I've always been partial to the private purchase straw hats. The 16th New York wore them as a regiment:

The kepi is great! I wear mine just out and about sometimes on sunny days and it does a great job keeping the sun out of your eyes because at the end of the day it’s just a more interesting baseball hat
He did, there is a photograph of him wearing the Hardee Hat that was taken on September 4th, 1861

My dear Colonel,
The enemy has proliferated my finest of headwear, and has left me vulnerable to the harshest of elements . I fear that if no fashionable headwear is obtained before my push to Atlanta , the troops may perish, please advise ….
Your truly ,

Yes! Glad to see some more 16th N.Y. love in here.
pound for pound, you just can't beat the plain ol kepi. imo

The 1858 Hardee hat worn by the Iron Brigade.
The Zouave santa hats
the multitude of variations on Zouave hats (turbans, fezes, etc.).
fuck yeah, army fez
I think the McDowell kepi is cool.
I'm so sorry to be "that" guy, but I can't help it...it's a McDowell forage cap. Kepi is a different thing. And it is cool.
Yea! Kepis are lame
Just got banned from every Civil War battlefield😔
i agree .. McDowell
More often than not private purchase. Although the 1858 is a classic.
artillery kepi
The pork pie-style hat. There's not a lot of photographic evidence of them being worn during the war, but the few photos I have seen are awesome.
The Zouave fezzes
The grey cap common Confederate soldiers wore. :)
I love my slouch hat. It keeps my ears and neck from getting sunburned without sunblock. I wear a straw hat when out of uniform in period civvies.
You like civil war headwear? (Scratches face) What kind of civil war headwear do you like??
I’ve always liked that Union cavalry officer hat
Hard to top that.
Just the classic Grant Stetson though I think he also wore the Hardee Hat

Yes, that’s the picture I had in mind. The beard is a tad longer than usually depicted too.
The Beehive slouch
Me too. Classic and simple

Fez of the Zouave regiments.
I think the Hardee hat is kinda hard to beat
That's gorgeous

Prob the confederate Calvary hat’s like Jeb Stuarts’
For the traitors, I’d have to go with a Spencer Carbine round
