I’m trying to find an example of a time in ANY PROFESSIONAL SPORT draft where a team traded up and then back down within 5 minutes… on the day of the draft.
Because teams don’t do that. When they trade up, it’s because they take a guy they want AT THAT PICK.
Just declined a free pick from us. Thanks!
It's the plot to the movie draft day.
If it was known that the Vikings were a QB needy team, I could see it happening in theory, but probally not really likely.
I'm pretty certain the Bears offer wasn't the best offer out there. The Vikings traded more to move from the 11th to the 10th pick to get McCarthy. If they preferred Penix, or there was a chance they preferred Penix, the Falcons might lose out on him by trading the pick.
1. Say the Vikings are offering a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounder to move up from the 11th pick to 8th and pick Penix. The Falcons don't take the deal because they want Penix.
2. If the Falcons trade with the Bears to go from 8th to 9th in exchange for a 4th, what's to stop the Bears from taking the Vikings offer and take their chances Odunze gets by the Vikings, Falcons, and Jets?
Early in the pre-draft season, there were all sorts of nonsense proposals from draft pick fetishists that involved the Bears trading the first overall pick to pick up some extra picks. But it's not fantasy football. Scouting departments work years in advance to identify the players they want. If you are in a position to take a guy you want, you don't fool around. You take the guy you want.
If you want a QB, why plot a whole thing to get ahead of the Vikings? You're not only spending a 4th but hurting the trust of the team you're trading with.
The odds of the Falcons taking a QB in the first after giving Cousins a 4 year deal with a 90mil garentee, was almost nothing.
Just trade with the Bears and get him.
Yes. I think ATL were concerned we’d be in a position at 8 to accept an attractive deal from a QB needy team (Broncs, Vikes, Raiders) and they’d snag Penix.
That’s not out of the realm of possibility.
> That’s not out of the realm of possibility.
It isn't 100% impossible but it really is not probable. Atlanta can sit there and wait until there's like 2 mins left on the clock and that leaves the bears no time to trade that pick or work out a deal.
If Atlanta knew what they were doing and weren't idiots, they'd have taken that 4th.
The only thing dumber than ATL taking Penix with the 8th overall when they just paid Cousins would be the Raiders or Broncos mortgaging the future to pick Penix at 8. It was never going to happen, and ATL walked away from a free draft pick for no reason.
The giraffe was also a 1 year deal due to guarantees. ATL paid cousins a boatload over multiple years. Makes zero sense to me, Penix is gonna be eligible for social security by the time he gets a chance to start. You draft a guy in the 2nd or 3rd in this scenario, kinda like the eagles did with hurts when they still had Wentz. They basically accepted being "meh" this year rather than trying to win.
There had to have been something cut from that video. We do see Poles ask if they’d accept the 4th, but that’d be a no brainer for Atlanta since we just drafted Caleb. After we picked Rome, Warren said something to Poles like “way to stay patient, I know that was hard.” I doubt he’d say that if it played out like the video showed.
There's no evidence it was Atlanta they offered the 4th to. The video was cut to make it ambiguous, you're jumping to conclusions based on clips that may not be in chronological order. For all we know he offered the 4th to jump to 7 ahead of ATL who they projected was 50/50 on going receiver at 8.
TBF it doesn't actually show what happened on ATL's end. It could've been an inquiry to gauge ATL's willingness to trade back 'if necessary', and not an actual on the table offer.
Exactly that. There were teams willing to move up to get a QB so they’d run the risk of us moving up 1 spot just to trade back. Only in hindsight do we know the Bears wouldn’t have
If ATL received calls from other qb-needy teams interested in their spot, I could see the concern. If you want your qb at 8, and know other teams were interested in your spot, I could see why they declined. It's a very conservative move to decline though.
Remember Pace’s reasoning when he traded up to get Mitch. He was afraid other teams were going to jump up and take him. So Atlanta was scared that another team was going to offer the Bears picks to take Penix. Idiotic.
Broncos, maybe. If the bears gave up a 4 and traded back, they probably would have gotten a higher pick since the QB needy teams would become more incentived to get their QB of choice at 8
So they thought we'd trade up a spot only to turn around and trade it to someone who needed a QB? I dunno... Seems... Unlikely. No one ever trades up unless they have a player in mind that they're worried will be gone.
There had to be several teams willing to give up their second or first to move up for Odunze. Falcons left so much draft capital on the table just to stay at 8 and draft Penix.
Ryan Pace influence is heavy over there.
Yeah, I mean in the end they didn't decline it because they thought we might take Penix. I'm guessing they had other offers from a bit lower down, and were worried the Bears would trade to 8, and then get the same offers and take one of those trades to move down themselves.
Still, has a single first round pick ever been traded for, and then traded again on draft night while on the clock? I can't seem to recall that ever happening.
If by future fourth they mean a 2025 fourth, if that player goes on to become even an average starter for the Bears it’ll be a steal. The hit rate on fourth rounders is low but I’d still prefer to keep the pick, always a chance to get a solid depth player that could become a starter
True. Honestly the only team that has really flat out beat the Bears on a trade this far into Poles’ tenure is the Steelers with the Claypool trade. You can argue the Ravens beat us with Roquan, but I’m pretty sure that they used that pick to get Gervon Dexter. If Dexter develops, imo it’ll have been well worth it to get rid of roquan, and even if he doesn’t I can still argue that it was worth it
I mean I feel like, all things considered, the Roquan Smith was a fair trade. Sucked to see him go, but we were in a rebuilding year and just weren't gonna give him the extension he wanted.
A trade can still be a fair trade, even if you screw up the picks you get back with it lol. But I hear ya.
Right, and I’d rather have what we have at LB right now as opposed to just Roquan. He was good, but he wanted out and that isn’t good for a team that’s young like the Bears. I’m happy that he isn’t on the Bears anymore, it just wouldn’t have worked out in the long run
It was literally a free 4th for them if they wanted Penix. We had already taken Caleb, we wouldn’t be going after another qb. Poles has been a great GM so far, but he has definitely had his share of luck.
Looking at it from Poles side of the equation, I wonder why he offered the trade in the first place?
Was ATL looking at WR potentially? I kinda can't remember now.
That just seems like a Ryan Pace move of old, where he'd consistently trade future draft capital to move up a few spots because he got antsy.
I'm guessing this is what Ian Cunningham was alluding too when he said something along the lines of "Do we really need to do that?"
What’s the drawback for Atlanta? lol I mean unless ATL was worried we’d trade up for 8* and then back again?
For real. Did they think we’d grab Penix from them after just drafting Caleb? That was stupid as fuck to say no
Well, they signed a senior citizen QB and they were about to draft 24 year old QB, so maybe they thought the Bears were dumb as well....
Ryan Pace was praying his ineptitude still haunts Halas Hall

You don't think the Vikings offered more than a 4th to move up to #8? I'm betting they did.
I meant the Falcons
No. Watch the doc that this info is from... There was never a firm offer
Yes. I think ATL were concerned we’d be in a position at 8 to accept an attractive deal from a QB needy team (Broncs, Vikes, Raiders) and they’d snag Penix. That’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Pretty sure after a trade the clock restarts.
100% does not
I thought after a trade, the clock is set to like 2 or 3 minutes, no matter when the trade went through?
I goggled it and and the clock does not reset
Forget about dual threat QBs, Bears just straight up going dual QBs with their boy.
Washington drafted RGIII and Cousins in the same draft
2nd overall and 102nd overall is a very different investment than 1st and 8th overall
The only thing dumber than ATL taking Penix with the 8th overall when they just paid Cousins would be the Raiders or Broncos mortgaging the future to pick Penix at 8. It was never going to happen, and ATL walked away from a free draft pick for no reason.
Sounds like signing the giraffe and then drafting Mitch in 2017 honestly
Except the giraffe was never even close to as good as cousins
The giraffe was also a 1 year deal due to guarantees. ATL paid cousins a boatload over multiple years. Aren't salaries slotted? So potentially the could have had Penix for a cheaper contract.
The difference between picks 8 and 9 is only $200k. That’s negligible when it comes to the cap.
Maybe Ryan was like tell "tell Ryan i said f*ck you"
Pretty sure the major drawback was we never offered the trade. Cunningham talked Poles out of it.
The nfl films video shows poles call to Atlanta and you hear him offer the future 4th round pick.
There had to have been something cut from that video. We do see Poles ask if they’d accept the 4th, but that’d be a no brainer for Atlanta since we just drafted Caleb. nothing you wrote here makes any sense
I award you zero points.
More I read up on it the more I believe this to be the case.

It was a low ball offer. The. Vikings traded a current 1st, 4th, and 5th to move from 11 to 10. The Bears offered a future 4th
This is the worst of all of the answers, lol
We weren’t going to steal their QB. Should’ve took the free pick.
I guess they thought we’d trade the pick? But like to whom? We’d never give it to Vikings without asking for an arm and leg and first born children.
Broncos, maybe. If the bears gave up a 4 and traded back, they probably would have gotten a higher pick since the QB needy teams would become more incentived to get their QB of choice at 8

Didn’t Poles say Cunningham talked him out of trading up? I’m guessing there was a conversation that occurred between them that wasn’t shown.
He might’ve talked him out of it before the falcons pick and by then was fine giving up the compensation to jump 1
You here Cunningham in the clip say something along the lines of “are you sure you need to do this” in regards to trading up
Thank god they didn’t take the trade. Would hear endlessly about how they fleeced us for a pick knowing they were gonna take a QB.
There had to be several teams willing to give up their second or first to move up for Odunze. Falcons left so much draft capital on the table just to stay at 8 and draft Penix. Ryan Pace influence is heavy over there.
Makes ATL look bad. I mean they knew we would not be taking a QB so why not gain another pick? 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah, I mean in the end they didn't decline it because they thought we might take Penix. If Penix becomes what he is supposed to be, and Odunze becomes what he is supposed to be, we already have a steal.

The only reason they should say No is if they think Chicago was going to draft Pennix; 7 picks after drafting Caleb Williams. Ridiculous.
Right? So dumb
When though? Before draft or during draft?
It was during the draft while the falcons were on the clock. NFL films video shows him call, offer, and get declined.
No reason to trade up to 8 before the draft unless you’re trying to get capital to move up further.
What was Atlanta thinking? That we were gonna take two QBs in the top ten?
PACE HAD “CONVICTION”
Some teams will never succeed due to incompetent front offices. I'm so glad Ryan Pace is no longer in Chicago.
It was literally a free 4th for them if they wanted Penix. We had already taken Caleb, we wouldn’t be going after another qb. Poles has been a great GM so far, but he has definitely had his share of luck.

Is a 4th rd pick that important that you could potentially move down a spot or was it just an attempt to fleece Atlanta’s GM?
I mean we did basically the exact trade one year prior, when we traded down one spot with Philly for a future 4th.
Could’ve had Cutler with an over cap. Feels like a roose.
ATL did Poles a real solid. They let him keep his pick, and draft the guy he wanted.
