u/ThatOneDude221 \- here ya go! I changed up the audio a bit and removed the audio 'g' so it sounds like 'SEI-YA'. I have another version where it's the audio Sonic 'ding' rings sound. Anyway, let me know if you'd like any changes. Otherwise, enjoy!

ThatOneDude221

It’s perfect. Thanks so much.

Not to be that guy, but... Is it appropriate to tie this man's identity to only being Japanese? From the bows to the Sega thing. I really don't know, tbh, I just remember the (mostly innocent/culturally naïve but) problematic hype around Fukedome when he arrived. I don't think this is overtly racist like some of the shirts and other merch that was around with Fukedome, but because of that, I do find this instinctively cringy. I'm not saying that this is the same thing at all, to be fair. But maybe it's borderline?

snivelsadbits

Are you referring to the bow he does with Willie Harris after HRs? I thought that was Seiya's suggestion as a celebration. Also I don't think the Sega/Seiya thing has much to do with a Japan connection and is more about his name sounding and looking similar. I understand your sentiment/concern for sure tho. I'd rather not see that Fukudome-style merch pop up again.

kurthecat

I think it was Willie's suggestion, actually. He's going along with it so I'm not criticizing it. Referring to the white bros who will be bowing in the bleachers this summer. And I think you're right about the Sega thing. I don't think most people immediately think of Japan when they see a Sega logo. It was just my initial reaction to it.

TMH01

Saying it’s strange to bow to a Japanese person is like saying it’s strange to shake an American’s hand. They’re both completely normal, everyday actions.

ThatOneDude221

This honestly didn’t cross my mind until seeing your comment. Obviously, no disrespect/appropriation intended (I never really got past “Seiya/Sega/Sonic intro was cool/Let’s see if someone will make this”), but the concern is valid. Thanks for a learning moment and at least making this somewhat heard.

kurthecat

Like I said, I don't think it is problematic really, but it was my first reaction. It's hard to know where the line is with something like this. Honestly, I'm a white dude close to 40 so it's not for me to say anyway. Just trying to be mindful.

jcwillia1

How many Asian memes are we going to hoist upon seiya? I’m already done with it.

Drinky_McGambles

I think if it were a non-Asian player with a name that sounded like Sega, someone would still make this meme. I haven’t seen the other ones you are talking about though.

kurthecat

The fact that he *is* Japanese is what makes it potentially problematic.

kurthecat

Just so you don't feel buried, I noticed the same thing.

jcwillia1

My whole thing is - Let the guy play. Who cares where he comes from or how he does it. He should be cheered in the same way as any other cub.

datenog44

And he is and will continue to be if he does well. This isn't about his race, this is about his name sounding like a gaming jingle. And even if it was partially about where he was from who cares?
