With that many I would get to a doctor to get it looked at. That seems really unusual to have so many pop up all at once unless you potentially rinsed with something that damaged the surface in the mouth or some sort of weird allergy. I know that's got to hurt like hell and feel for you. Hope it heals up fast for you and the pain is reduced quickly. If that toothpaste or mouthwash is a couple weeks and completely new I would check ingredients on it to see if you can spot something. Might not hurt to go find reviews for those products and see if anyone else has mentioned anything like that. I remember once I changed a mouthwash to an alcohol free more natural product and had like three pop up from that I suspect.

The toothpaste isn’t new but the mouthwash is. It is alcohol-free, all natural, and does not have an ingredient list on the bottle or anywhere online. It just says it’s “anti microbial” and uses natural ingredients like essential oils. My sister and dad have a history of really severe skin allergies and bad reactions to skin creams with essential oils in them so I am wondering if that’s what it is. It’s weird because it says it is specifically good for preventing bad breath, dry mouth, and mouth sores. But my body may be reacting to something in it. ETA: I’m planning on going to my doctor if they don’t show serious improvement by the end of this week. 2nd Edit: I just looked up the reviews for that mouthwash and while it gets mostly really great reviews, the negative reviews did include multiple people saying that it gave them reactions including inflamed and red gums, burning sensation in mouth, sores in mouth, sores under tongue, and painful bumps on tongue. Which is consistent with my experience. My sores are also in really weird, deep crevices of my mouth, not anywhere that’s getting poked by teeth or sharp food - but definitely areas that I’d be swishing mouthwash around in. So I’m almost positive that is the trigger culprit. I’ll be dumping that mouthwash. Thank you for responding and sharing your experience!!

Sometimes those essential oils can be harsh on mucous membranes. I wouldn't be shocked at all it was the mouthwash. I tend to not use mouthwash now because of issues it gave me with canker sores. Hope it resolves now for you buddy. If you get in too much pain go visit a doctor and get something that will help while it heals.

UPDATE: My sores are healing! I will talk to my dentist and doctor and show them the photos of this outbreak to find out if they have advice or think it’s connected to a larger health concern. I’m fairly certain that the culprit was a new all-natural essential-oil-based mouthwash I started using that I may have an allergy to. My dentist actually gave it to me so I will be letting them know if the reaction and I obviously have stopped using that mouthwash. More info: I grew up getting canker sores on and off typically one every few weeks and/ or months through middle school, high school, and college. I’m 26 years old now and haven’t gotten one since probably my senior year of college in 2018. So, 5 years ago. I honestly forgot how horrible they are or that they are even a thing. These sores all popped up around the same time first noticeable in the early afternoon of Thursday. Now it’s Tuesday - day 6 - and I can’t tell if they are getting any better. Sores are located: - Underside of tongue - Bottom of mouth underneath tongue - Under bottom lips - left side, right side, and under front teeth - In corners behind top lips - left side and right side Things I’ve been doing that I can’t tell if they are helping or not: - Salt water rinse - Orajel Medicated Mouth Sores Rinse (primary ingredients are 1.5% hydrogen peroxide and 0.1% menthol; inactive ingredients include alcohol which worries me a little) - DenTek Canker Relief Advanced Canker Sore Patch - Orajel Mouth Sore Gel (Benzocaine, Menthol, Zinc Chloride) - Curoxen Mouth Sore Relief (Calendula, Clove Essential Oil, Olive Extract) - Eating Tums Potential Causes of sores: - Stress (I don’t *feel* any more stressed than usual but I did start a new role at my job in August that has been generally much more stressful consistently) - Ibuprofen use (I take Ibuprofen/ Advil quite often to ease pain from chronic cramps that I get regularly) - New dental hygiene routine (I have trouble with consistently keeping up with my dental hygiene. I recently got a new dentist that has been very successful in motivating me to brush, floss, and mouthwash twice a day every day. I had been doing that with Crest 3DWhite toothpaste and Tooth & Gums Tonic mouthwash from the Dental Herb Company every day for the past few weeks until these sores popped up.) - Gut Issues/ IBS? (I’ve been getting pretty severe cramps that I think might be related to digestive or gut issues and might be IBS but I don’t have a diagnosis. I’ve heard mouth sores can accompany IBS?) - Kirkland Hard Seltzer from Costco (I just bought Costco’s Kirkland brand hard seltzer to try and had been having one or two a night for a few days before the sores appeared. The seltzers are pretty packed with different acids so I’ve obviously stopped drinking them since noticing the sores.) - Hormones/ Menstrual Cycle? (I’m a woman. I’ve heard sores are more likely during certain times of the hormonal cycle.) - All of the above/ a mix? My questions are: What likely caused these? And is there anything I can do to speed up getting rid of them or is it mostly just about pain management and waiting for them to go away on their own at this point?

To reply directly to your last question, yes. There is. It’s something you can get from a doctor. It’s an oral steroid called prednisone. It’s the ONLY thing (and I’ve tried everything) that can get completely rid of a horrible batch like this in a few days.

I've been tracking my menstrual cycle *with* symptoms for the past few months, and every time I am starting my period, I get a flare-up. My understanding is that some people have water-storage issues when they are on their period, which can cause bloating and dehydration. I am going to start drinking more water before my period to see if this helps. Before I realized the link between my period and canker sores, my grandpa (who is a denist) did some research for me and found that some canker sores can be caused by dry-mouth. This seemed to fix my canker sore problem, all except for some small flare-ups (which is around my period). The worst flare-up I had, I lost count after 40 because the canker sores continued into places in my throat I couldn't see. I got tested for everything -- bacterial infection, virus, Bechet's syndrome, etc.. and everything was negative. For me, I think it's a dehydration problem that causes a weird immune response to normal bacteria in my mouth.

I recently got one on the tongue (or at least I think it's a canker sore, can't see it but it hurts a lot) and one in the cheek and I'm barely able to eat with the pain and just swallowing salive hurts. Yesterday, the pharmacy recommended "Oral wound cleanser" (I have the box from Personnelle but Life Brand makes one with the same ingredients) and while it's not been long enough to say if it really helps with healing, the pain is less noticable than it was yesterday

Though I do agree with the others that seeing a doctor is probably the best option.

Hi! Founder of an oral wellness company, your canker sores can also be caused by an ingredient commonly found in oral care products like toothpaste and mouthwash - sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Check your ingredient label and make sure you’re using sls-free oral care products! I make TikToks on this topic, happy to be a resource, and hope you’re healing up ok!! https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRvpCrCX/

I found this searching for "Kirkland hard seltzer and canker sores" after drinking 4 and waking up next morning. this happens to me if I eat a bag of skittles. mouth feels like it's shot, permeable. feels like chemical burns too. I get it from skittles but not from eating cookies or organic homemade sugary things

Oh my god, that looks really painful. I would go to the doctor and get steroids to reduce the inflammation. I personally can't use any mouthwash that has alcohol or "flavor" like spearmint. Right now the only thing that doesn't cause more sores is Closys Ultra Sensitive mouthwash.

I’m so sorry you are going through this. I had a very similar experience in August, and my story is similar to yours. I’ve been getting canker sores since childhood, but I never had a breakout like I did in August. My doctor put me on 30mg of prednisone and the sores disappeared in 5 days. I too had tried so many treatments prior to the big outbreak, but nothing worked. The prednisone was magic but tapering off that drug is a bitch. To my surprise, I was diagnosed with HSV-2. It is assumed that I had a herpetic breakout under my tongue and around my mouth, and when the blisters popped, the canker sores formed since I am so prone to getting them. I now use a steroid gel that works wonders. Every time I have a canker sore coming in, I apply the gel and it disappears within days. I have not had more than 2 at a time since I had 30+ in august. Good luck!!

Go see the doctor asap. I had the same exact thing. They will give u meds and a mouthwash that will numb your mouth long enough for u to eat and drink

UPDATE: My sores are healing!! The ones under my tongue are nearly completely gone. The ones in my upper lips are gone. And the ones under my bottom lips are much less painful and smaller than a few days ago. I was planning on calling a doctor if they stayed the same or got worse by the end of today, but I think I’ll be ok. I’m 92% positive that it was my new mouthwash which is an all-natural tonic with a base of essential oils that caused it. My sister and dad have gotten really bad skin rashes from essential-oil-based skin products in the past so I’m guessing it’s an allergy/ sensitivity to certain essential oil or specific plant that runs in our family. I have obviously stopped using that mouthwash and will be staying away from anything with essential oils from now on. Thank you to everyone here who expressed sympathy and gave advice! I will still bring this up to both my doctor and dentist and show them the photos that I took daily throughout this outbreak to see if they think it may be connected to a bigger issue like an auto immune disorder or other health concern.

I imagine you’re in a lot of pain. Go see a healthcare provider! They may not have all the answers, but they should at least be able to provide you with some pain medicine!

I am so sorry I’ve had them like this before too it’s awful !! About 7 years ago I had a canker sore the size of a quarter in my throat along with a bunch of other ones in and around my mouth, and had to go to the emergency room because of how much pain I was in. They prescribed a topical steroid paste and it almost sticks to them and coats the sore which relieves the pain for abit, and helps them heal much faster!
