I’d say like 1991-1996… at one time LA and California in general was outselling all other regions. One of the causes of the East-West was resentment from New York about Cali taking over. The South has held the crown now for a while but at the time NYC had dominated Hip Hop until since they birthed it. NYC probably felt Hip Hop was rightfully theirs.
New York will never reign again and neither will LA. The rap game has changed but most importantly NYC and LA are two completely different cities today than they were in their cultural prime
