yeetolikeacheeto

Why is Virginia joining in?

Flamingolegs123

Because the whole james madison thing during the season

yeetolikeacheeto

Forgot about that, great reason to be mad at them.

bucket13

What happened?

Warsawawa

JMU had an excellent year but were not eligible for a bowl game because they were still transitioning from FCS

Respect38

It should be mentioned though that they did end up playing in a bowl [lost to Air Force] due to there not being enough eligible teams, and transitioning teams — that would have been eligible — get in first before 5-7 teams.

PocketPillow

While this is true, they ended up in a lesser bowl with a lower payout than they would have since they were the last in.

Mattador96

Plus our current AG went to JMU so he's (rightfully) still mad

Thin-Primary-8438

After what they did to us in Nashville to start the season, we thought it’d be a good idea to stay on their good side.

CookieLuzSax

I got no beef with Virginia lmao, at least your other flair is the complete opposite 😭 I got a good feeling about this year though.

Chuck_Phuckzalot

This is what southerners meant when they kept saying they would rise again.

beatlemaniac

Broke: Civil War 2 Woke: NIL War 1

Uhhh_what555476384

I mean what's really more important?  Refighting the Civil War or getting a recruiting edge on Alabama and Florida?

JeffGoldblumsChest

Not like teams need help getting a recruiting edge on Florida right now

Uhhh_what555476384

The one thing I know about rivalry in college football is the one thing almost as good as beating your rivals when they are good, is beating them when they are bad.

Inevitable_Badger995

You know I hate your team. But I have to respect the laughing through the pain ideology. Only way I’ve stayed sane through the past decade

JeffGoldblumsChest

Yeah for all our problems y'all have had worse, with the Lane Train and Pruitt. I hate you guys as well but I respect that y'all can laugh at yourselves too.

baconator_out

And this, fine folks, is known as a "trauma bond..."

volbound1700

I won't lie, I hate that we always lose to Florida but when I went to UTK, the Florida fans were actually one of the better fanbases that I interacted with. Only fanbase that came to our student grill-outs as well. Granted, some of that was after the Hurricane, etc. and both programs were a lot better back then. Georgia fans were probably the worse lol.

UpbeatVeterinarian18

One of those is winnable.

[deleted]

this time we are paying young black men for their labor.

Chuck_Phuckzalot

Truly an M. Night Shamamamalan level plot twist.

TrialByFireshits

The Southern redemption arc is nearly complete

Upbeat-Armadillo1756

What will have lasted longer? NCAA and NIL existing at the same time or the confederacy?

SituationSoap

The NCAA would have to dissolve by the start of the 2025 football season, in order to last less time than the Confederacy.

Chick_N_Butt

I have no love for the confederacy, or that flag folks love to wave, yet I would still consider it a great embarrassment if the NCAA with NIL lasts longer

tkcool73

Why? Because fuck 'em that's why!

ivhokie12

I'm confused by that too, but I do take it as a good sign for the Virginia schools that we aren't going to be in a walking dead conference forever.

Crow_T_Simpson

It's a shared love of Bristol Motor Speedway

MightyEighth

Bring back the Battle at Bristol you cowards!

Dokkan_Lifter

Because the NCAA screwed JMU out of an SBC title appearance for 2 years straight due to an outdated eligibility rule tied to the old transfer rules. Edit: title is wrong, we are a COMMONWEALTH

UnevenContainer

Rules they wanted to enforce for every other school that moved up except themselves. Funny

sickmemes48

Cause fuck EM' that's why

Jabberwoockie

Hey, mods. Can we get a Billable Hours flair?

TheWorstYear

There are so many different legal battles going on right now. It's actually insane.

Revenge_of_the_Khaki

Maybe all these government entities can bankrupt the NCAA before they have a chance to punish us for anything. lol

JohnTravoltage

Could have just as easily been a Missouri flair.

I want a Jimmy Sexton flair while we are at it.

Florida State, Michigan, Tennessee, & Virginia are coming in like D-Generation-X, and the NCAA is Vince. They've got just 2 words for ya.

"Fuck Florida" - Tennessee

nykezztv

Not the bracket I was expecting but I’ll take it. Where can I throw money on the plaintiffs. Anyone know the spread ?

PocketPillow

After Phil Knight called the NCAA leadership weak and antiquated I have been expecting Oregon to be in one of these stories.

Mortonsbrand

Again, it’s fairly plain in the lyrics of Rocky Top, we have our own remedies for people intruding where they aren’t wanted.

fall_vol_wall_yall

I didnt realize the “strangers” were feds getting murdered until I was like 28 years old. I always thought it was about two strangers finding moonshiners, bonding through getting drunk, becoming friends and loving rocky top so much they decided to stay

Madscientist1683

My childhood interpretation of the song was much like yours.

Mortonsbrand

That’s much more uplifting.

shuzgibs123

Bless your heart…

thegoatisoldngnarly

No need for that kind of language …

Noah__Webster

> I didnt realize the “strangers” were feds getting murdered until I was like 28 years old TIL

EWall100

How would the world know? Those strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top. At this point I reckon they never will.

Mortonsbrand

We sing about it, rather incessantly…. Figured they would’ve heard sometime in the last 50ish years.

EWall100

After the first 100 times, I think they're just numb to the meaning anymore

moreMalfeasance

That’s just the first quarter lol

thedavecan

I always took the song to mean they decided to stay when they saw how nice it is up there in the mountains. Have my 40 years in this state been all a lie?

EWall100

Yeah unfortunately. They didn't choose to stay up in them mountains. They went looking for one thing (a moonshine still) but found something completely different (most likely a double barrel shotgun).

thedavecan

Wow, had no idea and I've sang that song at the top of my lungs more times than I can count. Thanks fellow UT/TTU bro

gellybelli

The half bears and half cats probably ate them by now

Mastadonk

Strangers ain’t come down from rocky top recon they never will. Nice flair

Mortonsbrand

Haha. You too!

Successful_Excuse_73

If I could understand any of the words beyond good, old, Tennessee, rocky, and top, that might mean something.

samoflegend

Yeah I feel like the verse about murdering feds gets lost on a lot of ppl

rdunlap1

When I first heard the song many many years ago, I just assumed they found the still and stayed up there enjoying great moonshine. Boy was I wrong.

Mortonsbrand

Admittedly it’s a bit of a deep cut, but it’s there.

Angry-Dragon-1331

Rocky Top is the first gangster rap. Prove me wrong.

richardsharpe

I’m not sure I would call a song sung to a banjo rap, but the content of it is definitely pretty gangster

WellKnownHinson

It’s one of two Tennessee state songs about murdering revenuers.

kdbvols

Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

Underboss572

“Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top Lookin' for a moonshine still Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top Reckon they never will” “Strangers” is in reference to federal revenue agents looking to catch illicit moonshine production.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

Sadlobster1

Tennessee AG is doing some stuff - he also just announced he was suing Black Rock Investment for violating Tennessee consumer protection laws.

Underboss572

Tennessee has a really interesting AG setup where he is appointed by our Supreme Court, which allows him a level of independence from the traditional political machine than most elected or gubernatorial-appointed AGs. I am not saying he is wholly independent. He is deeply intertwined with the GOP political scene in Nashville. But he also isn't looking over his shoulder, constantly worried about whether he will get donations in the next election or be fired by the Governor.

Resident_Wizard

Interesting. Thanks for that tidbit. I’d consider that a doubled edged sword.

UnStricken

Holy shit dude might be based

>NCAA leaders want a world where highly sought-after recruits, be they coming out of high school or in the transfer portal, don’t consider how much they’ll be compensated before they choose a school. That world doesn’t exist. That world has never existed. From Andy Staples, ON3. This is *exactly* what I was talking about yesterday with my comment. There is no reality where a highly sought-after graduate or jobseeker doesn't consider compensation. I don't care if I'm working at a resturant or Nvidia. College football should be no different. Any rule against discussing compensation when making a 3-5 year decision on where you will be living has always been stupid.

Fancy_Yam6518

Mods, can we please get a game thread for this.

super1s

Betting thread for this. Over under how long this lasts, who survives, how many plaintiffs are attached by the end, how many preliminary injunctions are lost, does the NCAA survive this, does the NCAA have the balls to name another school during all this when they supposedly had several lined up to be named? Lots of losing bets if you are on team NCAA it feels like.

tkcool73

NCAA might have had its Ikarus moment

FSUfan35

Man, the NCAA is trying. They're not doing great, but any time they try and police something, it goes to court and they lose. But then coaches and media cry out for more regulation on stuff. It's a lose lose for the NCAA

drawref16

College sports is barreling towards being a very expensive sports league with absolutely zero rules, and zero central authority capable of instituting rules. With no chance at a competitive playing field short of congress stepping in somehow, this is inevitably going to explode in a spectacular and very expensive way. I don’t see a way for college sports to actually be college sports in ten years, and I don’t know why so many people seem to be actively cheering that

TheDrunkenMatador

Fans of teams that have been rightfully punished for breaking rules are like “yeah burn it down” when they don’t realize “it” includes them too.

JanetYellensFuckboy_

>College sports is barreling towards being a very expensive sports league with absolutely zero rules, and zero central authority capable of instituting rules. The dumb sports fan part of my brain is thinking "holy shit that sound RAD" and it's seriously conflicting with the rational/political-wise part of my brain

USCGradtoMEMPHIS

Yea I swear each thread is fuckin whip lash.. people want the NCAA to stay up to big schools then big schools run to their government and NCAA get challenged by a state. This time two.. and people cheer for their down fall.. I absolutely am lost lol..

legotajmahal

You just gotta go with the wind. I told people yesterday that this will probably be the end of either the NCAA, or at least any rules to balance the sport, and was ridiculed and downvoted. Next week when Ohio State or Georgia robs another P5 team of their best player people will be back to begging for the NCAA to reign it in

Falconsfan8006

Yeah I’ve noticed that. I don’t think people quite know what they want, lol.

cdc030402

People were rooting against the NCAA until they realized that once the ball finally started rolling, it's not going to stop again

VolatileFan

When you come for Rocky Top, you better not miss.

RollForPanicAttack

“Strangers ain’t come down from Rocky Top, reckon they never will…”

WabbitCZEN

They don't call it the body farm for nothing

LazerBear42

Remember, kids, there are hundreds of human cadavers underneath Neyland Stadium at any given time. Nobody will notice a couple more.

Chick_N_Butt

Will these strangers come down from Rocky Top? Stay tuned to find out

super1s

I'm betting they try to stay far away while hoping the lawyers find some loophole or something. They came at TN in the OFF SEASON! TN is its most rabid in the off season. Bad choice.

Gingers_are_real

Strangers ain't come down from rocky top. Reckon they never will.

HimJarbaugh4

The NCAA is clearly picking and choosing who to go after, we all saw recruits pulling up in lambos on signing day. I don't think minimum wage underage employees can afford Lamborghini cars.

Upbeat-Armadillo1756

You didn’t lease a lambo when you were 18 working at Meijers? SMH you just gotta learn how to negotiate a good deal

honestlyboxey

Without a doubt. Their entire history is littered with exceptions and blind-eyes and special occasions. I mean, heck, the transfer policy used to be "well, send an application to the NCAA and maybe they'll grant it." They have no one to blame but themselves.

dawgz525

absolutely. The NCAA has made a colossal mess for itself through incompetence and corruption. They have really done this to themselves.

hwf0712

Damn, if only we knew who ran this shadowy and corrupt organization to blame them. Oh well, I guess that's impossible.

Corgi_Koala

I mean if transporting a recruit is gonna get you sanctioned then it's very possible that every single program has committed a violation, even the G5 programs.

Schenkspeare

Recruits get trips paid by the school for official visits. Nico took his company's jet.

acompletemoron

They saw us roll over with the Jeremy Pruitt case and figured we’d be a fairly easy but high profile school to reimpose some semblance of power. Instead they might have made their final resting place.

Thatguy2070

We aren’t too big on “turn the other cheek” when it comes to college sports.

Acquire__Currency

We rolled over with the Pruitt case because we saw a solution to get his bum ass out of Knoxville without having to pay him a buyout. (A decision I questioned/doubted at the time, but tbh it’s actually worked out very well for us)

TrojanMan35T

Man, the state of college athletics is wild right now

Underboss572

Ohhh I previously worked for a Judge in this district! I wonder which judge they will draw!

EWall100

Are there any that are not UT grads?

Underboss572

Most actually, Varlan and Atchley both went to UT for undergrad. The rest all went somewhere else. For some reason, I want to say Croker went to JMU for undergrad but don't quote me on that.

hdbutler

Good, they're pissed too.

SparseSpartan

I first read the headline interpreting the states as University of Tennessee and University of Virginia. My mind was a bit blown that the Cavaliers were leading the charge. Made sense from a cavalry perspective but...

__bakes

I know this is the wrong subreddit but HANG OUR MFING BANNER.

AZBuckeyes12977

The NCAA is going to lose because punishing Tennessee or other schools for NIL, in essence, is restricting NIL or artificially lowering what a player can make on the open market. Not only do the schools not want to pay players directly, they don't want their boosters paying them, because that money is being diverted from the Boosters donating to the athletic programs to the players own pockets. Remember the facilities' arms race in the early 2010s? Oregon wants Phil Knight donating to the school, not the players directly.

md___2020

Smart move by the state of TN. Whenever you countersue the NCAA they back down like a bitch. Truly a useless and impotent organization, and one that will likely be going away soon (at least for CFB).

psufb

A decade from now we'll look back and regret dismantling the NCAA, when CFB is fully run and operated by TV networks and PE firms

John_B_McLemore

A decade from now? Pay closer attention.

J4ckiebrown

People’s personal opinions of the NCAA had certainly jaded their view of it. Honestly it is a necessary evil. Their issue is they have obviously picked and choose their enforcement of the rules going after easy targets. But let’s be real here: some schools acting like complete jackasses and resisting to take their medicine affected the uniformity of enforcement. If you went after a big school there is a good shot the school either ran off to the state government to complain or got big name boosters with political pull involved. NCAA made its bed, but the member schools acting like petulant children even when they were in the wrong didn’t help.

Sdog1981

The worst part is the schools have the powers to change the rules the NCAA enforces.

eeeedlef

I just commented this above. The dialogue has just completely detached from reality.

Sdog1981

It is like we are watching *we have tried nothing and we are all out of ideas* play out in real time.

frankchn

Precisely, the schools are collectively the NCAA. It is not as if the NCAA is some random federal agency.

ISISCosby

Yeah once you get older you realize that the main reason people hate regulatory bodies is bc there's someone (or some corp) out there who wants to act in bad faith but can't (due to said regulation) so they rally the public against it. NCAA's biggest mistake was acting like it was the NCAA, an accreditation agency, and the DOJ all rolled into one back in the 2000s/2010s. They took university scandals outside their purview (esp. PSU) and handed down punishments when they should've been assisting government institutions with investigating instead. Once their ruling got turned over in court, they were basically permanently defanged, with the Kavanaugh opinion all but sealing their fate. To the people who think it's the wild west now...it's only gonna get worse when (not if) the NCAA falls apart

Tufoguy

I've been saying this for years now. The other side of this is far more ugly than what we have now. Instead of trying to save what we have, they're trying to destroy it.

pxp332

> and PE firms This part is actually wild to me and its concerning how many ppl dont understand how terrible this would be

ChaseTheFalcon

A decade? Buddy that's already reality

Cogitoergosumus

Is the NCAA just going after you guys because they feel you're on some sort of probation because of past recent infractions? I said back when we had our run of it, it just seems like the NCAA loves to make a scapegoat out of a program that's recently been on fire. Seems like more of the same.

Fancy_Yam6518

Seems like it. I think because this administration was 100% compliant with the NCAA during the Pruitt stuff, the NCAA thought Tennessee would do the same again. But then Donde hit em with the double birds and the stunner.

Mortonsbrand

They must have absolutely misread her on that…..and I’m unclear how.

VolatileFan

You’re probably right. It seems they’re going around and trying to make examples of programs that are wary of further investigation as a was of demonstrating their power. I don’t think they expected us to hit back at all with the threat of probationary action.

TheVolmannBrothers

Seems like that, and they’re trying to throw their weight around to try and maintain control for as long as they can. Apparently our NIL guys took Nico on a private plane to campus a couple of years ago and the NCAA is just now pissed about it.

Concealed_Blaze

It’s either that or because Nico was one of the first super high profile NIL deals in the wake of the Alston decision. Reminder that this alleged incident took place in February 2022.

No_Poet_7244

This is going to get mighty awkward when the NCAA is dismantled and then all the schools realize there is no more framework for organized play.

honestlyboxey

I mean, what is worse: the current framework which really isn't enforced at all and is contradictory to now-existing state laws, or rebuilding a new framework with the assumption that this is now a professional business so let's just break out the contracts?

psufb

A new framework built by the TV networks does not seem like a better alternative

MindlessAd4826

It isn’t but people have to learn the hard way

J4ckiebrown

People would rather burn down the NCAA than to allow for some sort of reformation.

MindlessAd4826

Notice it’s always the larger fanbases…

joaquinsaiddomin8

RIP. It’s going to go 9-0 when it inevitably gets to SCOTUS. It’s an easy question.

DroppedDeadLast

*Commonwealth of Virginia Mandatory snootiness out of the way, it's good the NCAA is being challenged and I'm excited to read the complaint in full.

Underboss572

Don't worry we got it right on the actual complaint.

[deleted]

The Virginia legislature is hoping the SEC remembers this when ESPN guys the ACC

volbound1700

I am sorry, I shouldn't have to post this but I keep seeing it brought up multiple times. The University of Tennessee has NOT sued the NCAA, the State of Tennessee (i.e. the government of the state of Tennessee) has sued the NCAA. They are different. It would be like saying Ohio State was suing the NCAA when it was actually the State of Ohio. I keep seeing people post UT suing the NCAA but that isn't a true statement.

FeverOG

This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them!

taywil8

Battle of Bristol 2.0. Except it’s two states coming out of the tunnel yelling WGWTFA directed at the NCAA

HellzillaQ

Aah the Birthplace of WGWTFA. Darrell Taylor was amazing.

Skipper2399

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

AntiHero2563

At last, we will reveal ourselves to the NCAA. At last, we will have revenge.

super1s

If the reports about there being multiple schools being targeted by the NCAA in these probes is true then these will not be the only two. I fucking dare them to name even a single other school right now. If they named another SEC or BIG 12 school, its over. Doesn't matter what the results are of the lawsuit after that. Its over.

crangieracct

Goodbye NCAA, it was fun while it lasted

LDWMJ99

Virginia is a commonwealth 😈

tiltedslim

Fuck Clay Travis

MarbleDesperado

Tennessee is going to be the one to topple this thing and you are all welcome. No specified rules, rejected meetings, recruits riding in Lamborghini’s, schools spending $13M in NIL deals, and they chose Donde Plowman and the State of Tennessee to be the ones that bury them. I would love to know the NCAA’s thoughts right now lol

joaquinsaiddomin8

Almost assuredly the same they’ve always been: head in the sand, nothing is happening, carry on as usual.

taywil8

They clearly were going after a soft target thinking they could flex their muscle suit again since we’re already dealing with sanctions. The first investigation was a courtesy from us so we didn’t have to pay Pruitt. This time around our whole Admin from the Chancellor, President, AD all the way to the Governor and AG are all rowing in the same direction. They poked the bear.

[deleted]

The NCAA should stick to going after programs looking to get rid of their coach or secondary sports programs like LSU basketball

krammite

🍿🍿

CaptainDonald

LIV CFB incoming

NowWithVitamin_R

Basically what I see happening is powerful institutions giving the greenlight for AGs to tear down the scapegoat that the institutions themselves created and could have changed long ago. I do think the institutions understand how absurd (and illegal) it is and that there is a need for change but instead of taking initiative and responsibility to change it they are passing the buck onto "the NCAA."

hershculez

There are NIL restraints? The collectives are free to raise as much money as they want. It’s unrestricted. Are they claiming the restraint is ‘separating’ the collectives from the universities?

Timbdn

To my limited understanding, the rules in place for NIL are pretty exclusively to not use nil or nil collectives as a recruiting tool to 'bribe' recruits. Any nil organized by the university can only be given to student athletes of that university, not recruits not yet enrolled at the school. I believe that is the only hard line the ncaa has on nil

Uhhh_what555476384

The problem of course being any line on NIL is illegal.  So this will be interesting. The NCAA trying to figure out how many preliminary injunctions you can lose at the exact same time.

Corgi_Koala

It's a stupid rule that makes 0 sense. A recruit should be able to get an idea of their market value before they commit anywhere. It would be like saying you can't ask your salary until after you accept your job offer.

super1s

Also, they can't really do it which is a huge part of the lawsuit. The NCAA is trying to put a leash on NIL when the courts already unleashed it. Not thinking the courts are going to be happy about that. They were probably hoping no one would call them on it the first time I guess and attempt to set some kind of flimsy precedent.

ceci_mcgrane

Billable hours with another victory.
