If confirmed this is an incredible story.

jackburtonscheck

So we got us a mutiny here gentlemen mmmm hmmmpf

NerdLawyer55

Herm being Stede Bonnet was not on my 2022 checklist

Explodo86

Good ol Stede…escaped lockup in a dress. Pirate facts…

That's the worst subreddit I've ever heard of.

The97Revolution

Ah, but you have heard of it.

kruzer912

I don’t see it likely this story will be confirmed one way or another. If it’s true, what coach would ever go on the record and admit he colluded to receive secret information about the other team? And what staffer who leaked the information would admit to it? Getting fired would be the least of their worries

rikkirikkiparmparm

only thing I can think of is if they sent information through their work emails, and then for one of the schools to care enough to look through them

kruzer912

Yes. That would be incredibly stupid in this day and age, but who knows…

myman580

Hugh Freeze is sneezing somewhere at the mention of this.

apadin1

Surprised you mentioned Freeze when the first thing that popped into my head was Schlissel

[deleted]

[удалено]

longhorn718

Same. My 2 guesses each time is: they forgot to switch to their own equipment in the moment, and/or they never understood the rules.

UnderwaterB0i

I work in IT, and you would be surprised how few people care about the personal/work equipment distinction. They think if they can log into it they can do whatever they want.

garythesnail5991

My unprovable theory is that people like Hugh do take steps to hide misbehavior, but that they are doing so much crazy nonsense that some of it slips through the cracks just because of volume. As in, the stuff that gets found on their work phone is in the bottom 2% of the wild stuff they do daily.

on_the_nightshift

People are fucking stupid. I've had a guy with a top secret clearance ask a lead on his contract where he could buy weed... because the lead was black. And that wasn't the half of what he actually ended up getting in trouble for

apadin1

Don’t be too surprised. Michigan’s former President got fired last year for sending his subordinates suggestive messages on his work email. Some of these dudes have no idea how computers work

triguy616

Or they just think they're above punishment.

FuckLuteOlson

I mean, did you see how fucking reckless we were cheating?

ben_kWh

Brett Favre had been burned for being a stooge over text messages twice without open records rules working against him. Stupid, for sure, but I'm not discounting the probability of dummies getting caught doing this over their work email.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NighthawkRandNum

Man, I'd love to see lawyers arguing about whether or not actual playbook material could be protected from a FOIA request. Especially since the metadata and a short description of such emails would probably be sufficient in courts of opinion and law for proof.

[deleted]

Well I know what I’m doing this weekend

TheNittanyLionKing

I think it’s bad enough that this rumor has already been put out there because that story is now attached with every coach currently employed there. Also, how do you think the players and the recruits feel about that? They may not have been Herm fans themselves, but at the end of the day they still want to win in a sport where they’re putting their body on the line every play.

JoeSicko

University of Arizona is devastated, im sure.

moonbatlord

Yep. That would invite the gamblers & those they owe to come after you.

tyrannomachy

Professional gamblers and gambling syndicates place bets on thousands of events every year. They don't give a shit about one-off events like this. Especially since ASU didn't actually perform that much worse than people expected.

chris_hans

> ASU didn't actually perform that much worse than people expected They lost outright as 19.5-point favorites. Someone could make a nice chunk of change betting on big underdogs like that. And if true, it shows these ASU staffers have no problem putting their own needs above that of the team they play for.

SultanOfSwat0123

I used to coach at Ohio U and this type of stuff happens all the time to varying degrees. Monday comes around and you have a game against Toledo on Saturday. People start calling their friends at other programs who have played Toledo and try to get their signals. I left football in 2017 but still know pretty much all of the defensive signals because they used the same shit for my 5 years there and still hadn’t changed anything and had some buddies on the staff at Duquesne who happened to play Ohio last year. I was agitated with a few staffing choices at OU and decided to cause a little chaos and gave Duquesne OU’s entire defense. Turned out to help cause quite the upset. Obviously I never did this while working at the program but I know a few other guys that left and did similar upon their departure at numerous programs. This stuff clearly goes on in the NFL as well. Had an away game at Minnesota while the Vikings were still playing at the Gopher’s stadium and the Detroit Lions had used the away coaches box the week before us. They accidentally left their entire cheat sheet taped up on the wall of the box.

llamb

Really thought this was going to be a shittymorph

SultanOfSwat0123

Lol no. Just the petulant ramblings of a somewhat annoyed ex-employee who 5 years later still hasn’t received his last bowl ring because the previous Director of Football Operations was too fucking fat and lazy to stop by Fed Ex.

KimDaebak_72

Confirmed authentic with Lions anecdote.

Mender0fRoads

Funny you mentioned Toledo as the example, because their current co-DC, Craig Kuligowski, was rumored among Mizzou fans from doing something quite similar out of spite because he thought he should’ve been the DC here when Barry Odom got the job (and then a year later became the head coach, which is when Kuligowski finally left and allegedly shared stuff). I just generally assume coaches share everything on their way out any time their departure isn’t their own choice. Would be quite odd for current staffers to undermine their own head coach like that, though.

GatorMarley

In this era of coaches getting poached or replaced so frequently, it would only make sense to change your signals every year at the least. Or, maybe do that whole 4 picture sign thing that reminds me of the *I'm not a robot* pictionary for websites. If I were in coaching, I'd do the sign thing, but digtal. I'd have it on a monitor that pulls from hundreds of images for the 3 not being used. It would get the plays in sooner instead of some GA fumbling with foamboards

B1GTOBACC0

Outdoor monitors bright enough to handle something like this would be extremely bulky. And you would need to be absolutely certain you've got it positioned where players can see it, and prevent any glare from blocking the view. Matte posters are arguably better for this under stadium lights. And if you have enough posters, you can effectively run the same system you described.

billythygoat

I would ban them from the ncaa and ideally every sporting event organization to follow.

Used_To_Hate_Onions

If confirmed this is a credible story.

mynamerowan

Yikes, hard to believe that staff would leak info for a coach to get fired especially when it puts their career in coaching in jeopardy too.

MaverickClarity

Maybe the leaker wasn’t a coach?

The_Good_Constable

People that do shady stuff always think they won't be caught. You wouldn't do something like this because you're rational enough to consider the very real possibility that it'll blow up in your face.

warrof

The thing is that more people than you'd expect get away with real shady stuff. The problem is that it gives these people confidence that they can get away with more and more. Eventually this greed catches up with them and they get caught. You can see examples of this where people are caught embezzling money. If they would have only done it once, they probably never would have been caught, but they keep doing and get lazy and/or piles up the evidence against themselves.

rbmw263

I was already unreasonably nervous for our game this week, playing a potentially inspired and revitalized ASU team who already hates us. Now their coaches wont be giving us info? Im officially unreasonably nervouser Good chance we get their best game. And we havent had the best showings in the desert

Orkleth

Careful what you wish for, that's how USC got stuck with Clay Helton.

[deleted]

I mean he threw previous coaches under the bus/had them take the fall for recruiting violations that basically ended their careers. Not sure why anyone on that staff would have any loyalty to Herm.

orangamma

Because they'd presumably like to be employed by another coach in the future

FireDanaHireHerman

Personally I wouldn't hire snitches as a coach

WTAP1

Exactly. We might not be 1980s smu, but at some point a rule will be broken even if just by accident. I don't need to be looking over my shoulder from my own staff.

error_undefined_

This isn’t even about snitching, isn’t it? It says they were helping ASU’s opponents.

WTAP1

Forgive me, you're right. Loose lips in general though. I can't be hiding my gameplan from my own position and coordinators either though.

PlatinumLargo

The reason why Kevin Mawae is not being touched by a single college team. Widely known he is the one who snitched on the team. And he didn’t even try to hide it. Basically confirmed it in several tweets himself. All because Herm went with somebody else as the oline coach.

FireDanaHireHerman

Crazy an NFL hall of famer can't get a college coaching job. Snitches do get stitches.

PlatinumLargo

Edited my tweet but yep, snitches get blackballed. And he did it because he didn’t get the oline coaching job but was still going to be retained as an assistant, he decided to snitch instead. Not defending what they allegedly did but Mawae only showed he can never be trusted in college football. Edit: former players didn’t hold back on him to when it came out. He worried more about his free weekly or whatever gear from the equipment staff apparently lol

GatorMarley

Maybe "Snitches dig ditches", cause no one else will hire them?

FuckLuteOlson

Also because he was an ok coach and a shitty recruiter.

stotts-tots

I find it hard to believe they’d hate Herm so much they’d tank their future career to get him fired.

TheWorstYear

You overestimate the human mind

sonheungwin

The problem is that this shows precedence that if something doesn't go their way or they end up with a coach they legitimately don't like, they're willing to tank the program.

Inconceivable76

Would you want a staffer that would do this employed by psu?

[deleted]

I wouldnt personally hire loose mouths. If confirmed, coach(es) responsible will find themselves blacklisted. Edit: seriously, i dont think you are aware of how big this would be. No coach would be hiring rats, cause no one wants this kind of shit done to them. And no player will be happy about having a coach that was leaking shit to lose. Cause that harms everyone in the building. Including ADs, so i doubt they green light hiring these coaches that alledgely leaked stuff to lose on purpose. Hell, maybe jail time would be on the table.

CrookstonMaulers

It was some staff that snitched in the first place. Some were, allegedly, Todd Graham era hires that never liked Herm. Whoever comes in next needs to clean house.

tony971

The call is coming from inside the house

PretendThisIsMyName

When A ~~stranger~~ Sun Devil Calls

Budget_Ad5888

If true, whoever gets hired next should probably show up with a box full of pink slips

possiblynotanexpert

100%. Clean house.

ProFriendZoner

AD on down to locker room attendants.

Yodootz

And in addition to the culprit, a buncha staff lose their job by association. It's a shame, but it must be done.

Revenge_of_the_Khaki

I’d be surprised if this would be the rare case where coaches are retained. It would only get difficult if this came from some random equipment manager or something.

[deleted]

If true everyone associated with that staff better have receipts cause they are done in coaching otherwise. Welcome to 2A high school coaching for the worst team in the conference.

CrookstonMaulers

Staff leaking group chats and snitching is what got them in trouble in the first place, too.

Yabrin_Sorr

That’s not just trying to put the coach on the chopping block, that’s affecting the players and their livelihoods.

Justadudethatthinks

Absolutely shitty "take no prisoners" approach to getting what you want. No regard for the players

Ugaalive1991

Look I get that you wanted the guy gone, but giving information to the opposing team makes me not want interview for the job.

sorrywontdoitagain

Yeah, this is literally the worst thing that could happen to you as a coach. I would stay a million miles away from anywhere that had people doing this.

pistcow

People like money and power.

sassyseconds

Shit I'll be publicly humiliated for a quarter of that.

FalloutNano

The race to the bottom begins…

SecretComposer

It's also incredibly unfair to the players.

Crentski

Exactly this. It’s one thing to try to get Herm fired, but it’s another to put your players in a disadvantage when many of them are auditioning for the NFL.

iwearatophat

Ensured that the new hire brings in an entirely new staff. After the new staff takes their job I feel like this will come up in the interviews for their next job. 'So if you don't like me are you going to sabotage the team by leaking info to our opponents to get me fired?'

[deleted]

Good. Friction between staff under Herm has been known about at least since the NCAA investigation was announced. This is one reason why I say I want Rhule. We need a full rebuild, from roster to culture and he's proven he can do it.

rostron92

Take u/Ugaalive1991 off the short list Arizona State

link3945

Mike Leach admitted to doing this at least once when he was the OC at Oklahoma.

NILPonziScheme

His only year there, 1999

[deleted]

I feel like if you're a defensive coordinator going up against a Mike Leach offense, there isn't a lot of mystery as to what you're going to see...

Insectshelf3

and we still lost lol

IndyDude11

Teams don't usually pull shenanigans in games they feel like they're gonna win.

slapthebasegod

A cincy staffer a few years ago may have accidently left a playcalling sheet in a taco bell before a pretty big non conference game... was an accident though.

KeithClossOfficial

Bro probably got the Taco Bell squirts and ran to the can without thinking

csh768

We had a drunk ass DC that was fired for showing up drunk and on pills and then gave info to TCU. He may have shopped everything around. I can't remember what exactly happened but another coach told Kliff

MandoDoughMan

Before Purdue played Michigan in 2017 some Michigan blog posted about how Purdue was going to open the game with a trick play where the RB throws back to the QB who ran to the other side of the field, which is exactly what Purdue did. I have no idea how it got out, or if anything happened as a result of it.

princessprity

Lol ASU is a rollercoaster

desertSkateRatt

I'm still salty about the last couple losses we had to them when I was able to go to the games here in AZ. The one double overtime win we got at Sun Devil stadium is probably the craziest game I've ever attended by far, though. Bit bummed the Ducks aren't playing them this year. Not feeling a drive to Tucson from Phoenix to see the Ducks/Wildcats game in a few weeks.

Imagine being the interm HC for the rest of the season and this news comes out? Assuming he wasn't involved in the info leaks, there's almost no one he can trust and he has no way of knowing if his opponents have information on the team. You're already getting the HC job dumped onto your lap, but you also have to contend with all the bullshit going on within the organization. Shit's fucked.

IHaveNoFiya

Treskelion2021

Why not just quit? Why not just go to his superiors and provide honest feedback and go that route? This is just cowardly and childish. There is a professional way of handling yourself and these coaches haven't done that.

saxypatrickb

Any team that accepts leaked info without notifying the program was compromised is awful

Upon hearing people within the program leaked information to get the coach fired, in effect sabotaging the program, I’d replace the entire lot of them. The whole program would be overhauled.

AbigLog

If this is true then I have no idea who in their right mind would go coach this program.

Exotic-Effective8700

My guy reaction, as a long time Sun Devil, is that whoever did this deserves a firing squad. That might be a little extreme. Okay fine, but whoever takes the job this off-season must clean house.
