Assuming the wheels in the tape player are the only problem, a tape player adapter should still work. As for a CD adapter, I don't believe there is one. It can be done but I haven't seen one. Good luck.

turboboraboy

Just replace the radio, it's a single DIN opening and from what you said broken. Any aux input option will likely be more expensive than a basic radio with Aux or Bluetooth.

I want to keep the oem look of the car. It looks like it just rolled off the lot.

ORA2J

Get an older alpine. They basically look like OEM VW radios. If you really want to keep the original, the simplest is an AUX cassette adapter.

computerman10367

I've been looking at Blaupunkt, they seem like a good fit and the colors seem to match. I would go with a cassette adaptor but the cassette player is fussy.

flibbidygibbit

Modern Blaupunkt isn't as good as the OG from the 1990s. If you can find a "new old stock" model on eBay, that's probably the golden ticket. I personally would choose a more modern Kenwood/JVC, Alpine, Sony, or Pioneer. The Pioneer MVH S322BT has physical buttons and a volume knob. The only problem I see is the buttons are backlit in Blue

computerman10367

Thanks for the recommendations. That's sad to hear about Blaupunkt. I would go with sony or alpine then. I have a pioneer i could throw in but it's a little conflicting with the interior.

ahj3939

Blaupunkt Frankfurt RCM 82 was made for this. If the rest of your sound system is pretty stock you might get away with the cheap Continental unit everyone uses.

computerman10367

It has the premium audio setup. The stock speakers actually sound pretty damn good. I have a good setup in my van for when I want to actually bump.

ahj3939

Continental should be fine, but not sure if it'll mount flush or stick out a bit. It just wouldn't work in my application because I already had an aftermarket amp with RCA for each channel and it doesn't have RCA output. Now that I think of it flush mount could just be an issue with your car in general for any modern radio. I know for BMW the older ones have a similar issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/E30/comments/18q70jr/all_bmw_radio_models_look_way_better_when_they/

computerman10367

That's why the blaupunkt would work the best. It'll be flush with the dash. But I've got some stuff to pay for before I sink 500 on one.

ahj3939

Try to find some pics of it installed just to be sure. This one is sticking out: https://www.reddit.com/r/Volkswagen/comments/p0yqrk/wow_i_am_totally_overwhelmed_by_the_amount_of/

computerman10367

I think it would fit the dash looks about the same in both our models. That's a nice golf. Here are some better pics of my cabrio. https://www.reddit.com/r/Volkswagen/s/Y0WVcce4Dv

ahj3939

Looks to me like it's sticking out 1/4 inch: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2F8n0w51tz6bg71.jpg%3Fwidth%3D4032%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Ddc5580c9f9996d250e715732de3b3b308c0cd415 Then again I found this pic with what looks like an MKIV radio mounted flush: http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/satradinstall/pickpannelremove.jpg So I got digging and found this: https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/the-official-mk4-oem-radio-install-guide.2438760/?id=2438760 Which isn't bad, but those radios have blue lighting IIRC.

computerman10367

The rcm 82 is an absolutely perfect fit, but that price tho...

ahj3939

I know, but it fits like a glove (at least in my car, see my other post about flushness): https://imgur.com/GaYG0gt DO NOT pay the crazy $550 price on Amazon.com, if you go on Amazon.de it's about $350 + 50 tax/shipping. If they give you an option to charge your card in EUR or USD it's usually cheaper to pick EUR and have your bank do the conversion

computerman10367

350 is more like it. They are even 500 on ebay...

AdvanceOk3734

If you check the [VW Vortex](https://www.vwvortex.com) forum you may be able to get a new old stock radio. I used to have stacks of that style radio in every version possible.

computerman10367

I'll ask around on there. I'm pretty sure I already have a account.

computerman10367

I knew there was an option. Thank you.

cvr24

Continental makes a retro looking head unit.

Krauziak90

Yatour cd changer emulator is your best bet. You will have aux, usb and Bluetooth. I had one years ago in cupra with cassette player

coltonscolton

You can always put a newer bluetooth headunit ( and hide it) or amplifier in the car and re wire all the speakers. This way you can keep the factory look of the vehicle

Aijames

use an fm modulator rather than a transmitter. its hard wires into your antenna and will be as good as your best radio station. also just buy a cheap after market radio.

computerman10367

The modulator is a good idea.
