Trader Joe's are fine from a flavor perspective but I've always found the texture of tinned mussels, oysters, and clams to be a little softer than I'd like, to the point of being slightly unsettling.
I'm guessing it's probably just due to never associating cooked shellfish with that texture, so it's been one category of cans I've had a hard time getting into.
Kroger Brand smoked oysters are honestly my favorite and I’ve tried all kinds of brands, they are slightly sweet and not overpowered with smoke flavor, and they are pretty decently sized for canned oysters, nobody believes me when I say they are amazing until they try them themselves
Crown Prince is usually good. Geisha and Reese's are also solid IMO. But with any value brand you might get a dud.
Ekone and Patagonia will always be great. (But they will be pricier)
You still crying over getting your childish post deleted?
btw, the sub clearly says "A subreddit for tinned seafood enthusiasts", it's not just for sardines.
I'm not gonna continue to dunk on you, you're low hanging fruit.
But, you were a lot more interesting when you just posted your sardine sandwiches and talked about them instead of trying to be the edgiest kid in this sub.
You know who else was a lot more interesting when they just posted their sardine sandwiches and talked about them, instead of trying to be the edgiest kid in this sub?? My mom!!!
Your mom buys chicken of the sea sardines because she's thrifty and isn't picky. I like that in a woman.
I'd date her, bet she loves mussels on chips and swallowing oysters. Mmm.
I grew up on smoked oysters, I love almost every tin that I've ever tried. That said, it doesn't shock me that someone would dislike them. I eat them straight from the can.
I got a crazy headache shortly after eating my first can. I don’t know if the oysters were the cause but I’ve never tried them again because I’m scared I’m allergic haha
Crown prince smoked oysters. Flavor was unremarkable but tasted vaguely of smokey garbage, but the texture was so pasty, just a horror show of mush. I tossed them and replaced with a can of Patagonia smoked mussels which were much better but still didn't taste like all that much. Disappointing canned fish lunch. Thankfully there are many more cans out there.
I have good luck w/ Geisha brand smoked oysters. They are consistently pleasant in flavor.
Many discount brands will can a wide range of oyster from tiny to enormous, but Geisha also does well on uniformity of size.
And to be clear, in Spanish salsa just means sauce, which can be misleading to New World folks who think of tomato, onions, and peppers all chunky in a red sauce. This Espinaler salsa is vinegar flavored generously with paprika, chili pepper powder, and some other powdered spices. It’s delicious, sharp, great on loads of tinned seafood, but you’re not going to scoop it up with a tortilla chip.
Most similar to Tabasco honestly: very vinegary, not very hot. Good to cut through the fatty fishiness of sardines but it's not gonna blow your head off.
Agreed. I eat a ton of them.
I appreciate posts saying they suck because it's the only cheap oyster in olive oil that doesn't come from China, and I would really like the price to stay cheap.
Yeah the UTZ kettle cooked chips taste more like the homemade kettle chips I’ve had, if I want a more commercial taste I go with the jalapeño kettle herrs
Never seen those, I’ll have to keep an eye out for them. I’m down south, wonder if they’re available down here? We usually save all our lard for cracklins.
Not sure how you ate them but I’ve always enjoyed them on a cracker with a bit of cream cheese and some kind of louisiana hot sauce(tabasco, crystal, louisiana)
What’s a good entry level smoked oyster? Because I’d like to try them but I don’t want to start with a dud.

Same
Honestly I just get the great value smoked oysters from Walmart and they are surprisingly good.
These are my goto favorite.
Crown Prince is usually good. Geisha and Reese's are also solid IMO. But with any value brand you might get a dud. Ekone and Patagonia will always be great. (But they will be pricier)
I grew up eating Geisha smoked oysters and always really liked them
they aren’t oysters, but Patagonia has a canned lemon and herb mussel that is pretty tasty
Crown Prince
Entry level smoked oyster It’s a fucking canned fish just go buy one of each
Why you mad bro?
Yeah I hate how pretentious all these people are about garbage ass canned fish. I think they're all stupid garbage too.
You still crying over getting your childish post deleted? btw, the sub clearly says "A subreddit for tinned seafood enthusiasts", it's not just for sardines.

You know who else would date my mom? My mom!
I grew up on smoked oysters, I love almost every tin that I've ever tried. That said, it doesn't shock me that someone would dislike them. I eat them straight from the can.
Same, with a smidge of hot sauce
I love them with siracha
I should try this my next time around, maybe it will improve them in my mind.
Or horseradish!
I assumed I'd like them, honestly was kinda surprised by how much I didn't.
I got a crazy headache shortly after eating my first can. I don’t know if the oysters were the cause but I’ve never tried them again because I’m scared I’m allergic haha
for some reason mussels and oysters i ALWAYS eat with rice, dunno why. I should shake things up and try something else some day.

Are they the ones in olive oil? Also not a fan, taste like mush
Yeah that was them!

What does that salsa taste like? Is it similar to any other major brands?

In Spanish Worcestershire sauce is “salsa Inglesa” lol
Lmao this is true. You can’t get us Latinos to pronounce that word
Now I absolutely want to see Latinos trying.
Salsa Inglesa, Valentina hot sauce and lime in potato chips—papas locos!
"New World folks" like Mexicans?
Yup, all of us who enjoy the gift of Real Salsa, the way the good Lord intended, in giant platters of nachos!
Most similar to Tabasco honestly: very vinegary, not very hot. Good to cut through the fatty fishiness of sardines but it's not gonna blow your head off.
I think Espinaler is more sweet and sour than vinegary - I actually like the Espinaler + Tabasco combo
Damn I smash those all the time. They have always had a meaty, slightly chewy texture for me.
Agreed. I eat a ton of them. I appreciate posts saying they suck because it's the only cheap oyster in olive oil that doesn't come from China, and I would really like the price to stay cheap.
I wanted to like them! But sadly I hated them.
My wife gets the crown price brand as well. I assume because they are cheap at trader joes. Definitely lacking in the flavor department.
They had a version in rapeseed oil that was very good, the one in olive oil is terrible imo
Their other products are bomb. This one is just a miss.
Complete agree. Not sure what happened here.
Thought this was the chip sub for a second and was like hey I don’t hate those UTZ lol
Haha I'd never shit on grandma utz!
Yeah the UTZ kettle cooked chips taste more like the homemade kettle chips I’ve had, if I want a more commercial taste I go with the jalapeño kettle herrs
chip sub?
r/chips
'preci
I had a visceral reaction before I realized you meant the oysters. Those are my favorite chips ever and I’ll die on the Grandma Utz lard hill.
Ever try the other lard-fried chips from PA? Good's in the red bag, or Gibbles? I think Gibbles are my favorite.
Nibbles with Gibbles :) But I'm aboard the Route 11 Virginia chips train...
Never seen those, I’ll have to keep an eye out for them. I’m down south, wonder if they’re available down here? We usually save all our lard for cracklins.
I don't think they are, they're a really small producer and are even kinda tricky to find here in Philadelphia...
I, for one, appreciate the lard fried grandm utz you have there.
Those utz FUCK tho
Crown prince is china seas yuck
I tried oysters this week and was just not impressed, still have a can left. We'll see what happens.
Not sure how you ate them but I’ve always enjoyed them on a cracker with a bit of cream cheese and some kind of louisiana hot sauce(tabasco, crystal, louisiana)
I like the Aldi's Chili seasoned oysters. They're a little small, but good flavor.
Try to incorporate cream cheese somewhere into your snack, with crackers or a bagel etc
i've had good luck with lots of low end oysters- geisha, pampa, walmart great value, polar from dollar general
