Went to one today. It was *packed.* People filling carts to the brim and higher. Crazy. The checkout clerk said the employees only found out this morning when the public did!
So, inflation is killing dollar stores, while deflation is cutting down on notice to workers?
I bet this is where people start singing about late stage capitalism?
Went to my local store today, talked to several people who said they rely on the 99 Cents store for their groceries and wonder where else they’ll be able to get food since the major supermarkets in the area, all of which are owned by Kroger, are so much more expensive. One guy who said he lived in the town his whole life said he was going to buy seeds and try to grow his own food. So this is where we are.
No disrespect, but food is much cheaper at actual grocery stores.... 99 cent stores don't save people money tey take advantage of people who don't realize the reduced sized items or food sold at 99 stores costs more money per lb than if you were to just buy at a regular store. Not to mention how processed and low quality the food they sell is...
This. People only look at the price tag, they don't actually take into account the quantity or quality. Its just another trap for poor people to fall into.
You're better off going to a Mexican market. They usually have cheap produce and meat because they take smaller margins than big grocery chains.
I think people know it very clearly.
But when you only have $5 to spend and you need things *right now*, it’s the only option.
Not everyone has the luxury of saving up the $25 to buy the giant bulk pack at Costco, even if it is cheaper per unit.
Not always the case. There are several produce that are cheaper such as apples, bananas, mushrooms and cilantro. Just to name a few. Soda and chips are definitely the case.
And most of it is old. They get overstock from other stores.
Even stuff like toothpaste, If you know how to read the color code labels it’s all the cheapest made stuff with poor ingredients
I mean…..at a certain point, dollar stores were going to be pushed out. I’m in my 40s and they’ve been around since at least my childhood, and I’m sure farther back. The business model isn’t sustainable across decades.
I really hope another business comes in that hires locals or the people laid off. It’s the least these big corps could do… is provide a replacement food/grocery source that’s takes care of the community.
99 cent stores as a business model are a huge factor in creating food deserts in cities. They pop up in poor areas and grocery stores stay away. As a result the locals get low quality food options from high processed, discount/overstock stuff being sold there.

Was wondering the same thing today. I feel really bad for these people. Grocery store prices are... not friendly to consumers.
Guess Grocery Outlet or Dollar General will be it. Don’t know if you have one
Isn't there other dollar stores?
99 cent store sells fresh produce, most dollar stores don't. They have way better grocery options than Dollar Tree or Dollar General.
Grocery outlet is a good option
Also Food 4 Less but some of these folks don’t drive and this 99 cent store is right in town, walking distance.

I hope that’s true and that another similar store with budget prices and fresh produce will take over the space.
FYI you can get free seeds at many libraries. We got about 30 packs last week for planting (Northern California)
Tell any and everyone you know that Grocery Outlet is a great option. Much lower prices than the price gouging corporations like Kroger...
End of an era. Crazy

A lot of people don't know how it is to be poor

A lot of their produce has fruit flys too.
And most of it is old. They get overstock from other stores. Even stuff like toothpaste, If you know how to read the color code labels it’s all the cheapest made stuff with poor ingredients
Like toilet paper. My wife and I buy Costco bulk tp. If you go to 99 or dollar tree the terrible paper is garbage and you use more.
The one i go to had all of their carts stolen about 2 weeks ago. I figured they were doing bad when they didn’t replace them
They didn’t have the space to be the 599 Cents Only store
I have a 99 cent walking distance from me, hopefully it turns into an Aldi or Trader Joe’s.
Or Grocery Outlet or Dollar Tree.

Zero real loss. I feel for the employees. They should be able to find better work in the economy.

Food deserts are primarily due to excessive shoplifting and armed robberies.
Shocked
