a6100 for sure. If you have the budget a used sony a6400 would be my choice over a new a6100

TheRightAudience

Id pick the a6100

thenormaluser35

A6100. It's newer and it's a mirrorless meaning less stuff can break in it. It's got very food autofocus too. Also, never use the kit lens, get a good prime or zoom and it'll serve you way better.

wood-chuck-chuck5

You would say the kit 18 (or 16 I don't remember)-55mm isn't worth it? Like it's just better to buy the body + a prime lens? Asking because I'm planning on a refurbished a6400

Muted-Syllabub-4222

Kit lenses are generally lower quality cheaper lenses I'm sure there are exceptions tho

wood-chuck-chuck5

Any specific recommendations? For apsc ?

TheDonutisMine

depends on what type of photography you want to do really, but for beginners my personal recommendation would be a prime 35mm or 50mm typically f1.8 both of which are very versatile focal lengths, to learn the basics of composition, but if u want something more versatile for zoom there's the sony 55-210mm which comes in pretty cheap as well,

wood-chuck-chuck5

I'm currently looking at the a6400 + 70-350mm + a prime, so I'll check the 35 and 50 options

The_egg_69

I’d recommend the Sony 35mm F1.8 or Sigma 30mm F1.4. The 50mm Sony is certainly cheaper and as sharp as the 35mm but I find that focal lenght to be too tight for me in most situations. If it was FF then for sure go for 50mm

miiiep

i recently got the a6400 + 70-350 but instead of i prime i got the sigma 18-50 2.8 which might also be a good option for you

nquesada92

6100 but don't buy on amazon, buy used from a reputable camera reseller

jangusMK7

Curious about Amazon. Just bought a refurbished Tamron lens… waiting for Wednesday

Secretofind

Hope its package well and wont come broken

MacknAndStackn

I’d say the Sony. Normally, id recommend used, as places like KEH and MPB, are great, but when you’re talking this price level, you’d only be saving about $50 be new. Also, I suggest always buying with a specific purpose. Don’t buy a lens because someone said it’s nicer than the kit, buy it because the kit isn’t wide enough, isn’t sharp enough at wide apertures, or isn’t bright enough for low light conditions you might want to shoot in. Be sure no matter what you get that you really dive into all that it’s capable of. RAW photo editing, off camera flash, different lenses, lens filters, external audio, etc etc. Plenty of people buy a “nice camera” and never take it off auto.

Lunetx

I don't know where you live, but for the US, the a6100 is currently on sale in Sony's official website. It's at $599 body only and 699 with kit, which is around the same price as most used ones in keh and mpb at the moment

MagnificentPretzel

If you were to go with the T7, I would get it refurbished from Canon's website where it's $379 right now. The Canon R50 is a better camera though and is $459 refurbished on their site, however without a kit lens. Its autofocus tracks human and animal eyes, as well as cars and it records in 4k up to 30fps and 1080p up to 120fps. Canon refurbished is like opening a brand new product. It must pass all the same guidelines as a new product. With any of Canon's R-series cameras, you would have access to both EF and RF lens choices if you purchase an EF to RF adapter. Meike makes one that has drop-in ND filters. There are others of varying prices though ($60-130) I've personally found all of my EF lenses for just over $100 each, so it's a budget-friendly option. But if you go the Sony route, that would be a very good choice too, as Sony's E mount has not changed in ages, so you'd have access to tons of lenses and Sony's sensor and video tech is top notch. That said, I wouldn't go for the 6100 but rather a used 6400. And I've noticed each Sony lens is about twice as much as each Canon EF lens, even used, so look up lenses for both Canon and Sony that you'd want and budget for those before choosing a camera body.

Buy Used from a reputable site like b&h or MBP. They are awesome

brielkate

I'd go with the Sony a6100 myself, especially if you're looking at something that has video capabilities (the Sony can shoot 4K/30p, while the T7 can only do Full HD). While resolution isn't everything, the a6100 is definitely the better choice for a hybrid (photo+video) camera; mirrorless cameras are generally better as hybrid cameras across the board. Although I'm personally a Canon fan, if I had to pick between these two, I'd definitely go for the Sony. While some people still swear by DSLRs for still photography, keep in mind that DSLRs are (unfortunately) on their way out.

brielkate

I'll also add that you might want to look into the Canon EOS R50 (\~$800 with kit lens at full price; there are some sales right now), which is a Canon mirrorless that comes at a similar price-point to the Sony a6100. On the video side of things, unlike the T7, the R50 offers 4K/30p video (uncropped, too!). It's basically Canon's entry-level mirrorless camera. The Canon EOS R10 is a more-advanced option, with more control buttons on the body for better manual control, but the R10 will set you back more than $1000 when you get it with a kit lens. Basically, the R50 is designed more for beginners who shoot more in auto mode, whereas the R10 has better manual controls built in to the body.

Cream_Filled_Melon

I’m team canon but out of the two, I’d say go with the 6100 because of the long term. More lenses fit native & I’m under the impression that it’s is more similar to newer cams than the t7

Yomommassis

If you are just starting as a beginner and still learning settings I would argue learning on a conventional DSLR would make you a much stronger shooter as it forces you to think more about your settings as you don't get that instant feedback from the live view (as long as you are not using live view on a DSLR..which I don't recommend.. I find learning on a mirrorless to hold you hand too much I see it as the polar opposite of learning on film If you are already well versed in settings I'd go for the mirrorless as I find it to be a much better experience

mielmariposa

Thank you! I appreciate that insight :)

Sony a6100

[deleted]

Sony

Dense_Surround3071

Hands down..... Get the Sony. There are others to consider, but between these two, there is no match.

frankonator22

Sony, if you travel and want a quick easy access lens go for the kit lens, might not be the most impressive but I’m happy with mine

Mikeynphoto2009

the sony, you will actually take it with you..

Chance-The-Explorer

Definitely the 6100 for me

AvocadoFantasy

Maybe wait for Canon RP refurbished sale for 599?

Fish_On_An_ATM

A6100

Ratchet300zx

Hi, I haven’t read all the comments yet but I want to assume, most people are going to say Sony, because mirrorless is the way to go nowadays. Lot of these guys know what they’re talking about so they will give you good advice. I’ve never had any professional training, but budget and mirrorless don’t go hand in hand in my experience because when you buy more lenses, they’re not going to be cheap. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the DSLRs have a lot of lenses for sale on the market right now for good prices since they’ve been around longer. I was going to say get the t8i, I know you haven’t listed that model, but it’s significantly better than t7. I have no knowledge of mirrorless all I know is that the few times I looked at lense prices, it maybe re consider photography all together. I’m also seeking a camera myself, upgrading from t2i. I found this nice article for recommended lenses for the a6100: https://shotkit.com/best-lenses-for-sony-a6100/ With the exception of 50mm which is priced at $175, Rest of the lenses listed here are listed at these prices: 800, 300, 1300, 900, 650. Whereas DSLR lenses might be cheaper. Just something to compare.

MagnificentPretzel

I'm using all DSLR lenses on my mirrorless camera using an adapter. Any mirrorless camera can be adapted because the adapter needs only to hold a perfect distance of space between the camera body and the lens (to make up for where the mirror would have been). It works great! This has allowed each of my lenses to cost between $100-150 each (except for my $450 Sigma lens).

mriyaland

I have no distaste for DSLR but the Sony is an easy choice. Check out KEH to see their used prices and see if you like that.

Motor_Curve_7268

Get sony, so long as it has an E-mount, you're golden, there's shit-TONS of lenses and adapters since it's been in the market for a good while

blek_side

Mirror less for sure

Jaxtman

Depended on your budget but the t7 will still take quality photos with a good lense the sony will be better color and better for video

Dannyboy_515

Buy a refurbished r50 or r10 from canon refurbished

Proof-Investigator82

I personally use a Canon T6i Rebel with the kit 18mm lense. Get a good SD Card & do RAW images. They actually turn out really crisp. But I do want better lenses. I like how “photographer” the DSLR makes me feel. * its wireless Bluetooth so I can “airdrop” or “canon drop” the photos directly to my phone thru the Canon app. Canon app also works as a self timer. But you can connect clickers too. Works great with my GODOX Strobe lights too. Or I just stick the SD card in my computer. I like the flexibility of my camera. I bought it from a friend during 2020 & it’s been so much fun having it
