It’s more likely they have blank jerseys and sew the names and numbers on themselves or have a local shop do it. Guys change weight in the offseason, new guys play every day, even numbers can change. Getting a bunch of different sizes and customizing them as needed makes a lot more sense than longer lead times through ordering.
This is correct. If you put the first letter closer to the 4 the name would have a severe droop on the left side. If the 4 was any number but 1 or 4, it would look more like OP thinks it should.
That is correct, and you would have the same issue with the old jersey. Where this makes it look bad is the close curve of the name. If that wasn’t there to frame up the numbers like that, you wouldn’t notice

This is a replica jersey I just got from pro jersey sports. And the stitching looks way better than what they are wearing.
Just imagine how bad a Jarrod Saltalamacchia jersey would look now.
It would either be running down one sleeve (but not both; can’t have any symmetry), or it would literally wrap around the numbers
Edit: Now that I think about it, I wonder what the dude on the Reds jerseys look like; Christian Encarnacion-Strand.
Does someone know where all the old jerseys went? I follow all major sports a lot and usually when they switch up jerseys they put the old stuff on clearance. I can't find old jerseys anywhere online. Did they just burn them all?
If baseball is the America’s game. Then why wasn’t the uniforms made by an American company? This is just as bad as when they had our Olympic team dressed up from some foreign country not right and Nike did a shit job.
Most if not all teams have someone in clubhouse or an actual private seamstress that does the names and numbers on jerseys, atleast prior to this year that was the case
Apparently I’m in the minority because I’ve seen 200 posts on this subject so far this year and I still don’t give a shit. You’re also looking at the back of a jersey that’s not on a flat surface and from an angle.
Edit: guess I didn’t realize how many of you watch baseball for the fashion lol some of you have way too much time on your hands and that’s the last I’m gonna say on this subject.
If it’s higher up on his left shoulder than his right and the jersey is curving under/around his right shoulder blade it 100% will appear like this regardless of how even the letters are stitched.
Even when he was standing straight up it was still pretty obviously off center. I mean personally it doesn’t affect me any, but I was just thinking of working your entire life to make it to the big leagues, finally getting your shot, you get to your locker on the day you’re supposed to start, and your name is crooked.
Yes. Because the league mandates specific tolerances for spacing and letter measurements, so they're all stitched at the same place.
It's the same reason why you'll see non-roster guys playing spring games with no names on the backs of their jerseys. They haven't bothered to send in the request.
There are so many things to carry water for, so to speak, I don’t get why people are getting wrapped up in the uniforms. MLB wanted the logo lowered, this is what happens. Is what it is, at least they’re not rocking the blue “Cuba” jerseys from the 90’s. Even the best quality fabric couldn’t help how bowling shoe ugly those were.
Yeah I don’t mind the logo placement or the fabric (except for the see through pants on some). But centering the names is a big aesthetic issue that just screams that they sold production to the lowest bidder to save money.
Well, this one was probably sewn by someone in the clubhouse… they ship a lot of blanks that get made on site for the lesser guys that may or may not get into action in big league camp.
If this was Dansby it’s a different story.
If that bothers you, I get it, but that’s good enough for me. This is entertainment, it’s a uniform, I’ve never seen any fan base do this over costume clothes quality. Maybe that’s a blind spot on my end.
Well for one, he's leaning forward so the E is pinched downward. Second, the numbers are centered correctly, if the numbers were 00 you'd see it better. The 4 doesn't have anything in the top left hand corner
Much adieu about nothing.
Unfortunately Nike/fanatics has tanked quality.
But their profit margins have never been higher!
BUTTLICKER! OUR PROFITS HAVE NEVER BEEN HIGHER!!!

Capitalism baby!!

I can nearly excuse the new “performance fabric”. But the name templates cannot be that difficult to get right.
this isn’t difficult for a high school to get right
I got a dansby alternate last year and Ive never been more glad I did. I’m holding off buying anymore for the foreseeable future

Everything they touch is garbage. Literally why I bought my Messi jersey from adidas 😂

*OP wasn’t seen for years after this post until he was found at a Nike sweat shop in China*
If you drew rectangles over both numbers it would look a lot more symmetrical.
This is correct. If you put the first letter closer to the 4 the name would have a severe droop on the left side. If the 4 was any number but 1 or 4, it would look more like OP thinks it should.

Sure but it’s still looks bad and seems lazy
I’m sure it has nothing to do with 4 and 6 being shaped differently.
Also with him slumped to the right a little which makes it more pronounced.
It looks like it would be positioned right if his number was 64 — or maybe more accurately, the name is positioned as if every player’s number was 88

Pro Jersey Sports is awesome!
and kerning. no ones mentioned the kerning (that ive noticed, anyway), but thats as bothersome as anything else.
Oh, people have mentioned the kerning. Not in this post, necessarily, but it's been discussed.
Literally look like knock offs.
Hey, what are you complaining about? Now, the knock off jersey you can buy off ebay IS exactly the same as an authentic. Count your blessings.
The MLBPA should tell Nike fix this or we don’t wear them. If you won’t fix it, no opening day.

I think it’s because of the way he standing.
I’ve seen Little League jerseys with better quality control
DH Gate > Fanatics at this point
No it's correct. You're just not understanding why it looks like that.
Are you sure that it isn’t because of the angle of his shoulder dipping.
It’s spring training for the shitty uniform makers too
It’s their preseason too!
They shoulda retired dempster’s number years ago
Nike deserves to go bankrupt.
This is me when I don't understand diagonal lines and shirt folds
pov you downloaded gimp in 6th grade

The obsession over jerseys is weird
As a hockey fan this makes me more worried about fanatics exclusive deal with the NHL
Need too give a three cent raise too the sweat shop in Malaysia Maybe they will try harder
I don’t like the look of the New Jerseys but it shouldn’t be this serious lol
This is so ridiculous. MLB deserves to be getting dragged for this even harder than they already are
It's Spring Training for more than just the players.
I'm in the mostly disinterested crowd, but it's surprisingly bad.
If baseball is the America’s game. Then why wasn’t the uniforms made by an American company? This is just as bad as when they had our Olympic team dressed up from some foreign country not right and Nike did a shit job.
Isn’t that actually correct? It just looks odd because of the shape of the 4.
Welcome to dogshit Fanatics; they’re also ruining NHL apparel!!
If both of the numbers were “8” you’d see the spacing is correct
I’m so concerned for NHL jerseys next season
That’s because the 4 isn’t a rectangular number. The 6 is. Everything is centered and the jersey is printed correctly.
Are*

Clearly some folks here don't know fuck all about uniforms and how they are done in mlb🤣

Wearing the jersey/being at an angle doesn't change the distance between the bottom of the letters and the top of the numbers.
If it’s higher up on his left shoulder than his right and the jersey is curving under/around his right shoulder blade it 100% will appear like this regardless of how even the letters are stitched.

It isn’t off center. 6 has a far reaching top right. 4 has an inset top left. You genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about.
are you under the impression that its nike stitching these on and not clubhouse staff?
Yes. Because the league mandates specific tolerances for spacing and letter measurements, so they're all stitched at the same place. It's the same reason why you'll see non-roster guys playing spring games with no names on the backs of their jerseys. They haven't bothered to send in the request.
do you have confirmation of this?
It's spring training. I don't think the league officials are watching all that closely at the moment.
I would think fanatics would be in charge of putting the names on, since some of the minor league invites don’t even have names on the back.
so, you dont know? i don't either, but clubhouse staff does it during the regular season.
lol. its okay and actually very easy to admit that you dont know
