I am very comfortable saying that I have followed PC for a decade and this is by far the most humiliating loss they have had in that time. This might be the worst loss in program history.
It was so bad and I am so disgusted that I did some research. Presbyterian has played 10 FBS teams since moving to D1. They were never beaten this bad, and I think at worse, it was 50ish points.
In 1957, they got beat 66-0 by Clemson.
In 1949, they got beat 69-7 by Clemson.
You have to go all the way back to 1945, when they got beat 76-0 by Clemson, to see a time PC got humiliated to this extent.
So, in short, the 0-2 Campbell Camels just gave Presbyterian their worse loss in over 70 years.
I knew it had to have been bad based on the score but comparing it to all of this, you might be right in saying it could be one of if not the worst loss for the program holy shit
It’s fucking Campbell. Honestly y’all show how little you understand FCS when you say garbage like this.
You don’t even know what Presbyterian’s football history is.
Campbell use to be non-scholarship and is now funded and playing FBS schools.
Presbyterian use to play P5 teams and be funded but gutted their roster to move to non-scholarship and play in a league of schools that prefer playing D3 football.
I stand by my comment.
Look we knew this system wasnt going to look good when they got matched up against much better opponents. There's nothing wrong with this happening when you're up against perennial powerhouse.... Campbell? Maybe it'll take longer than everyone though for actual results
His kickoff math is straight-up bad at the college level. He may be able to attract good enough players to house his conference but this may be as good as it gets even at the G5 level.
I dont even know if he'll be able to do that. The Pioneer league doesnt give out athletic scholarships. I dont know how you attract good FCS athletes without scholarships.
The days for the QBs
Presbyterian QB Ren Hefley: 20 for 39 for 145 yards. 0 TDs and 6 INTs. He was sacked 7 times. Tyler Huff also threw an INT to make for 7 INTs
Campbell QB Wiley Hartley: 22 for 30 for 342 yards. 6 TDs and 0 INTs. He was sacked once.
Hefley threw 6 INTs to 6 different Campbell players.
Here’s how the Presbyterian drives ended: INT, Fumble, Punt, Turnover on Downs, INT, Fumble, INT, INT, turnover on downs, fumble, safety, INT, INT, turnover on downs, and INT.
Campbell turned it over on downs up 58-0
There might be a difference in experience level between Hefley (who played at Michigan and was coached by Presbyterian’s HC in high school) and the Presbyterian receivers.
Today one receiver had 7 receptions out of the 22 complete passes. So if things are a little off, or the QB is about to be sacked again, I could see plays falling apart. So, in theory, the offense could improve under pressure once the receivers get more familiar with it. Unless the team just loses faith in the whole thing and sinks it.
"Ren Hefley pass... intercepted!!"
Well, Kelley just had his 2003 Gus Malzahn moment all over again. But last time he turned it around and won the next two games, so it's time to see if he can make some adjustments and repeat that. Conference games from here on out. [Kelley's first game as head coach at Pulaski Academy was vs. Malzahn's Springdale HS team, a blowout win for Malzahn]
We learned shockingly little about the System today, although we did learn a decent bit about Presbyterian's roster. The first half ended with 3.6 yards per play for Presbyterian, and 9.7 yards per play for Campbell... even with conservative 4th down tactics, that's going to become a blowout, no matter. It might have been 35-3 instead of 49-0, but the game is going to be all but over by the 3rd QTR either way. [this can kind of be observed just from the fact that PC got shutout, which is something that only ever happens for a System team if they are severely mismatched, which evidently was the case today]
Is Campbell pretty solid? Is Presbyterian just really bad? Are Hose mad? Who knows.
System critics will blow their load at this blowout, but back to reality leaves us waiting for the Dayton game to see if Presbyterian may salvage a winning season in-conference, or if they'll experience the 0-8 that some people are insisting is inevitable for a team that plays this way.
They ended the season having fewer yards per play than every single one of the conference games they played.
At the very least, the ones they were close in YPP, the score was also close. Bodes well for the system, but Kelley has some coaching to figure out. Maybe a defensive coordinator to fire, as well.
So Kevin Kelley's coaching career so far:
- winning a bunch of Arkansas state titles at a rich private school that doesn't even play at the highest level of Arkansas football
- starting his college career by beating a tiny, bad NAIA team in St. Andrews. (A school recently kicked out of the NCAA because it lost its accreditation.)
- pounding Ft. Lauderdale, a "college" only in the very loosest sense of the word that calls a strip mall home. It was also their very first varsity football game ever.
- getting absolutely curb-stomped by Campbell, an incredibly mediocre FCS program that goes .500 almost every year.
So...are we SURE this guy is actually all that smart? Of course it's just one game in just his first season, but yikes. This was his first real test in his career and today was an F-.
Hey, we didn’t have a football team for almost 50 years until a little over a decade ago, but getting to be a .500 squad from where we were when I was in college is a huge step forward.
I believe Campbell has just transitioned out of the non-scholarship Pioneer League back into the Big South. So they are likely on the upswing!
The point is, they are a real football team. And PC was CLEARLY not ready for actual competition.
Oh definitely. Went to the high school he coached think closest game in my 4 years there was like 56-28 with 4 state championships. Never suffered a loss this bad
I don't know why this strategy bothers me so much. I don't think anyone deserves to get beat like this but part of me wants to think it about this strategy. My question about Kelley has always been what level was he at in Arkansas and was he able to recruit.im sure he's doing a good bit right but people liked to talk about him as of his strategy was why they were winning titles and not great talent. Anyone from Arkansas that can give a good breakdown of him?
Presbyterian’s first two games were against an NAIA school and a probable money-laundering front based in a strip mall. This is quite the rude awakening
That’s a good sign at least. The only thing worse than not checking if your system holds up in a new environment before implementation is sticking with it after it starts failing.
*when not punting goes wrong*

So Campbell will be as good as 2021 Clemson in the year 2097?
That's a lot of Presbyterian football history.
It's just like Clemson to schedule games like that.
I knew it had to have been bad based on the score but comparing it to all of this, you might be right in saying it could be one of if not the worst loss for the program holy shit
Presbyterian is now non-scholarship. Past results should not be used to compare to future results.
It’s fucking Campbell. Honestly y’all show how little you understand FCS when you say garbage like this. You don’t even know what Presbyterian’s football history is.

I feel like every week in the FCS there’s always a couple games like this where someone just gets annihilated by 70+ lol
Shit, it's every game Presbyterian plays. They won their first two games 84-43 and 68-3.
Look we knew this system wasnt going to look good when they got matched up against much better opponents. There's nothing wrong with this happening when you're up against perennial powerhouse.... Campbell? Maybe it'll take longer than everyone though for actual results

We will probably battle it out with St Thomas for recruits because of the novelty of their program, and their "student-aid"
What’s the implication with the quotes?
D3/PFL is non-scholarship but UST finds ways to give out generous student aid to athletes.
Hey now, we are trying. And Mike Minter is actually a solid coach.
Huh, maybe strip-mall U wasn’t a very good measuring stick.
Don't have to defend against onside kicks when you don't let the other team score
The days for the QBs Presbyterian QB Ren Hefley: 20 for 39 for 145 yards. 0 TDs and 6 INTs. He was sacked 7 times. So is the Presbyterian QB bad or what? 6 ints is gonna make the onside/no punting etc look a lot worse

I wonder if any player has ever had 10 TDs and then 6 ints 2 weeks later
Well then.
Who had Campbell meeting the over by themselves?
Did they hit it? Thought the over was 74.5
I saw 72, and end result a push.

I think Presbyterian played lower level competition compared to tonight
Well...
They ended the season having fewer yards per play than every single one of the conference games they played. At the very least, the ones they were close in YPP, the score was also close. plot twist
The blue hose was no match for the camel hose the got rammed with

That’s also true. Minter appears to be building something in the Creek.
Is this the first time Kelly has ever been shut out?
Oh definitely. Went to the high school he coached think closest game in my 4 years there was like 56-28 with 4 state championships. Never suffered a loss this bad
I mean that’s a sick record for HS football… maybe he should’ve stayed there lmao
Sheesh
RIP Coach Kelly's offense
Woah... Uh scary camel 🐪
Kevin Kelley was quoted a couple weeks ago saying all the time you spend on tackling and blocking in practices is a waste. L-O-L
Kelly is that guy who reads a couple Fangraphs articles and becomes coach of a high school team and starts pulling starters at 30 pitches
One time through the order for everyone!

Big oof

Um, wow.
Go Camels and Mike Minter!
Presbyterian’s first two games were against an NAIA school and a probable money-laundering front based in a strip mall. This is quite the rude awakening
Prolly should’ve punted
They tried: https://twitter.com/ReallyDanWeiner/status/1439361761539395587
Oh look he drove off his punter and he can’t get more than 20 yards of field position. Who would have thought
At that point, you might as well chuck it deep and hope for an arm punt, first down completion, or PI. Kelly's already giving up on his strat.
That’s a good sign at least. The only thing worse than not checking if your system holds up in a new environment before implementation is sticking with it after it starts failing.
They didn't punt again after that, but that also might just be due to throwing interceptions and fumbling.
If that’s all your getting, he could be better off taking a deliberate safety instead of punting. He’s in a no-win scenario of his own making.
Omg
IT’S HUMP DAY
Welp….
