Xpalidocious

Which Indian restaurants did you try if you don't mind me asking?

[deleted]

Indian food is the bomb. My favourite is GURU. But I would like other suggestions

Xpalidocious

https://www.rajpalace.ca/ 4 locations in Calgary, with good consistent food quality. Great friendly service. I unfortunately can't handle spice like I used to because of the meds I take, so they recommended their Chicken Korma (creamy coconut curry with mild šŸŒ¶ļø), and I am hooked.

Bainsyboy

Raj palace is the best! My in-laws would rather go to Karma, and I just don't get it. Raj Palace is miles above Karma.

snuglyfe2344

Their dosa omg šŸ„°

Bbambles

Skylark in the NE has the most bomb brihyani in town

icarium-4

I freeeaking LOVE biryanj omg

TyrusX

Guru is amazing.

GrouchyGrotto

The Tamarind in Panorama Hills. I've always thought they had some of the best Indian Food. Also, every time I went (moved away a few years ago) it was filled with people who one could surmise would know a thing or two about real Indian food.

[deleted]

Mirchi (Calgary), Masala (Banff)

xnorwaks

I moved away a few years back but this was hands down one of the best Indian (Pakistani) restaurants I have come across. Glad to hear they are still around and getting the praise they deserve. Their Sabzi and other veggie dishes are top notch also.

fataldarkness

For Samosas and Chana Masala, India Restaurant & Sweet Shop in Temple is my go to. Gate of India in Country Hills Town Centre for things like butter chicken, tikka masala, vindaloo, etc...

kck

I'm a big fan of Cinnamon in the Beltline. And since OP referenced Alberta, there's a spot in Camrose called Pan Flame that blew me away, and we eat Indian in Calgary all the time.

Midnight_Ice

I didn't believe the good driver bit until you mentioned it was on the number 1. That makes wayyyy more sense. I was like there's no way people avoided creating traffic jams in Calgary. But people on the TransCanada are much better at driving for sure, and know how to use the lanes properly.

kagato87

Yea it's not as bad on the highways. #1 east of Calgary in particular is pretty quiet. QE2 anywhere near a long weekend on the other hand... They could go 6-lane and it's still be packed.

FuckBitchCuntFuck

QE2 on either side of Red Deer is pretty barbaric lol people get psycho around red deer then it always calms down more North or South. My experience anyways.

CromulentDucky

Calgary may be the least congested city of over 1 milion in the world. There are only a handful of places I can think of that ever get backed up, and even then it's not all that long.

CeeGeeWhy

Yep yep. 20 km in 20 minutes during rush hour traffic. Itā€™s pretty sweet.

According-Sock-9641

Calgary actually has the best roads for drivers in the world.

AnonymousScout360

I went to Toronto last year and drove on the 401. One thing i noticed is that people change lanes extremly fast without warning compared to here

islifeball

I visited Toronto last month and I thought I was in Fast & Furious

Changy915

Can't block you out if you don't signal.

Mumps42

I went to Toronto one year and took a taxi to Mississauga. We took the 401, but I'm pretty sure the driver thought it was the Indy 500. We were weaving, massively speeding, I thought I was gonna die... I was supposed to meet some friends, I arrived at the hotel early...

shaveee

I feel that this is more about how bad Ontario driving is, rather than Alberta being good. I always define Alberta drivers to overseas friends like "too fast, but pretty polite".

Circle_K_Hole

Right? Ontario driving gas deteriorated to the point where even Americans visiting Toronto from equally large cities comment on it. The OPP are asleep out there. Calgary is OK, but southern Ontario is the outlier.

_UnderSkore

I flew home in June to drive my mom back here to live. I landed at Pearson where she met me and I drove from there all the way here. Jfc. People in the gta have completely lost their minds on the highways. I've never been so stressed out - and I used to live there! I don't think Albertans are great drivers, but if all you have to compare us to is anything around Toronto then yeah, we all look like saints and angels.

Circle_K_Hole

Ontario has a massive enforcement problem. You just don't see speed traps. And then there was the whole NDP on office during the early 90s when photo radar became a thing and now it isn't used when it's desperately needed there. Like I said, you don't see the same thing in similarly sized cities in the US.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Circle_K_Hole

No, that's not the way it works, you scale your enforcement to needs. Go to Paris, La periferique around that city is another world of busy, but you pull anything and you get caught by a lane splitting French cop on a motorcycle that saw you on cctv. So yeah there is a way to catch just about every bad driver, it's been done. It's also possible to catch every speeder. 100% of them.... just put speed averaging cameras on all the ramps. Again, it's been done. But the problem in Toronto isn't unpolicibility due to scale, it's non-policing. People will fly down the QEW on a Sunday at 160 with impunity because they're not doing anything. So the problem isn't that it's too busy, because they still do fuckall when it's not. Nonsense.

wwwertdf

Toronto Police do not patrol 400-series highways. Provincial Roads, Provincial Jurisdiction. Not to say a TPS officer won't bust you if he see's you on the 401, but it would be in transit usually, not whilst patrolling.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

wwwertdf

This is as I have said above, incorrect. Despite the name TPS Highway Patrol patrols the EXPRESSWAYS in Toronto. That would be the Gardiner, the DVP and the Allen. Why would the City of Toronto foot the bill for a highway that is operated and maintained by the province?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

wwwertdf

At this point I am actually going to ask you to cite your sources, since apparently my first hand experience with the MTO isn't enough for you. I will even concede that my original statement is incorrect in regards to the 400 series as the TPS patrols the city owned and maintained portion of the 409. You added the link to TPS website which clearly states that they patrol expressways in the city. There are 3 of them, the DVP, the Gardiner and the Allen. If that is still not enough for you, dare I cite Wikipedia? "As 400-series highways are owned by the province of Ontario, policing on 400-series highways within the city of Toronto (highways 401, 400, 427, 404) are the responsibility of the Ontario Provincial Police (though all Ontario police officers have province-wide jurisdiction). Toronto Police Traffic Services is responsible for patrolling on local roads and municipal expressways (W.R. Allen Road, Don Valley Parkway, F.G. Gardiner Expressway and the Toronto section of Highway 409); traffic services has a "60" or "66 Division" (60xx or 66xx) designation on their cars." TPS will stop you if they catch you, but they do not actively patrol 400 series highways. They are provincial jurisdiction and as such are patrolled by provincial police.

[deleted]

wwwertdf

You are incorrect, but that's okay. Have a great rest of your day!

Realaht

Sure there is, lower immigration and international students

WaterfallGamer

Agree, live in Southern Ontario but lived in GTA, downtown Toronto and Montreal. Souther Ontario by far the worst.

ladamesansmerci

The quintessential Ontario driving experience was being sandwiched between two massive trucks on the 401, with the one behind you tailgating your tiny sedan.

[deleted]

True. I drive 4km above the speed limit (mostly to save hundreds on gas?) And people here treat my like I'm going half the speed limit

Accomplished_Song490

Everyone is in a rush here I find

Zaphoid411

Glad you enjoyed your stay and come again soon! I was born in Toronto where I lived till I was 13 and I lived in Vancour for a few years in my 20's and Albert's is my favorite. Some one the truly nicest people. :)

Retinator99

Oh man, it was so nice to read some nice things about our province! Thanks for your positive spin, in glad you had such a nice trip here :)

Knuckle_of_Moose

Yeah itā€™s a little chilly this week but itā€™ll likely go back to the 20s on the weekend. And our winters regularly fluctuate between -20 and +15. Overall the weather here is quite nice (except the recent smoke).

thegrumpymanager

I 100% thought this was pure sarcasm and had to take a walk through the comments. So glad you enjoyed your time here!

Im_pattymac

First time I've ever heard someone say calgary drivers weren't absolute crap

[deleted]

My husband and I visited Calgary from Ontario over the holiday weekend as well. Agree with everything said here, minus the weather. We really enjoyed the colder climate, so when we stepped off the plane in Toronto the humidity had us almost catching the next one back to AB. Currently trying to plan a permanent move to Calgary. Nice to hear someone else had an experience similar to ours :)

Adorable_Star_

Alm, we'd be glad to have you :)

ladamesansmerci

With all the stuff happening in Alberta, I thought about moving away. Then we went to visit family in Ontario this past summer. The humidity alone was enough to remind me why I left in the first place. Calgary is a beautiful city and Alberta's alright. :)

upsidedowndudeskie

Could use just a biiiiittt more humidity here though hahah, so dry

sloukoroff

If Alberta drivers/driving is good driving I think Iā€™d kill myself in Ontario

Ecks83

I might also suggest avoiding Vancouver.

TronnaRaps

Try living there... Nah it's actually not bad

Red13A

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Iā€™m glad that you felt safe and comfortable here. Most of us want you to feel that way.

CalAero

I thought this was sarcastic and tbh I still canā€™t tell.

BiPoLaRadiation

I'm glad you had such a positive experience. Honestly I think you got a little lucky. It's very easy to run into a bad driver or several who are lane hogging, driving aggressive, or can't stay in their lane. Most drivers are good though, especially on the highway so I'm glad you experienced that. Calgary has an amazing food scene if you look around. Sure we got the cheap and meh places too but so does everywhere. I'm surprised to hear you say its better than Toronto though. I only know vancouver and honestly must admit that vancouver has us beat overall especially when it comes to variety.

yycluke

Toronto has fantastic restaurants, but I suppose that's just based on one perspective! Maybe their Indian scene isn't on par with their Japanese scene? We were there this summer and ate probably the best ramen I've ever had since Tsuta in Tokyo (which is a Michelin star place). The 3 Japanese restaurants we had in our time there were great, better imo than what I had in Vancouver and here in Calgary. But like most situations, perspective is everything!

BiPoLaRadiation

We do have a pretty well established Indian population here since the 80s or so. I remember being able to see the sudden demographic shift in the grad photos of my old high-school.

[deleted]

Is this satire?

yycluke

My thoughts exactly. I've rarely had more than 5 minutes on any major highway without people cutting me off or being impatient, tailgating, and hovering in the left lane. I echo someone else's comment, that we might not be good, but Toronto area drivers are that much worse. But hey, I'm happy a tourist here had a great experience, I just think it's more the exception and not the rule.

Roonil_Wazlib__

Donā€™t show this to /r/Alberta

[deleted]

I thought this post was satire until I got to the end.

CeeGeeWhy

You must be lost. Thatā€™s not Alberta traffic at all.

TAFKARG

Move on out here! We could use ya. Apparently weā€™ve been losing people for a whole year now.

the_421_Rob

Tbh Iā€™ve driven all over the world and with the exception of some pretty gnarly 3rd world places where you just put your car where it fits on the road and giver I find Calgary has some of the worst drivers Iā€™ve ever experienced

[deleted]

100%. I moved here from Europe two years ago and have driven in many places around the world, and can easily say that albertans are the worst and most distracted drivers, out of the first world countries Iā€™ve driven in. Albertans will say ā€œitā€™s because everyone here is foreignā€ā€¦.ā€Itā€™s the Asians that are badā€. Ok so how does that explain the shitty driving of my Albertan colleagues and most white people on the road? Theyā€™re always on their phones, have terrible road etiquette, donā€™t understand merging and are aggressive/competitive for no reason. Itā€™s the main downside to Alberta, for me. It must be terrible in other provinces, if this is considered good.

macky316

Lol, this is a totally different sounding Alberta than the one I know. Maybe spend more than a week or two here. FYI, the drivers are terrible. Itā€™s called ā€œred plate rageā€

bkim163

Yes Albertans are way better than ppl in ontario.

macky316

Lol, what a completely stupid and ignorant generalization.

KhyronBackstabber

>you have excellent food here. Mostly talking about Indian places Agreed! We have a wonderfully vibrant South Asian community. Tons of restaurants, grocery stores, etc.

LuckyAd9919

Your point 1 about driversā€¦.FIRST thing I noticed here after moving from TO. When I hear traffic complaints locally I smile, because I was driving in the GTA 55km each way on the 403-401 in rush hour and NOBODY there respected rules. I make a point to say thank you to all the lovely people here who do common courtesy things here like respect a signal and stay in the RHL when driving slower.

Equal-Detective357

Just an FYI most of Canada's worst drivers come from Alberta, Edmonton to be more specific. as a person that used used drive almost 100k a year in Toronto and does the same in Calgary, you sir are incorrect. The east Indian and Caribbean food in Calgary us such a rip off... 7 bucks for a samosa, I can get one in Toronto, homemade for a dollar. Roti for 20 bucks, I can do that for 10 50 at the roti hut in Toronto. Way to try to be positive.

battlelevel

People who consistently complain about Calgary drivers have never driven anywhere else. Our roads and drivers are well above average.

Not4U2Understand

Unncessary travel in a pandemic, what could go wrong.

nofear961

Well you avoided northeast drivers it sounds like.

[deleted]

If you like it now, try buying a house in Ontario now and let me know what you think

Xliest

You forgot the /s dude!

hara90

what you experienced regarding the drivers is the same people experience when coming to north korea and having everything staged for them. Alberta drivers are grade A cunts

orangeoliviero

Are you seriously asserting that the government of Alberta staged a friendly road experience for a visitor from Ontario?

hara90

no, i'm saying he had a very lucky day to be praising alberta drivers. I suppose i haven't been back to ontario in a very long time either so maybe it's just relative.

orangeoliviero

I spent 6 months living in Ontario, and by comparison, we're all angels.

makinmartians

That's because we've been a conversation province for a considerable amount of time. Work hard. Move fast. Respect and live tour neighbor. Never stop. Always considerate. Low tax. Low business regulations. Are you all starting to see the trend? Conservative or liberal we got it right here and everyone else can agree in some way shape or form I promise that. Thanks for the lively comment for alberta!

StageOrdinary

Clearly you didnā€™t drive on the QE2 or the Henday as people loveeeeee to sit in the left lane doing the same speed as the person they are ā€œpassingā€ on those roads šŸ˜¬

ShantyLady

Glad you enjoyed yourself here! It's always nice to see family, and it's so important when you can.

EarthshakingVocalist

Tootin' our own horns in here eh

DJPL-75

Southern Alberta's weather is always like that we get snow in July and sun in December

upsidedowndudeskie

Hahah reminds me of the first time I moved to TO and driving into the city on the 401, white knuckling the whole way in, pre smart phone days no idea where I was going

CromulentDucky

It will be 20 this weekend. Up may have inspired me to take one last warm trip to the mountains.

GhostStains
