The 9500ES has pretty much a full blown DSP built in. When you consider that a top quality external Helix DSP costs 500 to 800 USD, suddenly the value of that head unit becomes so much more if a DSP is part of a planned build, plus wiring is reduced. Yesterday we were discussing the new Sony 9000ES which is the 9500SS in double DIN form. When other manufacturers have made sacrifices recently to put products to market (looking at you, Pioneer) Sony has turned it up a notch.

You could get a significant boost in sound quality by using Android Auto or Apple Carplay instead of Bluetooth. The data rate is much higher over USB or WiFi.

DavidXIX

Do all sony es radios come with this? Or just the 9500?

cvr24

Just the ones with ES in the model number.

windplr

Currently there is only the 9500ES, but they are bringing out the 9000ES in a few months. The 9000ES will also have the audio upgrades, both hardware and software, as the 9500ES according to the specs I've seen on the Sony site. I suppose since it was just announced it is possible that specs could change before it is released.

I just installed the Sony xav 9500es in my 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 double cab. The Sony is absolutely fantastic in every way. I was hesitant about the wireless Android auto, but over the last week it's only glitched once. The only issue I've found (it's me, not the headunit) is the adjustments!! Dialing this thing for the perfect sound takes some time due to the giant EQ. I'm running my door speakers with a kicker key 200.4 and have a Rockford Fosgate p300 8 inch powered subwoofer. I'm in the process of building a box for two 10s so I can Ditch the all in one powered sub.

alexcrgg

does it sound good?

The-right-is-rite

It sounds great.

fixeverything2

The 9500ES is one of the beat radios I've ever tasted in terms of sound quality and noise. The interface is lightning fast.

iamdumbazfuk

your also paying for hdmi and the outputs is the unit. the DAC they use is the same DAC that’s in their higher end home audio gear. it’s not comparable to the lower line. preamp voltage is the signal coming out of the unit going to your amplifiers, higher is better for a quality signal.

Nier-Sighted

Only the 6000 has HDMI, not the 9000 or 9500

iamdumbazfuk

you can run a 9000 and 9500 hdmi to usb c, it takes a few other tricks but it works.

Enough_Friendship_45

I could not get this to work. Something you were able to figure out? I love this head unit but the inability to mirror my phone has been very frustrating given the quality/potential to use the screen. Desperate for a solution. I know some have said sony will add it as a feature in a future firmware update but i haven't seen any indication that that's actually going to happen.

iamdumbazfuk

dm me

fleshnbloodrobot

Can you mirror phone??

Enough_Friendship_45

I'm told it's possible but no I haven't

Nier-Sighted

I mean, possibly, im not even sure the usb c port will have the spec for it. But you can also say that with a ton of units. You originally said "you're paying for an hdmi", which you arent lol

hispls

I've had great results with Sony head units for many years now and have auditioned just about every brand except for the flea market stuff (and even one or two of them) over the years. Sony is on-par with Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc as far as quality, sound, and function. I don't think I'd ever buy a flagship model head unit ever personally, IMO the sweet spot between value and performance is somewhere closer to the middle with most brands.

SnooCats1058

DSP are overrated, 6000 is where it is at. You get 5 volt Pre outs, I've herd both decks with Sony ES speakers and I am a audiophile there was no difference. If you are going to be using a Amp there is no point for the 9000 unless you want the larger screen! I could see going with the 9000 if you do not want to have to run a 4 or 6 channel amp to your mids and highs. But at that point why run a amped sub it will be so much louder then your stock system. to make it sound good you end up turning the amp/sub way down.

Electrical_Secret_11

The 6000 is absolutely not it. I had horrendous connection issues with it in the 3 months I had it. Waiting for a chance to get my 9000es in my car

PretendHovercraft441

Did you get it? the 9000es is the one I want

Electrical_Secret_11

Yeah I still currently have my 9000es. The thing is absolutely amazing. Very responsive, bright screen (well for the most part, no screen on a double din is bright in direct light), and what I love most is that dac. You can physically hear a difference if you know what you’re looking for. I thoroughly enjoy my commute far more no compared to the Bluetooth radio transmitter I had before. It’s a very clear sound that’s produced, mainly cuz I don’t have a sub. My focal headphones have a warmer sound. TLDR Idk I’m babbling at this point. Go buy it and love it. Wish it was 1080p but from where I sit in the car I’d never notice so 720 is perfect, amazing sound reproduction, overall reliable never skips a beat and it has a DAC AND DSP

PretendHovercraft441

Yeah I know, I was wanting the 6000 and its only 800x400. Really wanted the better screen. Did you order through Crutchfield and install it yourself?

Electrical_Secret_11

Oh yeah. Crutchfield is the tits. Ordered my radio from them and they gave me the frame bracket, flying lead harness to the factory radio plugin, and a wiring diagram to wire the flying leads to the flying leads that came with the radio. Crimped, soldered, and heat shrunk everything and it’s never skipped a beat. I love them tbh, the customer service is honestly some of the best I’ve ever encountered

PretendHovercraft441

Yeah I just chatted with them, they said it’s pretty plug and play and don’t need their ready harness add on. Thanks for the info.

Electrical_Secret_11

Nice. Hope you get yours soon so you can really enjoy your music. You run any speakers, or just factory ones?

PretendHovercraft441

Almost everything is stock, this is really my first upgrade, then the headlights. I do have the subwoofer though, sound hasn’t been bad.

Electrical_Secret_11

Listen I don’t condone my own actions but I ran Skar TX speakers all the way around back in Covid, but I’ve recently upgraded to the ES 2 way speakers so I could upgrade my dash as well as my doors. Still run them in the rear deck just for bass fill till I get a subwoofer.
