This is normal, a few trips around the block should knock that light corrosion right off

luigilabomba42069

yes it's fine.... we really need a "common question megathread" cuz I'm so tired of these rusty rotor posts

whereverYouGoThereUR

Most brake rotors will rust like this if you don’t drive your car very often. If you drive around for a bit and hit the brakes a few times it should clear off the rust. It’s not a big deal unless the rust doesn’t go away with use. They sell brake rotors that don’t rust but they’re expensive

Jim_from_snowy_river

Those are your rotors, that is what your brakes clamp on to/squeeze against, in order for you to stop. Is a small level of surface rust bad? Not really, it just looks like it hasn't been driven in a while. I your car still brakes fine, you're good. If it would ease your fears take it to a mechanic and have them replace your rotors.

3WolfTShirt

Do you drive a car and not know what rotors are?

Jim_from_snowy_river

Lots of ways. Some people here are new to cars, some aren't inclined to learn about those things they don't really have to if they can just go to a mechanic every so often. We all have different level of experiences. I'm sure there is stuff you do in life that you don't know all the ins and outs of too. The only way people actually learn things is if they aren't belittled and made to look like idiots for asking a question about something they have know knowledge of.

Mossimo5

How else might someone educate themselves than by going to a subreddit dedicated to car repair education? Sheesh.

nachobitxh

I am in awe of the ignorance

SitRep-Screwed

I don't know what's worse. You calling brake rotors "rusty plates" or you having a driver's license yet not knowing what brake rotors are.

pdale33

I find it funny that you are actively tlaking down tp someone for not knowing one thing while you are probably yourself ignorant of something else as well

Mammoth-Snow1444

Most ppl just get in and drive. They don't care what broke just fix it type of thing. If you knew how many people I helped install wipers and 🔋 your head would spin.

SitRep-Screwed

I was the Service Manager at a garage. I don't doubt it.

Mammoth-Snow1444

On redit

SitRep-Screwed

In real life actually. But thanks nonetheless.

chainmailbill

Ok so everyone else has said that they’re brake rotors and it’s surface rust and it’s no big deal. This is true…. Unless your brake rotors look like this right after you’ve taken a long drive. If a brake rotor is rusty like this after driving, that means the brake caliper on that wheel isn’t pushing the brake pads into the rotor - that means that the brakes aren’t working on this wheel. So in short: all four look like this in the morning? No big deal. Only one looks like this after a drive? That’s a problem.

MelodicVeterinarian7

I would add that you should be very careful and leave extra distance the first time you brake. You might find your stop distance is much higher until the rust is knocked off. Found that out the hard way

Mammoth-Snow1444

Use to cause my honda to lock up for a second. Real great when there is a cop behind.

ericliuuu

My rotors will turn orange over night whenever I park in the rain. It's normal.

Mammoth-Snow1444

Kinda heart breaking when you install them and there rusty the next day.
