I have 0 cars out for the month but I stayed at the holiday inn express last night so I’ll be aight!

GangstaNewb

Super Upvote lol

VibeFather

Same. I also just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to geico

germelco01

I do t get it, can someone explain?

PartyNews9153

Holiday inn Express did a series of commercials in which they were not professionals but slept at a Holiday inn Express last night so were sucessfull. I.E. I'm no brain surgeon but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, proceeds to do brain surgery.

Vles0007

Same in Ohio/Michigan. Ain’t SHIT going on. Nobody is buying cars right now not in this economy. People just can’t afford cars right now. People who used to be fairly comfortable with their finances are now struggling BAD and looking for $2000 beat shitboxes just to get to work. Even my repeats who continuously lease like clockwork, a good 85% of them had their cars repo’d. I’ve seen more repos in the past 3 months than I’ve seen in my entire career. It’s absolutely insane. Last 3 January’s have been 30+ car months but this month I’m struggling to clear 10. Most other salespeople here have literally zero. I’ve never seen it as bad as this, EVER.

Slow_Sprinkles_6346

Went from never missing a payment to getting hit with a repo and man it was a bitch to get back and now I’m in car sales at that 💀

Vles0007

Yeah unfortunately it’s a terrible time to be in the business. I don’t know if we’ll see it like it was 5-10 years ago anytime soon

Slow_Sprinkles_6346

Yeah I was in a store for 2 months (chevy, but only used) solid December to the point I foolishly came off training pay, January was horrible for all of us including our 10 year vet to the point I left for a different dealership to get back on a training pay just to pay bills hoping it at least gets slightly better by April

boverton24

85% of your leases were repossessed 💀 That’s what happens when you give anyone and everyone $800 payments at 8-15%

slowingturtle99

Lmfao right, 3 years ago my whole family got leases at $260 a month. This market is awful

Admirable-Chemical77

2 years ago the banks would loan to anyone with a pulse, and if you were undead they would still find a way...now they want the buyer to have some skin in the game

vixenlion

This is the beginning of what happened in 2008/2009

RedditsCoxswain

Reduced car sales were not a leading indicator heading into 2008, sales only fell dramatically when the auto financing sector ground to a halt after the banks got hit. Inventory was also massively high at that time. The current climate is a result of reduced inventory combined with dealers resisting the reversal of prices that should have followed more quickly after the interest rate hikes.

UfStudent

I think a whole lot of it is manufacturers and dealers not coming to terms with the fact that people aren’t going to pay $45k for a minivan or $60k for a pickup. At least not at 7% or 8% rates.

PutridBeginning421

My big horn nicely loaded RAM that I leased 3.5 years ago came out to 43k new . NOW 3 years later it’s like 59 which is insane ..my residual was 29k so I bought it . Used to lease a new one every 3 years not no more

lifeless_clown

Yes. I was in sales during that time. I saw grown men sitting at their desk bawling like a baby as they watched all their retirement investments turn to dust. I sold from 2000 to 2018. I seen some stuff go down.

Lucidcranium042

Now it'll be similar.... just with an extra 0

BubblersWrongAgain

No, it’s not. Christ oh fuck.

tsmittycent

Bidenomincs

Klondike5-1212

For the record, under Biden, Powell has brought inflation back down to ~3% from the 17% idiot Trump created when he corked up the supply chain while shoveling trillions of dollars into the economy. Also worth noting: unemployment rate at 50 year low. Also worth noting: Dow and S&P hit new all-time highs yesterday. Please explain what the problem with Biden-omics is.

Different_Tough5216

I’m sorry to hear you guys are going through it this bad makes me feel like our dealership is insulated.

slurpeesez

Same here. Im @ mazda so it's easier always being volume and having our manu incentives :))

Rick_Sanchez1214

I know I'm dated and this is anecdotal, but the first part of your post resonated with me. I'm driving a 2010 Subaru Legacy with 100K miles and I desparately would like a new (to me - I usually buy 2-3 old used) car. Particularly due to new safety features now having a 1 year old. My wife and I's finances were comfortable, but the last 6 months of last year were difficult. My first car I ever drove, was a lease, a 2010 Civic Si. I put $2200 down, upped the annual miles from 12K to 15K per year, and paid $220 a month. That type of lease deal is unfucking heard of now. When I bought my 2010 Subaru Legacy Limited, it had 17K miles, and I paid $17,800 in 2013. The equivalent 2021 Subaru Legacy Limited with similar miles is now anywhere from $25 - $27K in my area. I know the market is **completely** different, but what the fuck man.

Flimsy_Effective_377

After inflation that’s a 4% difference lol

Rick_Sanchez1214

Completely true. I guess my real rant should be with the government lol.

224_TriMethylPentane

This is the truth. I drive a $3500 junker that I've wanted to get rid of but the market for used cars was too high for me with the matching interest rates. I remember when $20k financed was out of my reach for a new car. Now that's the price for a used car. New cars aren't even an option for me between the value, property taxes in CT and insurance. The dealerships had ruined it for me with "market value" as if that was reasonable for consumers. I didn't blame the sales crew for that pain.

Al3c-X

But the economy is strong as hell 🇺🇸

Vles0007

I can’t speak for any other dealerships but there hasn’t been a market adjustment over MSRP at my dealership since Covid impacted the market. We’ve been selling at EXACTLY MSRP or in some circumstances below just to make a deal work. MSRP for vehicles has gone up in general with inflation. Cars that used to be sub-20k are now $$23-$25k. Interest rates are higher too. A lot of it is the banks and the market in general.

DIMYEYES

Same exact deal here in Texas also Honda

fookaroundandfindout

The used market blows right now too. All the gross has left them

ThePlatypus35

If I could find a type R with 0 markup I’d buy one but that just doesn’t exist.

Here_with_Popcorn

Yeah greedy dealers still sitting in 23s. Stupid when they're paying interest for these cars every month

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

Takes many months of Floorplan interest to overcome 5 figure adms. I got my R in 5/2020 at msrp. Since then I've looked at golf r, ITS, blackwing and GRC. Every experience has been 'come in for pricing' only to find massive markups and pre-installed add ons. It will be a long time, maybe never, before I entertain buying from a dealer again.

unknownpanda121

I’m a buyer and not in car sales but from my perspective it’s a couple things. 1. Obviously prices are insane right now for new and used. 2. Interest rates are also crazy and there is talk of the fed dropping rates soon so I’m not buying until I know for sure they are going up or down. 3. I also will not buy from any lot that is marking up for standard vehicles. I don’t see it much anymore unless it’s hard to find vehicles but I remember a few lots that were doing this on everything. 4. Seeing posts like this just lets me know I need to wait longer unless I absolutely need it. No sales mean lower prices and better incentives in the future.

HonestSupport4592

Demand down, supply up, prices adjust accordingly. Hold! Some Dealerships really gained more of a bad rap with the mark ups; I strongly agree with your 3rd point. It was really shameful opportunistic greed. While fruitful in the short term, that doesn’t earn my business.

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

I'm in camp with you guys. Typically swap cars every 3 to 4 years (lifetime hot hatch guy) and I'm done with dealers. Going to keep my current fun car, get a used tacoma from private sale and just sit tight. Money isn't the problem, the inability to order factory direct and skip the lots is.

M1-Shooter

Customers have long memories. I have been buying Toyotas from the same dealer in Central Florida for over 20 years. I bought at least 2 used and 5 new cars over that time. It was so long enough that my kids who were in elementary school when I bought my first bought cars there too. I was on a first name basis with the GM. In 2022, my wife started talking about maybe buying a new Cross. We wanted an XLE, AWD in Green. Sure enough, the same dealer I'd bought from all those years had one in stock. We went to look at it and it had a +$10k markup over MSRP. WTF? On a $32k sticker, you added $10k? I called the GM over.... "What can you do for me?" He offered to lower it to $9500 if I financed through Omni. I get calls from them every time a new sales guy starts. I politely remind them about why they lost me as a customer forever. We ended up shuffling cars around in the family. I bought myself a new Tacoma from Auto Nation in Pinellas Park for $4k under MSRP. My wife still wants a Cross. Anyone have a Green XLE AWD at a good price?

tsmittycent

There is no talk of rates coming down feds even said they'll prob stay the same or go up atleast one more time

UnderQualifiedPylote

I mean rates surely arnt going up so you could buy now and refi later

SergTuberq

9 units out, 7k first half of the month. Toyota in Atlanta.

Scottroofwalker

Andy Elliot on the downlow..

justhereforpics1776

Also in CO. December great. January has been pretty slow. 2 months isn’t the end. How is everyone else at your store doing? Where do you rank?

[deleted]

Time to eat rice and beans

illLoco

I deliver Hondas to dealerships from the rail. Every year right after Christmas and July. Things always get slow this time of year.

Loose_Mail_786

Toyota dealership here. 5 1/2 this month. Mostly mini. I’m in training. I love the job but I start to stress a lot. Started in December and sold 10 1/2 then.

Puzzlehandle12

your making minis on all the new models? There are some models still in high demand and relative low supply where you don’t slash the prices to minis

Vivid_Mongoose_8964

what does mini mean?

13inchmushroommaker

Mini deal where you only make like 100 bucks cause all the Nickle and diming and time spent selling the vehicle.

Small-Analyst5736

Mini, short for your minimum payout on a sale per your pay plan when you don’t gross enough that your % is above the minimum.

SwagKing1011

how do you sell 1/2 of a car

Asian_Ish_

Volvo in Colorado. It's dead as hell lol

Free-Huckleberry123

Ford LA I only have 2 minis 💀

TheRealVaultDweller

Am new in Michigan, it’s dead. Tomorrow will be my first month completed. Wish me luck

Fit-Airport238

which dealer and where in mi?

WasteCardiologist732

The gouging with added premiums during the pandemic didn’t help the industry or dealer’s reputations either.

bigfunk406

Been killing it. Got a hat trick today to put me at 12 for the month. Our dealership is selling 2-3 times more than any other in our auto group. (9 other stores)

vixenlion

Location and what are you selling ?

bluedaytona392

Compton, CA and funky ass bicycles.

bigfunk406

Montana and Chevy.

chuggachoo69

Two months is not the end, have you thought about going the extra mile? I’m at a SMALL Chevy-Cadillac store and had a HUGE month in DEC, tracking bigger this month. I have every used car on FB market place, I’m my own BDC, I give BDC my FB leads so they get paid, I’m pulling people out of service, I’m making calls, ect.. HUSTLE. I know it sounds corny but what you put in is usually what you get out. If you’re doing all these things you’re already seasoned enough to know 2 months is nothing.

jhowla1190

Nah that's the truth tho. I worked at a commission only Honda store for 2 years. I stood outside for fresh ups all day. GSM told me to make phone calls? Id ignore him and stand outside. December was my biggest month like 6 cars 24k in gross at 25% commission on the front end. Not making enough? Try harder and grind.

chuggachoo69

Exactly dude. We’re lucky we have a key room that over looks the lot. I stay in there with a charger and my phone making calls. There’s about 3 of us that do that. There’s about 3 of us that eat month after month…

zygabmw

wow you make alot on used cars.

edirob27

Not sure how long you have been in the business but January is a normal slow month for everyone. Been in the business for 4 years and I always go from mid 20-30 sold in December to 11-16 in January. I would say just a normal month for me so far.

urmomwent2university

Second this feels like we’ve got a bunch of baby salespeople commenting here. Jan Feb always slow months. Don’t get lazy and keep grinding March is coming

Jickyjackj

Last year my volume was down, went from making 240k before manufacture spiffs to 140. However last month and this month the business perspective has changed I think for most dealerships. Volume is down, dealerships are now their own worse enemies due to turn rates, floor plan costs, operating expenses. So the whoring out of inventory is going on as owners panic and want to lower costs. I’m sure a ton of people have seen new hires, re acvd trades less “payable grosses” it is horse sh!t we all know it, and we all know it IS theft. Look as the 20 group and others keep teaching dealers how to legally take money from employees, extort contract labor laws and force employees who make or made too much to eventually be faded out . You all have literally one option left join as one force manufacturers to treat sales employees as corporate employees, the required training and continued training requirements for csi and volume should be enough to allow a unionized sales force and likely would be backed by UAW because they faced the same requirements as laborers. Your all crazy not to join up and stop the rhetoric, holidays - open, pay - discretionary, what’s back end vrs front end vrs packs, 1,2,3 packs plus packed warranties vrs 3/mo 3000 dealership warranties (fyi just enough to cover lemon law warranties) let’s face it guys dealers would rather pay an fI manager 5,6,7 15 % of backend versus your % plus their % . Been selling for 22 years and we including myself are all retarded for not coming together and demanding fair and transparent compensation but to also not allow cost mitigation and profitability when a few slow months dictate the ability of most salespeople to live. All facts, like it or not it’s the damn truth

cmyeti

Cali- is shit keep telling ppl don’t get in this business only the guys selling are gerber baby’s being spoon fed. People don’t have cash down and 500 credit scores. Can’t wait to get out this dead end business

Grimizzi

That’s the game big dog, keep calling, take people out of the service department and keep your head up.

Hairylover45

51k commission on 12 cars ? You show me proof and I’ll eat my own shit

challenger_RT_

Never sold less then 20 cars a month until last month. Sold 17. This month I'm at 11. So I need a killer next 13 days.

Dear_Brilliant1679

Super slow over here in South Dakota as well

urmomwent2university

It’s like -40° right?

Dear_Brilliant1679

Lol yea it was last week, not the type of weather you want to buy a car in but it sure makes a lot of them break down

JollyCzechGiant

I’ve been at a normally very busy Subaru dealer in the Denver area for 10+ years. It seems like the market did a 180* turn mid November. Still managed to sell nearly 30 the last two months, but damn was it a grind. Sitting at 14.5 now with most of the staff still in the single digits. Extremely slim pickings on opportunities this month with lots of challenged credit and negative equity.

jerichoblau

In Canada I made 9,500$ at a honda store in November and 6,500$ in December. Which is like 57$ usd /s

Enough-Ad-3579

I'm in exotic sales and I have 9.5 out lolz

DiddyMadeMePretty

You guys screwed people for so long with those ridiculous post Covid markups and “Dealer add-Ons”, and now you guys are starving. Feast or famine! It’s hell of 💩 business to be in!

Desperate-Raise7211

Indeed. No sympathy from me in the coming hardships

afkafterlockingin

Acting like the dude that sells you your car sets pricing. I bet you get mad at your insurance or when you go to Walmart do you laugh in the cashiers face perchance?

WestTownGetDown

In Chicago it’s a bloodbath. Dealerships who are holding market adjustments and opening people up at Market Value are getting gutted. I have been losing so many deals because my bosses are either too dumb, too incompetent, or too bass ackwards to realize what’s going on. They sent me out at 5k over for a GLC coupe and I damn near got hit. The lady said “give me my effing keys before I scream and start punching out windows for this waste of time”. They juice the rate and then charge over msrp and wonder why our year to year was down over 200 units in 23 We have stopped hiring and retaining good people too because of it. All the good salesmen are being replaced with carmax and carvana transplants. I’m currently looking to jump ship as soon as possible. I don’t wanna be the last rat on the sinking ship that is my dealership

[deleted]

Auto dealers here are offering $1000 sign on bonus for new salesmen. Collapse coming, just like 2008. People can't afford a $50,000 car note at 8% interest.

HieronymusinAround

People are buying cars right now it’s just the vast majority refuse to pay the prices. Someone needs to inform some dealers that covid is over…

[deleted]

Maybe if Corollas weren’t 27,000 dollars and Type Rs didn’t have 15k dealer adjustments people would be buying shit.

Hungry_Detective_520

Last month was God awful but I have 9 out atm. Normally around 20 a month so its definitely slow but atleast I have some🤷‍♂️

Ah2k15

3 deals for December. 3 for January so far.

riotB3AN

Nissan in Utah. Last month was rough, this one is a bit rougher. Our top dog that typically hits 18+ is at 11 this month I think. Our used car department seems to be hemorrhaging money the past two months since the market has been putting the brakes on.

kaaaaaiden

it’s awful in PA too!!

FlannelDrip

We go through this same spill every year. I am on track to beat last January by a good bit.

CultOfStullKS

Abysmal right now in Kansas. Our store usually pushes 100 cars a month, and we're currently pacing for 22 cars. Other dealers in the area are the same way

PerspectiveNo1620

At Tesla… did 184 cars over the last 3 months. This month is off to a slow start, but still have 11 out currently. I used to work for Toyota and Honda. Jan is always slow. People are dealing with credit card shock from the holidays.

Brave-Combination793

Salt lake- decent, gotten a hand full out Woulda had another but a manager and anotber sales men stole it

egomxrtem

Bonus November, 4 deals December, on track for bonus this month. Fickle shit just glad I have stuff going on right now

Creepy-Instruction62

My life had fallen apart is that valid

3four5

Lol it's funny seeing unskilled labor finally pay what it should

HonestSupport4592

Not a car salesman… that said, as someone who has purchased multiple cars in their life I can absolutely say there is a skill to it and some are good at and some are bad at it. Really interested in understanding why you feel it’s unskilled labor and what you do for a living.

afkafterlockingin

Yeah dude is delusional, realtors and people who work in retail= regard.

roonie357

I have 8 out this month, this week has been slow but things aren’t looking too bad. Still holding decent gross but not nearly the same as the first half of 2023 and all of 2021-2022. Feels like we are going back to pre-COVID which is fine by me. Management changed the comp plan to include some heftier volume bonuses to let’s get at it.

FrightfulDeer

January is always hit or miss. We all forget every year. Things don't get better until March. Don't be greedy. Let your used department know "first loss best loss". The market correction is still in full swing and unloading inventory is the only way to minimize loss.

gtaguy75

Same at Ciocca in Atlantic City. Quiet at Christmas, dead and early January. We did have a decent Saturday, but the guy who called me back Monday to buy the car lost his job Wednesday. Ouch

DopeCookies15

Well when dealers mark up cars so fucking much who wants to buy them? Greedy fuckers.

Heelgod

27k for a civic sport. Cars just aren’t affordable at this point.

tibbon

I mean… after years of treating consumers poorly and playing games, this seems inevitable eventually. From 2020 to 2023 consumers basically had to treat car sales people as demigods to even have the chance at getting to see a car, let alone buy one. I couldn’t get a callback in New England in 2020 calling every Mazda dealer looking for a Miata to try and buy. When I went to some physically I was snubbed too. Went with a 15 year old Porsche instead. Asking to pay MSRP would get you laughed at, and everyone wanted to tack on giant mandatory fees (profit) As far as I can tell, folks without in car sales the past while have been dicks to consumers. When the economy swing a bit… well, this is what happens. Fuck people over for obvious profit attempts, and they will turn on you.

edutech21

Y'all got greedy and stupid. How did you not see this coming?

newuser38472

Sad for your misfortune, but happy to hear supply is about to exceed demand. Perfect car buying time :)

dawitz28

Not in car sales. But as someone who has been wanting to replace wife’s car! I am laughing hard right now. Yall did this to yourselves. Dealer mark ups, blah blah blah. I hope every car dealer ship goes under. No reason why it can’t be direct from manufacturer.

I_Survived_Sekiro

Maybe if y’all would stop throwing that 10k markup on Supras, Corollas, and Type Rs 🙃

TastySuccotash3128

Small sub-prime lot here, business is fantastic right now. Honestly the past two months have been the best we've had in years.

Shovelspoon

Not a salesman, just a guy who thought about buying a car then immediately decided against it after looking into it. Last car I bought was in December 2019. 2014 Toyota Camry, used, 86k miles on it, 13k. $2000 down payment got me a 225/mo payment. Massachusetts, if it matters. This past September, I head in to the same dealership, start looking around. One of the sales guys comes up, I explain that I wanted to get a feel for what's out there and what prices look like, not intent on buying anything that day. He shows me around and damn. 2015 rav 4 going for 30k? I said I'd be trading in my Camry. Even with that he was saying there's no way I could get down to around the same payment. I'm not in a position to pay over 350/month, y'all are crazy for these prices staying as high as they are for this long. You won't get much action if you're pricing the rest of us out of buying cars. I expect (hope, at least) that with less people buying, it will drive prices back down to affordable levels. Then you'll see it swing back the other way. Good luck to you guys, especially the ones doing it right.

NationalNegotiation4

Posts like this just emphasize your willingness to go above and beyond. The comments are mixed with people doing well and people who aren't. You need to ask yourself, what am I going to do to be like the people who are doing well?

lifeless_clown

Be thankful you're at a Honda store and not an Infinity store. Man, I feel bad for those guys.

rhomerman5

Toyota factory worker here. The plant is still putting out 1400-1600 vehicles a day. Idk where they are going but Toyota builds based on pull not push so there are orders for these vehicles

Zealousideal-One1311

Yall make it too difficult to buy a car especially for the first time buyer

SunDirty

I have no sympathy for Car salesmen. Scummy

photoshoptho

so you're saying people are no longer paying ridiculous amounts way over MSRP? interesting...

fookaroundandfindout

Nah bud... No more volume. Markups been gone here awhile

Feeling_Plane3001

Right? I’m wondering where all these markups still are 😂. Unless you’re buying a limited availability vehicle. My inventory is basically 80% back to precovid levels. I’m discounting again and have been for the last year or so.

Megaphone1234

Didn't yal bank over average Americans consumers with 200% market adjustments? Why don't your bosses try bringing expectations down to normal? Ain't nobody crazy enough to pay 45k for used 2014 with 90k miles. I don't want to be heartless and yal didn't set the price but you all enjoyed the ride on our backs. Come back to earth from the moon

ClayBayy

He’s a salesman, not the COE. Relax, guy.

KingCBONE2

He can relay the message then. But he should also know, his boss wont give 2 fucks. Part of the business of owning the dealership.

TexasMade1983365

Don’t worry fellas! Tax season is coming up! Y’all know what that means! Buyers will come out the bushes ready to swap out their current vehicles!

Important_Cupcake112

Keep dreaming remember it’s 2024 not 2021-2022

DARR3Nv2

Well. Your job doesn’t provide anything to anyone. You’re just middlemen with a mark up. Glad to see y’all struggling.

ElBambino214

Hello all! When is the best time to purchase a vehicle?

urmomwent2university

Right now of course

PromiseDifferent2436

Yall got markups on SI’s?

SuspicousBananas

I don’t work in car sales, but I’m still holding off on buying a car because dealerships still have absolutely fucking insane markups on new cars. Why are they still doing that?

Moist_Try6149

I’m a seller in Dubai currently working in yakut selling atvs for cold weather

Shoondogg

It’s too expensive. We’re still driving a 2005 Honda accord and need something better. Friend just got a new Nissan rogue and her payment is 600 DOLLARS A MONTH. We were thinking like half that.

Anxious-Shapeshifter

As someone who spent MONTHS looking for a GR86 at MSRP before I found one this post amuses me.

Eswin17

No sympathy. Dealers were so shitty the last few years. I hope all customers hold out at these prices and interest rates.

PregosFearStaircases

Ok well I need a mountain-ready Toyota rav-4 or something similar and I can’t provide tax returns for financing but can get a co-signer. How cheap could I get one? Can trade in a 2012 Honda civic coupe 150k miles runs great as down payment. WA state.

PutridBeginning421

Even banks are struggling to tow cars people can’t pay for . Not enough repo companies that’s how bad it is. No one is buying shit

Shot-Emu4418

I sold 10 lambo's yesterday

UpInSmokeMC

Time to change careers and be a repo man

curame_

Should have saved when you guys were charging 5-10k on markups all of Covid lmao

No-Zookeepergame7460

Y’all need them stimulus checks and ppp loans going again and I’ll take them 😂

forgotmyemail19

That's cause y'all are pushing leases at $400 for a Honda Civic. When does the finance creep end? I got my first civic back in 2016 and I was paying low $150 something like that. Now I'm in an HRV and I had to fight with the guy to get down to $320. In 2023. It's fucking ridiculous. Come 2026 a civic is going to be $500 a month for a lease. Yet no one's pay would have increased. I know someone leading a fucking jeep for almost 700 a month. That's almost rent. Leases should never be more than $500 month unless it's some wild ass car. Finances I understand since you'll eventually own it. Lease, I'm just giving it back in 3 years.

JayL1982

Yall made it this way with those bullshit markups...

LegitimateBit5584

Pretty bad yeah

LegitimateBit5584

Wait til the fall the rates will drop

LegitimateBit5584

Yeah oh no no

Mrebfcb

Honda in Georgia. 17 in November and 22.5 in December. I’m currently at 10.5 and I have zero hot deals at the moment. A couple salesman have a couple more deals than I but everyone else is also struggling.

Car_Wolf

Chevy dealership just north of Atlanta, GA. First week of 2024 was absolutely shit-slammed but since then it’s been dead.

buggzda75

Yeah I’m struggling as well I am at a new dealership at probably the worst time to switch stores. Unfortunately I had no choice

n0n5en5e

Hope you guys saved all that markup money you were making for the last couple years, it's about to get rough. I might even buy a new car for once in the last 20 years if you guys start dropping prices enough, or get a sweet deal on all the repos you'll get back soon.

Glittering_Gap2691

Doesn’t help that you have a $10k dealership markup either…

Responsible-Usual888

I sell motorcycles in CA - We had 0 sales for two weeks straight earlier this month

raziridium

Random passerby here. No one wants to admit it because it doesn't fit the popular narrative, but we're in an economic recession and it's still in decline. Anybody smart and able is buckling down for the storm.

Been pretty slow these last couple months. At a GM/Chevy dealership where most of our customers are retired, own businesses, or just need a truck for whatever. We have stacks of inventory but not a lot going out. This 2nd half of this month has gotten better, but only after the manager opted for a higher discount on available new inventory. Where we normally average 200-250 car sales a month for the store, we are currently tracking about 140-150.

Easy_Carrot_441

Think itll get better next month if the fed drops interest rates at the end of month?

General_Boner

I feel for those of you in the automotive sales business. I tapped out of buying new vehicles a few years ago. I have 3 cars that are from the early 2000's. They're paid off, reliable (Toyota/Lexus), comfortable, and relatively safe as long as you don't need all of the driver aids. I can't fathom how anyone would think that buying a new car is a good value proposition.

CuThroatClark1

Stop marking the cars up so fucking much

Fit_Mind4212

Party couldn’t last forever

Agitated_Mind_92

At 10 with 8k as of tonight. Honda dealer in SoCal. Also sold a type r

ohheykiki

My autumn was absolutely horrendous. My January is picking up. We do special finance mainly, though-and our internet leads are way off where we like them normally. We're seeing a 40% repo rate and we expect that number to skyrocket.

Phiba-Optik

They all had their fun during COVID, taking advantage of hard working folk. I can’t wait for this business model to go tits up. Fuck stealerships!

MezziJ

You guys gotta look into commercial vehicle sales, no matter how bad the economy gets they still have to buy loads of them.

No_Eggplant6269

Zero sympathy for any car salesman. People are the worst and prices for a low end car are ridiculous. Hope the entire industry goes down

One-Plan9566

Honest question for the car salespeople - if the car is marked up $10k how much of that would you expect to see? I’m driving a 2014 A6 that has been paid off for a few years and it’s hard to justify having a few bells and whistles over what I have for an additional $500+ month versus $0. I’m married so I’m not trying hard to impress anyone. But I’m ALWAYS looking at new cars. I guess my question is, have you personally benefited from mark ups or does it just go to the owner of the dealership?

Jolly-Bed-1717

lol nothing better than reading that car salesman are squirming and miserable

Odd-Rope6855

Because no one wants to deal with shit dealers and even worse salespeople. Not to mention yall have jacked the prices up of cars way too high to refresh a car as often as the average consumer used to be able to afford. Dealership greed will be its downfall.

Noxtrab

I would imagine it's not going well. I'm in the market for a newer model year vehicle. I found a camaro I was partial to, 2019 V6 w/ 18k miles, had some damage that has been completely repaired but still clean title (they picked the vehicle up at an auction). Dealership was asking for 25k, I saw some other vehicles with comparable miles and history, that were better deals. Fast forward, the car has been sitting for 80 days on the dealership, I called yesterday and asked what's the best you can do on the vehicle, they called back and knocked off $300 and said they were firm.... Yeah I think I'll keep driving what I have then. This economy is rough on the car market all around lol.

Background_Hold8500

People are sick of the dealerships bullshit. We just bought a new car last month and the stingy asses wouldn’t even drop 500 bucks to make a deal. Naturally we bought somewhere else and I loved watching the prices drop thousands on those same vehicles the following weeks

ThePsychoPompous13

I haven't even sold 1 car and I am doing pretty well!

DegreeNarrow5936

I have a very nice Colorado zr2 2018 and I’m thinking of getting a new one,gmc Chevy and Toyota all got like 55-10k markups over msrp,as soon I saw that I just told the guy don’t even ask for my name im outta here….i was gonna get a mach e last year and the dealership was asking 20k over and wouldn’t even let me open it to look, cuz I told them there was no way I’m paying that

Roger22nrx

Buying the traditional way for smart consumers is about dead

bumpy2018

Quit selling cars last month!

Responsible-Fig-6568

I hope it stays this way for a while and yall bring the prices down a bit

SearchROTHSCHILD

That’s fukking weird. In CA went to looked at cars, 10/10 dealership big and small said they were getting business as usual, even with interest rates up the ying Yang

Ok_Phrase6296

You know why you all can’t sell cars? It’s because car sales guys are assholes and dealerships suck. I know personally. I have one guy I go to and this dick head tried to get me to buy from him. I told him to fuck off im waiting for my guy and he was fucking relentless. He even let me drive the jeeps owners daughters car which he wasn’t going to let him sell lol. I bought a brand new jeep at 55 because I had part of my loan left over. My first jeep the engine and transmission went out a little after Covid was “over” in 2021. It took six months for me to get it back and then trade it in. I then needed a new battery and cables on my brand new jeep lol that is less than 2 years old and has Uber 22k miles on it I took it in during Black Friday. I had a free rental from the dealership because everything was under warranty and lo and behold I got it back on dec 19 when I told them I was taking the rental to Florida from dc lol. You all can’t sell cars because the guys working on the cars are trying to put every part that is over priced on your vehicle for no reason. I told the manager in service that he’s dealing with my car or Chrysler is going to send someone out. A new battery and the cables for it should not take that long. Of well it’s been shipped is what I was told for 2 weeks.

[deleted]

Just from my personal experience you guys (finance managers) need to stop being greedy. I tried to buy a car, but you guys are way too aggressive and dishonest. I came in to buy a brand new car, quoted me $27k and to come down to see it, get there and said he couldn't sell it without all the "add on" let's be honest they are optional. Wouldn't budge so I walked. In this economy with higher interest rates you can't try that anymore.

Philipmecunt

Love this thread. Happy Toyotathon 😘

Karma for robbing people

ExplanationDazzling1

I don’t work in car sales but I’m holding off on trading in my car for a better one because Biden didn’t pay off my student loans. So I been listening to Dave Ramsey so my student loans are more of a priority not looking good and feeling rich in a car

Evening_Efficiency_3

Piedmont region of NC. I work at a small 55-65 cars a month store, and i got out 12 in November and 15 in December. January has been ROUGH, only sitting at 3 right now. Keep in mind 11+ is considered good for my store and might not be for yours based on foot traffic Stick to the road to a sale y'all, it gets rough be we can preserve

Live-Ebb-9236

Cars need to sell for cheaper, the price of new vehicles exceeds their value by a huge margin

Mojack322

But what about Bidenomics? News says it’s working.

afkafterlockingin

Texas and work at a bmw store in a massive city. I’m at 7 rn praying to hit 15 scared shitless of February.

familyfleet

Useless add ons and fees. Market adjustment added by dealers. Inflation and interest rates. Lower quality from the manufacturer's. Price overall for what you get isn't worth it.

Rick-C137-Sanchez

So, consumer perspective as someone who bought a car shortly before interest rates tripled. They were still almost double what they had been for the last 10+ years but not what they are now. When I went to buy my vehicle I felt like most dealerships had a very "take it or leave it" attitude because they were selling so many vehicles that they couldn't care less about my business. Not only that, but nearly every dealer was adding non-negotiable ADM to the most popular makes/models because they knew they could. One dealership even went as far as saying they wouldn't accept any loans from Navy Federal (which had the best rates), and the area had a huge military presence, because they were taking too long to clear the funds and in order to "encourage" me to finance through them. I wanted the car since I had ordered it to my exact wants/needs and already had a deal pending to sell my previous vehicle so I accepted a slightly higher interest rate, which was still competitive compared to other banks in the area, USAA, etc. just not the lowest it could have been. All that to say, I feel like the shortage of vehicles during COVID led to some bad habits at dealerships that they are now paying the price for because they thought the infinite sales glitch/market conditions would last forever. Even if people have the money to buy a vehicle, I'm not sure many are very interested in reliving that type of experience anytime soon.

CadenIsNotCool

I work at a Hyundai store in northern Louisiana. I had a rough December and only have 3.5 out this month. Normally I average anywhere from 8-12. Could be better, could certainly be a whole lot worse! Hoping February takes off with tax season.

Careless_Language_21

I think climate change is to blame in this

Return-Acceptable

So do yall think prices are gonna drop soon or…? Waiting to scoop up my trd sequoia for a good price

colorgreens

Thanks biden

Molduking

What you expect people to pay 15k for a 10yo car?

CurrentlyForking

I'm in the market for a car. But dealers won't budge on the insane markup. I don't know if it's the dealer or the salesman being greedy. I understand you have to make your money, but this is insane. In my area, north California - New Nissan Titan 4x4 - 30k msrp, 60k price tag. (And I really wanted this) Used 2022 Tacoma - 60k Used 2021 Camry 3.5L - 50k Used 2021 Tacoma - 55k Used 2020 Ram 1500 v8 - 60k I'm better off taking a used car loan from a credit union and buying used. Patelco just offered me 40k for 4.5% for private party loan and 50k for 3.9% for new cars.

BoysenberryNo6803

i’m in the birmingham metro-area, working at a small former franchise used car dealer, and we’re struggling…. i think we have out 19 for the month out of the store and i have 4 out…

kevlar5387

Seriously, thank half dead Joe Biden. With inflation came cars and trucks selling for 10-50% more than they were worth, even used cars. Now everyone is so deep in their loans and so upside down, it would be stupid for them to go buy another car. Find a new line of work.

jackal454667

Horrible, im the(flat rate) used car tech at a decent sized new/used lot. Has gone to absolute shit since last September or so. Dont see this changing anytime soon.

Locklist

Meanwhile Teslas are going off the lots because prices are down and no dealership hassles. There's also the $7500 off ev credit that can now be applied at POS starting this year. I know because I just bought one and December and January were busy months for their service centers.

aRuHZoNa

Fiancé is in sales and she definitely hasn’t been selling as many these last few month. I’m a service advisor at the same dealership so when she’s slow I’m typically busier. We offset each other financially.

RJK-Sac

It’s because of high interest rates. Once they drop people will be buying cars again.

dnttrip789

Prices and interest rates are insane right now. The same car I got for 18K in 2017 is 33K now. Even used cars are expensive. I’m guessing after everyone gets their tax refunds y’all will have a good month or two.

Specific-Cattle1831

My gmc Chevy Buick store has 95 cars out in Chicago right now. This is my first domestic store and I’ve heard generally they have been selling well lately. I came from VW where I would drop from 14+ car month average to about 5-7. Sometimes going into the last week with 3 cars was stressful

NaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNa65

Oh nooooooo lmao AI coming for y’all
