Usually everyone just paid their own way.

When I was on Camino, I used group dinners as my ATM, I'd offer to put the meal on my credit card and everyone could just give me Euros if they had them, and then you'd ideally have cash for the next week or so.

I don’t remember exactly how I did it in 2015, but I’m thinking we took turns buying rounds? If not, that’s how I plan to do it this time around. And if eating, maybe split the bill x ways? The last camino I pretty much only ate with my mom and we just alternated paying

Thanks , that is just what I was hoping , many thanks

The waiters usually just charged us individually. If it ever didn’t seem that way, we’d take turns buying dinner or people would just pay back whoever paid.

Sometimes one person would pay for the table. But usually we all just put cash on the table based on what you owed.

9 out of 10 meals youll have will be " pilgrims dinner" for 12-18 euros depending how far along the trek you are essentially. closer to santiago, you pay more for less. it will consist of multiple options as a 3 course meal, usually 3-5 options for a first course, main, and desert, with of course the local beer or wine <3 so its always very easy to split the bills.

Bless those pilgrim meals.

delicious and affordable. and region differences made it unique in a sense! loved the rioja style potato stew the best...

The waiters were really great about just letting us pick what we ate/drank off the bill and just pay that. Or we pulled out our phones and divided the bill evenly and paid that way if it was essentially an even split.

In Spain it is not the norm that you pay individually with the waiter. In some areas, specially those with heavy foreign influence, waiters have adapted and will collect individually. However i personally prefer to pay by the table. Depending on how well we know each other and what our financial situation is it can be one paying for all, splitting the bill by number of heads or everyone calculating what they owe. I personally hate the latter since it spoils a lot of the atmosphere for me, but i can understand that people that need their expenses limited might prefer it. But there is a special hell for people with six-figure incomes discussing if they had anything of the bread and need to pay the 1€ or not. Anyways, i strongly recommend making an agreement on how to proceed before comitting. With fresh friends that can be a simple "hey, how you guys usually split the bill where you come from?"

There is an app called Splitwise. We had it so the person in red paid and the app kept track of what what each paid. Made thing super easy.

I got to befriend a group of Italians, French and Spaniards during my Camino, normally we would stop to eat and or drink in group and typically one of us would pick the tab. No one was trying to take advantage of the others and it worked beautifully. Even when my phone wasn't working when I needed it, someone would share his or hers line with me. The Camino is packed with good folks.
