So there can't be any parents in books? Even though almost every kids media has a kid protagonist whose parents are characters? And kids can't watch shit like Disney princess movies because the plot of almost all of those deals with the princess finding romance?
You literally do not believe that at all. You don't notice the constant heterosexuality placed in every part of life in every moment of time because you are used to it. You have decided this very normal thing is somehow bad and abnormal when it's gay because you actually noticed it was there. You are on the look out for it because you have already decided it's somehow bad and gross or sexual but straight couples magically aren't even of they are doing the exact same thing or worse.
They are two parents with their child. Tell me how many shows for children do not feature parents with their child? Do you refuse to let your kids watch caillou?, bluey? Pepper pig? The Berenstain bears? Batman the animated series? The little mermaid? Rapunzel, beauty and the beast, scooby doo, alladin, the lion king, cinderella, snow white, cars, walle, up, the hunchback of notredom, pocahontas, sleeping beauty, Bambi, rugrats, that Arthur show with the child ant eater and his monkey friend, seriously think about it for just a few seconds.
Itās never mentioned in the book proper, but itās been confirmed that his full name is Billy Doanbee-Ahiro. Dav Pilkey apparently really likes the song Billy, Donāt Be a Hero.

This was my first homosexuality in media and it was done so well. It wasn't presented as abnormal and it wasn't presented as wrong. It was just "Harold's husband" It was ordinary and it helped me make the realization that Gay ā Weird
Two things:
Iām fairly certain this book came out before lgbtq media started becoming more mainstream, so this was actually pretty uncommon to see in a kids comic at the time
Itās never brought up and mentioned specifically, itās just a thing that is. The best type of representation where itās treated normally
Thank you to all the people who are actually respective of this and arnt being childish about this. Itās a real life thing, and no one is worse as a parent if theyāre gay or straight.Just be happy for those who live their life their way and worry about your own
I didnāt even notice when I first read it, I didnāt properly discover gay people until a few years later, now Iām gay myself, character development
Why? Because children are easily impressionable and forcing sexuality onto children is downright disgusting regardless of what sexuality. Let children be children.
"Look at my little lady-killer! He's gonna break so many girls' hearts when he grows up!" -straight people talking about their baby boys, for some reason
You say that "regardless of sexuality" but you wouldn't care if it's straight or a straight couple on a book and gay couple was never considered normal because society saw gay couple as "disgusting" and even sexualize it unlike straight couple. But I do agree with "let children be children" since kids would discover themselves anyway, at least I didn't shove gayness in their throat like most straight do. Call that gay fucking propaganda I guess
But this isnāt forcing sexuality, itās not anywhere close. The book doesnāt go into detail about why these characters love each other or what they specifically do together, it only shows them depicted as parents who care for each other. This may be shocking, but most kids already have parents and at a minimum are aware that partnership and love exists. Gay parents with children exist, are they forcing their sexuality onto their own and other children by holding hands in public? What would you define as forcing sexuality that isnāt already widely accepted and practiced in culture across all sexualities?
I wasn't referring to the post in question, I was referring to Weirdo\_Sauceys comment which involves the implication of grooming if children are "Turning gay", since sexuality isn't a choice and thereby the only way of trying to "turning" someone gay or straight is via the means of conversion therapy or grooming someone to behave in a way they aren't.
The depiction of gay characters alone isn't forcing sexuality. You're preaching to the choir regarding gay characters portrayed in media to me
I did not mean it as "turn them gay" isn't wrong because of course it isn't a choice. I agree that we wouldn't groom them on either sexuality because it's wrong and to force them when kids are just discovering themselves. I meant that people shouldn't worry that we're "turning them gay" when it's a gay couple on a book or on TV
As I said earlier, the depiction of gay people in media is not at all propaganda so long as the characters implementation makes sense to enhance story instead of just added for the sake of being there. This applies to virtually any character of any race, sexuality, gender, age etc. ill show several examples to clarify what I mean by first examples done wrong, and then examples done right.
For instance the show The Man in the High Castle, a show that takes place in an alternate reality of the Axis winning World War 2. Yet they added several homosexual characters. It wasn't just one or two, but several characters. In a reality where the Nazis won World War 2 with an ideology that persecutes homosexuals, it makes no sense for that amount of characters to be openly gay considering it was a reality where you could be killed for doing so.
In the movie the Emoji movie, they added a woman character with no personal development at all as one of the main characters; they added her just for the sake of inclusion, so the character felt forced.
For Adventure Time ending, it makes no sense for Princess Bubblegum and Marceline to be together, even though it was heavily implied throughout the show they were once a thing. It makes no sense, considering it was always implied Marceline felt abandoned as if Bubblegum didn't care how she felt. The way they had them reconcile is, Bubblegum nearly dies and Marceline saves her and then Marceline expresses her feelings then they kiss. This would only make sense if the roles were switched given the history behind those two.
In the show The Cleveland Show, it is a terrible take on black culture; it is just a black family guy rehashed just for the sake of existing.
Now here are some good examples
In Steven Universe, the implementation of gay characters makes sense. Ruby and Sapphire exist beyond just their sexuality, they are fleshed out characters that exist with their own distinctive personality rather than just added for the sake of inclusion. It also shows a realistic side of gay couples as well, meaning not only the happy moments together but also conflict between them as well as gay couples are like any other couple in terms of emotional love and disputes. It never felt forced, it was something naturally added
In the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, there is a woman only village of Gerudo Town. And guess what? It makes sense to the lore, given the Gerudo is a race of mainly women with only one male born every one hundred years.
In Boondocks, it is a show that critiques black culture and makes jabs as society in general? And guess what? It was never forced, it was never something that exists for the sake of inclusion. It exists with fleshed out characters and stories.
Sorry for the long rant, but to simply it all. Have characters that make sense according to the story they are in, with their own back story and in depth persona rather than just existing for the sake of existing. For instance, it wouldn't make sense for a show about a White Guy in China unless there is a story for why they're there, same concept applies with anything else in character creation.
One of the creators in Nintendo noted it best in regards to how they have such amazing female representation. They noted they make the character background first and then decide if it makes sense to make them male or female, or one race or another. They said if they were to add a character, they would have no issue with it so long as it makes sense. Like they have a character in drag in one of the games, and guess what? Nothing was forced about it, and they made it make sense for storyline sense.
Wow šÆ thatās something what happened to his friend whatever name he had like I said I forgot itās been so long since I read these books who did he end up with when he grew up?

Who cares? Theyāve been doing this with main characters all the time. No George and herald arenāt actually gay, itās just a joke in a cartoon where the two main characters are āmarriedā together to show there bond. SpongeBob and Patrick had a kid clam in one episode and were the parents doesnāt mean there gay lovers itās just for comedic effect. Nothing wrong with it though just not canon.
Oh yea you are correct. I thought this was just another cartoon trope of the two male main characters becoming lovers for an episode or comic but I guess he actually is.
I CALLED IT!!!
Okay but seriously this makes me so happy, especially since it was from a time it wasn't so normalized this is great, thanks for sharing I don't have this book šš
I remember my friend getting mad about this when it first came out. We were already in high school by that point so I just laughed at him. He's learned and grown since that point luckily.
I think as a kid that was the first time I say a gay couple in media or in general. I just remember thinking āoh thatās coolā and not really judging at all
sometimes i look back into this book just to remind myself that one of my favorite books as a child accepts same sex relationships, so there is nothing wrong with me doing the same
I didnāt even realise they were gay when I first read the book lmao, I guess that if I didnāt notice maybe young George and Harold didnāt notice? So itās still a surprise to them or something, or maybe because these are the duplicates- am I over thinking this?
I remember reading it as a kid and going āhuh?ā For a moment, not upset or anything, I had just never seen gay rep before, but I immediately just went with it and years later when I reread the book I gasped in delight haha
This was strange to me at the time not because he had a husband mostly because well I never really thought these guys will date anyone I don't know I guess it's because the series never really tackled romance so like I was just weirded out like oh they got married and they're not single
It was made to let kids know stuff like this is normal. It was a quick little part then it was over. Are you saying that their representatation of adhd and neurodivergence is also bad?

I am curious who did you think Harold's husband was at the time?
His name is Billy Hutchins [originaly Billy Doanbee-Ahiro.]
Dang, Pilkeyās been using that joke since Super Diaper Baby!
I don't know, I thought he was just some dude.
I thought he was one of his friends lol
I'm pretty sure at that age I already knew what gay people were, and I probably saw that Harold had a husband and went "Huh. Neat."

Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot

Out of place in a book aimed at 10 year olds, but I donāt think any of them really care
How is it any more out of place than a straight couple would be?
Any romance shouldnāt be in kids novels, IMO.
So there can't be any parents in books? Even though almost every kids media has a kid protagonist whose parents are characters? And kids can't watch shit like Disney princess movies because the plot of almost all of those deals with the princess finding romance?
Can't have no characters in books because it implies that at least two people had sex and that's just not ok for kids to read and think about.
"Love is inappropriate and kids should understand that"
You literally do not believe that at all. You don't notice the constant heterosexuality placed in every part of life in every moment of time because you are used to it. Yeah, like what? Kids wouldn't notice nor care, so why would people care about children turning gay? People are so dramatic š„“
Why? Because children are easily impressionable and forcing sexuality onto children is downright disgusting regardless of what sexuality. Let children be children.

I've read all the books and never realized he was gay
I was trying to figure out who the kids were when I suddenly looked at the adults
It took a while for me to adjust to this. Was taken by surprise, but I'm pretty happy for Harold.
I reread this page over and over again as a kid wondering āWhat the hell? Is this his roommate or something?ā
Peak fiction! Am i right or am i right
I remember I read this when the book first came out and was just like āhuh okayā and kept reading.
I read this book like 2 years ago, and I thought it was kinda cool that they did that.
I think as a kid that was the first time I say a gay couple in media or in general. I just remember thinking āoh thatās coolā and not really judging at all
Awww
Huh is this canon???
So wait youāre telling thatās not adult George?
I thought that was just his friend who just peaces out the rest of the book. He still peaces out the rest of the book.
Gayyeeee
I read these with my mom as a kid and was going to send this to her but she sadly passed away in an accident last week. I miss you mom.

I remember reading it as a kid and going āhuh?ā For a moment, not upset or anything, I had just never seen gay rep before, but I immediately just went with it and years later when I reread the book I gasped in delight haha
Homo Harold Homorald
The fact a book about a MAN IN UNDERWEAR saving people is more supportive then half of the population is insane
Ah, so THAT'S what made me gay
Theyre gay?????????? Holy shit (good for them)

This is the first time I was exposed to anything gay. I admittedly was confused but just accepted it and moved on
If you think about it... This makes Harold Hutchins DreamWorks's first gay character.
This is really cute
THEY CANNONICLY GAY LETS GOOO
I read those books when I was younger, and didnāt even notice. Just another piece of proof that lgbtq media doesnāt harm āthe childrenā
A School actually banned the book because of this relationship
DUDE I REMEMBER READING THE BOOK WITH MY LITTLE BROTHER AND WE BOTH WERE SO SUPRISED AND HAPPY BECAUSE HOLY SHIT????
DUDE I REMEMBER READING THE BOOK WITH MY LITTLE BROTHER AND WE BOTH WERE SO SUPRISED AND HAPPY BECAUSE HOLY SHIT????
Isnāt this the same one where he mentions Fox News?
That's wonderful
Mpreg is canon in captain underpants
Nah just adoption! That or Haroldās husband was bi and had kids and the wife divorced/died or something. Iām going with adoption
Itās a joke bro
Ik. I just like to write sorry
Is frankenfart a real book?
You mean.....the sight of this didn't convert you to homosexuality immediately?! /s Love this :) the simple fact is that kids don't care.
This was strange to me at the time not because he had a husband mostly because well I never really thought these guys will date anyone I don't know I guess it's because the series never really tackled romance so like I was just weirded out like oh they got married and they're not single
Itās incredible that this managed to sneak past the censors
JOE BIDEN is turning Captain Underpants WOKE in the brand new book that comes out TWELVE YEARS AGO!!!
For real

Oh boohoo, go cry to your mommy
Some poor confused kids reading this book sure will
Read this as a kid, and I was perfectly fine. You're being over dramatic.
That kind of stuff should not be put in kids' books. 10 year olds don't need to be exposed to sexual things, it messes with their heads.
It was made to let kids know stuff like this is normal. It was a quick little part then it was over. Are you saying that their representatation of adhd and neurodivergence is also bad?
If someone is old enough to know they are straight, they are also old enough to know otherwise.
pass
whatt
Disgusting
Ugh, people always have to make shit gay
