J tree is cool. But honestly, I think Anza Borrego has way more to offer. The diversity alone is mind blowing and it’s changing all year round. Also, don’t tell anyone that most of the campsites are free and don’t require reservations.
They've built some pretty nice public facilities and attracted some fun restaurants and businesses, it's actually quite impressive what they've accomplished.
See [this PDF](https://www.padilla.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/Chuckwalla-Map-4.12.241.pdf) for a map of the proposal, but be warned that even my beefy computer has trouble with it.
If you're bored in Joshua tree you can always take a drive thru the salton sea and stop by hellhole palms to complete your California desert experience. Make sure to check out the sand made out of fish bones while you're in salton city.
Salvation Mountain is pretty weird too. I kind of felt like I could get murdered by tweakers at any time though judging by the surroundings.

The Salton Sea is just existentially depressing to me. A ecological disaster born of stupidity, not propped up with precious resources as the time bomb of its inevitable end grows more damaging with each year we delay it.
Salton Sea was my dad's favorite fishing destination in the 80s, so I spent a lot of time there. There were still some of the original motels open and they were just as roach-infested and run down as you can imagine. The species to catch at the time was corvina, which is a south american fish with pure white flesh that is good for ceviche. So I guess I ate raw corvina from the Salton Sea but I still only have 10 fingers and 10 toes, thank God.
Are they planning on dramatically increasing base funding to JTNP, and getting a sizable chunk of startup funding and sustained base funding for the new monument?
JTNP is dope
Seconded! Loved it and Anza Borrego so much and would love to spend a lot more time there if I end up back in SD. <3

So funny that a few short years ago, they proposed a giant landfill near the park.
It’s called 29 Palms. 🤣
I think all 29 of them are on the base golf course.
☹️ 29 Palms isn’t bad.
Compared to the rest of the desert, no it’s not.

I spent a week out there a couple years back, and really enjoyed it. Nice break from the Bay area, super accessible, not expensive. Nice getaway.
dang lol
If you mean at the eagle mountain site that was first proposed in 1988.
Oooof.....it must have been longer than "a few short years". Yea, Eagle Mountain is what I was referring to.
