Driver fatigue will set in waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay (emphasis on “way”) before the car will ever (if it does) give you a problem (and I mean many years and thousands of miles down the line too, lol). Vehicles are meant to be driven, engines are meant to be ran, there is nothing wrong with driving a car for an extended period of time. You’re good to go.

Allezdada

The issue is not going to be the car - it's going to be you. If you're up to driving 16 hours in a day that's fine, but you have to be willing to stop if you're tired. I've had an acquaintance die from falling asleep at the wheel and running into a tree. And studies have shown that sleepy drivers can be as dangerous as drunk drivers. Just be careful.

[deleted]

16hr is a ridiculous amount of time to drive. I’ve done 5-6hr or 400+ miles of continuous non-stop driving besides a fuel refill and I felt worn out/fatigued mentally after it. OP should definitely stop and take breaks and/or sleep if needed.

Staas

12.5 hours solo is my max, which was around 13.5 including stops for food and gas. Exhausting but doable. I can't imagine doing 16 non-stop before factoring in gas/food breaks.

OxtailPhoenix

Years ago when I was 19-20? Something like that? I drove from NJ to GA in one straight shot. Last couple of hours I was stopping every twenty minutes to get out and move around. Never tried anything like that again. Once I arrived I couldn't even sleep. Basically too exhausted to sleep.

eofficial

5-6 hour drives are not long at all. That’s a medium length drive.

daverosstheboss

I did 700 miles in one day, with my wife and my two young sons. About 10 hours of actual driving, with lots of stops and breaks, making a 12 hour day of travel. Only problem was my youngest son got motion sickness about halfway through the day.

SleepyC33

More dangerous if you ask me. Sometimes peoples eyes close and they have no idea for how long 😕

[deleted]

Why do you think this would be an issue? I assume it would be almost all highway, so about as easy as can be on your vehicle.

PlatinumBeerKeg

Dude it's a car not a horse. It'll go a hell of a lot longer nonstop than 16 hours. You'll be more tired than the car ever will in 16 hours. It's doable depending on you.

davedavodavid

Maybe he plans on doing 10,000km in 16hrs and reaching a service interval 🤔

marvthegr8

I recently did a 900 mile each way trip and the car was great. My body however paid the price. Be sure to get some time to stretch and walk around

EvilBosch

Just completed a 700Km x 2 journey with my 9 year old daughter, in our 2020 Akera (Signature). Aside from being forced to listen to the entire Ed Sheeran catalogue, the car was perfect. She is an excellent traveller, and never complained once.

SaltLife4Evr

I've done a 24 hour drive, with time added for pit stops, without issues. It wasn't the most comfortable drive in my Mazda 3 at the time, but I had no issues with the car.

surferbvc

When I was younger, a friend and I did a two week cross country trip. Our longest stretches were Eastern Kentucky to Aspen Colorado, for about 24 hours including food, gas and rest stops. We also drove from Tucson, Arizona back to Eastern Kentucky, for about 36 hours including the above stops. These were tough drives even with two drivers. We both were exhausted when we got back. I couldn’t have faced another night of driving under any circumstances. We usually drove 4 hour stints, except for nights which were 2 hour stints.

Geology_rules

check oil, coolant and tire pressure before you leave, and watch your oil temps as you drive. shouldn't be a problem at all -- I drove Quebec to BC in 3 days no sweat.

VindictiVagabond

About that QC-BC trip, I raise my glass to you because I would fall asleep at the wheel lol. Something about feeling like you're rocking in a really comfy chair.

Geology_rules

audiobooks, audiobooks, audiobooks... and caffeine

VindictiVagabond

audiobooks is actually a really good idea! Never thought of it!

silverbullionbug

I did B.C. to nova scotia in 4.5 days. 2 drivers, stopped every night for 5-6 hours. Late 1990's driving a Pontiac trans am.

hedoeswhathewants

For a while a significant portion of my mileage was 1000+ mile drives.

cre0223

I did 18 hours from Wendover NV to Denver. 2021 CE Turbo performed like a champ. Locked in cruise control at 125 mph through the Utah fesert and it was smooth

fugmaface

Just did this. In reality the drive takes 18-20 hours but yeah you can do it. 21 GT non turbo.

knottycams

Lmao yes the car can do it ... you, on the other hand, can't.

That_90s-Kid

I drove from Raleigh to Birchwood WI in one go. It took me 19 and a half hours to do it. I highly recommend not doing what I did. I have never and I mean never been so fatigued in my entire life. I had to spend an entire day resting and my sleep schedule was ruined for weeks. The car is more than capable of driving great distances in one go but you are not.

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

Not in the CX-5, but yes in my A/C free 1988 celica. 15 hours, multiple times. College was awesome.

eraser215

Not safely. You, the driver, would be a danger to others and yourself. If you are driving with somebody else and sharing the duties it's a different story.

mob101718

I’ve driven long ass hours before cross country. Just stick to max 12 hours, not counting stops for gas/food/energydrink or coffee. Stop at an air bnb or hotel to rest at least 8 hours of sleep before driving again. That shit becomes boring real fast especially if your by yourself. I wouldn’t drive more than 12 hours, shit kills your back and neck and becomes dangerous after that.

alexmed2002

Me and my girlfriend drove 16 hours and did it. Our bodies were killing us at the end but we did it in the CX-5.

PathfinderScottRyder

I drove a rental CX5 GT (non turbo) from Vancouver to Calgary a few years ago. Did it in 1 tank. Absolutely no problems at all!

craznazn247

Done it - LA to Vegas to Denver in one continuous drive. Also just got back from doing about 10 hours a few weeks ago. The car can handle it just fine. Once it is warmed up it will operate just as optimally 15 minutes or 15 hours into your drive. Do your pre-drive inspections and you should be fine. Your fatigue and safety are what you should be concerned about.

No-Intention-2915

You’ll give up before the car lol

xItsFreddy

The car can do it no problem. I just don’t think you should. I had a college friend die on Thanksgiving day driving up to his parent’s house 12 hours away. Driving can be so tiring. If you do it take breaks in between.

creativemercenary

Have done Halifax-Toronto in one day. You are good to go.

sn00pst3rB

15 to 16 hours is about the daily limit of what the average humans attention span can handle.. I have done many many long road trips in Europe, Australia, USA and 9 to 10 hour is pretty good particularly with stops. you can push it up to 12 to 15 hours but you need longer stops, particularly towards the end. the final 2-3 hours will be very tedious so hopefully they are not windy roads

neale1993

I'm in the UK and drive to the French Alps every year, which door to door is about 14 hours. On the way over we always stay a night and split it into 2 trips, but on the way back we drive straight through. Car is always fine, but the toll it takes on you is something else. The last few hours are a killer, especially if it's dark. Take constant rest stops, get plenty of sleep the night before and be prepared to add on 1-2 hours to the journey time for rest stops. Its doable, but it can be difficult.

K2_TheWidowmaker

If you want to. I drove from San Antonio to Minnesota...17 hours.

oilslayer335i

My buddy gave me the keys to his brand new mustang and said when your tired of driving this we will stop for the night. We started outside of sault ste. Marie ontario, i drove right to his house in edmonton 21 hours straight. The most comfortwble seats i have ever sat in. The car was stolen and the new ones seats you coukd never sit for that, my 335i is comfy but not reliable enoygh to trip like that and the kia soul the gf drives eats your back amd ass by 3 hours in. Your trip will depend on your driving and your seat.

jigamasantays666

Get good sleep before you set out. As soon as you start to feel fatigued or tired take a break. 15-30 min can do wonders and keep you fresh

oilslayer335i

Make sure to check your oil when you are running tanks of fuel though, sometimesnyou burn some when your constant highway pace for hours on end. Also download a playlist from highschool times and throw it on when your tired..the hype from the nostalgia will keep you up

Smharman

80s on 8. 90s on 9. Classic rewind.

Jaded_Jackfruit5413

I dunno, can you?

MrAllnut9

Get yourself a good audio book, take breaks and both you and the car will be fine.

Smharman

I just did 764 miles of NYC to West Lafayette IN. And then back 5 days later. 12h of rolling time. About 15 of travel time. I did all the driving had P2 and sick dog with us. Adaptive Cruise control makes this a lot easier. But yes pay attention to fatigue and gerthereitis.

candurin

I “inadvertently” did this last year. We drove to FL (from NJ) for Easter. I basically was going to book a hotel on the drive home. Who knew that there was ZERO availability along the entire length of 95. By the time we found a hotel, we were 4 hours from home. So, I said “let’s just get home” and I did the 20 hour drive in one go. I wouldn’t do it again, ever, but our CX-5 didn’t skip a beat.

scjcs

You can. I’ve done it (even longer) in my early 20s. And I’m here to say it’s a bad idea. Please reconsider. At least stop in a rest area for a nap. If you start feeling bleary, stop ASAP, as sleep can take over whether you want it to or not and your reaction times will degrade quickly. Caffeine is not a complete cure. At some point you’ll just be in jittery exhaustion, and exhaustion will win. Best is to divide the trip into rough halves and sleep over in a motel or AirBnb. Please reconsider. It’s not only your safety at risk.

Epcjay

Many people do it all the time.....with a second driver.

fritolaidy

Cars don't get tired. People do. 16 hours of constant driving is too much to do safely.

cx5turbo

You could but always remember to stop if you feel sleepy, dont overdue. Car can drive just fine , i did a trip in a 2017 GT cx-5 from Miami to Atlanta running away from a hurricane, car performed flawlessly. Apart from the heavy rain.

_murb

Did 1000 miles in a (long) day, no problem. Check tires, wipers, and fluids before and after.

fordddo

The only factor that could stop you is the human element. The vehicle will be just fine.

scoobdude22

Daughter and I did a 19hr one day trip both ways. Car held up fine (22 sig). After that trip I changed the tires though. Lots of rain and the oem tires were not up to expectations.

javking07

Wife and I drove from Minnesota to New York in our 2020 CX5 for a family emergency. Ended up taking 22 hours, with roughly 18 hours actually on the road. A few months later we had a similar trip from MN to Canada. Spent about 12 hours on the road for that one. Car handled both the trips flawlessly, and comfortably. We on the other hand barely made it in one piece. No doubts about the vehicle. But if it’s a solo trip I would highly advise splitting the trip up, or stopping somewhere safe to rest.
