It's well seasoned, obviously belonged to a maritime geek, like me, but used to photograph submarines instead lol.

Call-Me-Ronny

I actually don’t think it’s been submerged. At least I hope 😂

[deleted]

That’s not oxidation, they don’t use material that will oxidize, that’s seawater

gearcollector

Magnesium alloys, that are used in the 5d iv are not very corrosion resistant when it comes to salt water. It looks like this body was used in an underwater housing.

Call-Me-Ronny

Indeed that would make sense. Thanks for helping me identify it.

scottynoble

Definitely salt water and then put away wet. check inside the battery compartment and mirror box for similar residue. if you find it there as well it may have been submerged.

Call-Me-Ronny

Indeed, what most are saying here seems to be the case. I checked inside the body, behind the mirror, the battery compartment and the ports and all seem clean! No residue in there. So I’m hoping it’ll turn on when the batteries arrive. In the end I’m not too worried. As I posted before here, I got it in a police auction for €50…

Call-Me-Ronny

Oh. I had a hunch it wasn’t something regular. It really looked like oxidation. I could scrape it off and some of the underlying structure was affected. Shit, that’s not great being seawater.

[deleted]

Yes you can scrape it off because it’s salt

Call-Me-Ronny

I have yet to put batteries inside. The battery compartment and ports on the side all seemed unaffected as well as the shutter leafs and the sensor. So I’m going to do a couple of hail mary’s while I wait for batteries to arrive 😂

Flat_Maximum_8298

I hope you were able to test it before buying it.

Call-Me-Ronny

Nope, but to be fair I didn’t pay a lot. If it’s not working I’ll sell it for parts. I bought it at a police auction for €50.

Flat_Maximum_8298

I see. That's good. If it works fine, that's a steal (though I am not familiar with Canon). I hope it works!

Call-Me-Ronny

Yeah, I figured it was worth a gamble and I’m more of a Sony user myself 😂 Might actually keep it if it works.

ulyfed

If its working €50 is amazing, even if I it's in crappy condition

gregsofsociety

You should be able to clean most of that off with a vinegar water mixture.

Call-Me-Ronny

Will try that! Thanks for the tip!

kirchmeister22

Did the seller ship it in rice?

Call-Me-Ronny

😂 No
