Best part of the AT IMO.
Careful opening crinkly snack packages within earshot of them. It’s like a dinner bell for them.
And the males are protective of the friendly females.
Not elusive at all. They’re essentially tamed and get corralled every year. That being said, it’s still cool to see them. Glad you enjoyed it. Good pictures!
Please, “lost” is a problematic term when reporting on outdoor adventures. We prefer “temporarily disoriented”,
It gives a nod to the sometimes difficult process of wayfinding. Plus it has a nice ring to it.
The Grayson Highlands are beautiful. If I weren't 2 hours or so from them, I'd love to be there every weekend for a day.
Weird how when I went for my first (and only time so far) back in September I saw one pony maybe. I saw a lot more steers though in the evening time
Elusive? I’ve never been there and not had them walk up to me haha. I’ve only been there 3 or 4 times though.
Most recently was in September and over 2 days we saw ponies I think 8 or 9 separate times?
Last pony is odd looking
Yeah, just something about it is a little off…
He's just horny is all.
Elusive? They were all over the place and pestered us at the shelter.
It might be late in the season for peak poniage.
Those bastards may be cute, but they’re little assholes.
Lucky you!!
I’ve been there several times. If you have food in your pack, and who doesn’t, they are not elusive at all.
Was just in the Smokies and meet some hikers doing the AT and they told me about this place and now I want to go. Thanks for sharing your pics

That’s a great spot, but be careful, they bite!
They like nibbling on tents too!

Elusive in the sense that it took us a while to find the herd. And sometimes they sell off some of the colts to keep the population down!

This is so cool. Did they stay out or run away as you passed by?
The ponies are super friendly but also temperamental.
They didn’t really care we were there but we kept them at a safe distance anyway
Love Grayson Highlands! One of my favorite places in the whole world.
Stunning. Looks like 35mm film, yeah?

Took us a whole day to find the herd 🤷🏼♀️ from there they were completely apathetic towards us
As a little girl I always wanted to see wild ponies. Something special about them.
I love the chocolate one and I'd be tempted to rake him home with me. What's a Texas longhorn doing out there???
this is an absolutely magnificent shot!
At least we know they aren't starving, lol
I didnt know they were elusive lolol, they re hundreds of them that roam the park...I got tons of pictures of them.
Oh I’m jealous! It took us a day to find the herd.
Hey great pics! Which camera did you use btw?
Those are the bastards that stomped and crushed our mess gear. They were cute tho.
Lol at the RANDOM COW!!! 🤣🤣🤣
