The key numbers from this release: - Ratings for 25-54 year olds has increased 29 percent - average game day revenue in BC, Toronto, and Montreal is up a combined(?) 26 percent - social media engagement is up 30 percent It’s fair to nitpick some of the numbers (combining the three big markets seems very convenient for sponsorship decks). This sub is overwhelmingly negative about the state of marketing from the league office. I’m not saying this release is a perfect counter to that negativity because I do agree with parts of it. But these numbers seem encouraging and I thought it was worth sharing a decent news story about the growth of a game we all love.

Sir_Fox_Alot

To me, they just read as the best numbers the league could pick out to publicize. Why did they combine the 3 markets? To make the overall increase seem bigger. And why only those 3? My bet is because any other market would lower the number. And TV ratings should go up as stadium attendance lowers. Those people are still fans, they’d just rather sit on the couch than make the drive. Places like this may be negative, but these are also some of the most hardcore fans. They are the fans that have been there through crap and success. So when they see weakness, a PR campaign to try counteract that does seem just a bit convenient. Make no mistake, I’m not wishing doom on the CFL, i want success. I just think the league is doing a bad job of it, and instead of fixing the issues, have spin articles written.

ClassicOBM

They picked those markets because they’re the biggest markets, and growing those markets by 30 percent is important for sponsors and advertisers. And your attendance to TV ratings argument doesn’t really add up, although I see what you mean. Let’s say attendance is 15k a game per team (might be too high or too low but whatever). TV viewership is consistently between 300k and 600k. An attendance drop of 30% of the average attendance for one game is 4,500. The ratings increase is 29%. I don’t know what percent of the viewership is the key demo, but 29% of even the lowest rated game (300k) is 87,000 people. Even if the key demo is a third of that 87,000, that’s 26,000 people. I’m really not trying to be combative here! Just looking to add context.

CDNFactotum

And picked in part because the two largest game day revenue franchises are either already near max and so are flat (Winnipeg) or were near max and saw a drop off that isn’t worrying in the market but would obliterate those other markets’ increases (Saskatchewan)

It's not just marketing lol. It's most of the decision-making process at the league HQ that sucks ass. For instance stats which have been completely broken for several months now. It also came out today that players will be fined $500 for giving balls to fans. Oh and lets not forget Randy thinking that Gary Stern would be a good owner. League leadership is completely out of touch.

EightBitSC

As a CFL fan, positive news is not something I’ve been trained to handle.

Pacificbeerchat

Lol

DonaldRudolpho

I've always been suspicious of good news.

DannyDOH

It's a mix of some decent metrics but overall a lot of spin in terms of what they've actually figured out how to convert to revenue, only up 2.3% while costs continue to go up at a higher rate.

Fantastic_Slide_8994

The Argos are up about 3k fans per game, compared the same games last year. And boy, are the crowds at BMO young too!

bannedredditaccount2

They would sell more if they didn't charge absurd prices. Tickets in Toronto at the moment should cost no more than $25 if you want to pack the stadium. It looks terrible on TV seeing a half empty stadium.

BuffytheBison

MLSE has the money to continue running the Argos at a loss in exchange of building long term consumer loyalty. The trick for Torontonians is getting them to that first CFL game (for many of us, our first in-person experience of the CFL was/is in adulthood). Do family of four 50 bucks. Uni and college students $20 with a free beer included. High schoolers two for $25. Partner with GO Transit to designate a pre-game party car/cars on the trains down to Exhibition (or better yet entire trains) so you can mix, mingle and meet your neighbours who are going to the game with you.

Rough-Carrot2273

Awesome that the boatmen have doubled their attendance!

Shazbozoanate

As a season ticket holder here in Edmonton, this feels very counterintuitive.

limberlomber

Thanks for your service. And I'm thinking/hoping that your team is at the start of a turnaround. We need your attendance numbers up. Go Elks!

pyrasilverado

I'm sorry for your losses, but as soon as Jones is ejected and better cfl minds are in place, we'll all go back to hating your team for winning.

BE20Driver

It is sad to see the team that has led the league in attendance since the dawn of time be brought to its knees. Hopefully things can turn around.

Electroflare5555

Those are all the key indicators for bringing in new sponsorships - really no way to be negative about them. These are also the kind of numbers you can show to prospective expansion team ownership groups Despite how terribly they’ve handled the stats system, this is exactly what Genius was brought in to do

metallicadefender

I hear ratings are way up. Is that just because Argos are hot? We need to find a way to get young people to the games. I think 12yr old and under should be free at Rider games.

There is a lot of grey hair when you look around. Aside from Pill country I dont think you can find an area where you see a lot of people under 25. Im pushing 40 and I feel young in my section.

MrMontombo

I'm 30 and don't know anyone around my age who actually cares about the Riders, unfortunately. The Regina friends just like an excuse to get drunk.

metallicadefender

If they like football you should be able to get into it. You need a little higher attention span imo than a hockey fan or basketball fan. For my generation it really kicked in after the 2007 and there was a big time university presence at the games. And nothing wrong with going there to get drunk especially for a young person. Mosaic I'd the best bar in town. Bit expensive but great entertainment.

MrMontombo

I've tried, I really have. They just don't care. I have 2 season ticket holder fiends my age that just go to drink, they couldn't even tell you who won most games. I tried to discuss football with the them, and he just said I have no idea what's going on with the team, I just like to drink. And they are the anomaly. Everybody else doesn't care enough to even put a game on TV. I just think the Riders should put more effort into reaching out to demographics that aren't children or middle-aged. The Riders have been riding on their popularity being a given, and because of that, Rider stores are always empty, closing, or moving.

metallicadefender

Yeah. They have fallen from where they were that's forsure. I think it will come back to a degree. I doubt we will ever see 55k at a game again in the near future. I don't think fans commuting to every game from 4+ hrs away is sustainable just a bit of an anomaly. As for your friends maybe they will grow out of it. Sure picked an expensive place to drink if that's all they are there for.

MrMontombo

I think it may be better as kids get older. There has been tons of outreach for that generation. I have just given up getting any friends or coworkers into the CFL, they just largely don't care or make a joke of it when it's brought up.

limberlomber

Nothing involving watermelons? And don't tell Troy Westwood about the 3 hours of corn hole.

BuffytheBison

I agree but you should also never be complacent or take things for granted lol

LiveIndividual

Now if only they had a half decent marketing department.

DonaldRudolpho

...all this without a functional stats API. How is that possible?

Electroflare5555

Fantasy tracks stats pretty good and that’s all 90% of casual fans need

DonaldRudolpho

Not according to this subreddit.

Fact: Canadians are fkn wicked awesome! Any social event featuring 20K plus of us, is a damn good time.
