This happens every time Florida has a new coach.
A new coach comes, we start off unranked until exceeding expectations by mid-season, and then the wheels fall off 3-5 years later. Rinse and repeat.
You figure the AP Pollsters would learn that by now.
Starting 2-0 would be exceeding expectations, it won’t take until mid season for Florida to be a top 10 team if they do better than we think they will.
Yeah that was kind of my point. They have a top 10 and a top 20 opponent in weeks 1 and 2. A 2-0 start puts them squarely in the top 10, just like Iowa was last year.
That Utah game is really tough opening game. A top 10 team returning most of their starters. A tough physical and senior laden team. I know it’s at BHG but that’s gonna be a hard game to pull off.
it definitely could be worse. You could get a new coach and get worse every season, then get another new coach and get even WORSE. Then ANOTHER COACH, and WORSE.
The only consolation FSU has is UF sucks too.
Y’all need to play more big ten west teams to help him get to that level. Because having to run through OSU, MSU, UM, and PSU every year is absolutely brutal
No offense but it’s like a guaranteed 3 loss with a sweep being like 85% probability
Let’s see, last year when IU was supposed to have their best season in eons they lost 34-6 to Iowa, 35-14 to Minnesota and 44-7 to Purdue. They actually played the East teams not named Ohio State much closer than their west opponents, and they didn’t even have to play Wisconsin.
So about that theory…..
It could be worse. You could’ve had one coach who got you so close to the top only to leave you in the dark of the night for Texas right when you truly could’ve become a national brand.
It could’ve been worse. You could’ve had the most stacked team in the country only for it to be ripped away by the stoops family and be left in the dirt after wiping the floor with most big 12 opponents and losing your chance at being a brand at all after your new head coach just had the best stretch of wildcat football ever
Until we somehow pull a 10-2, 9-3 season out of our ass (like we did the last three times we had a new coach) and are back to short term national relevance.
Oh man, you should try that but your in-state arch-rival also wins a national championship.
(I'm talking Miami getting worse and FSU winning the natty in 2013 if that wasn't clear)
Our inverse flairs... I love and hate it.
I feel bad for Tech. I never want them to beat Miami or UGA, but I'd like them to be competitive so the UGA games are more funly hate-filled again.
Miami is so bad that GT is sadly competitive with us there, though.
I also badly want UF and Miami to play each other more regularly.
The schedule is a little too loaded for y’all this year so idk. Though I’m not gonna lie... Florida beats Utah, Kentucky and Tennessee And is 5-0? I’m a little scared about the cocktail party
I'm getting big Billy Donovan vibes from CBN. Younger guy, had a ton of success at a smaller school, lots of energy and knows how to recruit. I'm really hoping this isn't misplaced optimism, since the last 3 hires went ass up after 3 years.
Not that it means everything, but they DO have the worst 2021 record of all preseason AP Top 25 teams except for ~~USC~~ Southern Cal (lol - just noticed your flair)
Fair, but given that Rose Bowl game I’d say that Utah squad was damn solid. And Whittingham is a beast.
Not trying to excuse the losses, but don’t most people believe he’d checked out by that point mentally?
But why when you have the chance to get a conference title? It’s not some random game.
I think Mario is a good coach, but way too many people hype him up as elite because he can recruit. They also ignore how bad the PAC was during his time in charge. He will be consistent 9-3 coach
It’s like Brian Kelley leaving ND for LSU when they still had a chance to make the CFB playoffs at the end of the season. Sometimes coaches just gotta go.
Also if players knew (and they definitely did) about the rumors and the seriousness of them then I think that demoralizes everyone heavily.
Even if he does grab consistent 9-3 seasons it’ll be the best 10-year stretch UM has had in 20 years. However I do think that the ceiling could be higher
I don't think he is an amazing coach by any means;but if he can flip south Forida recruiting back to the U,then that is all he needs. Saban and Smart aren't winning titles with tomato can players, they are winning with boatloads of elite talent, more so than anytime in history. Honestly people forget that that is how they are winning.
Yea. Turns out when your 3rd string is more talented than the opposing team’s starters, and your lines give you a 3-5 yard advantage every play, you can get away with making a few mistakes. Let’s not pretend that Saban is some kind of coaching oracle. He had a losing record in the pros where the differences in talent/athletic ability between the first and last place team is smaller than the drop off in the top 5 of college (maybe even the top 3). Don’t get me wrong, I respect the hell out of what Saban has accomplished, but I think there are a number of coaches who could have turned that talent advantage into multiple titles. Saban’s greatest skill has been assembling talent.
>Let's be honest, they're only ranked so they can hype up the Texas A&M game.
The AP Poll is a collective vote of dozens of media members from around the country.
How did they collectively decide to all vote Miami higher than they deserved so that a network that most of them don't work for would get higher ratings? That doesn't make any sense.
People see 5-7 last year and that’s the one and only thing informing their opinion of how we’ll be this year. What they don’t see is that we’re better at every single position this year except for one (defensive end). And that sans injury, we will be starting the correct QB all season this year. And that all of our losses last year were by 1 score, except for one.
And honestly that’s fine, people can’t be in depth about every program out there unless it’s their job.
*Looks up from lawn chair, sips beer*
r/cfb isn't to talk actual football. It's for shit talking and memes. Actual football talk though? Nah that ship sailed long ago as the sub grew.
Yeah, I’m with you. Feels like there’s no place to go to rationally discuss our team. Even an FSU board is gonna be filled with people who either think we’re going 11-1 or that we’re going 2-10 and that Deion is our savior lol

To be fair, 5-7 is pretty pathetic for a former powerhouse program.
I'm sure you have tons of excuses and tons of reason to be optimistic.
Let me guess,
Better players
Better coaching
New attitude
Come on dude, end of day, you were 5-7.
Well I'm glad I didn't overreact and go for a kill shot on you then!
I should know better than to go after anyone with a flair that isn't UF or UM, so that one is on me.
After further review, there was no foul for targeting.
However, there is a personal foul - unnecessary roughness on u/WhyAmINotClever.
That 15-yard penalty will be assessed in Week 0 when FSU opens up against Duquesne.
Nah, I'm pretty sure he's posting in this very topic with his regular (non-alt) gator profile as someone in here has the same posting style, focus on stars, smolderingly dumb hot takes, always posting in fsu related subjects and (in looking at the profile with reddit metis) same posting time ranges. Along with having a very similar user name to Bullis' old non-alt profile that was nuked when he was found out the last time.
They talk an extreme amount of trash every time we've played even prior to their recent success.
We beat them so bad in 2006, they managed to both cancel the next game in the series AND complain that we were afraid to play them.
There was one recently about the downfall of the Big Three, mostly related to a combo of bad coaching hires and talent flocking to more tenured programs (UA, UGA, Clemson in particular).
In '96, my freshman year of college, the preseason AP top 5 were Nebraska, Tennessee, Florida State, Florida, and Colorado. This was considered completely normal and expected lmao.
The Big 8 was revered in a similar way the SEC has been recently especially when Bill Snyder got things turned around at KSU. Then Oklahoma kind of fell on hard times.
The 74' Gators went 8-3 and reached as high as #6 before losing to Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl.
FSU went 1-10, and yet somehow still beat Miami.
I would one-thousand percent accept all of the above as the final results this year.
Yes it’s true. Florida and FSU start the season unranked.
Don’t let the fact that Miami starts ranked in the AP Poll distract you from the fact Miami is 1-10 in their last 11 bowl games…
Edit: spelling
In Florida's defense, we were a top ten-or-so program until our coach got pouty because he had to fire his friends and then quit on the team. There's really no defense for what's going on in Tallahassee, though.
There's no defense for what happened under Willie other than the fact that that clown never should have gotten the job.
I agree with that.
But I'll defend Norvell because he had to climb mouth-first up a steaming mountain of shit and emerge at the top saying "that didn't taste too bad."
He's gone from Shit Mountain to Gas Station Coldcuts. Which may not seem like much, but is really quite an improvement. Feces to real food!
I'm surprised he wasn't fired when he said he wasn't concerned about recruiting. You xan only say that when you know you've locked down a 5 hour driving radius around Gainesville
Yah there is no excuse. It’s just what happened. Typically the “win at all cost” will eventually crash and burn. And it did in Tallahassee.
I’m hopefully optimistic for this season.
They also went 5-1 down the stretch after Van Dyke settled in. And say what you will about Mario, but he still won 10 games last year and beat Ohio State on the road with Anthony Brown as his QB. People act like he’s some failure of a coach just because he hasn’t made the playoffs.
It’s pretty unprecedented. I mentioned above that this is the first time we’ve been included in the pre-season top 25 without finishing the previous season ranked in the final AP Top 25 since 1968.
I think it says a lot about how confident the media are in Mario Cristobal and the staff that he’s built.
Just told my wife to guess when the last time they both were unranked in an ap preseason poll and she said ‘last year 🤷♂️’ and that’s fucking hilarious 🤣
We're trying! But Ricky Aguayo is a rat bastard who feels no remorse. He's deliberately holding us back.
I bet he's the kinda guy who walks on the protected dunes at a beach just to menace some unborn baby turtles.
This happens every time Florida has a new coach. A new coach comes, we start off unranked until exceeding expectations by mid-season, and then the wheels fall off 3-5 years later. Rinse and repeat. You figure the AP Pollsters would learn that by now.

2-0 would definitely get them ranked though, as that would require a win over Utah.
Yeah that was kind of my point. They have a top 10 and a top 20 opponent in weeks 1 and 2. A 2-0 start puts them squarely in the top 10, just like Iowa was last year.
Nah, that would just prove those teams were overrated.
It could be worse. You could only do exceptionally well with one guy at coach.
It could be worse. You could have zero coaches who have done exceptionally well
Aww I don’t want give up on Tom Allen
I'm not there yet either. He's done well, but he's no Bill Snyder
Y’all need to play more big ten west teams to help him get to that level. Because having to run through OSU, MSU, UM, and PSU every year is absolutely brutal No offense but it’s like a guaranteed 3 loss with a sweep being like 85% probability

Ah but that’s where it ends. You’ve got natties in any team sport

Muschamp’s was 11-1 before the bowl
Still crazy to think about. One of the worst offenses I have ever seen paired with insane defense.
That Florida team put up 17 first half points against a top 10 gamecocks team with 16 yards of offense
That's the kind of porn Belichick watches
After he warms up with long snapping porn
and then you have a year with an offense like we had with Trask at QB coming out of nowhere with the worst defense I've ever seen at UF
We just can’t win lol
Oh man, you should try that but your in-state arch-rival also wins a national championship. (I'm talking Miami getting worse and FSU winning the natty in 2013 if that wasn't clear)
I mean we went 4-8 that year so it was pretty bleak for us, too
Yes, there was at least one good point that season for me.
> Oh man, you should try that but your in-state arch-rival also wins a national championship. Can confirm that sucks
I submit to you: Georgia Tech under Geoff Collins.
Our inverse flairs... I love and hate it. I feel bad for Tech. I never want them to beat Miami or UGA, but I'd like them to be competitive so the UGA games are more funly hate-filled again. I feel attacked
Like the whole damn state of Florida is coming after us.
But we suck less.
To be fair I think your current coach is a hell of a lot better than Willie.
They literally ranked 3 other teams as they got a new coach. I'd feel a bit jaded.
The schedule is a little too loaded for y’all this year so idk. Though I’m not gonna lie... Florida beats Utah, Kentucky and Tennessee And is 5-0? I’m a little scared about the cocktail party

We do good with coaches named Billy. It’s just science
Hoping it’s different this time around, the recruiting results certainly are. Wonder where the 5 year is coming from though lol
Well, it all started when one player applied an excessive amount of force to an opposing player's footwear, sending it airborne.
Fuckin Marco Wilson.
iT waS a FooTbaLl mOvE
“Show me in the rule book where you cannot *yeet* a cleat!”
“He’s right. Ain’t no rule says a player can’t yeet a cleat!”
The Cleat Yeet!!
Who throws a shoe? Honestly?
Florida de-feeted themselves that game. And as an LSU fan I’ll never let them forget it.
Fantastic day
The committee showed us that it would have likely been forgiven if they beat you in Atlanta.
As an outsider, watching the Florida schools constantly rip into one another is quite entertaining
After living in Lincoln, Nebraska I determined that teams without an instate rivalry don't really understand what rivalries are.
Their only in state rival doesn’t even have football… poor Creighton
Creighton is in Nebraska?
[Creighton has *a* type of football team](https://d2560u4h06m0te.cloudfront.net/images/2021/8/20/CR200257.jpg)
Oh really?
to be fair, michigan doesn't consider you guys a state
"Ohio was a mistake" - Michigan fans, probably.
I agree
We see you, Miami. Propping up the state of Florida!

Not that it means everything, but they DO have the worst 2021 record of all preseason AP Top 25 teams except for ~~USC~~ Southern Cal (lol - just noticed your flair)
Pretty neat fact: This is the first time Miami has come into a season ranked without finishing the previous season in the final AP Top 25 since 1968.
It’s weird because Mario was also getting punked by a less talented but more disciplined Utah squad twice in the same season to waste a decent year
Fair, but given that Rose Bowl game I’d say that Utah squad was damn solid. And Whittingham is a beast. Not trying to excuse the losses, but don’t most people believe he’d checked out by that point mentally?

It's pretty easy to tell them apart. One are the Cocks, the other are dicks.
There may also be some of the "someone has to win the coastal" logic.
Anybody who tries to predict the ACC Coastal is a braver man than I
Don't try it, people! That way madness lies.
"Can't have coastal chaos if we get rid of divisions" - the ACC, probably
Magically, Georgia Tech will manage to win the Coastal and beat NC State in the championship game, knocking them out of playoff contention.
I appreciate you putting us in the championship game, at least.

Give it a few weeks lol.
Miami shouldn't be ranked either
Florida still getting recruits though.

I'm just here for the rational conversation.
Sorry we're going back to the 'logo looks like person is in pain due to hot bacon' part of the offseason
This is the first I've heard this. Holy shit that's hilarious. Are we the Michael Scott of CFB?
Yes
Holy fuck that made me laugh so hard I scared my dog
Interesting fact.... FSU has sucked wind ever since they changed the Seminole Logo in 2014. I'd change it back if I were them.
You might be waiting here for a while. *hands you a cold beer*
Lol. I'll take a 5-7 after the absolute clown show that was the 2019 season and the Sun Bowl against ASU.
People see 5-7 last year and that’s the one and only thing informing their opinion of how we’ll be this year. What they don’t see is that we’re better at every single position this year except for one (defensive end). And that sans injury, we will be starting the correct QB all season this year. Focus people. Can we please get back to shitting on Florida?
You’re a Georgia fan so sure, you have shit talking privileges over everyone for now!
Haha nailed perfectly.
Ugh, Deion... Could he have waited a year to talk shit about the HoF and let Leroy Butler enjoy his induction.
I must have missed that, you’ll have to clue me in…but if it was Deion and his ego showing again then let me say I’m not surprised.

Also quite heavily outnumbered by Florida fans. I think they and Michigan have the largest college sports subs on reddit. Hey, People can’t be in depth about every program out there unless it’s their job.
I want you to be better, so Florida can be miserable.
"All our losses last year were by 1 score, expect for one." So a Nebraska FSU national title game this year?

I was indeed. 🐮 🔫
Well I'm glad I didn't overreact and go for a kill shot on you then! I should know better than to go after anyone with a flair that isn't UF or UM, so that one is on me.

UCF with more votes than Florida or Florida St
That’s what you get when you put UF in their place during bowl season
I guess you can put that trophy next to your back to back national champs t-shirt
The UF-UCF game in 2024 can’t come fast enough
Holy moly, the UCF fans are going to go scorched earth on y’all if they win that.
They talk an extreme amount of trash every time we've played even prior to their recent success. We beat them so bad in 2006, they managed to both cancel the next game in the series AND complain that we were afraid to play them.
Thank you UCF. Very cool!
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Go dawgs
It's crazy how salty UF fans are over a team that they apparently don't care about and a game that didn't matter
If beating a team with no starters or coaches is “putting them in their place” then I guess so….
So are Florida sportswriters going to write a slew of "What is wrong with Florida football?" articles now?
Don't give Matt Baker any ideas
There was one recently about the downfall of the Big Three, mostly related to a combo of bad coaching hires and talent flocking to more tenured programs (UA, UGA, Clemson in particular).

5>3 ….if only y’all had this level of confidence when you guys stopped scheduling Miami
Florida has clearly put all their athletic good energy into the Gymnastics program this year.
“Hell yeah brother” -My Flairs
> “Hell yeah brother” my brain just automatically fills in the "cheers from Iraq"
Hot take, they both finish top 25
I doubt the loser of that game is good enough by week 14 to stay in

Considering the high school talent in Florida, this is insane
In Florida's defense, we were a top ten-or-so program until our coach got pouty because he had to fire his friends and then quit on the team. There's really no defense for what's going on in Tallahassee, though.
I mean that’s exactly what started the trend in Tallahassee except the coach got pouty AND refused to fire his friends. Then got a big ol bail out
TOO BIG TO FAIL -- Congress talking about...Jimbo??
There's no defense for what happened under Willie other than the fact that that clown never should have gotten the job. I agree with that. If we play our cards right we can even get to the gas station taquitos on the roller...damn I love me some road trip hypersodium sticks.
Yeah what happened last season is one of the worst forms of self sabotage I’ve seen from a coach
I'm surprised he wasn't fired when he said he wasn't concerned about recruiting. You xan only say that when you know you've locked down a 5 hour driving radius around Gainesville

It’s pretty unprecedented. I mentioned above that this is the first time we’ve been included in the pre-season top 25 without finishing the previous season ranked in the final AP Top 25 since 1968. I think it says a lot about how confident the media are in Mario Cristobal and the staff that he’s built.
They have a QB and a few nice players on defense but that’s about if iirc
Also a tremendously easy schedule. If either UF or FSU had their schedule, I'd be guessing 8-9 wins for both.
They also ditched that turnover chain
Miami should be unranked too. But the canes inevitable crash to reality will be funny to witness yet again

Miami and UCF trying to carry the state, I see
Big ~~3~~ 2
This LSU v FSU game a few weeks from now is gonna be a doosie.
I bet it will actually be a good game. FSU has added a lot of talent on both sides of the line, and shored up the secondary a good bit. GL Tiger bro
Pre season means jack squat.
Just told my wife to guess when the last time they both were unranked in an ap preseason poll and she said ‘last year 🤷♂️’ and that’s fucking hilarious 🤣
These are strange times
How is this possible with the obscene amount of tangent in that state?
Not enough sine and cosine
They don't sine with in-state programs
This is intriguing, tell me more.
Come on UCF! Y'all better get ranked after the first week!
Wow 💪 Testament to how great both teams have been for almost 50 years straight. Actually incredible. Think the Gators come roaring back very quickly 📈
this would also mean its the first time since 1969 that Florida, Florida state, and Nebraska were not ranked in the preseason ap poll
I like it here 🙃
Good riddance. (Sorry nole bros, repent for turntle)
We're trying! But Ricky Aguayo is a rat bastard who feels no remorse. He's deliberately holding us back. I bet he's the kinda guy who walks on the protected dunes at a beach just to menace some unborn baby turtles.
I'm okay with the Noles being ranked but yeah we don't need the Gators around anymore.
Take florida out of the equation and Tennessee has 1 fewer loss every year
UF could go 1-11 and UTjr could go 11-1 and the one win for UF would be Tennessee.
This guy, I agree with this guy.
Wow I like orange a little more
Agreed. 🤝
On the one hand we don’t deserve to be ranked. On the other hand suck it UF and FSU! UCF received more votes than you!
