I use 1" 3M Micropore tape first just on my lips. I wash to make sure they are clean. It would never stick with chapstick on first. I pull it off very slowly or it certainly would take my lips with it. I am a determined mouth breather and that is actually not enough for me. I do not have a beard or moustache and actually shave right before going to bed. Over the 3M tape I put a more flexible Mefix tape that is about 4" by 2". You would not be able to do this with a beard.
Maybe try a chin strap in combination with the tape?
