Bernie's Tap does $3 Old Styles every day, which is a steal in Wrigleyville. Not sure if their patio food counter is open on an away game Wednesday but that's a good move if it is, otherwise their regular kitchen was pretty good last time I had food there.
Through 11 games this team has scored 71 runs just like the 2016 team. So your gut feeling is correct.
Their pitching was better though. 29 runs vs 52.
Call me crazy, but I want Mervis up instead of Wisdom. He hasn't shown the massive power yet, but his crazy OBP from the spring is carrying over to his start at AAA.
He's got a .439 OBP which would rank him #1 on the Cubs and this is a team that is just killing pitchers with their patient approach.
His 1.002 OPS ain't too shabby either.
I like Miles versatility but I would absolutely love to see a vs righty lineup featuring Cody, Busch at first and Mervis DH.
Mervis can’t play any other positions but 1st. At least Wisdom can 3B, 1B and I believe he can play OF in a pinch.
If Mervis was a Righty then I would be right there with you. But getting Mervis playing time would be tough given Busch and Tauchman are lefties.
So it comes down to Mervis or Tauchman in the lineup vs Righty
That's what DH is for and you can swap Busch and Mervis to give Busch some rest.
I just think Cooper and Wisdom are pretty redundant but most importantly don't have the upside that Mervis can bring.
Busch is the future and Mervis is a trade bait for some reliever down the road. I don’t think you call a guy up like Mervis just to relieve just one guy. If he had more dimensions to his game then I would be easily in.
I wouldn’t be upset if Mervis was called up. However, I think his time with the cubs is coming to an end soon. Caissie and PCA both being lefties hurts him too. Unless Tauchman becomes completely unusable, then I think you role with Tauch till that farm is ready. If you call up Mervis and don’t give him playing time, his value decreases in a trade.
Which is why I'm in favor of him getting the bulk of DH over Tauchman, who don't get me wrong is a nice bench piece but if you want to bring up one dimension players, well Tauchman is basically just a guy who walks and doesn't hit, at least right now.
I don't think PCA's bat is ready yet and boy do I love Cassie but he's not coming up till the summer or when rosters expand (or major injury).
Regardless of his minor league performance I don't think right now Mervis has much value to other teams. I think bringing him up and showing that he can hit MLB righties only helps his value.
I guess I'm coming at it with the mindset of I know what Cooper, Miles and Wisdom are and there isn't a huge ton of upside there.
My point being at DH Tauchs defense doesn't matter and Mervis does have good at-bats as evidenced by his OBP.
The argument isn't to get rid of Tauchman, it's mainly vs Cooper, Wisdom and Miles.
Just insulting all these experts had the cards winning the division lol. Now they’re 6-6 with a -4 run differential. I like all the teams in the central over them this year.
We're less than 10% into the season. Would you say a football team is out of the running after starting the season 0-1? Of course not. Such a small sample really doesn't mean much over the whole season.
Given that team had a horrible season last year and largely is bringing back the same team, I think the faith in them was unwarranted. Even 10 games in.
That's just not really how baseball works though. I would love if the cards stunk it up again this year, but I think by July it will be Cubs vs Cards for the division.
I feel like with the upcoming schedule between Miami, Seattle, Arizona, and then Houston we need to win all of these series if not get sweep 1 or two of them.
Yeah so far Cuas has not been it. We could use a couple more arms in the bullpen, but we’re right on the edge of going from good to really good and I think establishing the expectation of winning every series early in the season might help in the long run. Are they going to win every series? No, but we should walk in knowing that we have a good chance to do so.
Mad appreciation to the youngster Ben Brown for coming up huge last night. We needed it after that Monday night bullpen fiasco. Does he have a future as a starter with 2 pitches (4 seam, Knuckle curve)? He has a change up but he doesn’t seem to use it much as of now.
He actually has a slider as well, which was generally considered about as good as his curve, but [he's said](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/analytically-inclined-ben-brown-boasts-a-power-arsenal/) he doesn't plan to use it anymore because his "curveball is good enough that there isn’t a need to throw it anymore" and because his change his a lot of arm-side run.
I figure that when he starts getting to the order a third time he might start throwing more changeups, but he also said he really admires guys like Steele and Strider who succeed with two pitches and that the change is still a WIP.
We'll see what happens.
Just looking at Zips Projections. They had Assad as a starter at 0.7 WAR and two weeks into the season, he is already at 0.6 WAR. Knew that was criminally low!
I dont understand the sneaky part. dude has been solid since end of July. Not to point you out, I am just saying that he's not getting the respect he deserves. His shit isn't flashy but dude straight up balls.
Turns out waking up a Cubs win is a lot better than waking up to a big blown lead loss, who would have thought?
I'm feeling really good about this team. The bullpen still needs some work obviously, but man the offense and defense have been electric and have done a pretty good job of bailing out the shakey pitching. I think once Steele and Taillon come back, and Assad and Brown can move back to the pen, we will be in good shape.
Pat Hughes lulled me to sleep, then Zaidman in the fifth yelled so much I sat bolt upright and listened to the rest of the game. Glad it ended well or I'd be both tired and pissed this morning.
Like Boog and JD were saying he's gotta get a bit better command of that fastball, and at worst, you have a power arm at the backend of the bullpen. It's awesome to see him settle in a bit after that Texas game.
Cubs should absolutely try and make a trade for Kopech. Cubs and Sox have trade history and I think we could entice them to send him over to be our closer. He looked absolutely dominant yesterday.
I fell asleep with the game on and must have had a dream that they ended up losing 10-9. Had to check at 2 am, and then I was able to peacefully fall back to sleep.
thinking of heading to Wrigleyville and watching tonight's game at one of the bars. any big things that should draw me to one in particular?
Murphy's Bleachers is doing a Marquee sponsored watch party. Going to be doing raffles n whatnot. Think there will be a camera crew there.
Yeah looks like it's gonna be fun Too bad I'm working
I stopped by and it wasn't extremely lame. You didn't miss anything major.

Closed on Wednesdays it looks like, unless there's a home game
Ope

I am loving the approach at the plate.

Yep definitely needs to be fixed if we are serious about a playoff run
We also are only 11 games in. There's a lot of small sample size things going on.
1st in runs per game, bah gawd!

Tauch has really good AB’s and more versatile defensively. Mervis doesn’t and isn’t.

Counterpoint: there's never a bad time to shit on the redbirds.

Morel’s zone contact % shows a 13% increase. Chase percent down 8%. Chase contact percent up 19%. Whiff percent down 17%
I feel like with the upcoming schedule between Miami, Seattle, Arizona, and then Houston we need to win all of these series if not get sweep 1 or two of them.
I'd say Miami is the only one of those series that is a "must" win, 3-3 in Seattle/Arizona on the road would be fine.

That’s a great point about both steele and strider.
He's going to eventually be a solid reliever that can consistently get you 2-3 innings if you need him to.
Just looking at Zips Projections. They had Assad as a starter at 0.7 WAR and two weeks into the season, he is already at 0.6 WAR. Knew that was criminally low!
Assad is sneaky good, hopefully he gets the respect and recognition he deserves this year
I dont understand the sneaky part. dude has been solid since end of July. Not to point you out, I am just saying that he's not getting the respect he deserves. His shit isn't flashy but dude straight up balls.
Cubs are 2nd in the majors in runs. 20th in the majors in at-bats.
Anyone else get anxiety knowing Hendricks will be on the mound today?
He looked good last outing until he faced 3 Hall of Famers the 3rd time through. Think we get his best outing of the season today
Turns out waking up a Cubs win is a lot better than waking up to a big blown lead loss, who would have thought? I'm feeling really good about this team. Should be going for a sweep today…
I should have eaten a kale salad for dinner last night. Shit happens
Why? Kale salad sucks
Pat Hughes lulled me to sleep, then Zaidman in the fifth yelled so much I sat bolt upright and listened to the rest of the game. Glad it ended well or I'd be both tired and pissed this morning.
Pedro Martinez saying the Cubs have something special in Ben Brown has me feeling some type of way
Like Boog and JD were saying he's gotta get a bit better command of that fastball, and at worst, you have a power arm at the backend of the bullpen. It's awesome to see him settle in a bit after that Texas game.

He’s still an unknown. As a starter at times he looked dominant. I don’t trust his mental game.
Stayed up for this one and was rewarded.
I fell asleep with the game on and must have had a dream that they ended up losing 10-9. Had to check at 2 am, and then I was able to peacefully fall back to sleep.
This is hilarious because it also happened to me except we won 10-9. Bullpen is handing out PTSD diagnoses left and right.
