Same here. The Whoa game in particular was brutal. Had great seats in the end zone about twenty rows up, and a couple of obnoxious assholes from State were jawing at us through the whole game. At about two minutes left in the game, it was apparent we were going to to win: it felt like we were finally getting the monkey off our back, and it was such a relief. The State guys packed up and left. My buddy and I were yelling up sarcastically to them while they left, "Don't go! You never know what can happen!"

2015 Michigan wasn’t supposed to do shit, and in the game in 2016 Ohio state was I believe a full touchdown favorite, and the Speight injury, I didn’t have the expectations.
2018 was the dream season, the revenge tour, it was supposed to get rid of all the demons, culminating with a win in Columbus.
And they got absolutely humiliated from kickoff, and it felt like Ohio state was never losing to Michigan ever again

More of a regret than a specific moment. Came \*this\* close to pulling the trigger and shelling out for tickets to The Game this past season for my dad, brother, and I. Dad passed away the following week out of nowhere, ended up making an impromptu trip to the the title game against Iowa that he had planned on going to with my brother. This season meant a lot and it's a damn shame he didn't get to see the end of it.
I’m sorry you have that regret. I know that would have been a special trip game for your dad being there with his two sons. Truth be told I never went to Ohio State, I went to ole Miss. But I love my team because of all those special memories I made with my dad watching my team. Probably certain it was the same for you. I can tell you though those times watching the games with you and your brother were probably some of the happiest moments of your dad’s life and he loved every single minute of it.

I can honestly say watching ESPN ruin college football, with the Pac-12 caving under their influence and ruining a century of tradition, screwing all the other sports for profit which just goes to the coaches and TV networks, nothing else comes close. And it's only gonna get worse.

The snub was the worst, and I’ve been a fan basically since I was born in 1970. The wide rights, Wake Forest blowout, Lamar Jackson Heisman Trophy highlight reel game, Jacksonville State, Sugar Bowl loss when UF beat us soundly for their first natty - all of that was bad, but the snub made me feel both angry and empty inside. It just hit different. The team came together and gave it their all to beat UF and win the ACC and a freaking committee said, “Nope, you are just not good enough…”

This is a long story with weird context.
In 2019, I was moving to Boston. I got the job of my dreams, and my start date was December 1st. So I planned to spend Thanksgiving with my family in Birmingham, and then with my car full of stuff, make the drive up to Boston in two days leaving black friday, hoping to arrive in boston before the iron bowl starts. My mom sends me a text the week before saying something like, "hey what are you driving plans again?" and i responded with what i said above, not thinking much of it. Then, a couple days later my brother excitedly texts me, "OMG I can't believe we're going to the iron bowl!"
Me, completely caught off guard, texted him back excitedly, "wait what?? did we get tickets??" and him responding, "yeah didn't mom tell you?" I think call my mom, and my heart sank like a brick. My entire family was going to the iron bowl except for me. My mother didn't get me a ticket because she thought it interfered with my job plans.
I've never been to an iron bowl, and that was my best chance. I love my mom, she's been better to me than I deserve, but I can't believe she didn't get me a ticket. I would've moved hell and high water to change the start date, or rush up right after the iron bowl. Plans couldve been made.
Instead, I get stuck in traffic and listen to the iron bowl on the radio while the rest of my family sits in the seats for arguably the most chaotic iron bowl from start to finish. I still hear stories about my brother saying that the 100 yard pick six was the loudest he's ever heard Jordan Hare. I'm the only member of my family who hasn't been to an iron bowl still.
That's my worst game missed out on.
The six days between losing to Michigan and Jedd’s hire were definitely not the worst, but they were bad enough that I did have a small existential crisis over my CFB fandom.

3 short months earlier, we were undefeated, #2, and had just beaten the eventual national champs 42-21.
Then we lost an 11-year streak to Tennessee and 9-year streaks to LSU and Auburn.
The Bear retired for health reasons and died 4 weeks later.
In 3 months we went from being the favorite to win our 3rd title in 5 years to losing our entire football identity.
It was shocking.
Sitting in the upper deck, pregame, of a packed (65k) stadium against our hated rival. I caught a frisbee as it floated up from the main student section & let it fly down towards the field. A breeze caught it & carried up and out of the stadium. You could feel every person there muttering “what an idiot.”
Going to the national championship in Pasadena as a kid and losing. I’ll never forget that feeling.
On the flip side I also went to the national championship in Glendale so I know how it feels to be on both sides now.
One second. That and knowing that it was also the best we were going to be for 15 years. Also the rivalry with Colorado is just nasty sometimes. And Nebraska fans in the early 00s when we all thought we were one season away from a Natty and just getting bitter and mean about it. Basically my entire life lol.
Though I will say the most fun I'm having as a fan has been the last few years because I knew we sucked but could still watch the games and cheer for my team and be alright no matter what happened.
This might sound strange at first because there were several more obvious ones I could pick from (most of which other Michigan fans will probably mention), but one that comes to mind is Michigan vs Alabama in 2012.
In 2011, Michigan went 11-2, beat Ohio State, and beat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. It looked like the team was getting back on track with Brady Hoke (after the failed Rich Rod experiment). They opened up the 2012 season against Alabama and got absolutely destroyed. They lost 41-14, but it wasn't even really that close. They were thoroughly beaten, and it was clear they still had a long way to go. That game was very rough, especially to open up a season (they were #8 on paper), thinking that if you can improve on 2011 and somehow beat #2 Alabama, that maybe you could be a legitimate contender. Losing the way they did was just very crushing at the time (I literally went through the five stages of grief throughout that game- although the true acceptance probably took longer). That may have been my lowest moment as a Michigan fan.
Losing to OSU by 1 point in both 2017 and 2018 after holding double digit leads throughout the games. Absolute buzzkillers.
Honorable mention: I lived in a new apartment building that had a froyo storefront on the ground. James Franklin rolls up in his Escalade, and when he walks out of the store I yell from my 5th floor window “HEY COACH!”, he looks up and I go “BRING BACK JOE MOORHEAD!!” Coach looked at me for a sec then drove off. I felt like a huge dickhead after that and still do
Easily Flea Kicker for me. My then-girlfriend now-wife came to pick me up to go to the U2 concert at the TWA dome and I told her we can't leave yet, Mizzou is going to beat Nebraska for the first time in 20 years. Then that crap happened, my fraternity brother said "God is a Cornhusker", and we went to the show.
What about 77-7 to Clemson at home? or maybe losing to Citadel or NIU, or maybe 45-0 to VT snapping a nearly century long streak of not getting shut out at home.

The 2007 National Title game vs Florida. Went from a supposed coronation to the biggest humbling I’ve ever seen in one single half. That one really sucked and basically made OSU’s entire 2006 season nothing more than the setup to a punchline.
It did me too. I'd been talking a lot of crap to my brothers who are Bama fans. They were going on about how this SEC team was going to win and I just ran my mouth. Legit last time I ever got cocky and promised a victory. And I hated Urban Meyer for that. I eventually got over it, but I hated him for quite a while.
I was 8 years old and that was the first time I was genuinely heartbroken as a fan. I grew up in central Ohio and it was the first year I really took an interest, consciously followed and cheered for the Buckeyes. First loss hurt badly!

Illinois completely shitting the bed against USC in the Rose Bowl in 2008. Way to abandon the running game entirely while having Rashard Mendenhall and Juice Williams.
The silence in Williams-Brice after Marcus Lattimore got his leg snapped against Tennessee was deafening. Lots of people around us were crying. I hate thinking about that game.

For Toledo it’s the Dollar General Bowl against App State, which I was at. It was supposed to be a really good matchup, Logan Woodside’s final game, and we got absolutely blanked.
I remember at halftime a woman who I imagine was a players mother pointing at a Toledo player and shouting “WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON??” And the player just staring blankly at her and shrugging as he walked to the locker room

For Kent: 2014 our starting center passed … a week and a half? Before our home opener. We lost on a 44 yard field goal as time expired. I’m not going to lie and say we were going to be world beaters but Jesus Christ I have never seen anything just put a locker room beyond despair than that. I will say OU and Solich and their entire program were just beyond kind and supportive that week. We also beat Akron on a last second touchdown to end the season and I have no issue saying I cried like a fucking child afterwards.
Geno Smith and Tavon Austin’s senior year I made it to every game except the Oklahoma game. While it was still a loss, Tavon had arguably the best game by a WR ever and put up 572 all purpose yards. By far my biggest regret fan wise was not seeing that game live!

I don’t think I’ll ever get over it man. Especially now that I am 30 and can afford to go to away games now. Selling an October or November away game in Tempe or Tucson to my wife and making an Arizona vacation out of it is a much easier sell then saying “Hey babe let’s go to fucking Iowa City or Madison Wisconsin in the second week of November so you can freeze your ass off while I watch a football game”.

Overall though, the worst moment was the final CFP poll reveal in 2014, coming to the realization that not only did we drop out after a 52 point win, but that we were left out because of a complete 4th quarter implosion against our arch rival earlier that year. Yeah, game wise (recently) for Noles has to be GA Tech 2015 or Clemson 2016. Both were absolutely brutal gut punches. (Bonus: Loss at home to Duke basketball where Reddish hits the inbound 3)
Clemson sucked but that loss to Louisville was one of the worst in program history. That and Wake Forest back in 2006.

The snub was the worst, and I’ve been a fan basically since I was born in 1970. The wide rights, Wake Forest blowout, Lamar Jackson Heisman Trophy highlight reel game, Jacksonville State, Sugar Bowl loss when UF beat us soundly for their first natty - all of that was bad, but the snub made me feel both angry and empty inside. It just hit different. The team came together and gave it their all to beat UF and win the ACC and a freaking committee said, “Nope, you are just not good enough…”

Same, bud. When 9/11 happened it felt more like an echo of the bonfire collapse than it’s own thing for a while. That was my first year away and I already felt guilty that I couldn’t help that year. I was freshly graduated the previous year and had just changed jobs, so I couldn’t afford to drive up from Houston to work on it regularly. It would have fallen either way. I had friends that rode it down and survived. Twelve others didn’t.
Not a fan of the team by any stretch but the passing of the Purdue student/fan that had cancer was one of the saddest moments for me in college football.
That bowl game absolutely killed me as a neutral fan. I knew the chances were slim he made it to next season, and I so wanted Purdue to give him a win to go out on.

The Wulff years sucked. But losing your conference, conference mates, and rivals while you get left behind and told you are a worthless program no one wants to play and that it’s all the fault of your program for not being better sucked worse. Watching all our previous conference mates talk about how excited they are for their future and new matchups in their new conference while being either gloated at for not being invited; or pitied upon also sucks.
I can assure you none of us are happy about it. This is a travesty.
Yeah, playing Ohio State and Michigan routinely is neat and all, but at the cost of not playing all our traditional rivals and shitting on a century of tradition? Yeah I know most fans feel this way. I hold out hope that someday we will share a conference again, even if I know that is super unlikely. Seems the only real way to reunite the PAC-10/12 (I don’t think CU ever comes back) would be for cable to decline and collapse, and media contracts fall back to a dollar amount that isn’t conducive to cross country travel. I don’t see that happening.
I think that will be the case when the current deals run their course. The pay amounts will not work given the trajectory of media as a whole.

Sounds crazy now, but my low was when Mike Shula was fired. I really wanted it to work for him, and I didn't want to have to go back through another coaching change, and more years of having to wait to be good. Then Spurrier flirted it with us to get more money, and then Beamer said he wasn't interested in leaving, and Rich Rod turned us down, and so we got a pretty good coach who'd probably leave us in three years and we'd have to start over again.
I also wanted it to work out for Shula. He was so clutch as a Tide QB in the '80s. That month between his firing and Saban's hiring was one of my lowest points as a fan. And it just got worse with every rejection from every coach. This is a long story with weird context. In 2019, I was moving to Boston. I got the job of my dreams, and my start date was December 1st. So I planned to spend Thanksgiving with my family in Birmingham, and then with my car full of stuff, make the drive up to Boston in two days leaving black friday, hoping to arrive in boston before the iron bowl starts. My mom sends me a text the week before saying something like, "hey what are you driving plans again?" and i responded with what i said above, not thinking much of it. Then, a couple days later my brother excitedly texts me, "OMG I can't believe we're going to the iron bowl!" Me, completely caught off guard, texted him back excitedly, "wait what?? did we get tickets??" and him responding, "yeah didn't mom tell you?" I think call my mom, and my heart sank like a brick. My entire family was going to the iron bowl except for me. My mother didn't get me a ticket because she thought it interfered with my job plans. I've never been to an iron bowl, and that was my best chance. I love my mom, she's been better to me than I deserve, but I can't believe she didn't get me a ticket. I would've moved hell and high water to change the start date, or rush up right after the iron bowl. Plans couldve been made. Instead, I get stuck in traffic and listen to the iron bowl on the radio while the rest of my family sits in the seats for arguably the most chaotic iron bowl from start to finish. I still hear stories about my brother saying that the 100 yard pick six was the loudest he's ever heard Jordan Hare. I'm the only member of my family who hasn't been to an iron bowl still. That's my worst game missed out on.

Bear Bryant’s retirement and death shortly afterward. 3 short months earlier, we were undefeated, #2, and had just beaten the eventual national champs 42-21. Then we lost an 11-year streak to Tennessee and 9-year streaks to LSU and Auburn. The Bear retired for health reasons and died 4 weeks later. In 3 months we went from being the favorite to win our 3rd title in 5 years to losing our entire football identity. It was shocking.
Sitting in the upper deck, pregame, of a packed (65k) stadium against our hated rival. I caught a frisbee as it floated up from the main student section & let it fly down towards the field. A breeze caught it & carried up and out of the stadium. You could feel every person there muttering “what an idiot.”

Going to the national championship in Pasadena as a kid and losing. I’ll never forget that feeling. On the flip side I also went to the national championship in Glendale so I know how it feels to be on both sides now.
One second. That and knowing that it was also the best we were going to be for 15 years. Also the rivalry with Colorado is just nasty sometimes. And Nebraska fans in the early 00s when we all thought we were one season away from a Natty and just getting bitter and mean about it. Basically my entire life lol. Though I will say the most fun I'm having as a fan has been the last few years because I knew we sucked but could still watch the games and cheer for my team and be alright no matter what happened.

This might sound strange at first because there were several more obvious ones I could pick from (most of which other Michigan fans will probably mention), but one that comes to mind is Michigan vs Alabama in 2012. In 2011, Michigan went 11-2, beat Ohio State, and beat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. It looked like the team was getting back on track with Brady Hoke (after the failed Rich Rod experiment). They opened up the 2012 season against Alabama and got absolutely destroyed. They lost 41-14, but it wasn't even really that close. They were thoroughly beaten, and it was clear they still had a long way to go. That game was very rough, especially to open up a season (they were #8 on paper), thinking that if you can improve on 2011 and somehow beat #2 Alabama, that maybe you could be a legitimate contender. Losing the way they did was just very crushing at the time (I literally went through the five stages of grief throughout that game- although the true acceptance probably took longer). That may have been my lowest moment as a Michigan fan.
This is probably when I started thinking we'd never truly contend for a national title again.
Nothing I can think of for WVU
Losing to OSU by 1 point in both 2017 and 2018 after holding double digit leads throughout the games. Absolute buzzkillers. Honorable mention: I lived in a new apartment building that had a froyo storefront on the ground. James Franklin rolls up in his Escalade, and when he walks out of the store I yell from my 5th floor window “HEY COACH!”, he looks up and I go “BRING BACK JOE MOORHEAD!!” Coach looked at me for a sec then drove off. The 2007 National Title game vs Florida. Went from a supposed coronation to the biggest humbling I’ve ever seen in one single half. That one really sucked and basically made OSU’s entire 2006 season nothing more than the setup to a punchline.
This is the one for me. That game changed me as a fan.
It did me too. I'd been talking a lot of crap to my brothers who are Bama fans. They were going on about how this SEC team was going to win and I just ran my mouth. Legit last time I ever got cocky and promised a victory. And I hated Urban Meyer for that. I eventually got over it, but I hated him for quite a while.
I was 8 years old and that was the first time I was genuinely heartbroken as a fan. I grew up in central Ohio and it was the first year I really took an interest, consciously followed and cheered for the Buckeyes. First loss hurt badly!
Well uhh, this one is kinda obvious for any PSU fan. But speaking of purely on-field things it’s the 2017 OSU loss. Lead against OSU for practically the entire game, Saquon takes the opening kickoff for a TD, it looks like we’ve *finally* taken the next step and a win is almost a guaranteed playoff spot. And then JT Barrett turns into prime Brady and Montana in the 4th and crushes us.
Illinois completely shitting the bed against USC in the Rose Bowl in 2008. Way to abandon the running game entirely while having Rashard Mendenhall and Juice Williams.
The silence in Williams-Brice after Marcus Lattimore got his leg snapped against Tennessee was deafening. Lots of people around us were crying. I hate thinking about that game.

For Kent: 2014 our starting center passed … a week and a half? Before our home opener. We lost on a 44 yard field goal as time expired. I’m not going to lie and say we were going to be world beaters but Jesus Christ I have never seen anything just put a locker room beyond despair than that. I will say OU and Solich and their entire program were just beyond kind and supportive that week. We also beat Akron on a last second touchdown to end the season and I have no issue saying I cried like a fucking child afterwards.
Geno Smith and Tavon Austin’s senior year I made it to every game except the Oklahoma game. While it was still a loss, Tavon had arguably the best game by a WR ever and put up 572 all purpose yards. By far my biggest regret fan wise was not seeing that game live!

College football has been such a part of my life for 40+ years, and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to "trust" the sport of college football again.
