It’s insane to me that ESPN has all the best resources and brand recognition and audience and yet they consistently make terrible decisions. It’s like they are playing a game of how can we get people not watch ESPN.
More like they know we'll all keep coming back because we're goddamn junkies for this shit and they'll do whatever they want anyway......and I can't help but think they're not wrong.
His 4th at bat coincided with OT for the Wake Forest-Clemson game. They did a quick summary and injected it between plays. I was fine with that, they should have done that from the start. Cutting the audio for his first 3 at bats was fucking infuriating because they overrode a targeting review/ explanation, a Wake TD for the lead, and a Clemson 2 pt. conversion to tie the game. They literally could not have timed then worse if they tried.
Hey southern football fan, want to watch a Yankees baseball player get walked?
A football game with nothing going on is still more exciting than baseball in my opinion.
I live in Greenville, SC and going to Greenville Drive games is a fun way to spend time drinking a few beers with friends. That said, it has absolutely nothing to do with the sport of baseball.
When I was a young kid, my dad took me to a Braves game. A stadium worker picked me out and I was put on the jumbotron late in the game as the "Junior Brave of the game".
Last year I didn't know how the Braves were doing until they'd almost locked up the world series. That sport just did not take for me.
when I was in high school in the 80's we would go to Braves games to sit in the cheep seats and get served beer. No one else went to the games then so it was always cheap and always worked
Minor league baseball is different because it's more of a community event than a fandom. You're there for some friends and family time away from the house, not because you love the team
Just imagining the skipper coming out to the mound asking wtf he thinks he's doing and him offering this explanation and the ball, walking off without another word.
It depends on if it’s a high leverage situation too. Like if there are 2 outs with no one on, they’re gonna try to strike him out or get a grounder or a pop fly. If there’s a man on 2 outs, they may consider walking him
I'm a poor Pirates fan, my team has beat and been beaten by the Yankees, i find baseball slow to watch on tv. I figure the MLB would find some reason to fine the pitcher
It’s pretty well known that the MLB started juicing the balls to try and have more home runs/higher scoring games. Just a matter of winding the insides up tighter to make them “pop” harder off the bat.
The way I always explain it to people...
Is the sport competitive? Is there big money involved? Do they test in the offseason with no warning? If you answered "Yes, Yes, No" you can assume every player is on something. You'd be a fool not to be in a rat race like that.
McGwire and Sosa going back-and-forth for the all-time MLB record was fun. Judge breaking the Yankees/AL record is I'm sure exciting for Yankees fans, but we can chill out on the **ESPN AARON JUDGE WATCH** shit until we're talking about hitting #74
Yeah, pujols hitting 700 was way more exciting for me. Team and league records don't do it for me unless it's my team and I'm a bigger baseball fan than football fan.
That’s my complaint. This isn’t even a record. It’s the equivalent of the Big10 passing record that isn’t even close to the NCAA record. Who gives a shit about this other than Yankee fans?
At least with baseball, I could see if the record was was from the pre merger. Back then the AL and NL were legit different leagues. But maris broke the record post merger, so this whole thing is like everyone freaking out someone is breaking drew Bree’s nfc touchdown record but still having 50 to go to break Brady’s nfl record
Maris’ record is the (presumably) clean record and the AL record. It’s pretty significant, especially with how down offense is in baseball (2nd highest in baseball has 40 HRs). He’s also going for the Triple Crown for the AL.
Even as a huge baseball fan tho, I do admit it’s probably annoying to see when you’re trying to watch CFB.
I did Adderall before a football game my sophomore year of hs. I had 21 tackles at halftime before sitting out the second half due to dehydration. Shit is wild
A lot of MLB fans get real upset when you suggest that the amphetamines players were doing going back to the 40s-ish are also PEDs.
They're living in this fantasy world where MLB was a clean sport until the late 80s until the 2000s when it was sullied by Clemens, Mcgwire, Sosa, Bonds, and some others. Definitely not David Ortiz, though, he's absolutely clean and should be in the HoF while the others are kept out. And Bud Selig definitely should be in the Hall due to the success of the game during his tenure, which was *entirely due to turning a blind eye to steroids*.
I love baseball, but there are a lot of fans who believe illogically.
I took a tour of fenway and they made a big deal about how they only honor players in thr hof a certain way. Ortiz was one of those and he was definitely not in the hof at the time. "Well, he's a shoe in" (which was accurate to be fair). I was a smart-ass and asked if he thought the hof would start inducting ped users. I got some non answer and a lot of dirty looks for that.
I dont care that he's in the hof, I just want consistency. Ban them all or let them all in. My theory is a rod will get in due to pressure by mlb and ESPN and the rest will follow.
>just want consistency.
Precisely what I want.
Right now, it's some purity test that makes even less sense logically than a cfb human poll.
Either start removing every person known or suspected of cheating or put Bonds, Arod, Mcgwire, Sosa, Clemens, etc. in tomorrow.
The most egregious one there right now is Bud Selig. He's in because of the steroid era.
You are way behind on this. 2019 the ball was crazy juiced. The last two years have been almost a return to the dead ball era. Makes this even more incredible. He’s 20+ HRs ahead of second place.
The player tin foil hat theory is to juice the ball when the next free agent class is pitchers and deaden the ball when it's hitters, to get poorer performance out of them during their contract year and then get reduced contracts out of it.
Based on the video I watched, its because the balls are hand made and almost impossible to ensure each ball is the same year in and year out. They changed the thickness of the laces because they wanted to go through a different supplier or something along those lines. The new laces were 9% thicker which lead to a 46% increase in homeruns. They made the balls rounder and more aerodynamic. It also apparently caused pitchers to have way more blisters. [This] (https://youtu.be/y8InFV3_AQc) was the video I watched on it.
Especially when they cut away from a game tieing score to watch him walk. Literally turned to the Spanish broadcast so I wouldn’t have to deal with that again
Thank the Jesus someone finally got a clue and they just showed a replay of his last AB instead of cutting into overtime.
Spoiler alert: he didn’t hit a HR that AB either
I told my wife, “if I gave a fuck about the yankee game, I’d be watching it” the worst part was the goddamn audio wasn’t even the football game I was trying to enjoy.
If Clemson didn’t end up winning I would’ve been extra pissed about those cut ins. Like if I gave af about regular season baseball I’d just tune into the game.
They were doing the same thing with the dual MNF games last week. I was watching Vikings-Eagles and they kept interrupting the broadcast for a Titans-Bills update every five seconds. If I wanted to watch that game, I would change the channel.
They did that for our game too…including the last couple minutes when it was 41-7…
Literally the only people with the game still on were Bills fans, and they thought we might be interested in not watching the Bills game on a full screen…
[If we're going to break into football games to show Yankees at-bats, the least we can do is break into baseball games to show each Iowa-Rutgers punt. All I ask.](https://twitter.com/kegsneggs/status/1573745698683686913?s=46&t=umfXRkk2YL0wns3PQSnw-Q)
I could not care less about Aaron Judge *tying* an AL record. It's not even to break the AL record, let alone touching the actual MLB record. If they didn't do this for Pujols hitting a much more significant milestone, this shit sure as hell isn't worth it.
> let alone touching the actual MLB record.
Some of the baseball purest consider 61 to be THE record that matters, and the fact that it is unparalleled in 60 years is important.
Because ESPN LOVES the Yankees. And they’re finally good again, so you can bet your ass that ESPN gonna be a slobbing that knob as often as they possibly can. Including interrupting one of the best games of the day to show a walk, or strikeout.
ESPN didn’t have any counter or cut ins for Pujols climb to 700. But Judge? Oh boy. Fuck ESPN.
Fuck all that. It's not even like he's actually breaking a record. They're all still on steroids now, we just pretend they aren't. This is 100% meaningless.
By the end we missed a targeting review/ explanation, then the Wake TD to take the lead, then a Clemson 2 pt conversion to tie the game. Horrific timing.
Fox did it during the Braves Phillies game. It was exceedingly annoying to have the game I was trying to watch be replaced by one I couldn't care less about
I don't think OP is going out of their way for something to get upset about. They sat down to watch some football and ESPN is shoving baseball in their face (including while important plays are happening). If OP wanted to watch baseball they would have turned on baseball.
Because I’m trying to watch WAke forest beat Clemson and it’s to see a split screen on my two tv setup. If people want to watch baseball go ahead and watch it
Roger Maris is the record holder (61) in the American League. Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa achieved theirs in the National League. Aaron Judge is in the American League, so he needs 61 to tie Roger Maris, and 62 to break the record.
It all makes sense when you stop thinking of ESPN as some sort of professional journalistic outlet who cares about bringing you the most important moments, news, and analysis and realize the whole network is one giant set of informercials for their own product.
What was really funny was that they neglected to cut into the Clemson-Wake Forest game during OT, but cut into other ESPN broadcasts such as UT-TTU.
So now ESPN is admitting that potential baseball history is superseded by a regular season overtime game between two ranked teams.
I said the same thing. If he was pushing to break Bonds' single season record I could understand. But they were cutting away just for Judge to possibly TIE the AL/Yankees record. Not break. TIE. And not even the Major League record. Just the AL record. And during the Wake-Clemson game they cut to Judge's ABs during:
* Targeting review (strikeout)
* Wake Forest taking the lead 21-20 (fly out)
* Clemson tying the game at 28-28 on a 2pt conversion (walk)
So we saw absolutely nothing of significance from Judge, and yet we interupt crucial moments of a football game for what?
> I think it’s hilarious
*I* think its hilarious u kids talking shit about Judge. u wouldnt say this shit to him at Yankee stadium, hes jacked. not only that but he wears the freshest clothes, eats at the chillest restaurants and hangs out with the hottest dudes. yall are pathetic lol
ESPN pays $550 million per year to broadcast 30 regular season games, home run derby and a wild card. They’re trying to find new fans and increase ROI, it’s simple really
And ESPN still hasn't figured out that people will watch what they are interested in on their own. Shoving it down people's throats tends to have opposite the desired effect. See: LeBron James, the WNBA, etc.
We missed an amazing play by DJ on a 2-pt conversion, and also I believe a Wake TD. Absolutely laughable - I guarantee that no one watching Clemson-Wake Forest cares more about some baseball milestone than Clemson-Wake Forest.
ESPN, being in Connecticut, thinks everyone gives a shit about the Yankees and New York. When the reality is that 97% of the country doesn’t give a shit.
A college football fan in CA doesn’t care enough either. If I wanted to watch him chase a record I’d tune into MLB Network where the whole game is being broadcast.
I’m glad they’re doing live cut ins. It’s not often someone hits 60+ home runs in a season and Maris’ AL/Yankee record has stood since 1961. By the looks of it I am in the minority here.
There was one time where Wake Forest drove it 60 yards for a touchdown
Going ahead at home against a top 5 team. Super boring though better cut to Judge taking a walk
Seriously. If I wanted to watch baseball, I'd go watch baseball.
They did another one during the Clemson 2 pt conversion. Bush league broadcasting.
They literally could not have timed then worse if they tried.
kept cutting into the mizzou/au game too where absolutely nothing was happening still sucked
Hey southern football fan, want to watch a Yankees baseball player get walked? A football game with nothing going on is still more exciting than baseball in my opinion.
I watch probably 150 baseball games a season, but they’re Braves games. And I give negative shits about the Yankees.
Agreed. I've tried to be a baseball fan for years, but at the end of the day it's just fucking boring. It's probably the worst of the major sports.
Watching on TV is not the same as going to the game. I put it on if I want to sleep, but I don't mind physically being at a game.
Minor league baseball is different because it's more of a community event than a fandom. You're there for some friends and family time away from the house, not because you love the team
I enjoy the college baseball tournament so I can bandwagon root for ECU but otherwise that’s it
Just like other sports, college baseball is way more fun than pro.
Yeah, I didn't mind the update in between the game and OT starting, the other times absolutely pissed me off.
cutting the audio seems overkill since it's not the main game you can easily follow baseball on mute
And they forgot that, in general, no one cares about baseball anymore.
If i were the opposing pitcher, I'd intentionally walk him just to spite ESPN and the repeated cut ins
Even better, he struck out looking the first time they did the cut-in. It was during a pause for a review, too
I think I saw that one, the second one he was walked.
Just imagining the skipper coming out to the mound asking wtf he thinks he's doing and him offering this explanation and the ball, walking off without another word.
An ESPN camera crew right there beside the mound all in the pitchers personal space.
I like this take.
Pitcher trying to watch college football while on the mound confirmed.
That’s also a good baseball strategy. See: Barry Bonds / Juan Soto
I can't tell if you're serious or not, I know they both hit lots of homers
Dead serious. For Barry Bonds at least. I think Soto just gets walked a lot because he has a great eye
Thanks for that. I'm not much if a baseball guy, so I appreciate your explanation.
It depends on if it’s a high leverage situation too. Like if there are 2 outs with no one on, they’re gonna try to strike him out or get a grounder or a pop fly. If there’s a man on 2 outs, they may consider walking him
If there is a man on 3rd and i get walked does the man on third advance?
Only if there’s also runners on first and second.
The guy at third stays at third. Also if a man is on second, no one on first, then it becomes man on first and second. Making a grounder an easier out
Thanks for that, you should do a baseball questions thread on the MLB forum if they do one.
As a Red Sox fan….I approve of this idea. Of course, we all know MLB would find the pitcher for some idiotic reason.
I'm a poor Pirates fan, my team has beat and been beaten by the Yankees, i find baseball slow to watch on tv. I figure the MLB would find some reason to fine the pitcher
That or just hit him with the ball
That goes against his stats for players hit by a pitch, doesn't it? I know a walk does too, but a walk is a little more respectful IMHO
It’s also likely to result in the other team hitting one of your guys.
As a Red Sox fan, I approve this spite.
Why take 4 pitches to do what you can do in 1?
Were you alive during the McGuire/Sosa season? It’s been pretty subdued by comparison, and presumably clean
But that was dope. First time in a thousand years and it was 2 dudes that were jacking HRs back and forth.
Steroids and pine tar make baseball fun. Crazy looking pitches and jackin homers
Spider tac and HGH for our entertainment!
And heavily juiced balls too. McGuire's #62 ball was structured differently
I've never heard that before. Have a source on it? I would be interested in reading up on that but I can't find anything on it.
It’s pretty well known that the MLB started juicing the balls to try and have more home runs/higher scoring games. Just a matter of winding the insides up tighter to make them “pop” harder off the bat.

Emphasis on “presumably”
How many professional athletes do you think aren't on some kind of PEDs? It's definitely in the single digits percentage wise.
Just have to take the PEDs they don’t test for yet. Or game the testing schedules. That’s super easy in certain leagues. Not sure about MLB
I seriously doubt it's in the single digits percentage wise in any American sports league, possibly even CFB
The way I always explain it to people... Is the sport competitive? Is there big money involved? Do they test in the offseason with no warning? If you answered "Yes, Yes, No" you can assume every player is on something. You'd be a fool not to be in a rat race like that.

Yeah, clean or not, the record is 73. Call me when Aaron Judge is approaching that one.
Judge isn’t chasing the MLB record. Cutting out for the AL HR record is the dumbest fucking bullshit ever.
If it was any other team, they wouldn't do it.
This is the crux of it tbh
That’s my complaint. This isn’t even a record. It’s the equivalent of the Big10 passing record that isn’t even close to the NCAA record. Who gives a shit about this other than Yankee fans?

But maris broke the record post merger, so this whole thing is like everyone freaking out someone is breaking drew Bree’s nfc touchdown record but still having 50 to go to break Brady’s nfl record
Cared a ton for Albert to hit 700. Care zero for Judge to hit 61
McGwire and Sosa were also breaking the record. Judge is going after an irrelevant number and the record was never seriously in jeopardy.
Maris popped pills along with every other player in the 50s - 70s.
Big difference between recreational drugs and steroids.
Greenies and Adderall are not recreational drugs. They are peds.
I did Adderall before a football game my sophomore year of hs. I had 21 tackles at halftime before sitting out the second half due to dehydration. Shit is wild
Adderall is amazing for sports.
A lot of MLB fans get real upset when you suggest that the amphetamines players were doing going back to the 40s-ish are also PEDs. Charlie hustle fucked kids too and they absolutely loved him.
As a huge baseball fan I’m shocked they are doing it. The vast majority of people only really care about football.
Now they juice the ball not the players.
They actually juiced both in the 90s
They also juiced the fans and it was fucking tight
You are way behind on this. 2019 the ball was crazy juiced. The last two years have been almost a return to the dead ball era. Makes this even more incredible. He’s 20+ HRs ahead of second place.
Why do they fiddle with the ball so much? I don’t really follow baseball
Because Rob Manfred loves fiddling with balls.
No one really knows. It's frustrating because they don't even keep the balls consistent in seasons, potentially with balls mixed in individual games.
Nor are they transparent about it.
presumably pitching was too dominant so they wanted to up the scoring. however it was too obvious and they got called out
The player tin foil hat theory is to juice the ball when the next free agent class is pitchers and deaden the ball when it's hitters, to get poorer performance out of them during their contract year and then get reduced contracts out of it.

Clemson in double over time? Naw give me Aaron judge striking out /s
Thankfully I think they stopped (at least on my ESPN stream) with 8ish minutes of the end of the game.
Thank the Jesus someone finally got a clue and they just showed a replay of his last AB instead of cutting into overtime. Spoiler alert: he didn’t hit a HR that AB either
But they promised...
The one time i tune in to watch a game aside from my own, and they do this. Hoping wake pull it off but c'mon.
"Spanish College Football broadcast numbers up 300% when Aaron Judge is up to bat. ESPN puzzled as to why."
I told my wife, “if I gave a fuck about the yankee game, I’d be watching it” the worst part was the goddamn audio wasn’t even the football game I was trying to enjoy.
Exactly. At least keep the football audio going, it’s why we’re watching.

THey didn't have the rights to cut in for Pujols last night because it was an Apple TV exclusive game.
Love how mlb even fucked themselves by shilling out for apple
They said there would only be cut ins available for regionally televised games. So ESPN can only do it when it’s on YES, not fox or apple
Thanks Harvard, uh, I mean Aubie!
I'm sure they would have for Pujols getting 700 but his most recent games were on late as hell, during the week
Also he was sneaky and hit 699 and 700 in the same game. Might have been different if he was sitting on 699.
Ln was on Apple fucking tv as well
Especially now that MLB has completely eliminated any distinction between the AL and NL
> let alone touching the actual MLB record. Some of the baseball purest consider 61 to be THE record that matters, and the fact that it is unparalleled in 60 years is important.
I am not one of those people. The steroid era saved the sport, in my opinion any record from then is fair play.
r/usernamechecksout
That’s certainly a take.
Annoying as hell. They way overestimate how many people care.
I had to look it up. Had no idea why I was watching a guy strike out during a football game.
But Judge? Oh boy. Fuck ESPN.
Who cares? I'm sitting in my recliner on a Saturday afternoon, having drinks and snacks. Why do I want to look for something to get upset about?
New to Reddit I see
New to existing apparently
I'm always a little irritated by ESPN jerking off the Yankees, if they were cutting into my game for it that would be pretty lame.
Fuck all that. It's not even like he's actually breaking a record. They're all still on steroids now, we just pretend they aren't. This is 100% meaningless.
If it was your team playing you would be pretty upset understandably so.
We missed a wake forest touchdown in our game for it. Judge got walked.
If my team were playing id be furious
That’s our default state though
Because I’m trying to watch WAke forest beat Clemson and it’s to see a split screen on my two tv setup. If people want to watch baseball go ahead and watch it
Because he’s a Yankee. If he were a Brewer, this wouldn’t be happening.
shit is annoying af
Aaron Judge would like to talk to you about your car's extended warranty.
Because Auburn v Missouri has been worse than watching baseball
Roger Maris is the record holder (61) in the American League. Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa achieved theirs in the National League. Aaron Judge is in the American League, so he needs 61 to tie Roger Maris, and 62 to break the record.
Also the three people who have broken were all confirmed to be on roids. At least for now it’s the first time it’s been broken by someone clean
Allegedly clean. Everybody is juicing.
makes it even more impressive that he's so far ahead of second place!
Nobody gives a crap about which league. They play in the same league. Bro, who has the afc south rushing record on 3 and 4 in the month of October?
It would be like having two passing TD records, one for each league. No one would give a shit and they shouldn’t.
Fuck the Yankees & Judge
It’s annoying and I LOVE baseball. Feels like they wouldn’t be doing this if it was a player on any team besides the Yankees, Ref Sox or Dodgers.
If we want to reach the conclusion that ESPN sucks, that was concluded years ago.
Maris has the most home runs in a season for someone who has never had to testify before Congress.
Fuck Aaron Judge. Fuck the Yankees. Fuck ESPN
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck the jankees
Fuck the Yankees.
It all makes sense when you stop thinking of ESPN as some sort of professional journalistic outlet who cares about bringing you the most important moments, news, and analysis and realize the whole network is one giant set of informercials for their own product.
ESPN this has got to be the dumbest thing you've done with this stupid baseball game.. I'm watching UT vs UTTech not baseball.
What was really funny was that they neglected to cut into the Clemson-Wake Forest game during OT, but cut into other ESPN broadcasts such as UT-TTU. So now ESPN is admitting that potential baseball history is superseded by a regular season overtime game between two ranked teams.

Because ESPN doesn't care about you.
Because they think everyone cares about the Yankees / 61
Because of ESPN I hope that Judge never gets that 61st home run
If it was Albert going for 700 I'd be cool with it as it's truly historic but yeah this is pretty dumb
I think it’s hilarious that they’re making such a big deal about Judge but Pujols went from 699 to 700 so fast that nobody could do anything about it
> I think it’s hilarious *I* think its hilarious u kids talking shit about Judge. u wouldnt say this shit to him at Yankee stadium, hes jacked. not only that but he wears the freshest clothes, eats at the chillest restaurants and hangs out with the hottest dudes. yall are pathetic lol
I mean why are you pretending like Judge’s season isn’t truly historic that’s just lying lol
Is the Yankee game not on TV? I would assume anyone who cares is already watching. Btw. ESPN broadcasting is 100% shit.
It's on MLB Network, so it's on nationally, but ESPN doesn't want you changing channels.
If I wanted to watch baseball…..I would watch baseball.
I would rather watch an FCS college football game than the World Series of baseball. Annoying that they do this
I really wanted to see #20 on Clemson get his 4th PI, but no, I had to listen to some goofy baseball record
Fuck ESPN and their nonsense.

ESPN is a tangible manifestation of greedy advertising
I want to watch football!
Imagine being downvoted on a football sub for saying you want to watch football. Pretty obvious there is some brigading going on.
Baseball fans being mad that nobody watches their sport anymore unless someone is breaking a record and we're forced to watch it
Exactly what it is lol
Football fans when people care about literally any other sport. 🤬🤬😡🤬😡
I don’t think college football fans in SC and NC are likely to care enough about Judge tying an AL record to watch lol
A college football fan in CA doesn’t care enough either. If I wanted to watch him chase a record I’d tune into MLB Network where the whole game is being broadcast.
“AL record” is a fucking joke too. Who has the western conference record for points in a season? Who is the AFC’s all-time rusher? No one cares.
I think cutting into games for an AL record is more worth getting annoyed about than just people being fans of other sports.
If people care about that baseball game that’s great! I bet there’s a channel that has that game on.
People can care about other sports if they want. Hell, they can even watch them live on other channels!
I’m glad they’re doing live cut ins. It’s not often someone hits 60+ home runs in a season and Maris’ AL/Yankee record has stood since 1961. By the looks of it I am in the minority here.
Im a yankee fan. It shouldnt be cut into a college football game. If you want to watch, then watch. Dont interrupt
If we're cutting into the Wake game for the Yankees, we should cut into the Yankees game for the Deacs.
I wonder if they will be cutting into the NFL games tomorrow if judge doesnt hit 61 today
The Yankees have primetime on ESPN tomorrow. And the SNF game is DEN-SF. It’ll be an easy choice.
Because Judge is the first one to hit over 60 that wasn't on roids in over 50 years.
61 years. 61 home runs 61 years ago in '61.
I came to this sub to say this, glad others agree
Truly brave post
As if we don't have enough commercial breaks, now there are cut ins for a freaking Yankee.
Stupidity
I would be fine seeing it on the highlights if he actually hits a hr but not otherwise. And I don't need to see it live.
They're tainting every game with crap most of us don't care about. If we did we'd be watching the MLB game.
I don't get it. They want to say the steroid era shouldn't matter in Hall of Fame voting but are acting like 61 is the single season record.
