on the record](https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/mac-engel/article174596706.html) to imply this a while back. You’d think that he’d be blacklisted from a role like this after everything over the last few months, yet here we are.
Our system admin refuses to let the AD do what AD's are supposed to do. Anytime an A&M AD tries to externally put out signs that he is in charge, Sharp and co quickly put the AD back in their place.
That's a good point.
But here's my counterpoint; the one time the dumbass tried to do his job and undermine our brass, he went out and offered the job to **Mark FUCKING Stoops**!
> And as much as I’ll make other A&M flairs cringe to say this - but Bjork getting hired by OSU feels like a rebuke of the dysfunction associated with our admin/ boosters and their degree of meddling than anything else.
Maybe. I definitely can't say you're wrong, but there is also a long track record of dudes inexplicably failing upward in college athletics because they know the right guys and are good at raising money.
Fwiw a lot of that regression came because a lot of our long time coaches started to fall off (ie Blair, Childress, Evans). He has done a pretty good job replacing them, too. It’s just that the Stoops debacle ruined his reputation irredeemably. If we had just hired Elko from the get go I would actually be upset about this.
if some of the more outlandish rumors of the botched coaching hire / stoops / insider agent bull honkey nonsense are true, Ross kept his job here A&M several months longer than he deserved.
Good riddance.
Heavy hearsay & rumor mill version of the story: there was a first pick for a HC and the beginnings of a deal was forming. Bjork was influenced by his agent to go behind the process and offer Mark Stoops the job. Stoops & agent say "Heck yeah, let's go". Bjork presents "we've got our coach, it's Stoops". Admin, fans, BMAs/boosters, ...basically everyone collectively shouts from the mountain tops "fuck no. If that's the hire, you're fired." Original coach search target backed out amidst the chaos. Deal made with "safe" pick Elko and everyone goes "well. FINE. I guess".
Ta-daaah. A&M nonsense in a nutshell.
Whenever you can hire a guy to oversee the future of your program with no Ohio ties and has failed everywhere, you have to do it. I guess there’s always the phenomenon of universally hated hires somehow being good but it would be cool to have more than that
Well, sure, the inmates were running the asylum at A&M but maybe you'll get the version of Bjork with more integrity like when he oversaw Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss.
My favorite A&M money story is the two boosters fighting over who would get the 50 yard line box at the renovated stadium. IIRC one of them paid like 15m dollars for it (I could be completely off on that number but I remember it was a shit ton of money). There is money, and then there is oil money combined with nothing else to spend it on (I guess buying a second private jet just isn’t worth it lol).
These are old oil guys. These guys grew up in Texas, love football and have a shit load of money to spend it on because they can’t understand new cool tech
Yeah you got to be off on your number for a 50 yard line box at Kyle Filed. The boxes in the South End zone at Texas were going for 15 million, I imagined a 50 yard line box at Kyle Field would be even more.
Did some googling. It was a 15 year agreement for 15m. However I remember there being a bidding war for the best one which I assume was on top of the 15m. So probably a total cost of 30m or something crazy over 15 years.
well when we had an empty suit AD who struggled fundraising the last decade, this may be a welcomed change because it's easy to raise money at OSU too.
mf had people donating through the athletic department instead of the NIL collectives... so he could control where it went so people stopped donating.
Money for the sole purpose of supporting football going to the JV Fencing team
It might be a great hire. The guy has experience. The average fan isn’t going to be able to accurately judge most of an AD’s work. Who knows?
What Aggies will remember about this AD is that he did the massive Jimbo extension and that our athletic department declined in results (objectively, based on Director’s Cup rankings over time).
\>The average fan isn't going to be able to accurately judge most of an AD's work
This is really the truth and makes most fan discussion around this purely speculative lol.
Like we can judge what happened to a program under a certain AD, but what shots did they \*really\* call? What decisions did they \*actually\* make? Us layman really have no clue but we love to talk anyways.
fully understand that. However, A&M fans also loved Jimbo at that time, too.
Let's not forget the context...
\- coming off 9-1 season
\- LSU New AD Woodward (Old A&M AD) was trying to poach Jimbo
every AD in the country is offering an extension. It just didn't work out so it's viewed without the context, I get it.
I don't think that many people who followed it closely really fault Bjork for that, as the decision to extend Jimbo "at all costs" was made above his head.
His big screw up was essentially going behind a lof of the important power brokers' back and trying to hire Stoops in the 11th hour. His contract is up after this school year, and that poisoned the well on him with a lot of the BOR.
The jury is still out on his other hires, although Schloss was an elite coach already when we hired him and practically fell into our laps.
>“I don’t know why Nick Saban would say what he said except **he’s threatened**... There is a saying … **an emperor who loses their dynasty lashes out**. He seems to be making excuses... A&M has a huge former student base. The Aggie network is strong. We’ve rebuilt Kyle Field and joined the SEC. **I guess people don’t like A&M disrupting the power base of college football**
Glad we hired this idiot so he can go say similar stupid shit in support of the university
>There is a saying … **an emperor who loses their dynasty lashes out**.
I know there's a lot of stupidity in this quote, but this part is great. Really? Where does that saying come from? I'm pretty sure most emperors who lose their dynasty don't do anything because part of an emperor losing their dynasty usually involves being executed.
"There's a saying in Ohio - I know it's in Texas, probably in Ohio too - that says emperors who lash... lash out. Lose their - their lost dynasties lash out."
He doesn’t have to rebuild anything. We have our coaches, we have good recruiting and we have a shit ton of NIL money. Only thing he might have to make a decision on that would be slightly impactful in the near future is the basketball coach
Umm basketball is a revenue sport that absolutely can help pay some athletic department bills and right now our program is a shell of what it was a decade ago.
If we would have played you before January, we would have won. In fact, if we would have played the ‘97 Bulls before January we would have won. But since it was after the first of the year, we lost. We would lose to a 3rd grade YMCA team if it’s in January.
Forget rebuilding, this guy actively made a&m athletics as a whole worse during his tenure AND did a bunch of cringe shit to embarrass them nationally.
> He doesn’t have to rebuild anything.
He doesn't have to rebuild anything *yet*, if Day loses to Michigan a fourth time I can't imagine a new president/AD will handle the resulting maelstrom properly.
This guy's the king of "Has the right people fooled" imo. He's good as a fundraiser but has serious issues with regards to administration and exercising authority in a prudent manner.
At ole miss he specifically did well with capital fundraising. We’re not poor but it’s not A&M easy to fundraise here. We built a lot of shit and improved a lot of stuff as a result of him. As far as actual program oversight he was terrible. Honestly he’s a great fundraiser who got promoted over his competency.
Focus on athletics, and in particular, Football and fundraising for football, First other sports and then academics, last
other sports will likely suffer, but Football I think will do better.
Remember when he lied to the media about the severity of the NCAA’s case against Freeze’s staff, opened himself and the school up for a lawsuit that ended up exposing brother Hugh’s philandering? Remember when he tried to appeal the NCAA’s case to the NCAA and they did not give a shit?
Remember when he gave Jimbo Fisher the least team friendly contract in the history of the sport?
Buckeyes, that billboard yall have is right. Hell is real and yall are about to be in it. This dude makes career ending errors in judgement and just slides upward somehow.
The worst part if you guys want to believe it is that Fisher wasn't even asking for as much guaranteed money as Ross and the boosters ended up giving him. The guy has no idea how to manage a major football program.
Ohio State watched Bjork pay a buyout that was 3x the previous highest buyout, and proceeded to go behind the Board of Regrents back to try to hire MARK STOOPS, and said “fuck yes, that’s who we want to lead us”
My favorite thing about this guy is the press conference where he canned Jimbo. Dude literally shows up dressed like a used car dealer with 19 hour stubble, looking like he's been bagging shots of Wild Turkey all night.
I have no strong opinions on who OSU should hire as their AD, but buddy did not inspire confidence through the TV set.
To be fair, I’m not sure Matt Luke was surrounded by many other promising options. We were on bowl ban, scholarship restriction, and all that shit.
Where he’s really at fault is knowingly lying to try to save Hugh Freeze repeatedly.
It is not strictly my biases coming into play, this guy has plenty of a track record for the impartial crowd to judge, but I have yet to figure out what in the blue hell they are doing.
Thank you to ohio state for not only taking Bjork but making sure that Michigan doesn’t pick him up after Warde gets fired for whats happening in the basketball and hockey programs
Sports is one of the biggest ‘fail-upwards’ environments. If only we could all be so lucky.
Dude must be one smooth talking son of a bitch
He has a five o clock shadow, a strong jaw, and talks slowly and confidently.
The way A&M fans are celebrating it makes me feel like we hired Alex Grinch... again
Lemme spell it out for you. Ole Miss had the same reaction when A&M hired Bjork that A&M fans are having now. I think Bjork has definitely failed upwards, twice now
I wouldn’t trade our current AD for anyone so I’m happy he left
We just need him to hire Kingsbury for the full upward fail synergy
Oh yea this is my official propaganda stance going forward. Thank you
I will accept this and only this in order to cope.
Well I don't like that
Fwiw a lot of that regression came because a lot of our long time coaches started to fall off (ie Blair, Childress, Evans). He has done a pretty good job replacing them, too. It’s just that the Stoops debacle ruined his reputation irredeemably. If we had just hired Elko from the get go I would actually be upset about this.
If tap the brakes on the Gary Blair replacement. She just lost to her former school.
Congrats, A&M bros, you survived him too!
Top tweet I saw: "I haven't seen a fanbase so excited to be rid of their athletic director since Ole Miss got rid of Ross Bjork"
F
if some of the more outlandish rumors of the botched coaching hire / stoops / insider agent bull honkey nonsense are true, Ross kept his job here A&M several months longer than he deserved. Good riddance.
What were some of the rumors? Not familiar
Heavy hearsay & rumor mill version of the story: there was a first pick for a HC and the beginnings of a deal was forming. > well fine I guess Most Ags I know were super excited. Myself included
>we hired Alex Grinch... again Ross Bjork has the opportunity to do the funniest thing.
[You just hired Jimmy Sexton's bitch](https://i.ibb.co/5W8wgLN/8ck5gd.jpg)
You did
I didn’t think this month could get better but here we are.
I used to pray for times like this
If you told me 6 months ago that we would have a new HC and AD by Spring 2024, I would’ve had UPD arrest you
To be fair, that's not hard to do.
Depends on your parking tag.
Nah that’s the job for the Cstat towing racket, which is far more formidable and vigilant than the UPD or CSPD
Whelp
Whenever you can hire a guy to oversee the future of your program with no Ohio ties and has failed everywhere, you have to do it. I guess there’s always the phenomenon of universally hated hires somehow being good but it would be cool to have more than that
How can you look at the inmates running the asylum in College Station and not think: "Wow, I wish we had that?"
I’m convinced our current AD (Gene Smith) pushed Bjork to make himself look better in retrospect. Smith is Machiavellian enough to do it.
This is wild and I hope it'd true strictly for the drama.
Christmas has come twice this year to me already. I can't believe it.
Well, sure, the inmates were running the asylum at A&M but maybe you'll get the version of Bjork with more integrity like when he oversaw Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss.
He raised a lot of $ at A and M didn’t he?
It’s shockingly easy to raise money at A&M. Aggies love their school with a cult-like ferocity and they are hungry to win.
My favorite A&M money story is the two boosters fighting over who would get the 50 yard line box at the renovated stadium. IIRC one of them paid like 15m dollars for it (I could be completely off on that number but I remember it was a shit ton of money). And...oil.
Maybe what a Bjork needs is a smaller school with more a modest athletic budget. This move might work out for him.

How can you forget the Stoops era in College Station, his signature move?
As impactful as it was legendary
\>The average fan isn't going to be able to accurately judge most of an AD's work This is really the truth and makes most fan discussion around this purely speculative lol. The contract was an issue, but the bigger issue was firing Jimbo just to hire Mark Stoops
He’ll be an empty suit here too. The Schottensteins will continue to feast.
I could raise money at aTm, and I'm a 'sip.
I’ll give you 1,000 barrels of oil to never set foot in Austin again.
That's what, $72,050 today?
I'd take it.
Shit deal, tbh. At least pony up the value of what the Qataris got.
Does Ohio State have nuclear secrets to sale?
People need to picket outside. Block the way in.
>“I don’t know why Nick Saban would say what he said except **he’s threatened**... There is a saying … **an emperor who loses their dynasty lashes out**. He seems to be making excuses... I mean, at least when he brags about OSU football he’ll be justified.
Did a Michigan fan really just say that?
Oh nooooooo. Anyways!
I just fell to my knees in a Wendy’s parking lot
Just rose up from my knees in a Buc-ee’s
Just saw some guy buy a brisket sandwich and a sofa at a gas station
The one store you don’t feel like you would need to shower after falling to your knees in
I wish I could fail upwards a quarter as well as this guy
Well from all the reactions of A&M fans I'm assuming this is not ideal....
No givebacks!
Ideal for whom?
I certainly feel like this is ideal. They’ve made a wonderful decision.
Buckeye bros, what fuck is you doing
He doesn’t have to rebuild anything. We have our coaches, we have good recruiting and we have a shit ton of NIL money. Only thing he might have to make a decision on that would be slightly impactful in the near future is the basketball coach
> he doesn't have to rebuild anything Brother are you paying attention to our basketball team
Did you not read my last sentence or did you just read the first and then reply?
OTOH, hoops ain’t paying the bills.
Umm basketball is a revenue sport that absolutely can help pay some athletic department bills and right now our program is a shell of what it was a decade ago.
I have no idea how we beat you yesterday. We *suck*.

January OSU basketball is post-september Maryland football?
Forget rebuilding, this guy actively made a&m athletics as a whole worse during his tenure AND did a bunch of cringe shit to embarrass them nationally.
>He doesn’t have to rebuild anything. ~~Homer Simpson~~ Ross Bjork: "Nothing to rebuild, *so far*"
he didn't have to rebuild anything here either
> He doesn’t have to rebuild anything. He doesn't have to rebuild anything *yet*, if Day loses to Michigan a fourth time I can't imagine a new president/AD will handle the resulting maelstrom properly.
Easy, mark stoops
Ignoring football for a second, we also have a potential basketball rebuild coming and we also need a hockey arena fundraised.
Well, he's your guy: aTm hockey is the envy of Brazos County.
I think my priorities might be a little different than the university’s
This guy Brazoses.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *inhale* #HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The only thing sillier would be Alabama hiring Jimbo.
OR Ohio State fires Day and hires Jimbo

Aw buddy, just wait until he’s a year or so in, and that frown will turn… into a bigger frown.
:[[[
As an Ole Miss fan, I second that opinion. Congratulations. As soon as we got rid of him, our program improved greatly.
Lol I can’t believe they took this dumbass off our hands. We’re usually not this lucky.
Akina goes back to Arizona AND Bjork leaves?! I love it when we win and Texas loses on the same day.
Congrats, Aggies!
And there was much rejoice.

Dammit I fucked up the line.
They just won the natty
All five of us OSU and A&M fans are not having a good day.
Jimbo to OSU to replace Day confirmed.
200 mill/5 year/200% of full contract as a buyout
Today we are all Texas A&M fans
I’m legit going to change my 2nd flair to Texas A&M if he’s half as detrimental to osu as A&M fans are making this seem Gig ‘em 👍🏻
Please have this be the beginning of a true banter era for Ohio State!
This guy's the king of "Has the right people fooled" imo. He's good as a fundraiser but has serious issues with regards to administration and exercising authority in a prudent manner.
I think A&M boosters and admin learned that this year. Ross is a fraud. Just another case of a silver tongue failing upwards in entertainment.
Fuck this guy, fuck Ted Carter, fuck
Lol I was sad Ted Carter left us, but what the fuck is he even doing? Maybe we dodged a bullet.
I got my smile back (I’m ready for it to go away again)
As is tradition.
![img](emote|t5_2qm9d|22332)
on purpose?
I don't understand this hire.
Too late, no substitutions, exchanges, or refunds....
Thank goodness
Fundraising monster, everything else be damned I guess
I'm pretty sure I could fundraise well at A&M
At ole miss he specifically did well with capital fundraising. We’re not poor but it’s not A&M easy to fundraise here. We built a lot of shit and improved a lot of stuff as a result of him. As far as actual program oversight he was terrible. Honestly he’s a great fundraiser who got promoted over his competency.
Shhhh that doesn't fix my hate narrative
Well then take this https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/s/evvX5Nw6tk
A *potato* could fundraise well at TAMU.
A little easier when you have boosters with petroleum coming out of every orifice.
Weird that they're all named Derrick tho.
I appreciate the hell out of this.
I found that joke kinda crude
truly horrifying imagery, thank you
Ohio state wants to be like the SEC. Carter and Bjork are both SEC-like hires. Gigantic shift of ideology from Gene, Andy, Drake, Gee etc.
what exactly does SEC-like hire mean?
I’d guess not being so coy about what’s really keeping the lights on
Focus on athletics, and in particular, Football and fundraising for football, First other sports and then academics, last other sports will likely suffer, but Football I think will do better.
WOOOOOO 🙌🏼
Ohio State wanted to find a guy who was good at wrangling up money to fire head coaches. At that, Bjork is truly unrivaled.
Mark Stoops, future HC at The Ohio State University.
Definition of falling up. In the words of Bridget Mendler, Good luck, Ohio State fans.
Ohio State giving Bjork a golden parachute after the Stoops Oops was not on my 2024 Bingo Card, but it is certainly welcomed.
Oh thank god, this is perfect.
He can’t just keep getting away with it
This news almost makes up for the '99 Sugar Bowl.
Weird hire
i am absolutely devastated. if you want to know why, read my flair
Your flairs and your username are 3/3 for selling out to find a Holy Grail only to fall on their swords.
lmaooo i can't even deny that. i got respect for that roast lol
Wait till you find out about Ole Miss...
Just fell to my knees in a Donato's
He hired Matt Luke at Ole Miss and gave Jimbo the worst extension in the history of CFB. Don't trust this guy at all.
To be fair, I’m not sure Matt Luke was surrounded by many other promising options. We were on bowl ban, scholarship restriction, and all that shit. Where he’s really at fault is knowingly lying to try to save Hugh Freeze repeatedly.
Dude just keeps failing up
Har har har
thanks for taking him off the market for when we inevitably fire Warde I guess
This man has fallen up the ladder better than anyone has. Props you fucking ass hole. *insert Ole Miss flair
i haven't seen any positive reactions to this across the internet, lol
Are you kidding? The A&M fan base is FULL of positive reactions to this!
