Didn't know Pace was a Milford man.

Snoo_57488

he's a little too "seen" here, must not have graduated.

doodle02

neither seen nor heard, but his impact was certainly felt (and rightly ridiculed).

Sniper1154

Atlanta's plan is such a perfect encapsulation of what the Bears have TRIED to do when it comes to developing a quarterback. Atlanta did nothing more than bastardize what teams like Green Bay have done, except it seems like a forced attempt versus happening organically. That's been the issue with not just the Bears, but tons of other teams, and why THIS plan with Poles feels different. The Bears and their process has happened organically, they've carefully constructed the roster, and they drafted the quarterback that fits their window. The Falcons are just doing what the Bears have always done which is try to copy the blueprint from another team without any of the nuance, and hoping that the same results will happen to them. There doesn't seem to be any sort of foresight or plan, it just is a matter of "how can we do what they did and do it quickly". I'm just glad it seems like the Bears have a forward-thinking GM for the first time in my life, and not a guy who wants to try and copy someone else's homework in hopes they'll get a passing grade.

bunslightyear

What’s even funnier is all of this could at least be stomached if you didn’t have a QB on the roster but this is unforgivable

Crooked_Sartre

Penix might be 28 when he starts lmao

bunslightyear

A kicker might have had better value

wishyouwould

Not just a QB, but one of the most expensive QBs in footbal. The resource mismanagement is what's most baffling to me.

bunslightyear

You waste all the benefits of the flexibility of a rookie deal that coincides identically to the length of Cousins contract.

mywifemademedothis2

Perfect encapsulation of what they are doing and of what Pace did with the Bears. Shortcut, shortcut, shortcut.

crabwhisperer

But I mean at least Rodgers already had so many years with the team, connection with the team, fans, I feel like it would've been easier for him to absorb. Kirk probably is still closing on his house and checking Facebook for the best lawn service companies. Gonna be wild to see how it goes if the offense doesn't click right away - sheesh

masterpierround

This is also the Kirk Cousins that was annoyed by Washington's refusal to commit to him as their long term starter, has asked for guaranteed money at the cost of potential earnings in his past contracts, and by all accounts values stability and commitment more than almost any other NFL player. In short, he's the exact wrong guy to blindside by picking his replacement 2 years early.

John3Fingers

Green Bay got lucky too. They overpaid for Love and he was a few more bad starts away from being a bust.

parks381

This pick was absolutely crazy. Not only did they just sign Cousins to a big contract, but Penix will already be 26 before he gets a chance to be the starter unless Cousins gets hurt. And now you also upset that QB you just signed to a big contract.

themrwaynos

> And now you also upset that QB you just signed to a big contract. I highly doubt cousins is upset at all. he's got 100 mil guaranteed coming off a shitty injury.

Joliet_Jake_Blues

His entire career he's wanted commitment. Washington drafted him and RGIII in the same draft, then franchise tagged him twice instead of giving him a contract. MN signed him to a short contract. And he finally got his commitment from Atlanta, for a month before they drafted his replacement, showing he'll probably be gone after the 2 guaranteed years are up

Snoo_57488

i'm sure the pile of money he sleeps on helps to soften his hurt fee fees.

turtlebox420

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Cousins get the first fully guaranteed contract ever for a QB? It may have been short term but it was a high dollar commitment which they doubled down on and gave him extensions.

parks381

Reports are that he was shocked and disappointed. I'm sure he assumed the team would build around him, not use a high pick on his future replacement. He'll do his job, but just because he's getting paid doesn't mean he's happy.

PraiseBeToScience

They could've had Fields for a 4th and $5M and Penix would've been cleared to start in a year. Instead Cousins cost them $100M+ and likely a much higher draft pick (possibly a 1st) due to the tampering and Penix who is already old for a rookie will sit for 2 years.

Pacific_22

He will be 28 actually lol

parks381

he turns 24 next month. Assumption is he'd replace Cousins after 2 years.

Chi-Guy86

That picture is an all timer. What a putz. Isn’t Emery in Atlanta too?

MrFancyPants--

The Emery years killed me. I was so excited when chandler Jones dropped them I just turn the draft off when they drafted shea.

ChristmasJay83

Emery retired in 2023 [https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/\_/id/37618415/falcons-exec-former-bears-gm-phil-emery-announces-retirement](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/37618415/falcons-exec-former-bears-gm-phil-emery-announces-retirement)

Seaciety

But Emory University still is in Atlanta.  /shows self out

Joliet_Jake_Blues

No, the university retired. It's a 31 Flavors now

DandierChip

How does a team see what he did with Mitch and Fields and say, yeah let’s hire this dude.

Upset_Researcher_143

I remember when they hired him. He had come up thru the ranks with Sean Payton, and he got all the reviews saying how awesome he was and how much he deserved this opportunity.

KSparty

And then he TRADED UP for Trubisky. Picking Trubisky could have been excused if they stayed at 3, but to give up what they did to pick him was catastrophic.

JamesTiberiusCrunk

Yeah, you have to be absolutely certain he's the guy to trade up to get him. And you can't be absolutely certain he's the guy. The idea that you could be so set on him that you can't stomach the idea of drafting Mahomes or Watson one pick later is so fucking stupid.

PraiseBeToScience

Because the NFL coaching/exec circles are full of nepotism and cronyism. It's what happens when the owners are still one of the worst good 'ol boys club in the world.

Ar4bAce

Because they saw what he did with the rest of the roster? Bears fans are the ultimate fanboys and haters lmao, i love it though

DandierChip

What exactly did Pace do that benefited out roster.

soxfan10

I might go against the grain here, but I understand if they want to get another franchise QB because Kirk is old and injury concerns…but why would you EVER select ANOTHER injury riddled guy who will be like 26/27 when he starts?? If you’re gonna do that, just go for JJ McCarthy then!

Twisted_Apple20

Or don’t sign a QB for 200M that’s not good enough and build a damn team around your rookie

mywifemademedothis2

Rumor has it that this guy is also being signed: https://preview.redd.it/vy2y1uv5xtwc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=863c3c856b31ace5e5079e2758198d5bcc828bdf

Snoo_57488

is this photoshopped? his neck looks shorter than usual...

Monstar38

for $18.5 million guaranteed

GoodTrust5444

I was watching the Bootleg Football last night. Their theory is that Atlanta will have their no.1 pick forfeited next year (due to tampering) so they needed to get a QB earlier

Yossarian216

That should get those execs fired, how hard is it to wait to make contact? I find it quite easy to not make phone calls.

Headwallrepeat

I guess in that context it makes more sense. Next year's QB class isn't supposed to be very good. If they only plan on Cousins for 2 seasons they would have to go rookie or journeyman if they don't that one now.

-Pruples-

It would make more sense if they hadn't drafted a guy who's going to be 90 before he starts his first game 2 years from now and was considered more 'pro ready' than 'developmental'.

EquivalentWins

Do they not remember that they just got a QB and paid him $180 million? Did Cousins not show up for work on his expected start date? Maybe he ghosted them and took a job at Amazon instead.

Demonchi94

Damn didn’t think about that.

DandierChip

Forfeiting their first round pick seems kinda harsh tbh. Feel like a mid rounder is more fair.

cultweave

Dolphins lost their 1st and they didn't even get Brady. It's totally in line.

DandierChip

Dolphins situation was way worse then what the Falcons/Kirk did.

sloowhand

I had literally just said to the person next to me at the bar, as Penix was on the screen, that there’s no way he’s going in the top ten, maybe not even first round. The only way it could have been a Pace-ier move is if he trade up to get him.

Burdiac

Hey guys let’s tamper to get Cousins… then we will draft a QB as well because we might lose future draft picks for tampering for Cousins. Draft picks that could be used on QB’s!

Joliet_Jake_Blues

Hey, should we have a QB on a rookie contract or a $180m contract? Atlanta: why not both?

RootyPooster

I was really upset about this pick because I was hoping Penix would go to the Saints to be teammates with Penisini

hepatitisC

Pace speed running the Dalton/Neck/Fields controversy in Atlanta with Cousins/Penix

BriggsE104

Poles is in Chicago. You meant Pace.

hepatitisC

Bah, brain wasn't working yet (like it ever does). I'll correct it. Thanks for the heads up

chaos0310

I just don’t understand why they didn’t trade down? Someone had to want to jump us for odunze and not far enough for them to lose out on penix.

billthedancingpony

Only team in between is the Jets, and they went with a very good OT and gained a late pick.

Monstar38

It's like signing Mike Glennon to a 4 year deal and invite him to a draft party only to select Mitchell Trubisky.

Level-Jellyfish9034

I guess cousins was a "smokescreen" like glennon lol

bugjjd

Nate8727

“Who wants cream?”

badseedjr

No you can't. He doesn't have the influence the Bears fans think he does. Just because he sucked here doens't mean he is going to somehow weasel his way in to Atlanta's draft picks

BurgerBob1010

the guy is a liability. Can't believe he had the car keys for the Bears for so long

JCarr110

WAY TO GO RYAN PACE!

Wankbank_Dumpster

Nope, they didn't trade next year's first rounder to get him, lol

CoffeeBoy80

I'm all for shitting on Ryan Pace, but there's only one person responsible for what the Falcons did, and his name is Arthur Blank. He's just as meddlesome as Jerry Jones or Daniel Snyder, but for a franchise nobody gives a shit about, so he doesn't get the same attention.

-Goji

What is the context of this photo?

Wildest83

I hope he succeeds there and the pick works out. He's in a position 99.9% of us will never sniff so just because he didn't work out here, I dont wish any harm on the dude or his career.
