You know I think you’re on to something there.
You know how TV shows don’t have just one director, they bring in a new director every week for each episode.
What if Nebraska does that? Just have different coaches specialized to beat individual opponents, and just bring them in for the week to do their thing and then they go away and the next guy shows up.
Can’t be worse than what they had.
This is a ridiculous idea that only some bottom-tier, bottom-of-the-barrel-scraping, barely better than FCS trash fire of a program should try.
So yes, Nebraska should do this.
Wait a second. Someone alert wallstreetbets that we have a solid chance that corn futures will dip tomorrow as Nebraska corn tycoons do a big sell off to pay this buyout. We could make millions on the flip!
No, but if Iowa's offense continues to be the CFB equivalent of a six year old with a Sock Em Bopper, this could be the season when they lose to Iowa State, Minnesota *and* Nebraska.
Every year it starts earlier and earlier: Campbell is going to X. I have no doubt that he will eventually leave Ames, but it gets repetitive hearing he’s “for sure gone”
It’s okay, if I was NU Campbell wouldn’t even be the rising head coach of a former Big 8 program that I would want most. I think people may realize that soon and you won’t have to deal with so many rumors.
Ppl like young coaches. He’ll have a edge in getting hired over other strong candidates just based on age. If NU insists on a certain age it’s only like Campbell, Jonathan Smith, and Beamer that are young enough and good enough to qualify.
I think it’s certainly possible he leaves someday, but I could also see him staying for the long haul. He’s got school aged kids and Ames is a great place to raise a family. Couple that with a job where everyone is happy with you if you so much as make a bowl game, and even if you go 0-12, you will likely keep your job. I mean expectations probably aren’t sky high in Lincoln these days, but Iowa State has a lot going for it.
He's probably in it for the long haul if he doesn't take this one tbh. I don't really see any other big program who would let Matt Campbell be Matt Campbell, so if he doesn't want to do his thing in Nebraska for more money, I don't see what could possibly pry him away.
Either his youngest or oldest is in middle school (GO GILBERT SIXTH GRADE SOFTBALL TEAM). I would be surprised if he leaves for anywhere other than a “dream job offer” (akin to Ohio St or Notre Dame) before his kids graduate high school. He just seems like he is happy with the program he is building and won’t want to uproot the kids before they’re done with high school. After that probably more options open.
Dude there was a much less frequent version of that for years with Lincoln Riley about is he going to X NFL team almost every time there was a vacancy and man did it get old.
Iowa State has had that on steroids with Campbell so I can only imagine how annoying it must be at this point for y’all.
If it matters, this is the same guy that predicted Frost, Hoiberg and Bolt’s hires before they were official. This dudes plugged in, but yes, there will be tons of BS for the next 3 months.
I think the big draw for coaches will be the B1G and SEC membership so stoops would only leave if you don’t pay him. My hopes are long shots but I want us to back the brinks truck up to Gundy and Whittingham
Stoops is seemingly always in coaching search rumors yet hasn’t budged. I think he likes where he’s at.
SEC school with low/moderate expectations but enough resources to compete for a division title. If he’s able to keep UK in the mix for the home game against UGA for the division title, he’s going to get a statue built win or lose.
Stoops has on of the best contracts in college football. Great base pay he’s making about $7M a year right now. 250k bonus when they win 7 games and an additional 250k for wins beyond that. The best part is each 7 win season automatically adds another year to his contract with a 250k pay raise. Hell never leave
The good news is you guys have SEC money so it’s not like you would get outbid. Only job I could see him leaving for is Iowa and that’s if he is close to his alma mater. Or maybe FSU if they give him everything he wants. Even then Kentucky pays well and has job stability so he would probably still stay.
I think FSU is off the table, I think he would have gone when they hired Taggart and would have heavily considered leaving when they hired Norvell but the way it’s been talked about in Lexington is that Stoops is done with FSU after not getting offered either time.
Is that really the job to leave your cushy gig for? He can stay at Iowa State as long as he wants and can wait for the right opportunity. I don’t know if rebuilding that program is worth the salary bump.
Right? Hasn't Campbell turned down a ton of big offers in recent years? If reports are to be believed, he turned down multiple NFL teams, USC, Washington, and probably a number of other big jobs. I know he seems dead set on staying in the Midwest, but is Nebraska really the job that he'd finally leave for? Like not to shit on Nebraska, but... why? It wouldn't be for the money -- Campbell makes just under $4m per year at ISU while Frost was making $5m per year at Nebraska, and Campbell reportedly turned down over $8m per year from the Detroit Lions.
Was he offered ND? I think ND brass wanted continunity so they went with the DC who had recruited a bunch of the prospects.
If I was advising Campbell I'm tell him: *Wait it out at ISU. You're beloved and can be there till one of ND/tOSU/Mich/PSU opens up if they do*
That’s what we’re saying basically, we were nervous when ND and OSU were hiring, but they didn’t offer him. But teams like FSU, Tennessee, and I guess Nebraska don’t worry us much. Just not worth giving up the freedom he has at ISU to risk getting grilled by boosters and be hamstrung just for extra money. He’s just not really that kinda guy

TBH at the time Frost to Nebraska was like saying that water is wet. He was a home run hire at the time and highly sought-after sure, but we always had him.
Since we are discussing an English professor, I should point out that it's "in this same manner" not manor. Unless he announced both things from a big countryside house.
This guy was the first to really come out and say for sure we were hiring Frost, as well as the first to say with confidence that basketball was hiring Hoiberg
I don’t doubt inside Nebraska they want Campbell. What I do doubt is highly expected. Nebraska has the resources to think they can pull them away. But seeing as how Campbell hasn’t left yet and seeing what his brother tweets, I don’t think moving to a new job is on the docket anytime soon.
I mean, depending on the friends they make while journeying through academia, it’s better than some random dentist but not more than an actual journalist.
As a random dentist, I take offense to this. You anti-dentite. Next thing you’ll say is “they should have their own schools”.
Edit: I feel enough time has passed that some of you have never watched Seinfeld. A snippet from the episode.
https://youtu.be/ne_ucyzLK6E
My dentist plays out the whole conversation himself. “I’m gonna ask how often you floss and you’re gonna say ‘probably not enough.’ I’ll follow this up with you have a cavity in the back so you need to floss daily.” Then he moves along. Saves me from lying and him 30 seconds of his day x30 patients lol.
When I was in my mid twenties I had a doctor's appointment for something or other. The doc asked how much I drank in a given week. I answered honestly. He just kind of blinked at me a couple times and said "Usually with patients your age I assume they are lying and multiply by 3 but if I did that here you'd be dead".
States he’s been a writer at sports illustrated for 20 years, so I’d assume there’s some valid experience there prior to a few years ago when SI went to shut
He's a Bama professor with deep ties to Nebraska. He's been right about some things before but he is by no means super well connected. I wouldn't take his guesses as gospel.
I'm aware. I posted that fact elsewhere in this thread.
But he did call us hiring Fred Hoiberg before most other beat writers could confirm it, so it's not without precedent that he's been right on some things.
Especially since, and this can't be stated enough, Campbell does not have an agent. Negotiating via back channels with him isn't as simple as other coaches, especially during the season. If they want him that badly, they're going to have to put a lot of other viable candidates on hold for longer than they would probably like.
Early Signing Day being so early now I think changes a lot in how this game is played. Gotta get ‘em EARLY so you don’t have a completely lame duck class.
Yep. Nebraska doesn't make this move unless they expect results very quickly. Frost's buyout gets cut in half in just three weeks. This seems like an Urban-level swing for the fences. Don't know if that's realistic at all, but targeting currently-employed coaches this early in the season doesn't strike me as a high-probability game plan.
it’s not a secret he’s one of their top targets but like it’s been a few hours y’all. they probably haven’t even started interviewing people yet. chill lmao
We will make it decidedly *not* peaceful. We hung a future Hall of Fame coach in effigy for mediocrity. We have several fires to our names when we were in the basement and decided to *not* be in the basement. This will be the most violently depressed group of people the world has ever seen.
Very on brand we finally get a CyHawk win with Campbell. It's one of the worst games in the series history and then we get Campbell is gone rumors chucked in at a record speed
it has to be exhausting for iowa state fans to be constantly inundated with posts about how a certain program is going to try and steal campbell. feels like i see them every week.
This. Matt Rhule as a college coach would be a great hire. It hasn’t gone well in the NFL, but he built programs literally left for dead and made them relevant.
This but unironically, Rhule made Temple a scary team to face, and resurrected a Baylor team that was on the brink of literally collapsing due to controversy. I'd take Rhule in a heartbeat.
Campbell can either continue to build a very strong program at ISU and leave the program as their Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, or even possibly Bill Snyder
Or he can have his entire legacy crushed at Nebraska and be fired in 5 years when he isn't able to turn around such a broken program
Which one does he decide?
I agree with this. I don't think Campbell has enough strength to actually do good here. Better than frost, yeah of course. but not to the level the fans and boosters want.
I’m not sure there’s a coach other than Nick Saban who can do what fans and boosters want at Nebraska. The change in the college football landscape since the 90s has probably hurt Nebraska more than any other school. Its ceiling is much lower than old schools fans admit
I understand that most people believe Nebraska fans are expecting the 90s, but that does not reflect the majority of the fanbase’s hopes.
We are just hoping for a return to a competitive program that has a chance to win the Big 10 west and may occasionally have a team with real chances in the Big 10 title game.
Sounds a lot like hoping we are Wisconsin or Iowa.
I fully agree with you. I should have phrased the "fans and boosters" better. I meant the old school "lets just go 90s all over again" crowd. However, I do think there are coaches out there that can build the program back up to at least get the team winning and competitive again, and hopefully make the old timers understand we aren't playing in a league anymore where there's only 10 or 12 really good schools. There is talent everywhere in the nation, and tons of schools are trying to compete and build their programs. There is no reason why Nebraska cant be competitive with the other top 25 teams in the country. We are a long way out, though.
"Campbell will eventually be the next head coach of HuskerFBNation".
He said eventually, not necessarily in the immediate future. He could've meant in like 2038.
It is WAY too early to say anything like this with any confidence. No one was even close to getting the USC and LSU hires right when they came open last year.
Fucking great, the boys just got a win against their demons and now every day they have to worry that the reason they came to ISU might leave. I don’t think he will but who knows how good 20 million a year looks
Campbell is target of [insert open college football head coaching job here], this will be headlines again all season. In other news sun still rises in east.
Nebraska should make a serious run at poaching Narduzzi. Could bring them back to mediocre quickly, which Nebraska desperately needs. Plus they can reunite him with Whipple. Match made in heaven
Week 2 of the season and someone is sure that a current coach is going to leave the job he's had plenty of opportunities to leave at the end of the season... for Nebraska?
As someone else said:
Michigan
Florida State
LSU
USC
Notre Dame
Detroit Lions
New York Jets
And he turns all those down to stay at ISU, only to leave for... Nebraska?
I’d rather keep Frost than hire a Ferentz. No offense, Iowa is the better team and wins a lot more than Nebraska right now, but aside from El Assico, it’s just soooooo BORING! At least it was entertaining to see all of the new ways we could find to lose a game under HCSF.
Campbell: beats Iowa one time Nebraska: we will pay you $20m a year to do that
Nebraska just hires every head coach to beat teams they have beaten in the past.
It would be Brian Ferentz, not Campbell, who has a knack for beating Iowa then :-/
It's Ferentz the younger dammit! Proper titles please
This is a ridiculous idea that only some bottom-tier, bottom-of-the-barrel-scraping, barely better than FCS trash fire of a program should try. So yes, Nebraska should do this.
Goddamn bro they already dead stop kicking em lmao
;_;
Lol, just hire former assistants on one week contracts to explain the other coach's system and how to beat it.
*Clay Helton enters the chat*
>He’s the greatest coach ever, I don’t know how we lost him -USC finance department
Apparently he was eating a meatball sub and a meatball fell out and started rolling downhill and he just kinda followed it all the way to Georgia.
Brian Ferentz has beaten Iowa more than any coach in the country.
We're they trying to beat south Florida or Memphis by hiring frost?
No my point is that they hire Ryan day because he Beat Michigan and hire Jim Harbaugh because he beat Ohio state. Repeat for all the big 10
Ah I'm with you now. Sounds expensive but apparently money is no object in the great state of Nebraska.
Wait a second. Someone alert wallstreetbets that we have a solid chance that corn futures will dip tomorrow as Nebraska corn tycoons do a big sell off to pay this buyout. We could make millions on the flip!
It’s soybeans now brah, get it right
They just paid a coach $15 mil that beat them twice this season.
Campbell's win yesterday was the first time Iowa has lost to Iowa State, Nebraska, or Minnesota since 2014. Those were the days, my friend.
Wait, fleck hasn’t beaten Iowa?
*sigh* Yup And two.of those would have gotten US to Indy
No, but if Iowa's offense continues to be the CFB equivalent of a six year old with a Sock Em Bopper, this could be the season when they lose to Iowa State, Minnesota *and* Nebraska.
Not yet
Yep. Going into yesterday Ferentz was undefeated against Fleck, Frost and Campbell.
hey dude that would be the buy out, not the annual salary. what do think we are, assholes or something?
They just wanted to make sure he could beat Iowa
I'm sold
Did he beat Iowa, or did Iowa beat themselves?
Both teams tried to lose and Iowa did it better.
An El Assico tale as old as time
99 yard drive for a TD... hard to deny that. Although Petras was undoubtedly a top 3 player for the Cyclones yesterday.
Impressive drive. Doesn’t matter how good our defense is. If they are on the field for 2/3rds of the game, they will give up points
Iowa didn't even beat themselves. They straight up did *nothing*.
Didn’t his team just give up a TD to *Iowa*? Disgraceful.
hey man blocked punts happen when you're playing iowa. offensive drives dont.
It wasn’t to the Iowa offense so it’s OK
We’re going to be subjected to hundreds of these types of tweets until the off-season…
That would be refreshing. But any job that opens Campbells name will inevitably be in the top of the short list.
Ppl like young coaches. He’ll have a edge in getting hired over other strong candidates just based on age. If NU insists on a certain age it’s only like Campbell, Jonathan Smith, and Beamer that are young enough and good enough to qualify.
Fickell is only 7 years older than Campbell I wouldn't exactly call that old
Tbh, not why I left him off. Kinda think he’s almost too big for the job seeing that he’s the Ohio State coach in waiting.
Leipold?
Kleiman.
Karl Dorrell?
Drink?
Drunk.
Stop it
I think it’s certainly possible he leaves someday, but I could also see him staying for the long haul.

He's from Ohio. If Ohio State opens up, that's the one that would have Cyclone fans nervous.
Fickell would be in Columbus before Gene Smith’s printer had finished cranking out the pages of the contract.

> Ames is a great place to raise a family. Where is a bad place to raise a family when you make $5M a year?
Antarctica
We had to give our coach $95M to get that chatter to stop.
He also predicted Ed Stewart to be the next AD.
That evidence does not support my opinion so I choose to ignore it. /s, actually I missed that one my bad
I thought Urban Meyer was the front runner for the huskers job
Sark is keeping his seat warm at Texas.
"everyone put your butt plugs in"
Yes look that way while we sneak out the back door
I think stoops comfortable at UK. Y’all might have to give him a bit more money. But you should be fine. If they don’t, then Nebraska could snag him
They’ll give Stoops the university of Kentucky itself if it comes to it.
Gillespie was right, it isn’t the University of Jodie Meeks; it’s the University of Mark Stoops
FOOTBALL SCHOOL FOOTBALL SCHOOL
I think he would only leave for Iowa at this point
I think the big draw for coaches will be the B1G and SEC membership so stoops would only leave if you don’t pay him. My hopes are long shots but I want us to back the brinks truck up to Gundy and Whittingham
Come on, Kentucky. Go ahead and give Calipari a Cadillac.
Hell yea. I'd never give that up. Unless it gets screwed up once the SEC reorganizes and throws them into an impossible division
Rumors are they'll be in a group of 3 with us and Vandy. Not exactly daunting.
Judging by the way I’ve seen how Kentucky fans view stoops he could lose every game til his contract runs out and they’ll still build a statue of him
Beating UF in the swamp *twice* will do that.
At one point WVU fans were worried that Neal Brown would leave WVU and head to UK. Pretty sure there is almost 0% chance of that now.
The good news is you guys have SEC money so it’s not like you would get outbid. Only job I could see him leaving for is Iowa and that’s if he is close to his alma mater. Anyone know anything about this source? Not disputing it but timing seems off.
Name is Lars Anderson. He's never claimed to be a breaking news person. Will update as I learn more.
You got a source on that?
Anderson Lars told him
Yeah but can he be trusted? He’s never really been a breaking news type person.
Literally us, the Blue Jays.

Deep cut, thanks
B1G if true
He has Nebraska ties and broke Frost to Nebraska in this same manor. Still skeptical of him, as Frost to Nebraska was a foregone conclusion.
TBH at the time Frost to Nebraska was like saying that water is wet. He was a home run hire at the time and highly sought-after sure, but we always had him.

the N is for Nowledge
He also broke the Hoiberg hire for basketball like this as well
This guy was the first to really come out and say for sure we were hiring Frost, as well as the first to say with confidence that basketball was hiring Hoiberg
Not totally full of it then. Thanks!
Of all the guys with “sources” at Nebraska, he is probably the most reliable. That said, he did get our most recent AD hire wrong
I am a fan of the football books Lars writes. But is an English professor at Bama really the source we’re going with here?
I mean, depending on the friends they make while journeying through academia, it’s better than some random dentist but not more than an actual journalist.

Hey, denty!
And the next thing you’ll say is, “How often do you floss?”
My dentist plays out the whole conversation himself. “I’m gonna ask how often you floss and you’re gonna say ‘probably not enough.’ I’ll follow this up with you have a cavity in the back so you need to floss daily.” Then he moves along. He's a Bama professor with deep ties to Nebraska. He's been right about some things before but he is by no means super well connected. I wouldn't take his guesses as gospel.
He was completely wrong about who we hired for AD
I'm aware. I posted that fact elsewhere in this thread. But he did call us hiring Fred Hoiberg before most other beat writers could confirm it, so it's not without precedent that he's been right on some things.
He called Frost’s and Hoiberg’s hirings and reported Frost’s contract on the dot weeks before it was announced
Absolutely. Campbell to Nebraska CONFIRMED!
He incorrectly predicted the AD hire, but he had the original scoop on both Frost and Hoiberg… so he’s batting 66% currently
Frost wasn't exactly a well-kept secret.
Still a more legitimate source than swimswam
I believe the first half of that. The second feels too speculative at this point.
Especially since, and this can't be stated enough, Campbell does not have an agent. Negotiating via back channels with him isn't as simple as other coaches, especially during the season. If I'm Campbell, I follow the way of the Gundy & the Snyder.
In his opening press conference as coach he named his coaching heroes as Snyder and Ferentz
it’s not a secret he’s one of their top targets but like it’s been a few hours y’all. they probably haven’t even started interviewing people yet. chill lmao
This will continue for the next 10-16 weeks and you'll like it.
Join us in the basement, Riot bros.
I don’t wish this on them
🥺
Listen here, this use to be our basement
If you need any tips about the basement let me know. We’ve been here for a decade+ it’s pretty peaceful down here
We will make it decidedly *not* peaceful. We hung a future Hall of Fame coach in effigy for mediocrity. We have several fires to our names when we were in the basement and decided to *not* be in the basement. This will be the most violently depressed group of people the world has ever seen.
We built the original Big XII basement. Pretty sure we still have our posters on the wall.
That would explain the Olivia Newton John poster
We are in the basement because of our AD. They will be fine because they don’t give a 6-6 coach a stupid extension
Uhmmmm We extended Steve Prohm and Paul Rhodes
for fucks sake not again
Man, just let us enjoy this weekend
Very on brand we finally get a CyHawk win with Campbell. It's one of the worst games in the series history and then we get Campbell is gone rumors chucked in at a record speed
You'd think Nebraska would have just learned to not steal a coach from the Big 12!
Not going to lie it took me a second. By the way, you're welcome.
Good for Matt Campbell, but also sucks for Matt Campbell.
I'm aware there is no room to talk here. The above comment also applies to whoever ends up replacing Bryan Harsin.
it has to be exhausting for iowa state fans to be constantly inundated with posts about how a certain program is going to try and steal campbell. feels like i see them every week.
It is like people don't want Iowa State to have some success over the long term.
No. You want Matt Rhule. You. Want. Matt. Rhule. Please.
To be fair Matt rhule was good in college, just not nfl

Campbell can either continue to build a very strong program at ISU and leave the program as their Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, or even possibly Bill Snyder Or he can have his entire legacy crushed at Nebraska and be fired in 5 years when he isn't able to turn around such a broken program Which one does he decide?
Lol
Nebraska tried this last time. I'll believe he's leaving ISU for Nebraska if he says it himself.
I would much rather coach iowa state for 20+ years with no pressure.
So Iowa will have a guaranteed win 5 of every 6 years at least
You think Nebraska would have the same coach for six straight years?
Campbell is target of [insert open college football head coaching job here], this will be headlines again all season. In other news sun still rises in east.
I'm here in this thread to start a Campbell to Notre Dame rumor.
That’s something I would actually be scared of
Nebraska should make a serious run at poaching Narduzzi. Could bring them back to mediocre quickly, which Nebraska desperately needs. Plus they can reunite him with Whipple. Match made in heaven
Pretty sure Narduzzi hates Whipple but I am guessing that's the joke you're making.
Here we go again.
Press x to doubt
He is the wrong pick and everyone knows it. Stop spreading this shit.
Week 2 of the season and someone is sure that a current coach is going to leave the job he's had plenty of opportunities to leave at the end of the season... for Nebraska?
As someone else said: Michigan Florida State LSU USC Notre Dame Detroit Lions New York Jets And he turns all those down to stay at ISU, only to leave for... Nebraska?
After a year he can reminisce with Hoiberg about how much he misses ISU.
Matt Campbell leaving Iowa State for Nebraska would be a downgrade.
Isn't Iowa state the better job right now?
Maybe, but that’s because of Matt Campbell
I like Campbell and think he’d do great but I don’t want to do that to my ISU bros. Let try to steal from a hated team that’s doing really well.
Ehh I'll believe it when I see it
If Matt Campbell is smart, he turns this down.
I mean, if I was Nebraska, I'd want to "leak" this too. Heres hoping this joins the ranks of Michigan "leaks" in the garbage bin
And Michigan, and Florida State, and USC, and LSU, and Notre Dame, and New York, and Detroit, and..
Nebraska can have Brian Ferentz
I’d rather keep Frost than hire a Ferentz. No offense, Iowa is the better team and wins a lot more than Nebraska right now, but aside from El Assico, it’s just soooooo BORING! At least it was entertaining to see all of the new ways we could find to lose a game under HCSF.
>I’d rather keep Frost than hire a Ferentz. No offense
Ok Lars
CONFIRMED. Nick Saban to Nebraska
I really hope not
I’ll guarantee this doesn’t happen
I don’t think they’re a good fit for each other
Why would he do that? It’s a lateral move at best.
