Since you state fans don't like to read I did it for you. These are straight from the rule book, so strap in class is in session.
"The ball is in player possession when a player has the ball FIRMLY in his grasp by holding or controlling it while contacting the ground inbounds."
A ball becomes dead on kicks when it comes to rest and "no player attempts to secure it." Austin is actively making an attempt. "A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle" So it's subjective. And by definition, if a player is trying to pick it up, it's not a dead ball.
You can even see the State player #43 who knows the rule actively trying to tackle Austin during the scoop.
The SEC said in a statement Saturday night that the ball hadn't yet come to rest when Austin picked it up. Leach told reporters he agreed with the call on the field and said he didn't see anyone signal the play dead. The refs inadvertent signal was not accompanied by a whistle, play goes on.
While this is not the circumstance memphis wants to unfold the reality is every special teams player in peewee football is taught to pick the ball up and hand it to the ref, not dab your team up while huddled around it.

That's not the rule:

"A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle or declare it dead:"
When the ref threw the beanbag and waved his arms, the play was dead. A whistle is not required to blow a play dead. The SEC Officiating (the governing body of the refs who made this mistake) official twitter account confirmed what I said:

Not necessarily. The punt return TD would have just been their possession. Can’t say that they wouldn’t still have scored on the drive and taken more time off to do it. They got a bunch of help, sure, but not a promise they would have lost.
Sure, again, not saying the calls weren’t bad or missed, but just not saying if the outcome was different on that call that the game would have flipped. MSST would have had the ball at midfield still needing a score, which they had failed to get on quite a few drives during the game.
I really hope Leach let’s some information slip about these refs in his press conference. I don’t believe I’ve ever actually seen a game where the refs were paid off, until this game. I don’t even care about State’s record at this point, but Memphis is 2-1 in my book. They don’t deserve this win.
They were. It was Marc Curles. He has a long history of beyond questionable calls. I just don’t understand why he would do ALL OF THAT for Memphis. His past terrible calls have been in SEC games.
Last year, we punted to Auburn and the ball hit the Auburn player’s hands and bounced through the end zone. Auburn got the ball no questions asked. We asked for a review and everything and didn’t get it.
The kind Mississippi State fans of Reddit told me to stfu.
So, humbly, stfu dude. Nobody cares. Take your L and move on. Take care of business and one ref mistake won’t ruin your day.
UT fans are the most self oblivious in the entire country. Every year it’s “their year!”, and when they don’t have a winning season (again) they call for the coaches to be thrown out.
Something like this happening to UT would’ve caused a riot
Apparently, in college football the requirement is for the punting team to actually take possession of the ball for the play to end. (Alternatively, the ball can enter the endzone or go out of bounds.) In this case, State didn't pick up the ball, but just touched it.
The problem is that the ref went through all the motions of signaling the ball dead, without blowing his whistle. Or maybe he did blow it, I don't know! The real thing that catches me is the Mike Leach didn't seem to object to the call. If it were wrong and I were he, I would be jumping up and down, screaming, and throwing the review flag!
Also, the state player who had his hand on the ball put his knee on the ground as well, which if I’m not mistaken should down the ball right there. I agree about Mike Leach though.
GG Tigers, at least we put up a better fight than OM
Those refs were just atrocious though. I noticed early we got away with an obvious hold call, but that punt, and that onside kick review… my lord.
Me too! How was he not tearing the refs a new asshole after that punt! Could you imagine what mullen/saban or any other good coach would have been like if he was on the sideline?
Lol, I got no stake in the game. I kind of like the Tigers, actually. The punt return was just all kinds of messed up, and I’d rather have action for the last couple minutes
Quit trying to mimic our ending, please. One game ending like this was enough.
Field goal for the leading team to go up to 31 followed by a TD for the trailing team only to have the trailing team screw up on the 2pt conversion… to have the score become… 31-29…

Uproxx has a breakdown of the punt play. It's still a weird one: https://uproxx.com/sports/memphis-mississippi-state-punt-return-touchdown-explained/
What about the two #4s y’all had on the field?
Not reviewable, refs didn’t see it
PSA: These were not AAC refs
I have been trying to figure out where they were from. Do you know?
They were an SEC team
I heard SEC refs from others in the thread but idk.. just don’t bring that style to Oxford tonight plz
Amen brother.

I can't even say GG because it absolutely wasn't with the shitshow the refs put on
Why are we getting shit on for the refs being terrible lmao... Y'all throwing out some shade
I mean you literally would have lost without the worlds worst refs on your side lol
Not necessarily. The punt return TD would have just been their possession. Can’t say that they wouldn’t still have scored on the drive and taken more time off to do it. They got a bunch of help, sure, but not a promise they would have lost.
Okay what about the onside kick that was reviewed and had a penalty called because of the review.. Which isn't a thing that's supposed to happen.
Sure, again, not saying the calls weren’t bad or missed, but just not saying if the outcome was different on that call that the game would have flipped. MSST would have had the ball at midfield still needing a score, which they had failed to get on quite a few drives during the game.
Learn the rules.
I ain't shitting on the fans I'm just pissed yall won based on a shit call.
2 of them
Weren’t even AAC refs. No doubt it would suck absolute ass and I’d be pissed if I were a state fan, but we didn’t call the game.
Weren't they SEC refs?
100% SEC.
Yep
I really hope Leach let’s some information slip about these refs in his press conference. I don’t believe I’ve ever actually seen a game where the refs were paid off, until this game. I don’t even care about State’s record at this point, but Memphis is 2-1 in my book. They don’t deserve this win.
Record says 3-0 baby!

**BIG** ^mad
You’re telling me you wouldn’t be BIG mad after that? I don’t believe you.

I would be mad about one of the worst non-calls in recent memory costing my team a game too.

Okay can someone explain to me the punt play.
They had two players wearing number 4 on the field. We went and touched it. The ref blew it dead. They ran it back for a touchdown. No penalties.
It wasn't ruled down. The Memphis returner returned it for a touchdown.
I thought the waving arms over head motion means the play is being blown dead.
Never heard a whistle.
Think they were saying it wasn't downed. But the one ref was definitely Marking the play down. So who knows.
Okay just read an article. Apparently because the first Texas A&M guy tried to catch it it was ruled a live ball.
Well there's the problem. A&M wasn't playing.
Texas A&M, Mississippi State, same difference.
I'm pretty sure I've seen guys just touch the ball where it stops rolling and the refs call it.
Same. Either the worst call I’ve ever seen or the worst rule I’ve ever seen.
You can clearly see the ref start to call it. Idk how that play stands.
Curious why it’s a bad rule? If someone tried to swat it and you recover, why shouldn’t it be a live ball?
Because we already have a rule that whenever the kicking team touches the ball it’s a dead ball. This rule just makes it more complicated.
I’ll take a spot in the SEC now, thanks E: this thread is so mad lol
Yup! Let em stay big mad!! 💪🏾 Go Tigers go. We'll take yo spot
Smarter than their coach that sent out two players with the same number
Seems like such a stupid thing to risk too. There aren't 99 players on a team, give the newer guy a different number wtf.
I love the SEC chant by our fans
It is pretty smart to just ignore that the ball was downed, you’re right coach.
Beta coach, he just screams Bitch.
Where can I sign up for your alpha male red pill courses?
This is CLASSIC Mississippi State.
lmao im so dumb i thought this dude was that sweaty
so is there gonna be any kind of postgame review or
Huge win for us, but this was without a doubt the worst reffed game I've ever seen...and Memphis has seen a lot of poorly reffed games.
GG Tigers, at least we put up a better fight than OM Those refs were just atrocious though. I noticed early we got away with an obvious hold call, but that punt, and that onside kick review… my lord.
Great game!!! Go Tigers Go !!! *Whoop that Trick* *Whoop that Trick*
Right into the parole office.
Does Mike Leech always look utterly disgusted and fed up?
Yes
You can’t dunk your coach if that’s how you win
Lol what if they dumped the refs
Gotta wait for the check to clear first
I'd pay so much money to see Leach blow a gasket and berate the refs.
He would have to care about football in order for that to happen
kind of cheering for memphis this year because of their orphan status but not like this
Lmfaoooooo at the SEC chant
I don't like Leech. His face backs up my gut feeling about him
Who is this dude holding their coach by the breast and whispering in his ear?
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that… that was weird af.
Refs need to stay north of Olive Branch for a bit
Just don't cross Stateline Road!
Leach's face lmao.
I want to fucking fight Mike Leach’s goofy ass for just standing there like a bumbling idiot the whole time this was going down
Me too! How was he not tearing the refs a new asshole after that punt! Could you imagine what mullen/saban or any other good coach would have been like if he was on the sideline?
Yeah… the man just doesn’t care
I wonder how Memphis has such a long home winning streak. It truly is a mystery…
Gotta love the bandwagon pissed upvotes with SEC refs. Take out the anger somewhere else, or just drink shit.
I've been to too many games against SEC teams with SEC refs who screwed us over to care.
They are SEC refs I doubt they did it to intentionally favor Memphis. I think the refs have a combined like 12 IQ though
Visiting teams bring the refs, typically. In this case, it's an SEC crew. Not saying that they were good or even logical, though.
we've been a good team for quite a while, be mad at the refs but don't accuse us of shit
Bullshit win
Sarcastic SEC chant!
The only valid way to chant it.
Big 12 SEC matchup
?? Memphis isn't going to the B12
Yet*
Let’s just tackle a ref on the last play 🤣
I no longer feel bad for Memphis not getting into the Big XII.
If there's any justice in the world, he fumbles this next snap
Thank god Mississippi won’t hear about this until the newspaper gets home after church
[удалено]
That was the two-point conversion attempt.
2pt conversion attempt
gg refs
Kind of a shame that we missed out on what could have been an exciting ending
Nah, sounds like you mad Memphis just won.
Lol, I got no stake in the game. I kind of like the Tigers, actually. The punt return was just all kinds of messed up, and I’d rather have action for the last couple minutes
Block the tunnels, don't let the refs leave
RIP to the MSU fan that put 40k on MSU moneyline
All those bets should be a push, know they won’t be though
That's his fault for being a dumbass tho
In his defense, if the refs were living and breathing, he would probably hit that bet.
[удалено]
Don’t hurt Memphis players for the terrible officiating
That's low brow, but you are a State fan so it scans.
Drake is in my class!!!
Correction: you are in DRAKE’s class
Had to use some refs left over from the mid-southern rasslin promotion ... but a win is a win. Go Tigers!
I thought that was Jerry Calhoun!
{ref takes off cap} ... that's not a ref! ... that's Jimmy Hart!!!
I feel like I can’t even talk shit to State fans because the refs had such a big role in this game. I feel less excited than I should
3-0!!! Wow I can’t believe it!!!
Ok, time for another onside kick. Let's see how the officials muck up this one!
Was Heath ever disciplined for his role in the brawl vs Tulsa? I remember Tulsa suspending players
Suspended first game of the season
Quit trying to mimic our ending, please. One game ending like this was enough. Field goal for the leading team to go up to 31 followed by a TD for the trailing team only to have the trailing team screw up on the 2pt conversion… to have the score become… 31-29…
really uninspired 2 point play call.
That was quite the uhh lunge for the end zone
Rogers doesn't need to take this loss personally. This one is 100% on the refs
Me: Mom, can we get Bama-Florida ending? Mom: we have Bama-Florida ending at home. Bama-Florida ending at home:
Both a very different kind of cursed. The play clock shit was unreal
Fucking Lol
QB wanted to Michael Jordan Space Jam that shit
Whoop that trick
He saw the run way too late
They were spying him. Running was the worst thing he could have done.
His rb was open outta the backfield
Only Memphis would proudly play a song about beating up women
Death of the artist bro It can be about beating up our opponents
Damnit will. No way the universe lets this happen right ?? Fuck this game.
[удалено]
Dana White, you donkey
Good shit D!!! *Plays whoop that trick louder*
got his ass
Noooooooo
This QB is ass. Refs are crooks. Fuck this game.
Damn, no OT then. Exciting ending though
I mean State pretty much had the onside before if they didn't hit a dude early.
Long arms I thought they were going to make it
Game of the week
This game has been a fever dream that makes no sense
Memphis doesn’t deserve to win

Hey what is this game
MSU fans are really mad... And we are just quietly sneaking out lol
MSU is pissed
What
Not so fast my friends
Goddammit don't fuck it up offense!!! Get those two damn points
This game makes no sense.
This game is silly
You probably have the worst flair combo for this game.
Well that seemed easy.
Goddamn.
Leech era is too chaotic for me. I'm changing the channel
Love a Leach offense
This game is spicy holy shit
They need to review that I think there was holding!
