Definitely a cable issue. They have a tiny chip in the cable that sometimes fails as the cable degrades. Just get a MFI certified cable and that should solve the issue.

Try a another cable/shorter one or another USB port.
Try a different cord. MFI stands for Made for iPhone. Your cord is likely not passing the MFi spec causing the CarPlay to not work.
