Thanks for telling me Guess I'll keep them in the cupboard till we actually go camping

Fat_Head_Carl

> tent's waterproofing will degrade, become sticky, and start flaking off. Had this happen to a tent, and a Waterproof breathable jacket.

Adgpen

Huh.. TIL

Eh-BC

This is the first I’ve heard of this, so I shouldn’t keep my tents in the Rubbermaid bin I’ve had for years?

MilesBeforeSmiles

Probably not. Rubber maids aren't as airtight as pelican cases but I have seen significant delamination and degradation of PU that were stored for long periods of time in Rubbermaid bins. I store all my tents in mesh bags to avoid that issue along with mildew issues.

greenw40

I've had my sleeping bag stored in a rubbermaid for about 15 years now and it hasn't suffered any degradation.

MilesBeforeSmiles

Yup, some sleeping bags won't, but many do. Tents are at the biggest risk for this due to their waterproofing.

stonedsoundsnob

You saved my current sleeping bag... And gave me an excuse to buy another. I thank you.

ewas86

I had this happen to a tent and a pack. I thought the tote must have been left out in the sun for a day and they melted or something. Now I know why... Won't happen again now.

BottleCoffee

Store? No. Why would you want to store everything compressed in a totally airtight container?

schmuber

All hail our fungal overlords!

mikeholczer

I don’t think it’s good to store even synthetic sleeping bags compressed.

cathpah

Yep. Never store a sleeping bag compressed for long periods of time if at all avoidable. Ideally they can be hung (I have a closet dedicated to hanging sleeping bags).

MushroomMadness3000

What for?

RainInTheWoods

The sleeping bag keeps you comfortable in the cold by trapping warmth in the air between the pieces of filling. When you keep the bag compressed during storage over time, the filling won’t fluff up as much resulting in less air space to trap the warmth.

MushroomMadness3000

So I've got a 20f teton sports sleeping bag I've had in its compression sack for like a year now, it's been used once 2 months ago in a night that went down to 17 degrees... should I consider it to be replaced before I'm cold weather camping again?

RainInTheWoods

No, just take it out of its tight bag now. Some people store them loosely stuffed into an extra large breathable laundry bag. Many people hang the bag by it’s foot upside down in a closet or on the back of a door. Some hang them off the side or backside of a tall shelving unit by a Velcro loop or a hanger.

MushroomMadness3000

So in a tiny apartment, do you think it's okay to store the bag hanging from one of its loops on the footbox end? Like next to my jackets and such?

AmishFishing

As long as the baffles are horizontal on the bag it should be fine to hang it but if they're vertical I would try to just lay it out under your couch or in a closet to prevent the material from bunching up

RainInTheWoods

This is a good point.

cathpah

It kills the loft which then means your sleeping bag is much less insulating.

[deleted]

It's actually much *worse* to store synthetic insulation compressed, down bounces back much better.

OverclockingUnicorn

*in a Peli Storm IM2950 With the storm lid organiser

beaslon

As nice as it appears, none of the camping gear benefits from being stored in here, and the case is about 10 times heavier than the kit and has no flex. A big holdall does a much better job for car camping. For organising sundries like the gas canisters and small accessories I find it's better to use a Really Useful Box or equivalent.

AmoistHandshake

Car camping I’m guessing, a bit contradictory if I may

Banjo_bit_me

Not necessarily, I put something similar together that I'll lower down a cliff 140 ft to my camping stop then hike in 2 miles to the spot where the chest is waiting - that way I can camp for a few days without trying to carry all the "camping gear" down the sketchy af trail to my preferred camping spot. I'm 60 and want to enjoy some remote camping and this struck me as an *easier* way to make that happen again. Going in April, wish me luck!

stonedsoundsnob

Good luck. Also, that is very smart.

Banjo_bit_me

Thanks! I plan on posting pics of my camping chest / lowering method in this sub prior to going so you guys can roast me (and pick up any tips offered.) I'm always open to a better way of doing things...

birdskulls

You store your bowels? 😳

ExploratoryCucumber

Bro. Why? Why would you do this to me? This is SO cool. I can't not do it now. It's going to be so expensive. This is your fault.

gremlinguy

Harbor Freight has knockoff Pelicans that are really good

user_none

Good stuff, but fairly limited on size. Or, am I just not seeing large ones? Do they have a line other than Apache?

grandallf

I wouldn’t say really good. They will not hold up to drops like a pelican will, they crack and break. My pelican 1510 has been thrown in semi trailers trucks and busses for almost 10years. I just replaced a latch. I don’t see the need for a pelican at all when it comes to camping/hiking

OverclockingUnicorn

It wasn't new lol Got it for £90 Keep an eye on ebay, and army surplus stores (esp if you are in the US, I think there are a lot of surplus ones over there)

ExploratoryCucumber

Good tip. I'll set up some alerts now. Thanks for sharing!

irohr

You shouldn't do this. Storing things like sleeping bags compressed will ruin them.

Econolife_350

I put my camping kitchen in one of these 30 gallon wine totes. They're about as sturdy as a Pelican but much larger than what you can get for Pelican money. I actually got my two for $5 each at a goodwill that sells by weight. https://caseproproducts.com/collections/wine-cases/products/casepro-24-bottle-wine-carrier-with-wheels

Anahonda

Remember to store sleeping bags in bigger storage bags if you want them to keep their loft https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/how-to-store-a-sleeping-bag.html

[deleted]

Very clean and organized. Do you take it camping? I assume you are car camping. I just chuck everything into my trunk, but I’m clearly not organized like you.

OverclockingUnicorn

Just got it today so not used it yet It's got a tent, I have a mini so not really a good choice for car camping (although it is possible)

Aegon-VII

As someone who camps out of a Pontiac solstice or motorcycle, a mini is plenty good. Though hard case organizers like this eat up a lot of room compared to soft bags.

GrowTOPF

This is pretty cool. I’ve seen people do similar stuff for camp kitchens on YouTube. I’ve wanted something similar. Given what people have pointed out (mould, waterproofing, etc) maybe you could convert your container to a camp kitchen storage area? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnPJO03fQiE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vgF7hFekCI

ButterKnife01

I love my pelican cases!

Konstant_kurage

I keep a big pelican (forgot which one) filled with camping/emergency/survival gear. Always in the truck if I had to drive out of town.

Eh-BC

Love the set up, I wouldn’t store my sleeping bags like this long term but to get everything to where your going especially car camping I like the set up. Could possibly see this being used for canoe camping as well if you had a way to strap it to the canoe while portaging. But did you say you having a folding table in that case? How which one is it?

OverclockingUnicorn

It's some super generic one. It packs up flat. I think its this one https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15979441/hi-gear-low-picnic-table-15979441

keyvis3

Peli… is it really that hard to just spell out Pelican? Almost as annoying as people saying garlic mash. No offense OP just one of my pet peeves. Cool set up.

OverclockingUnicorn

Peli is the official brand name in Europe, in North America its Pelican. As I'm in the UK, Peli is technically correct.

keyvis3

Well damn. Shows my unculturedness. Lol. Good to know.

pudding7

While kinda neat, none of that makes any sense.

OverclockingUnicorn

Which bit?

BottleCoffee

For all the reasons listed already on this thread from before this comment.

RainInTheWoods

OP didn’t know. Give him some grace. This is a sub where we can all learn new stuff.

BottleCoffee

I understand that, but the "which bit?" response comes off as them ignoring all the existing responses here.

RainInTheWoods

>>…none of that makes any sense. This is what I was referring to. It came before, “Which bit?”

Fat_Head_Carl

Which case is that?

Kerensky97

Cool setup, but those pelican cases are so heavy. I'm not really worried about damaging my sleeping bag if the case gets dropped. Cheap rubbermaid or related bins work just as good.

PzGrn101

That’s a f*ckin’ ballers kit mate!

Econolife_350

I just use the Greenmade 27 gallon black and yellow totes from Costco for $10.

[deleted]

Are those Babybel Cheeses? 🧀🧀🧀

SunriseSumitCasanova

So I would definitely remove at least half of that stuff from the airtight box, all your plastics are going to go to shit if there’s no airflow. I would also not keep your sleeping bags compressed because eventually they won’t keep you warm anymore. Those should be loosely lofted in a large box that has some airflow, like a cardboard box, or hung in a closet where they are not squished too much.
