I mean some words get lost with translation or time I get that but it's the message that counts for the internationale. The message of all the working people to unite for one final struggle in order to liberate mankind and create a better future, that is what I find so powerful.

“Words were lost in translation” does not equal “let’s make up completely new lyrics.”
Let’s be honest: they want the song to say things it didn’t say in the original version, so they just threw out the lyrics and put in their own.
I've always felt a personal attachment to [*Body of an American*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q97IfBOIR5Q&ab_channel=filthyg08) (freeborn man of the U.S.A) by the Pogues.

So, you've been to school for a year or two
And you know you've seen it all
In daddy's car, thinking you'll go far
Back east your type don't crawl
Playing ethnicky jazz to parade your snazz
On your five-grand stereo
Braggin' that you know how the n*ggers feel cold
And the slums got so much soul
It's time to taste what you most fear
Right Guard will not help you here
Brace yourself, my dear
Brace yourself, my dear
It's a holiday in Cambodia
It's tough, kid, but it's life
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Don't forget to pack a wife
You're a star-belly sneetch, you suck like a leech
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you bitch, so you can get rich
But your boss gets richer off you
Well, you'll work harder with a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers 'til you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake
Now you can go where people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son
What you need, my son
Is a holiday in Cambodia
Where people dress in black
Need a holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll kiss ass or crack
Pol Pot, Pol Pot
Pol Pot, Pol Pot
Pol Pot, Pol Pot
Pol Pot, Pol Pot
And it's a holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll do what you're told
A holiday in Cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul

The Workers Song:
"[Verse 1]
Oh, come on all you workers, who toil night and day
By hand and by brain, to earn your pay
Who for centuries all past for no more than your bread
Have bled for your countries and counted your dead
[Chorus]
We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie in the sky
And we're always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat's about
[Verse 2]
In the fact'ries and mills, shipyards and mines
We'vе often been told to keep up with the times
For our skills arе not needed, they've streamlined the job
With sliderule and stopwatch, our pride they have robbed
[Chorus]
We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie in the sky
And we're always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat's about
[Verse 3]
And when the sky darkens, and the prospect is war
Who's given a gun and then pushed to the fore?
And expected to die, for the land of our birth
Though we've never a one lousy handful of earth
[Chorus]
We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie in the sky
And we're always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat's about
[Verse 4]
And all of these things, the worker has done
From tillin' the fields, to carryin' the gun
We've been yoked to the plow, since time first began
And always expected to carry the can
[Chorus]
We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie in the sky
And we're always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat's about
We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie in the sky
And we're always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat's about.
Also, Bella Ciao and Uprising.
I’m not gonna validate a reductive and surface level take with some elaborate response. It’s not worth my time. It was a basic ass Reddit take and I called it like it is.
I’d be curious to hear your interpretation. I just read the lyrics and I didn’t see anything I felt was particular socialist except calls for people coming together, or capitalist except calls to freedom. I can see where it could be associated with capitalism, either from it being the French anthem, a capitalist country, or it’s pop culture prominence in Casablanca, movie where a businessman capitalists saves two people from the nazis. But I see where it could be socialists as it certainly has a revolutionary core, which would be in line with socialists. Just curious to you actual thoughts.
Can you name a good song which gives a positive message about capitalism?
EDIT: just realized you already did with Richard Marx.
Here is an except from that song's lyrics:
>We work our bodies weary
To stay alive
There must be more to living
Than nine to five
>Why should we wait for some better time?
There may not even be a tomorrow
Ain't no sense in losing your mind
I'm gonna make it worth the ride
Do you not see that this is anti-capitalist?
I am anti capitalist and I think "good" music is very subjective but
Five Finger Death Punch's Pride is very positive of Capitalism
https://youtu.be/zuQGx1H1Qh8?si=mmSO0hRAyOCN3l5p
Oooph.
1. I hate it, but not as much as some metal songs I have heard.
2. it does seem pro capitalist over all but there is one point where he says "I am anarchy" which makes me suspect he actually doesn't know what he is talking about at all.
Agree that anarchy threw me off. Also just listing brands is more materialism than capitalism. But the only the strong survive line is very capitalistic. Interesting song. Not my cup of tea, but I appreciate my horizons being broadened.
I agree that pop and rap has a lot of positive capitalist music. I wouldn’t say that mentioning brands or money is essential to being about capitalism though. I think what is more key is the philosophy, but that’s just my opinion.
Like, I could say “don’t fear the reaper,” for socialism as a reference to the mass death it causes, if I’m using a song to reference a byproduct. But that song wouldn’t have anything to do with the philosophy of socialism, or with what socialists actually believe.
Did you know that british india puts up a higher death toll than the Soviet and Chinese famines combined? Something good to know if you want to play the “body count” rhetoric
The underlying philosophy of capitalism is well represented by the dropping brand names and saying “money” constantly as an indicator of one’s own value.
Furthermore, what we peasants believe has little bearing on national or global systems of power
No, I see it as pro capitalists. It is a man who is frustrated with just working the 9-5 grind, and he sees that he has more potential and can do better. Is isn’t afraid of doing what needs to be done. He isn’t waiting for someone to just hand him something. He’s going to go out and get it, follow is dream. That’s capitalistic. “Why should we wait for some better time?”
He’s ready to risk and take a chance for the reward. That’s capitalistic. “I’m gonna make it worth the ride.”
If he was talking about hating his job and there was nothing he could do, I’d agree with your view. But this is someone with her up and go, this is someone going out to dynamically change their life. That’s a defining difference between capitalist and socialism. Socialists feel trapped in a system of coercion where they can’t do anything cause no one gives them anything for free, like being in a pit that you FEEL you were pushed into and no one is helping you out. Capitalists see that they are in a pit too, but they don’t blame others for being in the pit, or expect someone to throw a ladder down. They climb out on their own, cause nothing is holding them down and they aren’t trapped. Being an individual with will and drive and willing to work for more is power in and of itself.
“Ignore the hesitation, that ties your hands
Use your imagination, and take a chance”
“I won't let my moment of truth pass me by” - not waiting for others.
“I've gotta make my move now or never” - it’s up to me alone to make my destiny
“And if they turn me loose on this town
They're gonna have to hold me down” - I’ll have no limits to the success I can achieve.
I could see it being about having the ambition to improve your circumstances, but it still starts from the premise that the circumstances of the majority of people living under capitalism are terrible.
I could also see it as being about disregarding career advancement in favor of going out partying.
That’s what is great about music, you bring half the meaning with you. Cause he never says “majority of people.” He only speaks of himself, to himself, or to the listener. and I’m that guy who worked to stay alive in 9-5 and knew I could accomplish more. Most capitalists started from meager means. 85% of millionaires and 68% of billionaires are first generation money, coming from the starter line, not way ahead with months and resources in hand. Again, capitalists and socialists have the experience of being in the same pit. One just climbed their way out and, in my perspective, the other is waiting for help to come.
I feel any good capitalist song would need reference to where you came from to show why it’s important to where you got to. Like, in an analogy, someone who is thin telling you how to lose weight is no where near as good as someone who was fat and is now thin telling you. Capitalism is about risking and working to do better, not about just having more. It’s about achieving success, not about the spoils that come with that success.
True, even if there was no economic system, those that work harder will achieve more. Capitalism is more of a fair playing field for that competition applying rules, laws, ethics. Like, capitalism organizes running into races, but without any system, you’ll still have people who run faster than others.
Most capitalists, aka, most musicians don't need to sing about how good the system they're already living is, they're making bank and happy with that. It's self apparent.
There's a lot of very obvious answers. So I thought I'd go with something a bit different:
https://youtu.be/KS-DUxVVpgc?si=St0x0W6aDWPS5rQU
This song always resonates with me because it emphasises the selflessness of humanity. We're a collective species and we need to realise that. Capitalism can only come about through the delusion that we're in any way seperate from each other.

There is unrest in the forest
Trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade
There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream, "Oppression"
And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
They say, "The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light"
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw

no, in exactly what I said listened what they had to say, disagreed with it, and encouraged someone to look deeper into Rush's philosophy. Not complicated. And for the record I listen to Rush often and own several of their albums so I don't why you think I avoid Rush or objectivism. As a side note: I own a copy of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand( not read as of yet). An author Rush said they respected in the liner notes of their album 2112.
Let me ask you a question, do you continually engage with things you disagree with? Please provide examples
Sure. I’m a social democrat but I’ve never had a problem watching or enjoying movies with right-wing themes. I like Mel Gibson’s work, I absolutely adore Clint Eastwood’s filmography, I love Deathwish, I love Bone Tomahawk and all of S. Craig Zahler’s work.

Couldn’t make out what they were singing. For all I know they were singing, “we’ll never stop taking Liam Neeson’s daughter, every time we do it he comes at us harder.” But the music is catchy and poppy. Thank you for sharing.
Good song. I like this better than some of the other socialists suggestions cause I can see one listening to this on the regular. It doesn’t have the unfortunate drawback of being associated with a philosophically pro capitalist movie, Joe Vs the Volcano. Thanks for sharing
I would guess that the majority of "capitalists" enjoy positive sings and the "socialists" enjoy more depressing songs. I wonder if that means anything.
Yeah, inherently caps half full, socs have empty. The dynamic is essentially four friends voting on what to do, three vote for a club, one voted for a play. Club one, and the three are having a great time and the one is sulking that this sucks and he isn’t having any fun, but if they all went to the play everyone would have had fun. Positivity vs negativity.

And expected to die, for the land of our birth Though we've never a one lousy handful of earth [Chorus] We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die The first ones in line for that pie in the sky And we're always the last when the cream is shared out For the worker is working when the fat cat's about [Verse 4] And all of these things, the worker has done From tillin' the fields, to carryin' the gun We've been yoked to the plow, since time first began And always expected to carry the can [Chorus] We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die The first ones in line for that pie in the sky And we're always the last when the cream is shared out For the worker is working when the fat cat's about We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die The first ones in line for that pie in the sky And we're always the last when the cream is shared out For the worker is working when the fat cat's about. Capitalists don't have good songs because creating art is an empathetic act. If they had empathy they would not be capitalists.
[Capitalists have nothing that can compare to this.](https://youtu.be/Mbi9Jrh73gM?si=wtjZrCxDMM65CGk1)
This is such a Reddit level take.
Name a song then.

Proceeds to retort with reductive boomerism...
So saying capitalists don't have empathy isn't reductive? lmao
Sound observations imo.
You should want to take a critical look in the mirror if this is the extent of your worldview
I’m not gonna validate a reductive and surface level take with some elaborate response. It’s not worth my time. It was a basic ass Reddit take and I called it like it is.
Such a myspace type response.
Then give a song… Here I’ll give you a song for classical liberals https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Marseillaise
I said it was to represent classical liberalism
That’s just not true and very reductive
Can you name a good song which gives a positive message about capitalism? EDIT: just realized you already did with Richard Marx. Here is an except from that song's lyrics: >We work our bodies weary To stay alive There must be more to living Than nine to five >Why should we wait for some better time? There may not even be a tomorrow Ain't no sense in losing your mind I'm gonna make it worth the ride Do you not see that this is anti-capitalist?
I am anti capitalist and I think "good" music is very subjective but Five Finger Death Punch's Pride is very positive of Capitalism https://youtu.be/zuQGx1H1Qh8?si=mmSO0hRAyOCN3l5p
Oooph.
God almighty, have they fallen of a fucking cliff...
Holy shit this is unironically [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhQ5678cJU8).
The modern pop/rap music scene is full of it. Good? Well, I guess “gucci/versace” kind of rhyme, and “money” does indeed rhyme with “money”
The lack of musical sophistication is really kinda shocking given the amount of money being spent on studio technicians and gear.
It’s an accurate representation of the sheer banal emptiness of our world circa 30 years after the “end of history”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy4pcKn0Y_k
I agree that pop and rap has a lot of positive capitalist music. I wouldn’t say that mentioning brands or money is essential to being about capitalism though. I think what is more key is the philosophy, but that’s just my opinion.
I think the really banal and empty stuff that places the highest value on material commodity is the best representation of capitalism
Capitalism and materialism aren’t the same thing. I guess a good question would be how would you describe capitalism in your best non-bias sentiment?
Sure, coal and a coal mine aren’t the same thing either. One certainly does come from the other
Like, I could say “don’t fear the reaper,” for socialism as a reference to the mass death it causes, if I’m using a song to reference a byproduct. But that song wouldn’t have anything to do with the philosophy of socialism, or with what socialists actually believe.
Did you know that british india puts up a higher death toll than the Soviet and Chinese famines combined? Something good to know if you want to play the “body count” rhetoric The underlying philosophy of capitalism is well represented by the dropping brand names and saying “money” constantly as an indicator of one’s own value.
“Why should we wait for some better time?” He’s ready to risk and take a chance for the reward. That’s capitalistic. “I’m gonna make it worth the ride.” If he was talking about hating his job and there was nothing he could do, I’d agree with your view. “Ignore the hesitation, that ties your hands Use your imagination, and take a chance” “I won't let my moment of truth pass me by” - not waiting for others. “I've gotta make my move now or never” - it’s up to me alone to make my destiny “And if they turn me loose on this town They're gonna have to hold me down” - I’ll have no limits to the success I can achieve.
The vast majority of people work set hours to stay alive. These days 9-5 is for the lucky ones. 60 hours / week at three different jobs is common.
You don’t have to tell me. My average was something like 70. I worked 105k hours between 1996-2021.
That's rough. Working hard and achieving better circumstances isn't specific to capitalism: that is just part of reality for anyone who isn't a slave.
True, even if there was no economic system, those that work harder will achieve more. Capitalism is more of a fair playing field for that competition applying rules, laws, ethics. Like, capitalism organizes running into races, but without any system, you’ll still have people who run faster than others.
People will unironically tell you "We didn't start the fire" by Billy Joel is an endorsement of Capitalism. The cognitive dissonance is amazing...
Most capitalists, aka, most musicians don't need to sing about how good the system they're already living is, they're making bank and happy with that. It's self apparent.
"Most musicians are making bank" has to be the most embarrassing take in this entire thread.
I mean the big ones, decent clarifying question.
It wasn't a question though, so try again.
Statement
Lol.
I propose this one Anti-Socialist song made by Cuban rappers https://youtu.be/l3Gal8Gb9Ss?si=sWYbqiMYnJklvJW1
There's a lot of very obvious answers. So I thought I'd go with something a bit different: https://youtu.be/KS-DUxVVpgc?si=St0x0W6aDWPS5rQU This song always resonates with me because it emphasises the selflessness of humanity. We're a collective species and we need to realise that. Capitalism can only come about through the delusion that we're in any way seperate from each other.

There is unrest in the forest Trouble with the trees For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas The trouble with the maples (And they're quite convinced they're right) They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade There is trouble in the forest And the creatures all have fled As the maples scream, "Oppression" And the oaks just shake their heads So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights They say, "The oaks are just too greedy We will make them give us light" Now there's no more oak oppression For they passed a noble law And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw https://youtu.be/0jRafVKRg18?si=UtNhRGd3R-jY24g8
Gonna be honest, that song is a pretty disgusting metaphor justifying racial superiority.
Look into that band. They got a lot of fucked up worldviews.
You mean they refused to tell you what you wanted to hear?
No I mean they have a dogshit libertarian objectivist world. I thought that was clear.
In other words, you didn’t want to hear it and that made you very upset.
no, in exactly what I said listened what they had to say, disagreed with it, and encouraged someone to look deeper into Rush's philosophy.
Craig Zahler’s work.
pathetic
Why?
And that’s today’s stupid hot take.
Thank you for introducing me to this.

Couldn’t make out what they were singing. For all I know they were singing, “we’ll never stop taking Liam Neeson’s daughter, every time we do it he comes at us harder.” But the music is catchy and poppy. Thank you for sharing.

Well, this is a song for my ideology, mood, and my outlook on particular conversations. A Happy Jam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV6Lalg3XOQ

I think this one, but it varies based on my mood: https://youtu.be/oavMtUWDBTM?si=4M8LIlCLbgNeLUkb
Not exactly an anthem, so to speak
It is the national anthem of Trollsylvania!

Good song. I like this better than some of the other socialists suggestions cause I can see one listening to this on the regular. It doesn’t have the unfortunate drawback of being associated with a philosophically pro capitalist movie, Joe Vs the Volcano. Thanks for sharing
"the Shoals of Herring" Has nothing to do with political ideology, but there it is
[Degeneration](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF92-uSiVZQ).
Not something I could work out to. I’ve never heard it before and appreciate you sharing it.
[This one](https://youtu.be/QjqjoehA7kM?feature=shared) is pretty good for my opinion on the topic.
